north korea's increasingly aggressive behavior is sure to be a topic of major concern. kevin smith joins us live from the white house. >> you are on the money on that, molly and happy fourth of july, happy independence day to you and everybody else, especially over there. let me tell you what we do know. this will enhance the conversation for president trump, and particular when he talks to our allies of the g20 summit. i think this is also important, it raises the stakes for both russia and for china to somehow rein in the rogue regime in the north. we could be looking at a humanitarian catastrophe you have to come. let me share some of the details that we know about the launch. it went off on july 3rd at exactly two: 40:00 p.m. as we then pointed out, there's

tension with the united states and china regarding north korea is that chinese president said a day ago. he said he wants the united states to start taking down and rolling back its missile defense system but it hasn't south korea. of course, the fact that north korea just tested what they say is an intercontinental ballistic missile means it's unlikely the u.s. is going to do that. potentially, china could be more understanding of our missile defense capabilities than they are now. of course, there is much more could do. they haven't been a particularly helpful partner in the last few months as north korea has been more belligerent. >> molly: the president has made it very clear that he considers china to be critical as far as running a north korea and as betsy noted when she brought up president she, he will be meeting up with the leaders of china. how do you think that will go, that talk? do you think our american

president will put pressure on the chinese president and vice versa? >> i expect them to. i expect a little bit of pressure put on the president of china. this is an opportunity for president trump to make a mark on the foreign stage. north korea's more outspoken and issues. as a chance for them to make a mark on this. i think the g20 summit is going to be critical for him, especially in the north korean front. >> molly: 's went to make him look at a meeting. japan's prime minister said on tuesday that he expects both the president of china and the president of russia to play more constructive roles as far as writing a north korea. president trump also excited to meet with russian president vladimir putin when he heads there to germany. will that be a critical meeting as well and will this topic be on top of the agenda? there's a lot of these two could be talking about.

>> the president to china so the kremlin is on the same page as he has when it comes to the american defense missile system. as a distinct possibility that president trump and president putin will talk about what putin thinks about the united states footprint on the korean peninsula. bruton has been very frustrated, very opposed to the united states expanding its military presence anywhere near russia's borders, so it would certainly make sense if that's an issue. that said, of course the united states and china also have a ton to talk about. trump has been quite tough on china over the past few weeks, the state a permit label china one of the worst kinds of human traffickers. we recently rolled out an arms deal with taiwan, the president announced to congress. and the treasury department announced new sanctions on a chinese bank. heading into g20, heading into the rest of the week, president trump has taken a pretty aggressive, pretty hawk's position. it's unlikely that will be -- it's likely that will be part of

new jersey had seven half years of chris christie and we've seen similar occasions where he dances like no one is watching and this is another case where he didn't think about optics of being on that beach. >> leland: let's break this down. dance like nobody's watching, that was advice at my high school graduation, but i could have it misplaced. even way, he had to know what the optics were going to look like. it's a closed state park, they were turned away, this wasn't his first rodeo, he knew what he was doing, he knew he was going to a beach that was closed to everybody else. he knew that the airspace is open, he knew that he was a governor and taking the new jersey state helicopter so he wouldn't be hard to track. he also knew that he has a brother who has a beach house a couple of towns away and could have gone they are. how much of this is thumbing his

nose at the citizens of new jersey? >> i don't think he really expected new jersey's advanced media which has these wonderful pictures to go ahead and get those pictures. he had taken some flack earlier today. people knew he was pretty upfront he was going to the beach house. he ran into some problems there. he went out on sunday and day two of his vacation and didn't think about what it might look like if pictures like that appeared. >> leland: and then all of a sudden, you'll notice he's wearing a baseball hat and that had becomes important because later in the day, he was asked, did you get any son today and he said no, which a lot of people in the press thought was disingenuous at best, borderline on dishonest. and meant he had been out on the

beach and in the sun. all of a sudden, he had his spokesperson yesterday go, he didn't get any son, he had a hat on. i asked brian murphy, his spokesman yesterday, about just that issue. is the governor taking the shutdown seriously enough? and quibbling over a hat? >> brian said that was a smart aleck response to this question, the hat. he was really caught off guard by the question, where you on the beach today? this was sunday. the photographer, he has said since then, you can see the pictures. the governor is looking right at the camera from the airplane. it's puzzling that he didn't know that he would be asked about it. >> leland: puzzling is a word for it, we appreciate you being here. there is a piece written by the fellow who took those pictures and he said, i saw chris

koreans have been doing. i think u.s. policymakers are looking to see if it did hit certain thresholds. there are certain questions about whether or not these technologies can survive at certain levels in the atmosphere and how advanced they are. as a further test, is troublesome and they are continuing to do what they do, so we need to respond and some fashion. >> molly: donald trump has previously tweeted that it won't happen as far as the missile being able to reach the country and recently, he was meeting with the leaders from south korea and he said essentially the same sort of thing, that the arab strategic patients has failed. which of the president do now? speak on the president is definitely dedicated to making sure that we push them back. he wants to do something, i think he'll need to revisit negotiations with china, getting them to weigh in. we have to get the allies in the regions to do something and do something tough. he is not a guy with a bad

wardrobe in a terrible haircut, kim jong-un, he's dangerous, he's provocative, he's not going to relent on his own. i think china is the answer. >> molly: is there a diplomatic solution? as the president has overseas to the g20 meeting, a lot of powerful leaders there. certainly a lot of countries want to see this rain and from japan. is there a diplomatic solution that could work or is there another step taken? >> that's tough, i think there is diplomatic goals and tipple medic allegiances that we can make with our allies, but ultimately we need to see some concessions that we are not seeing. unless there is some sort of back channel with our allies in the region, china being able to get them to take a second look at this, eventually we are going to have more and more friction and it's going to come to looking at potential military options. i think there is some opportunities still and with china, especially, to take some pressure that will be effective.

>> molly: with china, there have been friendly meetings between president trump and the president of china and others had to meet again, but it comes in the wake of a lot of actions the demonstration is taken and imposed sanctions on the chinese bank. various human rights violations. the u.s. filing more than $1 billion of weaponry to taiwan. that won't necessarily warm things up. right now, the president has said that the chinese are a major partner in stop and was happening in north korea, so this set things up to make things more awkward heading into these meetings? >> it's definitely a difficult job. on this particular issue, we need china, chinese the u.s. i think that's where the challenge will have to look at it like chess. will have to make some modest concessions here and there when it comes to messaging on the way we go about these issues, but ultimately, the problem

continues to get bigger. all those issues are causing friction and it's what makes these jobs hard, they need to find a common ground and move forward with what we can agree on. >> molly: is this the center point? is this the one issue that all countries can put aside all their other issues to address? isn't that important? >> yes, they should. they are testing muscles, it's a very provocative actions and it's a long history of north korea doing these things. for folks in the u.s. military, we recall a war that happen there that's still ongoing. it's a very real reality for them, so we need to get some sort of solution that makes sense and head in a direction where we start to see our reduction and some of these developments. >> molly: chris, thank you for your service and thanks for joining us, happy fourth of july. >> thank you. >> leland: across the american southwest, more than two dozen wildfires continue to burn

out of control. colorado to nevada to california. hot, dry, and windy weather can be a deadly combination and it is making the fight against those fires difficult, at best. jonathan hunt live in los angeles with more. hi jonathan. >> hi, leland. with another heat wave coming to the west this week, firefighters across the region are battling against time to try to knock down a number of fires scorching hundreds of thousands of acres in all. in nevada, these frightening flames shut down iad in both directions for a time as hundreds of firefighters took on the flames. the interstate has been reopened, but the fire remains only 20% contained and has burned close to 7,000 acres >> the way the wind was shifting, you could see it, it's moving in all types of different directions. it's very spread out. >> in arizona, more than 20

wildfires are currently burning, five of them in the national forest southeast of tucson. 86,000 acres burned in that area alone, almost 200,000 acres and total across the state and 3700 federal state and local fire team members are working on defeating the fires and fires are burning as far north as oregon. here in california, two significant fires are burning in the center of the state with more than 1,700 acres and fresno. the entire region braced for much more to come as temperatures here are expected to soar from tomorrow. it's looking like a long, hot summer for firefighters in the west. >> leland: as you know, wildfire season just now beginning and already so many burning out of control.

don't want it. who >> molly: boyd, are they interested in paying republik in games or can they not with all their votes? >> i think it's both sides of the aisle that are the problem in this one, leland. both parties are raising hundreds of millions of dollars office issue, so let's give the repeal in there with a long fuse in terms of implementation so we can actually have dialogue and discussion on what the future of health care should be. the reality is obamacare is going away, whether collapses under its own weight or whether it's repealed by congress, it is going away. let's get some people in the room, let's get mike lee and ben sass, and let's get joe manchin, and cory booker, and let's have a real, honest, open debate, not the scare tactics, not grandmas off the cliff where we're going to socialized medicine, let's get to the real discussion about health care which is in and the current senate bill. i agree with jose on that point. >> leland: boyd, what could say derek's dream about not

this piece of a new york is one of the major cities across the country gearing up for fireworks tonight and toleration for july 4th and police are beefing up security for the big event as well. laura ingle is live from battery park. what's the latest? >> thousands of firework loving revelers will be letting the streets and sidewalks all went down new york's east river tonight. already has her eyes gazing up to look at that big show in the sky. the nypd will be keeping their eyes on everything else to make sure that this event is staying safe. new york's finest are causally updating and adjusting security measures for every day and big event protection and this year, the nypd will have find -- many are at checkpoint sites with detectors, bank searches, and people notice large trucks blocking streets. the nypd started using these trucks were parade routes and other public gatherings after last year's bastille massacre
