told she's happy. that's it for us today. chris is back next sunday. have a great week, everybody. we'll see you on the next "fox news this is a live update about the uss john mccain that was involved in a collision. ten sailors are missing. five others have been injured. it collided with english and vessel in of singapore. the ship has been identified as an oil and chemical tanker sailing under the liberian flag from africa.
8:01 pm
earlier this month it was involved in an operation in the south china sea concealed within 6 miles of an artificial island built by china. it has damage on the left rear side in trying to get back to a port for safety reasons to assess the damage. they are out there searching for ten sailors were missing. we are getting more details. lucas tomlinson has been following the story. what are you hearing from the department of navy over there at the pentagon. it collided with a cargo ship.
8:02 pm
photos are being released from the singapore military showing a massive hole in the portside in the rear of the ship. officials coming from the navy fleet, they don't think the damage is as extensive as the fitzgerald earlier. there are still ten u.s. navy sailors missing which is very concerning. a massive search and rescue operation is underway with local resources and uss america which is a large navy assault ship that will have dozens of helicopters taking part in the search operation. singapore is 11 or 12 hours ahead of us. it is daytime right now
8:03 pm
locally which will help search efforts. >> we are all hopeful that the daylight efforts will help them find those ten missing sailors. the incident itself, we understand the happened in the nighttime. when that complicate matters since you really can't tell what's going on at night on the vessel. >> that's correct. however this time is different because the collision happened around 5:30 a.m. in the morning local time in singapore. 6:30 a.m. japan time. that would be around on it would also be a time when the crew would be mustering about that time. you would have some coming on watching some coming off
8:04 pm
watch, people getting ready for work to make something you said is very important, the particular damage is not as bad as it was within the fitzgerald, but nonetheless, the uss mccain is taking on some flooding, but still moving in operating under its own power, correct? >> correct. told it will be arriving back in singapore in the next several hours according to u.s. navy officials could they still don't know exactly which ports the worship will go too. it seems like an airliner, if there's damage and needs a runway right away, they are looking how to get this worship back to a safe port as soon as possible. it's going through the water very slowly, 3 - 5 knots and looking to get to safe harbor as quickly as possible.
8:05 pm
>> lucas, i should point out you are a navy veteran. if i'm not mistaken. >> that's correct. >> tell me your expertise, as you've served on one similar to the uss mccain. >> you said something about nighttime is very different. it was like driving a car. if you're up all night where you've been on the bridge of a worship, unlike aviators that require eight hours of crew rest, there are no such requirements a board of worship. and some of the cases these young officers have worked a full day aboard the ship and then there .44 or five hour watch at night or maybe they've slept only two or three hours. this is something the navy will have to take a hard look at.
8:06 pm
we all know, if you are not fully rested when you are bored of worship for driving a car, if it's late at night, certainly performance is impacted. if you run a worship and it's nighttime, you are relying on lights. those lights are the only indication of telling you what's out there. if you are seeing a lot of light dancing around in the horizon to make for a hearing watch. >> please keep us up-to-date as we continue to follow the developments. we are going to bring someone else in right now. lucas will be standing by. for those of you just 20 yes, the uss john s mccain was sailing and iran into another
8:07 pm
vessel from liberia. it is now hobbling back to its port. joining us on the phone we have mr. brockovich. what can you tell us. >> first and foremost, our thoughts and prayers go out to the ten missing in the five injured as the ship sailing back to the port of singapore. we have ships and helicopters involved in search and rescue efforts. this is a very busy area and one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. it's incredible this has now happened a second time in the
8:08 pm
past two months. rescue efforts are underway to determine the safety of the crew and understand who needs to be rescued and who is still missin missing. >> you know a lot about this because your former special ops investigator. when they are sailing in-and-out of all sorts of waterways and this is a heavily trafficked area, are there any warning systems out there that we can acquit our vessels with so they can alert themselves and alert oncoming vessels that might be too close to them. >> there are a number of different things the navy has to do this and not what's interesting about how this was able to happen a second time in a few months. the fact is it's quite a busy area. it's one of the busiest shipping locations. right now, they do have
8:09 pm
different emergency systems that allow them to go out and notify other ships in the area. the problem is that such a busy location. what's interesting about this, it was actually equipped with the defense missile. the systems on the ship are very sophisticated. it's used to detect someone north korea's missiles and shoot down intermediate range ballistic missiles. the fact that this was hit and had a collision east of singapore, we really hope everyone is okay and the rescue mission is underway with different coalition partners. >> you mention this is the second time it's happened under the seventh fleet command, but there have been four incidents involving our u.s. navy vessel since february. as you know, they will be
8:10 pm
talking about the status in afghanistan. they're very concerned about the military. from that kind of pressure, when that kind of incident takes place, are they making sure military is funded so we can receive the best training we need to prevent situations like this? we have ten sailors missing. as you recall, the uss fitzgeral fitzgerald resulted in seven sailors dying because of that mishap. >> of course. one of the biggest things is to make sure our sailors are trained to the full extent if they're not getting the things they need appropriate funding.
8:11 pm
let's hope it wasn't something to do with training and rather a mistake on the part of the liberian merchant vessel. >> let's hope so. as we continue to watch, for those of you who are just turning in or watching us, i want to remind you that the uss john mccain has fallen into a mishap situation by colliding with the vessel that was under liberian flag. it was a merchant vessel. nevertheless it took on damage itself and is under its own power, but has incurred a little flooding, not as bad as it was during the fitzgerald situation. bret, just the nature of what's going on right now, can you tell me what's going on in the minds of that captain of the ship as well as the sailors were getting back as they are concerned about the other ten sailors missing. >> of course.
8:12 pm
for them, obviously they're looking at the safety of the crew and trying to get their sailors back and make sure everyone is safe. the good thing is, the ship is able to make it back to port. absolutely every single one of them, the main concern is the safety of their fellow soldiers and ensuring they get back safety. >> that is paramount. thank you so much. lucas, thank you as well. as i stated, we will continue to follow this developing story and bring you updates as we get them. for now, we are going to return you to "watters world" which is already in progress. jesse: a driver plowed into pedestrian on one of barcelona's busiest streets this week, and hours later in the resort town of cambrils. both incidents leaving more than a dozen dead and more than 100 injured. president trump weighing in

friday tweeting radical islamic terrorism must be stopped by whatever means necessary. the courts must give us back our protective rights. have to be tough. isis claimed responsibility for the attacks, but my next guest says they are not the only ones americans need to fear. >> the locals would snatch me up and kill me within an hour. i would be tortured first, after they were done toturing me, i would be behead. it would go upon video for everybody to see as an example. jesse: steve spent 11 years in the middle east as a marine and a private contractor. but was forced to flee iraq after that video you just saw.
8:14 pm
it's not just terrorists who hate us, you are saying the local populations hate us just as much? >> absolutely. a while back they were saying is there a difference between radical islam and islam. there isn't a difference between the two of them. it's the same ideology. so regardless of whether you have isis or you have al qaeda or the taliban, whatever the groups are, it's still the same ideology. they feel the same same regardl. they are committing the jihad. others hadn't executed the plan yet but they are still thinking about it. jesse: you are saying even peaceful muslims are jihadists waiting to happen? >> jihad is an event that is
8:15 pm
actually meant for them to do. it's the ultimate thing to commit jihad for these guys. jesse: i think some muslims might disagree. but let's talk about what happened here in spain. it seems the terrorists have left alone the country of spain for quite some type. the madrid train bombing years ago. why do you think all of a sudden spain is in the cross-hairs? >> i think it's a training ground. if you notice what's happening all over in the u.k., in e.u., and now spain and everything else. what happening is they are perfecting their tactics is what they are doing. if you in the, a vehicle is being used almost every single terrorist attack because they can't get the weapons. they are practicing and debriefing each other afterward to see what worked and what didn't work. spain just happens to be the
8:16 pm
area they did the in this time because they are branching out and looking for other areas. they are not at war with spain other e.u. they are at war with the world. >> they are using spain and all these countries in europe because of the proximity to the middle east as a practice ground to use cars or advance here in the united states? is that what you are saying? >> i believe so. this is a playbook. this is their tactics on exactly how they are going to do things. they don't have access to certain weapons and so on. so they use what's available. jesse: they are weaponizing vehicles. i don't know how you protect against that. trump said at the top we need to get tough by any means necessary? what do you think he means by that? >> i'm not sure what he means.
8:17 pm
but i would hope he means citizens pay attention to what's going on around you and if you see something out of place, you have got to say it. you can't be thinking about if you are going to be called islamophobic. if you are seeing something and not saying anything you are part of the problem. jesse: that happened in san bernardino. one of the neighbors didn't want to be accused of being anti-muslim. we have a travel ban in play. every time i see something like this in europe, it looks like another reason to institute the travel ban. >> 100%. if we don't lock down -- it's a proven fact they are using refugees to infiltrate these countries. it's proven. even if they only get one in. you have 1.8 billion muslims in

is that true? >> it's one of the things that got to me when we had a doctor watching pornography taking care of a patient and i wasn't able to fire him. it became clear we needed to have the through changed. now we have authority to fix a situation like that. jesse: you tried to fire the porn doctor who was watching it in front of a patient, and who got in your way? >> the way the law was set up, it didn't give us the authority for an offense like that to be able to move a person out. that's not acceptable. we'll be demanding a lot more our people caring for our country's veterans. jesse: we know there will and decision soon on troop leflts in afghanistan which will eventually trickle down to your department. and that's something that's going to be a lot to handle. one of the things that's very

this is a fox news alert. you are looking at a photo of the uss john mccain. it is a missile destroyer. it was involved in a collision a short time ago. ten sailors are missing, five others injured as a result of the mishap. in a very warship collided
8:30 pm
with a merchant vessel east of singapore. you are looking at the area where it likely took place. the ship it was collided with was a merchant vessel that is in oil and chemical tanker sailing under the liberian flag. earlier this month the john s mccain was involved in freedom operations in the south china sea, failing within 6 miles of an artificial island built by china. the vessel sustained damage to the left rear side. now on the phone is michael waltz, former greenbrae commander and author of warrior diplomat. thanks for joining us. while you are greenbrae and served in the army, there is always exchange and synergy between the branches of service. tell me your initial reaction to this collision that has taken place. as a result we have ten sailors missing.
8:31 pm
>> i am no navy man, but i think my reaction is probably like millions of others, does this keep happening. this is the fourth time this year within the seventh fleet. for mos most of us, it's difficult to understand how the ships, in a wide open ocean with today's radar and sensor technology, how could they collide like this. it's kind of like two cars hitting each other in the middle not for a number of my navy colleagues, i've been deployed over there, that street is a pretty hairy transit. at night in particular, or in bad weather, the radars do not
8:32 pm
necessarily work as well as they should. visibility is low. it's one of the busiest shipping channels in the world. it's incredibly tight and then you have a lot of local shipping barges that sometimes aren't even lit at night and don't abide by the standard rules of the sea. think more information will come out. this is incredibly dangerous and tight area. operationally, sure, i was just going to say that the seventh fleet is responsible for when we hear the president moving ships off the coast of north korea, like what happened several months ago, that could potentially, if we need a military option there to block cruise missiles, both
8:33 pm
his artillery and nuclear capability, that would be the fleet and also as we've mentioned before, they are also responsible for the freedom of navigation operations in the south china sea where the chinese are militarizing. it's my understanding that there's a couple dozen ships there. for this year have been damaged. i think there's a lot of questions on what this will start doing to our capability. >> as you know, the president of the united states will be discussing the afghanistan situation tomorrow night when he arrives back in washington at andrews base. his initial reaction was too ba bad, this is very bad but it's happened. we are waiting for the president to give us more details. i'm sure he will respond to
8:34 pm
this once he gets more information about what happened. we are all waiting for that to happen. here's the thing we know. that's the fact that ten sailors are missing. today, they have better vision now, there helicopters in the air, as well as singapore navy vessels and navy aircraft from singapore operating with us to help find those missing sailors. we always hoping and praying they will be found alive and brought to safety, or could it be that they could be on the ship, as we saw on the situation of the uss fitzgerald. we just don't know at this time. obviously, our prayers are that they will all be found alive. five are injured. we understand those injuries are minor. as a commander, as a leader yourself, are men operating in the battlefield that involved safety of men and women
8:35 pm
operating and wearing our uniform, it becomes paramount that training is always an issue. you always want to get your best training. we've heard some concerns from other members of the navy. i'm quoting from one u.s. navy officer, of active duty officer who said, it's not the same level of training you used to get. what does he mean by that? >> i've heard the same thing. i've heard it for some time now. there is growing frustration within the navy. they go through a whole series of processes, and i was just talking to a former classmate of mine from the virginia military institute and he was telling me that they used to take 18 months for them to get their qualifications. essentially that means until your qualified. >> let me interrupts, we are
8:36 pm
getting a tweet from donald trump tweeted just a short time ago, he is stating thoughts and prayers with our u.s. navy. search and rescue efforts are underway. we will continue to follow the development. back to your point about the training. >> essentially, what i've been hearing for some years now is that there is not nearly as great standard for some of these officers and senior navy chiefs, that operational, the amount of time that these ships are having to spend in drydock and maintenance, essentially these wars that we have underway now, and budget constraints have kind of a perfect storm in the sense that you're starting to see more and more accidents.
8:37 pm
we've seen it with multiple marine corps aircraft crashes, we just had a standdown, this is just part and parcel. i think it's important for viewers to understand that you have to take casualties in combat and were often in harm's way in training, patrolling and keeping the seas open for free trade in traffic. it's a dangerous profession. >> it is, indeed. anytime you put on a military uniform to serve the united states of america, to protect our national security and our freedom, you raise your hand to serve all of that in the means that even in training you could be exposed to some hazardous situations. for all of you joining us, this is a former green beret commander and author. we been talking about what's unfolded and that is the uss john mccain. ten sailors are missing and we
8:38 pm
also have a tweet from the mccain family. senator john mccain talking about what happened. he said cindy and i are keeping american sailors aboard the john mccain in our prayers. we appreciate the work of search and rescue crews. we appreciate the work of all the search and rescue crews, praying that they will all be found alive. ten are missing and five have received minor injuries. we will continue to follow the development and thank you for joining us. quickly, all of us are hoping our best for them. anything you want to say to those who are praying for the sailors tonight. >> whether you are a green beret overseas or a sailor on a ship, we know what were getting into. we all have a volunteer force. we know the consequences, but it's the families that suffer. we are in a long war, and my
8:39 pm
prayers go out to the families. we either come back with ptsd or we don't come back at all. the families don't get the thank you's for the service. i encourage everyone when you see a servicemember, of course thank them but take the extra moment to thank the children, the wives, mothers, their spouses who also had to step up and endure the consequences of our service for our nation. >> thank you for your service. we thank you for pointing out the fact that families are active duty as well. they serve in harm's way. thank you so much sir for giving the details in your perspective about this. we will continue to follow the development of the story and continue to keep you updated throughout the evening. world". which didn't get me to my goal.
