>> gianno: wow! i'm very ready and i'm glad to be on the air with you all. i've been on the air with everyone and i've interviewed you for extra tv. >> harris: let's do the newest. president trump of the words for his base last night. in phoenix, he spent nearly 30 minutes defending his response to charlottesville racist, violence and hate. while bashing the mainstream media and the process. watch. >> what happened in charlottesville strikes at the core of america. i spoke out forcefully against hatred, bigotry and violence and strongly condemned the neo nazis, the white supremacists, and the kkk. i openly called for unity, healing, and love. they all know because they were there. what do they say? it should have been sooner, he's a racist. it should have been sooner, oka okay. i hit them with everything.

i got the white supremacists, the neo-nazis, the kkk. i got them all. they're having a hard time. it's time to expose the crooked media perception and to challenge the media for their role and fermenting division. >> harris: trumps critics say he mischaracterized the comments about charlottesville and one even called the speech disturbing. why did this last night? >> gianno: it's a lot to unpack what happened last night. for anyone who doesn't know, i've been a defender of the president where i believed appropriate since the primary general election and of course come up until last week. president trump, we know he's a free wheeling guy, but at this time, the president has to be held accountable and i think for my fellow republicans, it's time to really hold him to account because what he did last night

in terms of inserting charlottesville was not okay. i don't think it was the appropriate environment. obviously he had a very tough week last week and arguably one of the worst weeks in his presidency, but the crowd was a jovial crowd. race is a very sensitive issue and there were a lot of people impacted by his comments last week. obviously it was very much impacted by it, but this was not the right tone, tenor, or environment for this conversation. >> harris: i see so many nodding heads, i'm sitting with you, mercedes. >> mercedes: there is moments in a presidency where you have to step back, where you have to take a pause, where you need to reevaluate and say, how can i heal this nation? you bring parties together, you bring diverse religious leaders, you bring civil rights back, you have these conversations in a serious way. this is a rally setting, this is a discussion that we've seen a

tragedy happen in america and so part of the healing process is bringing these parties together in the white house to have these discussions. listening, reaching out, that's more effective. when he talked about afghanistan this week, he went directly to the military officers, basically had a very serious tone. i think the campaign rally is simply not enough to deal with the sensitivity of this topic and helping to deal with improving. >> harris: i bring it up because some who support the president would make the argument that the first family and civil rights, the king family, standing right by the president's side. dagan, your thoughts? >> dagen: part of the issues where the president's tone. he talked about unity, healing, and love, but it was about him defending himself against people who took issue with his repeated responses to the violence in charlottesville. i must admit that my whole

family lives in and around charlottesville, this is where i grew up, so we were very disturbed from night one to see neo-nazis, klansmen, white supremacists marching with torches. when we didn't hear an initial response of i condemn these people by name, that was bothersome. it's deeply frustrating and upsetting, but i will hold this president to the same standard that i feel like i set for president obama. time and again, for 8 years, i criticized the president for surrounding himself with people who adored him and bathing in the adulation and the applause of these campaign style rallies and also, never calling our enemies by their names, never calling out radical islamic terrorists.

he's spoken to more people and call our enemies by name. >> harris: we knew that would be how the audience would be stacked, that's what it is. one of the things we had talked about with the speech and i wonder if it happened this way. did the president effectively step on the success he had the night before or was it a continuation? >> sandra: i would challenge all the responses that we've had on the couch so far, is this response that i'm hearing on the couch in line with the way his base is responding today and last night? you took to twitter to ask my question. you have a lot of supporters following you, what was the reaction that you heard from people that you are in touch with every day? they are he is a fighter. the base feels like he's standing up there fighting for them or did you hear otherwise

last night? >> gianno: i posted that on my facebook and twitter and i got mixed responses. i got a lot of folks supporting president trump, i've got folks who support some of my rhetoric, if you will. they understand that i'm coming from a very different place than most others who talk about this issue. i've heard he's a fighter, that was a bad speech, it was horrible. i've heard all kinds of things. my take on it is president trump must understand that these issues aren't to be discussed in these kinds of environments. i know people have said we don't need to have a conversation on race in america. we need to understand each other and that dynamic isn't being played out much. >> harris: i think it's important, the president had some important things to say about the nation's longest war on monday night and we've been focused on that and he wouldn't want to step on that message,

you would want to probably continue the conversation. how do you think those two messages, monday and tuesday night flowed together, mercedes? >> mercedes: i think the president did a very effective job in his afghanistan speech, and terms of the tone and the message itself. listening to his military, taking a stance. this other setting was more to rally the base, to let them know that he is a fighter and so when you go into the red meat of the speech, the border issue, you going to tax reform and basically going after the republican establishment, it is very effective for the base and the base agrees with him. they want him to go into washington and make things happen. >> dagen: maybe he gave that speech last night because he rescinded on promises he made on the campaign trail with regards to afghanistan. last night, he's still campaigning for a job that he

already got. i know his supporters because they've called me all sorts of names all morning long, some you can see on tv, some you can't, but i think what is important are people who are supporters of his who voted for president trump, like this guy we spoke to this morning, bob fleischer, he is from toledo, ohio, he is a small business owner. he said that president trump doesn't want to lose people like me who helped him get elected. he wasn't happy with the speech last night. >> mercedes: he also said i want him to succeed. i want him to lead. there is a sense that there is still at home, they want to give the president the benefit of the doubt. >> sandra: a way to please the bob fleischer's of the world, tax reform. he still has that and his toolbelt. it's not like bob fleischer is

flake. he's been very critical of the president. often times, the book that just came out, but he's one of the least popular senators in the country. one of the things in the president's favor is he's voted 90% of the time in regards to the president's agenda, so he can appreciate that. this has become very difficult for the president. going forward when congress does come back in session, there are people who say because of the charlottesville situation that there is a dark cloud on his agenda moving forward. i've talked to people on the hill, whether they be chief of staff's or members who also agree with that. i think president trump needs to talk about unity, not just in the country, but within the republican party because there's things we actually need to get done. at this point, we don't have a real agenda to sell. hold on, i'm talking and terms of accomplishing it.

come to the compromise. you had mike lee, ted cruz, even rand paul who was so critical of that senate bill support the skinny bill and then you have these other republicans who decided not voting. >> gianno: he blamed only john mccain. >> dagen: one quick thing, president trump and mitch mcconnell need to work together because if nancy pelosi and those democrats take over the house, it's going to be an impeachment hearing. >> sandra: president trump saying he'll do whatever it takes to get funding for that border wall including shutting down the government. a good tactic to help deliver on one of his biggest campaign promises or could it backfire? plus espn facing backlash for pulling a broadcaster because he happens to have the same name as confederate general robert e le lee. is this something else?

don't do what i'm asking you, then this is what it's going to be. i appreciate that. i think it's consistent with his campaign message and it's part of the reason with which he won. that's appropriate and my view. >> harris: is this a deal breaker? >> mercedes: it's an incredibly critical part of the president's agenda is to build a wall. from a national security perspective as well as the fact that this is something dealing with the rule of law. this is the fact that the because the president has been so right and so outspoken on illegal immigration, what have we seen question rick we've seen deportations decreased tremendously and we have to get a hold of that illegal immigration's problem in americ america. they're using words like immoral to build the wall, what they're promoting is illegal immigration. they are promoting the law.

>> harris: the president has talked about that wall would be a structure and so what we see along the southern border, it is a fence line more than a wall, but it is a structure fortified by border agents. >> dagen: this goes back to our previous discussion about senate republicans and is get on board with this. the houses passed legislation for $1.6 billion, but it's not clear that that negotiations, how that language will survive. again, it falls on the ability to work in the senate and with members of his party to get this done. would they show the government down over this issue, it's very personal to this president and to his supporters, but with a government shutdown over this? no way. >> sandra: does the president need to get more specific with his plan for building this wall?
