11:00 am
congratulations. >> he recruited his colleagues to propose to his girlfriend, and she said yes. we will see what the conversation was at home. "america's newsroom hq" starts now. >> fox news alert, g.o.p. senators are wrapping up their meeting at the white house. where health care reform was main course. he intends to keep his promise about repealing and replacing obamacare. we are going to start with white house chief correspondent,
11:01 am
the president made a forceful pitch with g.o.p. senators toda today. >> he gathered together most of the republican senators to basically tell them, i don't understand what's going on here. isn't this what you folks promised on doing over and over again. today he's basically challenging these centers by saying you've been taking the easy way out. now that you think you might change things, you blocked it. >> i've been here six months, i'm ready to act. i have pen in hand.
11:02 am
you never had that before. for seven years, you've had an easy route. i'm signing it. so is a little bit different. i'm ready to act. in seven years, you promised the american people you would repeal obamacare. people are hurting and inaction is not an option. >> the president basically called them out. the president also going back to his original plan to not just repeal obamacare, but to repeal it and replace it. >> we have to stay here. we should hammer this out and get it done. and not just a repeal, but we
11:03 am
ought to get more. the people of this country need more than a repeal, we need a repeal and replace. >> so it doesn't look like that repeal is going to fly in congress. it's interesting, immediately after the president was finished, top congressional aide on capitol hill tech to meet saying, was that sales pitch back in february? >> melissa: he said most of the centers, so all of them were not there. >> yes, senator mccain continues to recover.
11:04 am
i think most of the remaining centers were at that luncheon. one senator who was there was any uncomfortable position. it's no secret that the president was upset that he was going to come out against the repeal and replace bill. the president basically saying, senator heller if he wants to remain in the senate. there's no question that he will do what's right to hang onto his seat in nevada. if he thinks it's a good idea, he will sign on. he's not going to sign on just for any bill.
11:05 am
>> bill: and it was no coincidence that he was sitting right to his right. very interesting. the president calling for backup help on health care. >> on their way to the bus that was taking all of the centers to launch at the white house, the whole point of this meeting is to get republicans on the same page, and remind them we all promised to repeal and replace obamacare. i also spoke to louisiana senator, who hopes that they can walk out with the same type of optimism. >> i think i for one is very
11:06 am
interested in getting this thing done. i think they will be a meeting of if we can get this done. >> before this launch, he said the point of this lunch for him was to figure out how he can get behind his leaders. >> i'm not going to make demands, but i will see how we can find common ground. legal so even though it >> so ee been pushing back lately, are trying to find ways to get things done. >> bill: which senators are right now making demands? >> we know there are senators that have a specific ideas for the president.
11:07 am
if the replacement act or draft has consumer protection. some other senators are concerned about the medicaid spending decades from now. so is not a mystery of what these senators want, it's just how to figure out how to give them all what they want in the same bill. >> bill: fox news contributor, and senior columnist, thank you both for joining us. where do we stand on this and what was accomplished at that lunch if anything? >> i think we saw donald trump back on the campaign trail.
11:08 am
and that is to run against not only democrats but also republicans. he laid it down harsh markers, and how many times they voted to repeal obamacare. and suddenly when he was going to sign it, they renege. he also went on the attack of president obama, saying he lied about keeping patients under the same plan and doctor. it's unusual talk for washington, but is very effective of how to get out of this jam. >> bill: you can really feel him putting the pressure on.
11:09 am
to me that puts mitch mcconnell leadership in question. >> melissa: erick erickson said something similar, listen to how he reacts. >> wears tax reform, it goes to the senate and all of the sudden it dies. the way they structured obamacare repeal, they only needed 50 votes plus the president. they can even get that done. >> melissa: is mcconnell in jeopardy? >> i don't think he is and i don't agree with his analysis. the votes are not there. mcconnell may not be the leader you want, but he doesn't get to choose who is in the senate, the voters choose that.
11:10 am
you have a couple republican senators who have been campaigning on repealing obamacare. you can find the speeches in the past. and then all of a sudden, it's time to repeal it, and suddenly there against it. that's the problem here. to say is mcconnell is pretending he is the one who decides who is in the senate. >> melissa: what do you think happens here especially after calling out those senators? >> to be clear, the person to blame and the people to blame
11:11 am
are the leaders and that includes mitch o'connell mccon. for now, starting today, the question will be, who will voters pin obamacare and the failure on? i would put more faith on donald trump to pin it on democrats than democrats pinning that on republicans. >> melissa: we will see. we'll talk more about that on the other side of the break. also is the lunch with vladimir putin much about nothing? >> i've been here just six
11:12 am
months, i'm ready to act. i have pen in hand. across the country, we walk for those affected by alzheimer's disease. carrying flowers that signify why we want to end it. but what if, one day, there was a white flower for alzheimer's first survivor? what if there were millions of them? help make that beautiful day happen. join us for the alzheimer's association walk to end alzheimer's,

11:15 am
>> melissa: fox news alert, president trump's lunch with the senators is still going on. they are still talking. we will bring in opinion editor for "the washington times" ." welcome back. i want to talk to you about this meeting that was private, not so private with vladimir putin. it was a big dinner.
11:16 am
you can see that is the first lady who was sitting directly to the left of russian president. apparently what happened we are told, between courses or along the way, the president apparently went over and sat down in his wife's seat and carried on a very long conversation, over an hour with the russian president. only putin's translator was there helping. what do you think about all of this? >> it's looking more and more like sightings of bigfoot. it's all grainy and shadowy. i have more faith in bigfoot or
11:17 am
the loch ness monster than anything that happened here. i'm tired of democrats talking about this huge scandal involving russia. and they compare it to watergat watergate. watergate began with a crime and over time lead to the white house. this begins with people's hatred of donald trump. they are convinced that something is here. they are trying to find something that doesn't exist. >> melissa: is significant to me that they spoke for an hour or so. i'm not sure if it was so much collusion as presidential business. there's a lot of issues that need to be resolved between the two of them.
11:18 am
maybe they are talking about the many things going on around the world that actually need attention. >> it's possible that's what they were talking about. the two men are trying to get a better sense of one another. that's what i would send you think. if you asked me during the campaign, i wouldn't have said this. if you had told me we would be six months into trumps term after the way he campaigned and things he said about russia and vladimir putin, i would say we would be closer to a major confrontation with russia. i think that's where we are right now. we've come a lot closer to open hostility towards russia with trump so far.
11:19 am
i kind of prefer that the two men get to know each other a little bit then start world war iii. >> melissa: that is brilliant insight, what do you think about that? with the media hysteria that's going on between the two presidents. >> what's crucial here is the fact that vladimir putin is someone who responds best to people standing up to him. if he senses that he can walk all over you, she will walk all over you. that's all we saw the past eight years. and donald trump is eager to work with people. he has said many times that he
11:20 am
wants to combat terrorism, but the fact that when it comes to action, he's been a lot tougher than anybody we've had in the past decade. that's something that gets russia's attention varies nicely. >> melissa: thank you very much. also a major update against the fight against isis. we will have the very latest on that. plus more and more police departments are using aerial drones to fight crime. >> we are on the ground with police getting some training in here. and we are getting a bird's eyes view on how they are using this technology. that's all coming up.

11:25 am
save lives too. and also helping with investigations. earlier we visited a police department in maryland who recovered over $500,000 worth of machines. >> i would say that flight was about as perfect as they could get. we were in the air for a maximum of 10 minutes. >> and police departments often pay for these drones with money seized from drug offenders. >> melissa: people will have privacy concerns though. >> this will give police more power and tools to spy on law-abiding citizens

the commission is asking for information. a lot of this can be purchased so as not necessarily so secret. this can include sony's name, date of birth, registration date, address. >> what was weird about what happened was when the commission sent the letters to state officials asking for this information, and saying very specifically they were asking for information that was publicly available according to the laws of your state. we got a lot of angry responses from state officials. >> melissa: i hate to

11:37 am
american people that they want to keep the commitment they made during the elections. i think is better to both repeal and replace. but we could have a vote on either. if we end up voting on repeal only, it will be fully amenable on the senate for. also there is a two-year delay before it kicks in. so no harm is done by getting on the bill. wide open for amendments no matter what the substitute. >> reporter: are you experiencing some political whiplash or? >> we are having difficulty in getting 50 votes to proceed.
11:38 am
we are going to vote on the motion to proceed with the bill next week. we are going to have a vote on a motion to proceed on the bill next week. >> melissa: that was mitch mcconnell talking about the idea that they will be getting on the bill next week. they will have a vote to procee proceed. nothing changes if they take this vote, he says. at that point, anyone can offer amendments but basically they just sitting down and getting started on the work. there has to be a motion to proceed, in order to get starte

him rather smartly, does he feel political whiplash. it did seem like everybody was throwing dirt on the idea that it's dead and gone. and it turns out, he saying, we are just going to take it up and get started. and he is going to call everyone into session to vote. do you think they will take it up by virtue of shaming people? >> something not all that different happened in the house with that bill. they remembered they had been promising for eight years to repeal obamacare. in pledging they would do it and making it their top policy priority. i think in the senate they are doing the same thing.
11:41 am
they can't just walk away because they've been talking about this for so long. so mitch mcconnell said we have members that have difficulty in saying yes. i think mcconnell will be more of that before this vote next week. >> melissa: all you're doing is voting to work on it, he was saying. senators will join me to talk about what went down on lunch with the president.

>> melissa: he called out directly people that had voted against it. in others had voted back in 2015 in order to repeal obamacare when it meant nothing and no one there was going to sign it. he seemed very forceful. how much pressure did you feel in others feel? >> i think the president feels a sense of urgency about this. he made a commitment to the american people. there is an expectation on behalf of the american people that we get results and change the direction we are on in terms of health care in this country. you look at the individual and employer mandate. you make medicaid sustainable
