>> harris: politics. this is how they do it in parliament in taiwan. don't agree with your budget and infrastructure? hit them with a chair. i like the air horn here. if it's not rowdy enough, get a stick. here's shep. >> shepard: it's noon on the west coast. 3:00 in washington. we're watching now for the fall out for the latest revelation about donald trump jr.'s russian sit-down. american lobbyist confirmed that he attended a meeting at trump tower during the campaign. ahead, what we know about that lobbyist. his background, his admitted links to soviet military and russian spies and his reported connection to a global hacking case. also, what he says the president's son requested during that meeting. as president trump right now returns from his trip to paris, he's facing more headaches. lawmakers now asking whether the trump campaign worked with russian to distribute fake news stories before the election.

the man that ran the trump team's digital operations say it didn't happen and he's offering to temperature about it. a deadly attack at the holiest jewish site in jerusalem. police accusing arab citizens of killing israeli officers. let's get to it. who else was in the meeting? the meeting with the russian lawyer reported to have russian information on hillary clinton? the first son, the first son-in-law, the russian lawyer, the campaign manager, an interpreter and brand new today, a russian-american lobbyist that served in a spy unit of the soviet military. he was there, too. nobody mentioned that. e-mails this week showed donald trump jr. met with the lawyer after a middleman told him that she was a russian government official who had information that was part of russia's

support for donald trump. trump jr.'s lawyers confirmed another person was at the meeting and now we know the person is a former counter intelligence officer. the man himself calls that a smear campaign. he's a lobbyist for russia trying to get sanctions reduced. in an interview with the associated press, the man admits that he served in the soviet army in the 80s in a unit that was loosely part of counter intelligence. he says the soviet army never trained him as a spy. be that as it may, american prosecutors in the year 2015 accused him of carrying out and international hacking conspiracy. the daily beast reports the allegations were withdrawn. the man tells "the washington post" newspaper test of last year's meeting, he was lobbying against financial punishments that the united states placed on russian for human rights violations. president trump this week praised his son for being open and for being transparent.

after donald trump jr. discussed those e-mails we mentioned in an interview with fox news host sean hannity. here's one notable exchange from that interview. >> this is, as far as you know, are all the e-mails that exist on this case and you don't think there's any others? >> i don't think there's anything else. we scoured it thoroughly to be sure. there isn't anything else there. >> shepard: there isn't anything else there. the president's son never revealed the russian lobbyist was at the meeting. donald trump jr. said nothing came of it. the woman said she knew nothing about illegal contributions but her claims made no sense. the lobbyist said the man brought a plastic folder with printed out documents detailing what the lawyer believed was the flow of the illegal funds. the lobbyist showed them the information and suggested making it public could help donald trump win the election.

it wasn't until nbc news broke the story that trump jr. confirmed another person was at the meeting. trump jr. released the e-mails. the president's son posted them to twitter minutes before "the new york times" was going to publish details from the same message. "the new york times" told him so. when the times first broke the story over the weekend, trump jr. called it a short introductory meeting that primarily involved a program about the adoption of russian children. that was the first statement. the next day, donald trump admitted an acquaintance told him the individual he was meeting with people that might have information for the campaign. trump jr. said, i love it. what a tangled web we weave. john roberts live in paris where the president earlier marked bastille day with his french counterpart. anything we're learning about

the new revelations, john? >> one thing we know about the revelations, they're very convoluted and difficult to straighten them out. first of all, you have the russian-american lobbyist. he does hold a u.s. citizenship. he's a colleague of the lawyer working certain individuals for russian sanctions. while we're told the man is a member of the soviet military from 1986-88, he was never trained in counter intelligence. he does not hold any water. now we're learning, shep, that he may not have been the only person in that room that we don't know about. allen feterfass told me earlier today he has spoken to another person who says that he was in that room, another russian american, who he says is a u.s.

citizen as well and has no ties at all to the russian government or russian intelligence. the question that we have, what were the two individuals doing in the room. were they part of the lobbying effort, were that there to help interpret? i've gotten various statements from people as to what they might have been doing in that room. no one is quite clear. what is clear though is that the president is standing up for his son at the press conference yesterday with the french president, emanuel macron. the president said there's not a lot to see here. listen to what he said. >> my son is a wonderful young man. he took a meeting with a rush young lawyer, not a government lawyer, but a russian lawyer. it was a short meeting. it was a meeting that went very quickly, very fast. two other people in the room. i guess one of them left almost immediately. the other was not focused on the

meeting. from a practical standpoint, most people would have taken that meeting. >> now, may well be there was no wrong doing here. certainly politically it looks bad. here's an example. i report, you decide. we're told by donald trump jr.'s attorney this afternoon the reason why the story keeps changing here is because for the principals involved, donald trump jr., paul manafort and jared kushner, this meeting was so unremarkable, so insignificant in its content the three had forgotten about most of it by the time it was over, shep. >> shepard: wait. donald trump jr. was given information that there was russian information from a russian lawyer that was going to be imparted to him in a meeting. he thought it significant enough to bring in donald trump's son-in-law and the man in charge of everything and the campaign manager in the meeting and it

was so nothing that he forgot about it? there was a russian interpreter in the room. >> as i said, shep, i report, you decide. that's what i'm being told. >> shepard: we're hearing from the top democrat on the house intelligence committee, adam schiff. >> we are. as you can imagine, the democrats are having a field day about this. gives new fuel to the fire in their call for further investigations. adam schiff in a statement, part of which said "today's report that a former russian counter intelligence officer was also present in the meeting with donald trump jr., jared kushner and paul manafort. if accurate, it adds another secret fact about this meeting. paints a portrait of deceit when it comes to the campaign officials and meadaries." they will hammer the trump white house over the head with this for as long as they can. it brings up something that lanny davis wrote a book about

after his years with the clinton administration and all the scandals. lanny davis said, when you get yourself in a spot like this, you tell the truth, tell it early, tell it all and you tell it yourself. take the bad medicine and it's over. otherwise, it just continues to drip, drip, drip. at this point, shep, we're will into the drip, drip. >> shepard: there's a flood. we're learning more about how the russian lawyer got into the united states. >> the president blamed loretta lynch. she was allowed in an immigration parole in order to be involved in a court case involving a client of hers in september of 2015. she was paroled in the country several times between that date and february of 2016. that's when her parole ended. she was back in the country for the meeting with donald trump jr. she was allowed in on a nonimmigration visa. we have not been able to connect the dots to find out if loretta lynch signed off on that or if

it was just part of the process because there was a liaison between the department of justice and the u.s. attorney's office for the southern district of new york that was handling the case that she was involved in, shep. >> shepard: john roberts tonight from paris. thanks very much. we're learning more about the russian american lobbyist and his background. trace gallagher has more. give us the rundown. >> we know that the man was on the u.s. radar before he was named as being part of the meeting with donald trump jr. he was lobbying for years to get the act passed bycology in 2012 that placed sanctions on dozen of wealthy businessmen and human rights violators being accused in murder. the senate judiciary committee, chuck grassley sent a letter to the department of justice accusing the man of lobbying

illegally because he never registered under fara. he denies that he was ever a russian counter intelligence agent and said he didn't believe he needed to file as a foreign agent. so he registered with congress. he says that he would love to testify before the senate judiciary committee to tell his side of the story. shep? >> shepard: trace, investigators accuse this man in this meeting of being involved in an international hacking conspiracy. >> exactly. 2014, he was accused in both state and federal courts and orchestrating a hack against a russian mining company called international mining resources. court documents said he broke into the company's main computers and steal confidential materials in an effort to smear the company. the documents say that he was overheard by private investigators boasting about the hack. he denies the accusations, but does admit passing around a hard drive filled with data about the

>> well, i think you have to put it in context. clearly this was attempted collusion. it may have been bungled collusion. the administration said there was nothing to see. there was fake news. no serious contact or meaningful contact between trump world and the russians, that's dead. that credibility of that is completely shot. now, it may be that nothing came out of this meeting. that's what we're being told both by the russians and by the trump side. you look at -- in black and white at those e-mails at the former british tabloid reporter turned publicist saying that this is information coming from the prosecutor, the russian state prosecutor, this is part of an effort by the russian

government to tip the election to trump and there's going to be damaging information about hillary clinton and then you have the immediate response from donald jr. saying i love it, there was, as i say at the very least attempted collusion. >> shepard: steve hayes, panelist on bret baier's show, says if the meeting was a waste of time and a nothing burger, why lie after lie? brit hume replied good question. if it was a nothing burger, when came of it? the lies. one after another after another after another, chris. they are of note. worthy of reporting and worthy of considering as a constituent. >> yeah, this really shouldn't be a matter of liberal versus conservative, pro trump versus anti-trump. if you're a fair-minded citizen, you ought to be concerned about the fact that we were repeatedly

misled about what this meeting concerned. reince priebus, the white house chief of staff was on this program on this desk last sunday. he said this was a meeting about adoption. that was the story at that point. the story that had been approved by the white house. i don't know whether priebus knew anything more about it or not. that was not what the meeting was about. as we learned later that day after the sunday shows were over from "the new york times," not from anybody in the trump world, that this was a meeting to try to get dirt about hillary clinton. then we learned on tuesday, as i say in black and white from the e-mails, this was supposed to be and what the trump folks took the meeting to accomplish was the russian government trying to give information about hillary clinton as part of an effort to swing the election to donald trump. so you know, you're exactly right. we've been told a variety of

stories. we've gotten -- who knows if we've gotten to the end of the story. >> shepard: i know we haven't. i know we haven't. there's news breaking at the moment, chris. >> okay. >> shepard: fox news can confirm new, more. donald trump jr., jared kushner, paul manafort, the lawyer from russian, the interpreter, this new guy we found out about today and a mystery person. john roberts confirmed there was an eighth person in that meeting. we don't know. there may have been more. there may have been an eighth. jared kushner filled out his form. it's an f-86 saying who he met with and what he had done. very important stuff. you can go to prison for messing it up intentionally. he went back and added 100 names and places. none of these people made it. still not -- we're still not clean on this, chris. if there's nothing there and that's what they tell us, they tell us there's nothing to this and nothing came of it, a nothing burger, it wasn't

memorable. didn't tell you about it because it wasn't anything so i didn't even remember it with a russian interpreter in the room at trump tower. if all of that, why all of these lies? why is it lie after lie after lie? if you clean, come clean. my grandmother used to say when first we practice to -- oh, what a tangled web when we practice to deceive. the deception, chris is mind boggling. there's still people out there that believe we're making it up. one day they're going to realize we're not. look around and go, where are we? why are we getting told all these lies? >> you know, i don't know what to say. i think that there's a lot of truth to everything that you've said. as john roberts pointed out, i can -- look, i can understand why donald trump jr. didn't want to put this information out. those e-mails are certainly damaging. you know, to have somebody saying this is part of the

russian government trying to help your dad when the president says he says it is what you say it is, "i love it", that's bad. having said that, it will come out eventually and did come out. they all ought to sit down right now in the oval office, in the white house, they ought to -- everybody involved in the campaign and they ought to sit there and say anybody you knew that -- from the first time you had beef stroganoff, it may be bad, embarrassing but we can't keep having this new information dribble out. we still don't know whether a crime was committed. let's be clear on that. >> shepard: we certainly do not. >> we don't know if a crime was committed. we do know that we were misled a number of times repeatedly about this meeting, what went on in other meetings. we have a case of mike flynn that lied to the vice president who came on this show in

how it was that russia seemingly knew where to place fake news during the election cycle. adam schiff and others have been asking, is it possible that the trump campaign shared information with russia or conversely received information from russia that could have helped that fake news process along. it's interesting and important that they're finally going to get to talk to brad parscale who is in the best position to explain how the data operation worked. >> shepard: along the same lines, there was all the allegations that the russians had produced fake news. produced fake stories with an eye toward hurting hillary clinton's campaign. there were many questions along the way, julie. they had been raised here. how will the russians know where to put this sort of thing for maximum use? the allegation, i guess, is that the trump campaign, the digital

side, helped them? >> that's something that lawmakers wonder about. i suspect that when brad parscale talks to lawmakers, it will be a fairly detailed conversation about how exactly campaign data works. and the trump campaign received its data mostly from the republican national committee, which had spent tens of millions of dollars developing a voter file. it's important to remember that a lot of this information isn't super secret. it's easy to read news articles and different websites to figure out where the battleground states are. so i'll be interested to learn after that meeting with brad parscale whether they feel satisfied that, you know, the campaign didn't give anything to russia and feel satisfied that if they had some sort of information, it was obtained through a natural or public information method. >> shepard: we'll know more next week. great article. nice to see you again.

have said they have opposed it. they're on the record saying no. the bill will fail if just one more gop lawmaker comes out against it. senator rand paul says it doesn't do enough to repeal obamacare and senator susan collins said she can't support the bill because of deep cuts to medicaid. there's others that are waivering on the matter and have not yet taken a position. mitch mcconnell says we will be voting next week. mcconnell says he expects the cbo score to come out next week. senator mcconnell cancelled a vote on the original healthcare bill after ten republican senators voiced their opposition. a spokesperson for the largest doctor's group says the revised gop healthcare bill falls short on coverage and falls short on access, particularly for low income people on medicaid. mike emanuel covering this live on capitol hill. mike? >> shep, this legislation is on the edge right now. one more republican no and the senate is stuck again.

some republicans are actively selling some aspects of this legislation they consider to be victories in the bill. >> the biggest tax in many ways in obamacare were the employer and individual mandates. those are gone in this draft. i think that, you know, there are elements that like that, that are in some ways being overlooked. >> there's also talk of plan b. if support crumbles. lindsay graham is selling his backup plan. >> how about this good simple republican idea? we're going to take all the money around obamacare and all the policy, get it out of washington, send it back to the states so south carolina can come up with its own way of dealing with healthcare for south carolinians. california can do something else. >> a key piece of information will come with that congressional budget office analysis next week, shep.

>> shepard: what is the latest from the democrats? >> they're making a case that there's some aspects very bad for the american people. the senate leaders going after the majority leader for cutting august recess short. >> leader mcconnell needed something. his bill was so unpopular. needed a shiny object to divert attention. he said we're going to stay here for two more weeks. the problem though is not the amount of time. they've had six months in this session of congress and seven years since obamacare passed. >> tension is high. i'm told a lot of these senate officers are hearing from constituents and outside groups urging them not to support the bill, shep. >> shepard: mike emanuel, thank you. good news. nana in heaven, i know you watch from your place in heaven this hour. you are my close family after all. it is now proclaimed when it comes to president trump's travel ban according to a federal judge in hawaii who says it's common sense that

grandparents are close family members. the ruling covers the entire country. it comes a couple of weeks after the supreme court allowed the trump administration to enforce parts of the travel ban. it applies to these six predominantly muslim countries and banned everybody who have except what they call a bona fide relationship in the united states which did not include grandparents, grandchildren, brothers in law, nieces and nephews and cousins. u.s.a.! the judge in hawaii says that those people should be considered close family. also loosen the rules to allow some refugees to enter the country as long as there's a formal agreement between the united states and refugee settlement agency. the ruling is not the final say. the supreme court is set to hear this case in october. the justice department says they will repeal the latest ruling. in a statement, jeff sessions says the hawaii court has undermined national security and

created confusion. laura is here from the "wall street journal." we share common ownership. this travel ban thing, initially it was said to be an urgent and pressing matter that would only last a matter of a few months. now we've about gotten out of that. they're still fighting it hard, huh? >> absolutely. i mean, when we look at where this started, it was a very sweeping ban. it had seven countries, as you recall. iraq was part of it. it was everybody. it was supposed to take effect immediately. it's been chipped away considerably since then. you know, we shouldn't assume this is all going away, even if the court ruling stands. this is a very live matter. part of the executive order asked the department of homeland security to look at every country on the globe and seeing what they're doing about vetting people. if they're not, they can be banned too. there could be more travel bans to come.

what the supreme court does is very important. >> most of the people that took down the planes downtown, most of them were from saudi arabia. they're not on the list, right? >> that's true. that point has been made again and again by people. there's one of the best arguments against this. there's no sort of data that shows that these particular countries are of a particular risk. that said, there's a more thoughtful underway of review right now which might have a better chance to stand up in court. you're right. the 9-11 attackers were not from these six countries. >> shepard: the claim of the lawyers representing hawaii come along many lines. among them, universities, culture. they make all sorts of reasons why this sort of a blanket ban in these six countries is wrong for their people and their state. >> yes, they do. it's interesting also because the supreme court really, while they did allow it to go forward, they did narrow it by saying if you have a close relationship or

any kind of bona fide and actual relationship with somebody who is living in the united states, this doesn't affect you. the administration chose to define that fairly narrowly. i guess your nana wouldn't have been included, grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews. they didn't include fiances. at the last minute that same day, that evening, they changed it and allowed fiances to be included. there's been a lot of confusion about who is in, who is not. seems like there's a strong argument from the state of hawaii's point of view now to say that how do you say that a grandparent is not a close family member? >> shepard: do we have a sense of how the court may rule on this? >> well, we really don't. we also don't know exactly how this is going to happen. whether this is going to be taken up directly by the supreme court, whether it's going to go through the ninth circuit court of appeals. but right now, this is the -- this ruling is in effect, i

kratz. the other is cosmo denardo. denardo admitted he killed the men and buried their remains on his parent's farm. he also apologized. >> you admitted to killing four people. nothing to say, cosmo? >> i'm sorry. >> why did you do it? >> shepard: i'm sorry. the lawyer for denardo said his client confessed in exchange for prosecutor's agreeing not to seek the death penalty. somebody that claims to know denardo shared this recent snapshot photo of him. snap chat photo, with the philadelphia inquirer and the daily news. shows denardo pointing a gun. he suffers from a severe mental illness and spent time in a mental institution. according to court documents, denardo said that he and kratz killed the men after setting up deals to sell them marijuana. rick levinthal with more.

what happened in court today? >> neither of the defendants was here in person. they appeared one by one on a monitor on the judge's bench. sean kratz was first. he did not have a lawyer. the judge urged him to get one. he didn't have bail due to the risk to the community. the judge agreed. he's not going anywhere. so denardo was next. he had an orange jump suit and glasses. he had an attorney. the assistant district attorney called denardo a tremendous danger and asked for no bail. the judge agree again. >> as a result of an agreement that i decided to make with cosmo denardo, we were able to

also secure jimmy patrick's body and bring him home as well. >> the d.a. says without that deal, they probably still would be looking for him, shep. >> shepard: details of this, rick, are hard to read. >> yeah. they're hard to record. according to denardo's confession, all four of the men went to his parent's farm for pot deals. the first to arrive there was jimmy patrick. he was alone on wednesday night. apparently denardo led him to a remote area and shot and killed him and buried him with a backhoe on the 80 acres that authorities have been searching all week. and then another man shot by both men and dumped in a converted oil tank. the other two showed up later that night. they were shot, put in the same tank, set on fire and buried 12 to 13 feet below ground using

>> shepard: new video that shows israeli police shooting and killing a man that was part of a group of attackers that killed two israeli officers. this happened in jerusalem at a major jewish and muslim holy site. the video is graphic. we won't show the whole thing.

there it is again. you can see a man lying on the ground before he gets up. officers shoot him. they say he had a knife and lunged at him. police say they shot and killed two other attackers. the suspects were arab citizens of israel. here you can see a dozen bullets a pair of jeans which officials say belongs to one of the attackers. police say they cleared the holy spot and closed it for prayers today. a group of palestinian muslims gathered to pray outside that mosque. our correspondent john huddy is live where police are opening parts of the old city where the attack happened, john. >> that's right. they shut down nine entrances leading to the old city.

this is one of them, this is the damascus gate entrance. throughout the aftermath of the attack, police were restricting the number of people and who was going in there. they don't like the light on them. they're restricting who goes in, who goes out. they continue to do that. it's unusual that they shut down all the entrances. it's also unusual, rare, that they shut down the entire temple and mosque compound because of the severity of today's attack. police released video. it's disturbing. it shows one of the attackers shooting a police officer from behind. we know two officers died because of their wounds. we know police shot and killed the three arab israeli attackers. that's worth noting, that they're israeli citizens. there's palestinians that get across the border into israel illegally or smuggled across.
