next day though came out taking shots at white supremacists, kkk, and neo nazis as well. ainsley: when he was talking about the media and how outraged he was with them spinning the story and taking his words out of context, he pointed to the media up there. he said all those guys basically on this platform or in the rafters and the whole crowd, this huge crowd turns around and they look at the media and they go boo! and one guy in particular was pointing. steve: cnn changt for a while. ainsley: that's right. brian: doesn't make me comfortable to be honest. i don't feel comfortable with 15,000 people turning around screaming at me. it could be, you know, could have another president or another leader pointing at you. how would you feel if had you to leave that arena then. steve: i think we have had that in the past. donald trump is a guy who when he has got an enemy, and he feels like he has been attacked, is he going to hit them back 10 times harder. we know that. ainsley: right. steve: also, one of the things he made very clear is

for chuck schumer and company not to give him that simply because it would be a victory i think goes against what's in the best interest of the american people. ainsley: you might want to know what is the status of the wall the house is has passed spending bill. that's fine we will give you that faces uncertainty in the senate. we know what happened in the senate with healthcare. whether or not they will have the votes to pass the money for the wall. brian: he did say i need in some areas it's got to be translucent or an actual way to see what's happening on the other side. ainsley: can't be tunnels built or way to climb it. brian: that's what israel did. they put a wall underneath the ground to stop the tunnels coming in from gaza. we have to do something similar. you have a bunch of engineers on the other side trying to pull drug money into our country. steve: some of the things discussed he did hint he would be pardoning sheriff joe arpaio who was convicted of contempt of court because he disregarded a federal judge's order on immigration. also, the president said regarding nafta, he hinted they might scrap it unless

they renegotiate it. and tax reform, he promised to pass it. brian brian right. i think that if he goes on these series of events and talks about tax reform and whether it's immigration reform or infrastructure, i think people have to cover it. especially when the details come out from steve mnuchin i think in a couple of weeks and mick mulvaney about specifics in the tax proposals. ainsley: if tax reform doesn't pass you have no one to thank but democrats. all these family paying taxes we all want more money in the pocketbooks so we can make decisions where it goes. brian: where to cut it where the rubber hits the road. if they want to bring democrats, in democrats have to come in and say this is what i have done and i will sign on. ainsley: they get so much money. who was it? it was rex tillerson when he took over. wasn't it rex tillerson who took over, it was before he was secretary of state. it was maybe, i'm sorry, department of labor. i think they were going to say we're going to cut your budget and he agrees. we can do this because they get so much money. and then we have heard in

where it did back on the port app. side. this is indicative they failed to maintain course and speed. operating where they were that can be a narrow channel in some points. i think we will need to figure out where was the ship? who was maneuvering, what speeds were they going? who was notified on the ship because clearly there was once again, like the uss fitzgerald, a short fall in communication on board that allowed that tanker to get that close and hit them. ainsley: what's your message to the parents of these sailors that are lost at sea or that have died as a result of this? it just seems like we were -- are we blaming washington? who is at fault and what's your message to these parents? >> well, first and foremost my thoughts and prayers are with the family and crew of john s. mccain. they are the ones that are going to live with the burdennible forever that their sailors were lost at sea. but they need to turn now and while the seventh fleet commander mayberry some responsibility having had

four collisions, we need to look back here in washington. quite frankly when it comes to training and i will give you a quick example, when i started out as a young division officer, i went to school for 16 weeks up in newport, rhode island to get trained on all the basics of how to go to sea and operate safely. nowadays they hand them a cd rom, tell them to go to their ships and go forth and do good. the training burden is out now on the ships which is more time, more maintenance and when they are undermanned that's part of the problem. we have gone from having three lookouts on the ship now to just having one. these kinds of short falls where we have cut and cut and cut over years, even beyond the obama administration is now coming home and some admiral's promotion is now being measured in the lost of lives of sailors at sea. ainsley: you mentioned four collisions, three of the four since january have been the seventh fleet and the latest two have rulted in the death of 17 sailors. we have, i think we have a graph to show you the last

four recent collisions on january 31st, may 9th there was one. june 17 at&t and august 21st. you say cuts and short falls are to blame. what's your message to the president if he is watching this morning? >> the president right now needs to mandate that the services but especially the navy come up with a strategy that can be tied to poor structures so they can go forth and say this is what we need for our navy. if they can't afford to have the neigh that we need to safeguard u.s. national security interests, then define for the american people what is the risk that we are incurring by not doing that, by not being able to operate and train safely to keep sailors alive when they are doing routine operations at sea or going forward to the tip of the spear whether it's in the straight of whstrait of hormuz n the south china sea. until we get that four structure base strategy we will continue to live in a budget-based world and it will cost lives. ainsley: i agree with you. we can't afford to lose our

what is the goal? i preached this as hard as i can i tell you unfortunately today, the men and women who are going to fight this war and get deployed it is still a mystery to them. i applaud president trump for redefining the tactics how we are going to do what we're going to do. the rules that we are going to play by or more importantly the fact that small unit leaders get to make decisions on the battlefield that save lives. but, tell me, is an 18-year-old in afghanistan putting a bomb in the ground because there is a foreign invader there the same as an 18-year-old who is willing to travel somewhere, get on the plane and fly it into a building in a foreign land? those are two different mind sets for two different purposes. the biggest place we went wrong in these last 16 years of war was starting to treat those the same. if we're in a village for one day a week, the taliban is going to thereby six days a week telling them why they should fight against us to save their own land. we are talking about these confederate statues. how many confederate soldiers were told if you don't fight they are going to come burn your house and do horrible things to your

family? well, that's what's happening in afghanistan. that's what happened in iraq. so, we need to understand the mission and we need to understand if we need a troop surge, how many ever it needs to be, what are we trying to accomplish. brian: what happened was it iraq or afghanistan? >> i went to both and i had less luck in afghanistan. i got injured in 2010 in afghanistan. i was walking in february of 2011, working on capitol hill in june of 2011. brian: if we had pulled out like we did in iraq in 2011. how would that make you feel? >> listen, i'm a product of a troop surge that i was sent with 30,000 marines and by the time i got there i was being told when i'm coming home. my entire deployment was that my entire deployment was hey, you are here with tens of thousands of marines to win this war and by the way you are coming home by june 2011. ainsley: the president said two nights ago said weaver not doing that anymore. we are not having a time line. >> absolutely. ainsley: do you support what he said two nights ago about afghanistan.

>> what he said was tactically. change what we are going to do to defeat the enemy? that makes sense. i like that. all those talking points. everything about dissemination of power down to the small unit leader. not broadcasting what we're doing. those things make sense. common sense and it's going to help the battlefield and war fighter. steve: sure. what about the fact that pakistan on monday night in virginia was talking about we have given them billions and billions and billions of dollars in aid yet, they are not helping us out. >> yeah. they have both sides of this ball for a long time. if you look at afghanistan and pakistan, there is an arbitrary line drawn down the middle of a mountain rage and now we have two countries, right? there is a certain amount of collusion, we will say, that we'll never be able -- there are thousands of passages in those mountains. we can't separate these two countries there is a pose tune region that predates islam in that area with its own culture. there is a connection there that we can't ignore. what we would have to do is force them to trade at face value. steve: they want money the choice is clear.

brian: you are not allowed to cross the border if you don't give us that money. and they try to do that before. lastly, can you tell the difference over there between the 20 terror groups that are there as opposed to the taliban that are there? >> taliban has more immediate goal, right? it's about possibly their sovereignty of that country as opposed to becoming a playground. much like iraq did for pretty much anyone in the world who wants to pick a bone and kill some americans. so in afghanistan, even with the taliban, the taliban is fractured. there is a pro-pakistan and anti-pakistan taliban. so, you know, we had the unilateral peace talks last year. didn't really get very far. the idea is that we would sit in the corner and let the taliban come to the table. that didn't work out because we didn't have a partner in pakistan to make it happen. oh, by the way, afghanistan -- it's a regional hub. it's a place everywhere from china to russia to pakistan sees as a place. brian: india. >> india, absolutely, sees as a place as long as it's in turmoil they can align

with their enemy or they are a possible play for them to take control. so, all of these, you know, multilayered things that are happening there and then are the afghan people going to be able to have sovereignty? that's the other question. one thing i will say. the commitment to we're no longer nation building. well, for one, we have never built a nation in iraq or afghanistan in 16 years. steve: right. >> honestly, what is victory? victory is for afghanistan to not be a place where our enemies can learn, train, and recruit. ainsley: yeah. >> how can that not be a place if it doesn't gain sovereignty. so i don't see how you can separate the two. and so that's the biggest challenge in front of us. ainsley: we look to you guys. thank you so much for your sacrifices and your service. we are so honored and so grateful. we get to do this great job every morning and feel safe and eat lunch at a cafe because of you. thank you for everything you are doing. >> thank you. truly honor. i had one bad dad day. the rest of them have been pretty good. ainsley: let's hand it over to jillian who has

news or crooked media. we should point out what he was talking about what he said initially in the press conference. he did not mention the part where he said people on many sides were to blame. he did not mention that, but he did try his best to explain what he has been thinking. brian: but he didn't back down. he didn't say he did anything wrong. he didn't say i wish everybody was clearer, because he had more of that tone on monday. last night i thought he was going to say, listen, on tuesday's press conference, i don't think i explained myself as accurately as i could. and instead, he read the transcript of what he did say and what he didn't say. ainsley: after charlottesville, he said i had three press conferences to talk about it, and he held up a piece of paper and said let me read you what i said and let me read you how the mainstream media portrayed what i said. so he had proof of what he said. and then he told the crowd. see the cameras that are behind you? and the whole crowd turned around. and he said many of the cameras are mainstream media. and that's when he said those

red lights are going off because they don't want to tell the story accurately and the whole crowd turned to those cameramen and booed. brian: he was almost fighting against his advisers when he said i'm not going to mention john mccain by name, or jeff flake, but he knows who the republican sitting senators are, and he knows that we're not on the same page with them and aren't on many things. even though jeff flake voted with him when it comes to repeal and replace obamacare. john mccain didn't. here's the president last night kind of holding back. >> obamacare is a disaster and think. we were just one vote away from victory after seven years of everybody proclaiming repeel and replace. one vote away. one vote away. we were one vote away. think of it.

seven years. the republicans. again, you have great senators. but we one vote away from repeal. and noticeable wants me to talk about your other senator who's weak on borders, weak on crime, so i won't talk about him. nobody wants me to talk about him. nobody knows who the hell he is. and now -- see? i haven't mentioned any names. so now everybody's happy. steve: even though he didn't mention the names, he knew exactly who he was talking about. john mccain and jeff flake who clearly is -- look, john mccain voted "no" and torpedoed obamacare. then you have jeff flake who has come out with a book -- keep in mind, he's a republican senator, and he has written a book highly critical of the republican president of the united states. you just don't normally do that. brian: but i will say this. jeff flake is going to be on radio in a couple of hours, and i do say this.

they agree on much more than they disagree with. he does not like the populism he ran on. he does not want to build a border wall. he doesn't think that will help. ainsley: well, neither one of them were in atten attendance in their own state last night and he said quote i will never stop -- and that's interesting because remember at one point he said i'm going to move on? he said, no, we're going to get it done. call your two senators. brian: it would be r it would be very interesting to see if they get over the anger they have with mitch mcconnell. my sense it will be like the 1978 yankees. they'll brawl in the clubhouse but win on the field. they'll never like each other but they'll learn to work for each other because they have nowhere else to go. steve: well, i think you're right the president hopes they win on the field because they never lost under the leadership of mitch mcconnell. they just need one more person. somebody who's going to challenge in the primary jeff

flake in the great state of arizona is the treasurer. he's going to join us. we're going to talk to him about the festivities in about five minutes. brian: espn has the contract for the university of virginia football but they have a problem. the play-by-play guy. ainsley: that guy. robert e lee. they're saying he shouldn't be the announcer that he's assigned to. steve: but this guy's not robert e lee. unless the e stands for espn. it's just crazy. there are so many people on the twitter verse who have blown up on espn. you have got to be kidding. all people have to do is do the math. are we really that sensitive? but espn put out a statement, and they made it very clear they were just trying to err on the side of caution. ainsley: we collectively made the decision with robert to switch games as the tragic

at yesterday's rally. joins us right now from phoenix. good morning to you. >> good morning, steve. thank you for having me. steve: someone suggested that you should challenge jeff flake when he runs for reelection. you are interested, though, even though you haven't decided whether or not you're interested in senate, in helping president trump; right? >> absolutely. you know, i've been there from the very, very beginning with the president. i've ridden in with him many times when he comes to arizona, as well as other states. i was there at the very, very first rally back in july of 2015, and that was the first time i think everyone saw there was magic in the air, and i've never doubted since that time that he was going to win. and we knew right back then that he was going to win. steve: you fly in on air force one, would you be comfortable sharing any of the conversation with the president? >> well, i don't want to say the specifics of what we talked about, but i want to say first, what an amazing opportunity to ride on air force one.

obviously, that's a much better way to travel than the commercial airlines. steve: no kidding. >> and more leg room. i'm 6'5". there's more leg room. steve: air force one. that's why you should be president, somebody should say. because you get more leg room on air force one. well, the president did not mention mr. flake and mccain by name. clearly, he was taking shots at him because they have not been helpful to him, even though they're republican. >> well, you know, a lot of people all over the country in the senate have -- on the republican side have raised money for seven years saying they're going to repeal obamacare, and i think a lot of people are very disappointed that obamacare is not gone. obviously, the president has done everything he can to make that happen, and it's time for the senate to put the bill on his desk and fix what has really broken our small business sector, getting rid of obamacare will help bring more jobs, and that's the important thing. steve: jeff, what do you think is the president's criticism where he blamed the media for the backlash after charlottesville? >> oh, i think he's right on

the money. he came out very, very strongly and condemned all forms of racism the day that it came out. and then the media would never give him credit for that. so, you know, i think it's sad what they put him through with these things. he did the right thing and said, oh, he wasn't specific enough. never mind the double standard that obama was never specific, and they never said that about him. but they said, oh, president trump wasn't specific, so then two days later, he comes out with another statement that's very specific, and they act like that's the first statement. so, you know, the media is treating president trump very unfairly. but the one thing he has that i think drives the media crazy is he has the ability to go directly to america more so than any president in history. he can get his message across, and that's why he's supported so strongly, especially here in arizona. steve: he's a little bit it with twitter and also the big rallies. jeff, thank you very much for joining us live today. >> great. thanks for having me on. steve: okay. you bet. all right. coming up on this

and clapper is a poster child for that methodology, and this is what they're telegraphing. they're putting him out there to see how well this resonates with the cnn audience. brian: because he's the national intelligence director for eight years. if he says that, it must be true. >> that's right. brian: and, by the way, he knows a lot of secrets and knows a lot about that transition of what president trump and president obama talked about. and if you're wondering how a lot of these things are getting in the papers, could one conclude perhaps somebody who thinks the president's unstable that wants to quit the job literally, key possibly be the source there? you're an intelligence officer. >> yeah. no, look, i know for a fact and, and i've turned the name over his deputies is one of the leakers. that information was turned over to the appropriate authorities and, yes, he directed it for my information. we'll see what happens regarding the investigation. but that was action. with that said, he personally, brian, has lied twice under oath to the american people. so how does anybody consider this man credible at this point in time? and, yes, he was part of the

effort with ben rhodes, john brennon and the others to go about the could to be unmask people as well as to say things like this to undermine the smooth transition. so, again, i don't understand how anybody gives jim clapper any credibility at this point in time. brian: if they were saying this about president clinton or president obama, what do you think the backlash would be that he somehow unhinged and wants to quit the job? i've never heard that in my life. a president looking for a way out like mike tyson? >> he would be completely isolated. i suspect he would be getting death threats, i suspect that everybody on the left would be piling on. he would have people protesting in his driveway wherever he lives. so, brian, this is a complete double standard here and, again, i see this as kind of a trial balloon to see how well this narrative plays because, look, russia didn't work, i don't think this whole trump

premise is working, and i think this is their next tact. brian: charlottesville, london's afghanistan speech. you were in afghanistan before. we still haven't taken them out. what i'm wondering is in this plan, what's missing to make colonel shafer to believe, if anything, that would be successful? >> well, two things, brian. i think first, we have to consider the nuclear issues in pakistan. i think as you mentioned, operation dark heart, my book was a plan. so i like the fact that president trump said back on the offensive. let's go back and do this. let's quit focusing on trying to create a nation, a nation state that's a jefferson democracy. but we now have to consider is the issues of the region. he played the india card and, brian, he didn't only play the india card against pakistan, which is their primary competitor, he played against china. india is becoming a competitor

fighting for each and every day. it's so important. ainsley: why don't people like that? the independents and democrats, that sounds like a normal message. >> it sounded like a campaign rally, frankly. and what people said while republicans his base definitely loved it, a minus, you could see the independents and democrats gave it a low mark because they say this isn't about you right now. america is wounded. we are hurting. we are divided, and we want to see us coming together. don't make this about you. don't make this about attacking, explaining, defending. make this about what you're going to do for the american people to bring us back together. brian: you got the job, in other words. >> exactly. brian: something else he talked about was america coming together, and he did it by saying we all have the same goals, we all have the same aspirations. trump: americans share one flag, one home, and one glorious destiny.

we love according to the same law, raise our children by the same values, and we are all made made by the same almighty god. ainsley: i love that. >> you can see that this is a beautiful, poignant message. republicans gave it a a, independents and democrats gave it a c. now, democrats often give trump everything he says an f, so that was a good message for the democrats. i think what was most interesting, though, is independents are softening on their support to trump. they're falling more in line with democrats, and they're quite frankly questioning right now what's going to get done, people are concerned, and they want to see him lead more. so really tough night. steve: well, something the president did is let the press have it. beat the press i think was the headline in the new york times. here he is in part where he has been blaming the media for the backlash after virginia. watch this. trump: it's time to expose the

crooked media deceptions and to challenge the media for their role in fermenting divisions and, yes, by the way, they are trying to take away our history and our heritage. you see that. >> so you can see the republicans love this. they gave it an a. independents and democrats gave it a d. and i think what's most important there is look at the independent line and see they have fallen their support for the president right now and what they said is they're tired of the blame game. we get that the mainstream media is not being kind to the president, but that's not what we want to focus on right now. focus on bringing us back together, unifying this nation, and getting things done. we want to see tax reform, we want to see health care, we want to hear about what you're going to do, not putting down the media and not putting down the establishment anymore. just get something done. steve: would it be safe to say with the three sound bytes that you played with the dials, it looked like his core
