mollie: you should turn the other cheek but that's not what the president believes. fan joe and mika have been quite harsh against him. joe ray: it's pe cuellar. -- it's peculiar. we are paternal searchers. researchers look for patterns that deviate from the norm. howie: let's get on to this face shrift tweet. -- this facelift tweet. it's unanimous the media says it crossed the line and at the same time she and scarborough have been relentlessly attacking him. sharyl: this is coming to a head with the media attacking trump

and trump attack back as hard or heard than he gets it. his followers are not deterred in my experience with the people i have spoken to over the course of time when he does this. howie: does the media down play the language joe and mika use against him? mollie: he's the president and should be held to a different standard than the media. but there is no regional not to acknowledge how personal the media has been in their attacks. the issue of whether he's misogynist. he's like the don rickles of politics. if you are in his orbit. you can't make that claim when

we all if you watched the primary antigen. we know how he - -- how he operates. howie: we had a tweet a little bit cooler. joe and miqa not such bad people. ray: this is just odd. the president of the united states coming down from olympus and putting himself on the same level as morning commentators. howie: you are saying he does this to both genders. does it remind us of him slamming megyn kelly and what he said on the "access hollywood" tape. mollie: he's an insulter.

he goes after people who are male or female. during the primary wasn't joe scarborough floating his own name as a vp candidate in they were very favorable to the president. howie: let's put up some foot knowledge at the beginning of 2016. mollie: they did a lot to normalize and legitimize his candidacy. and they were very friendly toward him. this erratic nature thing is not just the president, it's the media south lets. howie: the day the travel ban partially took effect because of the supreme court ruling, that would have been the story. but the media is often chasing

the side issues and the scandals and not covering the substance of his agenda. isn't this a case where the president is detracting from his own agenda? sharyl rragenda. sharyl: i don't expect a lot from politicians. but we in the media should be held to a higher standard. i think that's where we are falling short. howie: as much as the media mavens are talking about this. but trump supporters love this when he beats up on pundits and they don't mind that he uses street language. ray: so many people doing so many different things in so many different places, we no longer seem to have the discretion to see the difference between

somebody who writes straight ahead journalism versus somebody who says whatever they feel on any given morning. doing different jobs and in different context all the time. sharyl: those used to be distinct jobs, and now they are bleeding'. reporters aren't doing as good of a job as keeping those out of their actual copy. the media attacks on trump or republicans in general are taken personally by that half of the country that is not represented in those newsrooms. and people take it personal. howie: during the campaign before the romantic relationship between joe scarborough and mika brzezinski, and they are engaged

to be married. he called joe's very insecure long-time girlfriend neurotic. mollie: there is something interesting about the nbc connection. this is a former employer of donald trump. and you see it in the cnn connection. maybe the president feels personally betrayed. howie: there is a show with scarborough going on the air saying white as it haids told him the "national enquirer" was going to do a negative story on him and it could be killed. people said this is pressure, this is blackmail. sharyl: i don't know that that qualifies as blackmail.

all sorts of pressure being exerted on news organizations and opinion people. this idea that pressure to create a narrative or steer away from a narrative is heavy on many front. the president seems willing to steer away from that. howie: my sources say the was joe scarborough who called jared kushner to say this was looming. it was ultimately published. their headline about a big cheating scandal. joe said talk to the -- jared said talk to the president, and joe said he's mad at me. and jared said maybe you should apologize. ray: they may back up joe's'

version of events or jared curb ners. but i can't believe we are talking about it. howie: we'll move on to other forms of journalism. trump advisor anthony scaramucci on being falsely accused by cnning. -- cnn. twitter account. what about all the other stories they do, fake news. the stories we reported said top trump advisor anthony scaramucci was under investigation for ties to a russian investment fund and having a secret meeting with an advisor for the fund. anthony scaramucci told me it was all a lie. sharyl: they never said it was false. especially for a well-respected journalist from formerly well respected organizations like cnn and "washington post" to be making mistakes that wouldn't be allowed in journalism school. many in the media publicly exempted themselves from the

normal editorial rules because they view the candidate or this president as so dangerous. howie: it was very thin. chery.sharyl: only because i tht was donald trump. howie: this prompted a re-response from the white house. >> i think we have gone to a place where if the media can't be trusted to report the news, then that's a dangerous place for america. you mentioned the anthony scaramucci story where reporters had to resign. sharyl: they have been intent on this russia story. they had the dossier story. they could have vetted and seen

the accuracy of the document before running the explosive headlines. they falsely claimed james comey was going to say donald trump had not been told he was under investigation when his testimony revealed he was. no accountability when those anonymous sources town out to have mislead. this is a pattern. howie: jeff zucker took the story seriously by taking the story down and the three journalists involved no longer have jobs. ray: the bigger the scalp, the higher the risk. when cnn was trying to reach inside trump's inner circle to take a scalp. if you are wrong, you tumble a long way.

system worked. they retracted. they apologized, and they fired three people. mollie: they weren't transparent about what happened. they had over and over again the claim that comey would refute donald trump's claim he had been told three times he wasn't under investigation. howie: nbc made the same mistake. here is the thing on the retraction story. there has been no coverage of this by cnn or msnbc. except some beneathing mentions add sarah muck besanders denounced cnn. mollie: good journalists make mistakes. just have to take accountability. sharyl: i don't think this is a case of good journalists making

mistakes. it's so rookie in nature, it wouldn't be allowed in journalism school. howie: are they rookie mistakes when you have a pulitzer prize winner? or is it as mollie was suggesting, that standards are bent a little bit because of the media animosity towards this president? >> all of the above. when i was at cbs and cnn like you were, that story would never have been able to air. ray: the hoops you had to jump through were far more numerous. howie: sarah palin suing the "new york times."

answering a question. howie: he's the guy who told off the white house. i didn't see him get a critical question. mollie: the dialogue here. he did make his complaint known and she did respond. it was more truthful than what we have seen from other reporters who are just whining nonstop. if there were more dialogue and substantive questions it would be better for everybody. howie: because spokesman criticized the press from the podium, does that warrant that level of criticism? ray: the news business is walking into a trap by complaining about the rules.

who does making the briefing off camera hurt? just television. the information is still transmitted. the points are still put out. the spokesman is still quoting. so you are disadvantaging radio and television and radio and television says in an unsympathetic world, make them scream, make them come plain. mollie: the cnn white house reporter tweeted "is this america?" this isn't about serving america or getting for in the minds of an average viewer. howie: there was some criticism but not at this level when the obama administration did the leak investigation and started obtaining reporters' phone

records and emails. ray: there were a lot of stories about james rosen's troubles and what it meant for the white house to be going after reporters that way. howie: i'm not saying it was swept under the rug, but there is a level of animosity here that is really something. the president put up another one saying people say he's not presidential, it's modern-day presidential. mollie: it's one of the more interesting tweets we have seen from the president. i think he's explaining something to people who will hear about how he has a different attitude about the presidency. it does require punching through some of the established way of doing business that we have seen. this is a good reminder that it's good to have someone in your newsroom who understands how trump speaks and how that

three journalists who worked on the piece. i spoke to him here in studio one. how did you feel when cnn published these allegations about you after you specifically explained they weren't try. tonytryanthony: it seemed a lite unfair it didn't seem like they did their homework. but when i started to make calls to the senior leadership to cnn and explained my position. i thought they moved pretty quickly. i was satisfied 12 to 15 hours i had spoken to them they realized they made a mistake. i am like you, a full-time journalist, i used to play one on television for your sister network. howie: cnn said you had a secret

meting in toda davos with a rusn official. anthony: it was a guy i had known for a while base had gone to davos and had shaken his hands before. we must have talked for 3 to 5 minutes at the table. he then left, and a senior trump official was talking he. it came from an elizabeth warren letter that was sent to secretary of treasury steve mnuchin. when i got back from davos, secretary mnuchin was up on the hill in the confirmation hearing

and he brought it up, and i thought it was outrageous. howie: have you ever done business with russia? >> no. howie: have you ever been to russia? anthony: city was on a field trip from the on zon school of economics. howie: there was a report you threatened a lawsuit against cnn. anthony * i indicated to them what they were doing was inflammatory. they rough up trump officials. it's like a yankee in fenway park. i sent the tweet that it accepted their apology.

it wasn't until it became clear that there was still uncertainty within their organization about what the facts were that it had to make another phone call. i said i am not under investigation, i have done nothing wrong. if you don't clear it up i have to take action to protect myself and my reputation. howie: what do you think about the media have covered yourfriend, the president since he became president anthony: the media is in a crisis because he's president. he loves the country. i'm an ardent yo supporter of hs ageneral today. he was the improbable president. he's outside the mainstream of washington. the president often said about his candidacy, they were fundraising and hosting dinners

in his apartment. but once he became a politician they turned the knife on him. howie: are you saying journalists have never accepted the fact that he won the election? anthony: i think they are accepting it now. i think the next six months for the president will be phenomenal. he has a great economic plan and the healthcare situation will right itself. i think the media needed to make an adjustment to the fact they had high expectations hillary clinton would become president. howie: did the president go too far when he said all the major news organizations were fake news? >> i group in a middle class family. i didn't realize the pain and economic desperation that's out there in middle america.

the president got that ahead of me. i should have got it, i missed it. it took a billionaire on fifth avenue to shoift to me. the media has been biased and unfair to him. he's letting his followingers know that and they respond color any. howie: what have you learned so far about the beltway culture? >> it's a tough town. there is the politics of personal destruction here. this manufactured scandals. i think squall street is fairer than washington. i think we are front stabbers on squall street. if we don't like each other we come right at each other. but we are both on the green team. there is no green team in washington. rear transacting on money. i can buy a building from you and we'll both make money.

in washington there is no green team so everybody has mixed incentives. there is no green team. i don't like it at all. howie: cnn responded to the donald trump wrestle mania video that shows him body slamming a wrestler with a cnn wrestler super impose on his head. obviously sarah huckabee-sanders lied when she said the president has never done so. it's juvenile behavior below the office of the president. are news organizations allowing themselves to be used by critical smear artists? there's a denture adhesive that holds strong until evening.

howie: sharyl attkisson is here to talk about her book "the smear." you write the smear artists feed reporters quote news. don't all leakers have questionable motivations? sharyl: absolutely. that's part of your job in sifting through. i would argue those who try to put narratives out have gotten

so good at getting their nose under the tent in news organizations that wheat haven't become the proper filter. we have been the con diets and tools to advance their narratives. howie: you write to advance their agendas, media are being used. the key point, that you need to independently confirm the information. sharyl: if the process works right it can be good. it's difficult for me to do a story brought to me by anybody. but i can tell you there is almost -- there is a formal and informal process. p.r. firms that spin for the corporate and political interest literally sit down with top news people at organizations and pick stories one at a time. they hand you the research.

it's completely done for you. and you wouldn't believe how many of them do that without finding what's behind it. there is the informal influencing lower below the radar that' that's insidious in washington, d.c. i think that there are organized forces and some that are less organized who have opposed this president whether democrat, republican or media, he is fighting all three fronts. they are colluding together to under mine him in any way possible. this includes the use of fake social media accounts. there is software the government uses as well as private interest that can maintain 20 social meade yeah accounts that look like they are from different people but they are all being operated by one actor.

they have distinct i.p. addresses and security so you can't tell this is the case. howie: if somebody doesn't like the president and runs the story, is that collusion by the media? sharyl: i don't think that's collusion. there are legitimate ways to use and the people are sometimes using leaked information. howie: they have lumped you in with stories by sinclair. sharyl: one acknowledged he had never watched the show and was calling my show a conservative show. people can think what they want, but at least get the information before doing a story on that.

sharyl: i have won emmy award, not to pat myself on the back, but i guest i just did, for investigating democrat as well. but a narrative was established about me when i started look into uncomfortable narrative. i had to leave cbs news. and i quit for awide variety of reasons. howie: you go after a number of liberal targets, media matters. but the questions about how hillary clinton's healthcare developed into a smear. sharyl: the children tons wer -e quintessential.

difficult for the former vp nominee to win that suit, because the supreme court says a public figure must prove that they used reckless disregard or an intent to harm. that story should never have been published. the "new york times" headline said trump kept at arm's length in health talk. talk. president trump hitting back with these tweets. the failing "new york times" writes false story after false story about me. they don't even verify the story. a fake news joke. the media says i am not engaged in healthcare. wrong. i know the subject well. the story said the president was leaving most of the arm switching to mitch mcconnell.

that wasn't entirely wrong. on the day obamacare revision was yanked. some media conservatives and other outlets are down playing the setback. while the was embarrassing for republicans, we still don't know if the bill is dead or just on the critical list. "the washington post" accuses donald trump of fake news at his golf courses.
