officers. alison barber is reporting. and doug mcelway. reporter: it's remarkably quiet almost as if people are deliberately avoiding the downtown area of the city. the death toll stands at three. one person deliberately mowed down by a vehicle and two officers killed in the crash landing of a virginia state police helicopter. the same helicopter monitoring and hovering over the protests all day long. white nationalist protesters scrapped with anti-white he presentist protesters. the governor singled out the white yo supremacisted as unwand

outcasts. >> i have a message. go home. you are not wanted in this great commonwealth. shame on you. you pretend that you are patriots. but you are anything but a patriot. reporter: mcauliffe did not single out the anti-protesters. i know from being in the thick of it, they were just as well armed as many of the white nationalists. they came out wearing helmets. baseball size sticks they used with great effect to also injure their opposition. nighter of the two sides came here today looking for peace.

the runaway car that deliberately ran through pedestrians. and then it did more damage running over pedestrians backwards. >> the male driver is in custody with charges pending. we are treating this as a criminal homicide investigation. i want to extend my appreciation for witnesses who hemmed with providing photos and video evidence. reporter: that investigation is under way as you see. two of the cars involved in that collision still in place as police take lots of photographs. very curious to see what the motivation of the driver of that car was. huge police presence in charlottesville. the helicopter hovering overhead

now replaced by a drone hovering overhead. julie: thank you so much. doctors treating a number of injuries from today's violent clashes. more than a dozen people were hit by that car. ellison barber is live at uva medical center. ellison, how is it there now? >> right now officials say that they are treating five people in critical condition and four in serious condition. a spokesperson for the hospital tells fox news 0 people were brought to uva medical center in addition to the nine in critical or serious condition. six are listed as fair, four are listed as good. one person passed away. the person killed during the clashes died after a car plowed into what police describe as

counter-protesters or anti-white nationalists. they say it was a happy scene, then the crash happened. here is what the police chief had to say about some of the injuries. >> their injuries range from life-threatening to minor. the crash took the life a 35-year-old female pedestrian as she was crossing the street. we are in the process of notifying her next of kin. reporter: police say 35 people were injured. they say none of those injuries happened because of law enforcement engagement. julie: president trump calling the violence sad and urging american unity. kristen fisher has been following the president's remarks. the president working all day long.

not a vacation by a long-shot. who is the president blaming for the violence? reporter: the president is declining to take sides. he's condemning the violence. but he's declining to explicitly blame any of the white supremacists or white nationalists involved. >> we are closely following the terrible event unfolding in charlottesville, virginia. we condemn in the strongest possible terms this agree justice play much hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides. reporter: that phrase right there, bigotry and hatred on many sides is what people on both sides of cap hip are having a proper -- on capitol hill are having a problem with.

any developments on that front? reporter: he did not tweet or talk about north korea today, but he talked about it as two press availabilities yesterday. he's standing by his statements that the u.s. military is locked and loaded, ready to deal with whatever threat north korea continues to push our way. he was continuing to issue some stern warnings to north korean leader kim jong-un. >> this man will not get away with what he's doing. if he does anything with respect to guam or any place else that's an american territory or american ally. he will truly regret it and he will regret it fast. reporter: last night president trump took two big phone calls about north korea. one to the chinese president xi jinping who is urging president

want your take on all the criticism coming in from both sides of the president when it came to denouncing the violence on both sides in charlottesville. and the governor virginia not preparing for this. and the permit was taken out by the right. but whose job is it to restore law and order in virginia. and your take on how the president addressed it today. >> my heart breaks out for the people of charlottesville. it's one of the best towns you will see in america. the fact it made national news in this way is tragic. what happened today was white supremacists committed domestic terrorism. but i want to point out so. americans every day live their lives in a way that benefit in a

color blind society and that what's they try to strive for. what today was was in many ways the worst of america but the fringe. america. most of americans don't live their lives like this. i'm getting if the news about the state troopers who died in the helicopter crash. but this is what i would say. i'm a former virginia beach prosecutor. i worked law enforcement. what happened today is every law enforcement's worst nightmare, to be outnumbered 10-1. they did the best called upon them. they conducted themselves i think by all accounts in today's volatile situation very, very well. i don't have all the facts yet so i'm not in a situation to condemn the governor. this is a volatile situation of

with fire, in this case i'm talking about fire with words. kim jong-un threatened that they will attack united states if we do anything to stop their nuclear program. that's something that even sanctions don't seem to have any success in and never have. trump is urging the chinese government to exert more pressure on the north korean regime. no president has had success there. but chinaen its president xi jinping is also asking the president to cool his head and lay back on the rhetoric. is rhetoric what is going to come down to whether military action is exchanged? >> we can't look at the rhetoric from president trump or kim jong-un or the tweets. you don't create foreign policy in 14 some characters.

julie: two people were killed in a helicopter crash near charlottesville. their deaths have been linked to the white supremacist rally. they are confirming they were officers. today's violence is the latest from a string of protests in charlottesville related to the removal of a statue of robert e. lee. reporter: this rally by white nationalists was about the city's decision back in february to remove the statue of confederate general robert e. lee from a public park. but it was also about hate and racism. it was allowed only after a federal judge overruled a

decision by the city to move the rally away from the park for safety concerns. the white supremacists marched through the campus. in may prominent white nationalist richard spencer protested there. we have seen this since july 2015 after protests against the confederate flag. the south carolina governor now u.n. ambassador nikki haley signed a bill removing the flag from the state capitol. in august, 2015, the university of texas removed it statue of jefferson davis.

the university of louisville in kentucky removed a 70-foot tall 120-year-old confederate monument commemorating kentucky yants who fought for the confederacy. the city removed four confederate statues there. the last of the statues was robert e. lee removed to the sound of cheers. there are an estimated 718 confederate monuments and statues nationwide. it's why everyone is paying attention to the language being used here. we'll see thing like this again. that's why people are paying attention to what the president is saying and what the message is. julie: the police chief has been given permission to call curfew on the city.

virginia has called a state of knowledge which gives the police chief there the ability to call a curfew if he feels it is needed. at this point it has not. from our latest worth from doug mcelway, he says things have calmed a bit. president trump turning to twitter to respond to the bloody and violent protests in charlottesville. thank you very much for talking to us. many in the media, the mainstream media are criticizing the president for not attacking, going after directly the alt-right as they are calling them and not calling out the white nationalists for basically being responsible for today's heinous activity, riots and aggression toward police, local law enforcement and anti-protesters. the whole thing is a mess.

what is the reaction to the president's handling? >> people are not happy about how the president responded to this. even some members of his own party have actually tweeted and made some comments that, hey, president trump you need to call this for what it is. it's striking when you have republicans like marco rubio and corey gardner in colorado calling the president out about this. my view is, do we have any doubt if this was a muslim terror attack that president trump would use the words radical islamic terrorism. he made a point of using those word a lot during the campaign and afterwards. so he set himself up as someone who thinks that you need to call violence by its name and call out the people who are causing it. so it is kind of disappointing, beyond disappointing to see him not do that when it's a

different group of people. julie: he's getting called out by both sides to be fair. marco rubio tweeted -- there were three tweets aimed at the president. the last one a direct shot. these haters in charlottesville are and 8ors in search of relevance and publicity for a vile cause. can't support them. here is a third one. and critical of the president. very important for the nation to hear potus describe the events in charlottesville for what they are, a terror attack by white supremacists. is it the president's job to call out the white supremacists or is it his job to remain neutral saying there were two sides that escalated into violent exchanges? >> i don't think you have to

stay neutral to point out that both side have been violent. but it would be easy for president trump to make a statement and say violence is not the answer to this un-american hatred and bigotry. there he would be calling out, some of the counter-protesters were violent. it would be very easy for him to call both groups out but have a strong statement on those groups. and by saying that, he's still calling it what it is. but he's saying both side are in the wrong here. it's true the violence the counter-protesters are involved in is not the answer and that will fuel these hateful people to continue what they are doing because they are liking the attention they are getting be as marco rubio point out. there was rally at the same spot the kkk people went earlier in july. there were three dozen people.

but the media covered it quite a bit. it's not helpful to have that kind of thing. julie: when black lives matters and that organization that held rallies and protests in states and cities all over the country for many many months, and some of them did get violent. people came out and called them out on that as well. both sides are responsible here. john mccain, i want to read a tweet from him. white supremacists aren't patriots, they are traitors. then he released a statement that you can find on twitter. but to be fair here. the president is getting it from both side including david duke. david duke has been at this rally you will day long and he is responsible for inciting this violence and pinning president trump to it when he has nothing to do with it. one of his many treats, after

decades of white americans being targeted for discrimination and anti-white hatred, we come together as a people and you attack us? >> one of the problems that when confronted with some of these same issues during the election campaign, donald trump seemed reticent to distance himself from these people and claim they support them. you are not necessarily responsible for who supports you. but you can make a strong statement when people in the public eye are claiming that they support you or have supported you and they are doing -- their actions are partly in response to your win as president. i don't think any time white supremacists say something about donald trump that the president needs to respond. but what happened today was not a normal thing. when you have david duke who again -- you have got someone like that, during the elections

donald trump seemed reticent to come out against him. julie: he denounced him and said -- and here today a perfect example of the president not in line with any of what david duke has to stand for and decrying any hatred that he has brought to the table. there is no connection between these two and it's sickening that david duke is using the president as justification for his evil. >> who would even hear about david duke anymore fit weren't for him using president trump to do this. you are right, both sides have been violent and the president doesn't necessarily have to make a statement he time someone says something. given the fact president trump is frank about a lot of things and normally it's someone who thinks of himself as a straight shooter truth teller. i think he could have done better in his response today and

"washington post" reporting it was registered to 20-year-old james alex fields. he was not from virginia. he is of ohio. how he got to virginia and what he was doing there remains to be seen. a man with the same name and age was booked on several charges including second degree murder
