>> so that massive manhunt continues in spain. 14 dead and hundreds injured. a big break news day. thank you for joining us. the theive us will be back tomorrow. >> see you tomorrow, have a good friday. >> bill: good morning, everyone. at the moment there is a massive manhunt under way in spain as authorities scramble to find the driver who plowed in to pedestrians in one of the busiest streets in barcelona. the incidents left a total of 14 dead and hundreds others injured at this hour. i am bill hemmer and shannon, good morning to you as well. >> shannon: i am shannon bream. isis claims responsibility for the deadly attacks and at least

one suspect is still on the run. police mounting a quick response to the second assault in cambrels. both attacks were linked. >> bill: barcelona's district is very popular. one of the center points of the city and 13 people killed and hundred injured there. the driver is still on the run today. >> shannon: in cam blis the suspect shot. and the police responded and killed all five suspects who were wearing explosive belts. >> who ever is responsible should know that the united states of america together with

our allies will find and punish those responsible and drive evil of islamic terror from the face of the earth. >> shannon: conner, what can you tell us about the manhunt under way. >> reporter: shannon, in the past few hours, authorities expanded the number of people involved they think in the twin attacks. it has gone up several time and no word whether or not there are more people involved. there is first and foremost a manhunt for ma usa okber. he is the one that drove the van they believe down on the las rambas promenade. okaber was the younger brother of one of those arrested yesterday. police are saying that the cell, the network of people is at

least ten people and that number could go up higher. the last time, the attacker and van driver was sdeen was yesterday after he fled the scene leaving a white van on the side. there is no word where he would be. after yesterday's attack town south in the beach sea side resort of cambril they are looking at a larger area than barcelona. obviously this group has connections in the entire barcelona area. >> shannon: conner, how are security forces reacting today. >> reporter: there is a lot of security in the city. armed guards and roads in here to las rambas was closed. the entire promenade is busy as it is most days. one big difference, it is closed to vehicles each side of the

promenade and there is a lot of armed guards and police officers. in barcelona, they are resilient. there was a rally and memorial service today where they had a moment of silence. the king and queen were here and they chanted we are not scared and not afraid. it is a resilient city. >> bill: these are the deadliest attacks for more than a decade in spain. a decade ago there was bombs on trains and 200 were killed that day and more than 1800 injured. the train attacks happened before the election and it was the deadliest attack in europe since the lockerbie bombing. >> shannon: nice, france.

a 31-year-old tunisian killed 86 people. isis claimed responsibility. and then in a christmas market killing fwefl and was shot by the police. isis took credit. and in london mouing down people on the bridge. once again isis claimed responsibility. and in june, london hit again. three isis terrorist slammed people in a van and went on a stabbing spree. and in april, stockholm, sweden. pedestrians mowed down on the streets five people killed including an 11-year-old girl. >> bill: president trump tweeted the united states condemns the

seems like it was done in a way was down lawful. >> right the maryland legislature voted and it was the governor okay with it and taking it down at night is a prudent decision not just fear of protest and major road work is done and a way to do things without interrupting people. we saw it in baltimore. the baltimore city council voted to remove a statue. and they did it in the middle of the night. there is a difference between doing that and letting the mob as we saw in carolina to. it is better to address the issues of what statues we want to keep up and different signs on and remind people of the history and not doing when

emotions are so high. >> shannon: the supreme court justice was removed scalia people were going to the poll and legislatures are voting and overnight take the debate away and suddenly tell people nine justices have changed anything. it was the best part of america seeing people passionate and having heated and respectful conversation. and there would be a place for that here and people feel like there is a voice. and this is done in a methodical way. >> i think there is a legitimate and debate about keeping up confederate memorials.

it is hurt when the face of that side as neo-nazis and kkk and white nationalist. it makes people go, wait a second if these bad people are on the side of keeping up the memorials, how can we be for it? it hurts, i think when the president of the united states doesn't denounce them specific he and with a vigor that he ought to and really anybody in public life ought to. it gives the white nationalist more power and white nationalist want it to be a debate about statues and in truth, they are trying to gain legitimacy. and that is two separate issues. >> shannon: they have gotten muddied up in the events in charlottesville. i want to share a comment from

the florida legislator. nine of them have connection to being a confederate idol or political leader or military leader. he said when they are in the capital they are in a place of reverence. i think the right side won the war. it is not right to destroy but put them in context and what these people stood for that are stanteding there as a statuor take them to a museum where they can be discussed but not on a pedastal and not revered and looked up to. >> i think that is right. my home state is georgia and the vice-president of the confederacy. he was a traitor to the united states. and we are all americans here. they should be put in museum and put in the proper context. but it is it the kind of things

a grand jury indicting the former i.t. employee of debbie wasserman schultz. he was arrested while he was trying to board a plane to fly to pakistan. garrett 10y joins us with more. >> reporter: the came against imran awan is expanding. his wife is indicted as a co-defendant as well. in january, the couple lied to obtain two eh witty lines of credit and then wired that money to several individuals to pakistan where there family is from. awan's wife left the country in march and not likely to return to the u.s. and these charges come a month after the i.t. staffer was arrested trying to

board a plane to pakistan. he and his wife and others collected 4 million working for various house democrats. and awan and other i.t. aides were on investigative radar over concerns of double billing and stolen equipment and access to sensitive computer equipment. these are bringing fresh scrutiny on debbie wawasserman schultz who kept him on the payroll for months. she said she had no regrets on her decision. i believed i would do the right thing and i would do it again. there are times you have to stand alone and what is right and it would have been easy tore just fire him. there is no court date set and possible additional charges could be brought as well.

several temdemand he and his family were under investigation and banned from accessing the part of the house i.t. system and he was on the payroll with debbie wasserman schultz standing by him. >> it is puzzling. he didn't have access to the security portion of the i.t. network because of questions of his activities. she kept him on to serve the computer system without the security access. it is important to go back to what garrett said. the charges that the grand jury put on him, have nothing to do with national security concerns. it is it all about the lying about an application instead of a secondary residence, he indicated he was getting a loan for a primary residence and sent

and radical islam must be stopped and with that peter king, sir, thank you for your time today. we learned that the cia had given spanish authorities warning two months ago. who knows how the channels were interpreted or followed up on. but spain has been tough on this. they changed their laws. what would be your concern based on what we have learned so far in the past 14 hours? >> it is so early in to this and it is it important to find out exactly what the cia told them and how they reacted to it and how specific it was. spain has done an excellent job. they have arrested hundreds of islamic terrorist over the few years and since 2004.

there hasn't been an attack. but they are in a position close to morocco. and you can get all of the warnings in the world and unless it is specific, odds are still against you. you tonight want to be critical of spain because they have done an excellent job over the last 12- 14 years. and should anybody known about it or the community and should spain increase intelligence in those communities. no matter how many physical bar yers, odds are in favor of the terrorist unless we have inside information and surveillance and monitoring the community and find out in advance about the attack and stop them. >> bill: thinking about 9/11 they went after our airplane and now airplane security charged. how are these attacks unfolding.

>> you look at 9/11 tis so much easier to secure an airport since everyone has to deputy through the same entrance. there is surveillance and you have the metal detention. and we have been able to secure the airports and the attacks on the streets with the vehicles. you can put up barriers and there are so many areas people are ought in the open and they are talking about christmas shopping and people coming back and forth to church. not a planned event. those are relatively easy to secure. you can have sanitation truck and secure that area. and every day congress when people walk up down the streets. it is knowing and try to learn in advance what is going to happen. >> bill: we had a reporter in times square and think about the massive amount of public spaces

here at home. would you expect changes? are we in a place where we have done as far as we can go for the moment, if you understand that part? >> i don't think we can ever say we have gone as far as we can. the nypd was out there as of yesterday, looking at what happened to barcelona and applying it to new york, and realize so many areas you cannot secure. anywhere you can secure, you will find the nypd bringing about that security. you can't do it 100 percent. but changes will be made and there will be methods adopted and adopted to try to prevent these attacks in the future. make it difficult as you can for the terrorist. >> bill: last attack on this. fake susight belt. and the fake susight vest.

why is that tactic employed. suggesting they can't get ahold of the explosives or is it a different tactics squares and frightens the people or keeps the police at bay, what is it? >> it is probably a combination of all of those. in some cases it is those. and person may not will want to die and that gives them extra measure of security. it speers to be something recent. i am not aware of that happening in the past. either they had suicide vests or not. it can't hurt them to wear it. the police are less likely to come after this and that can give them an extra second. >> the driver still alive and was apprehended and tells you about the intent and suggesting
