that could mean this could be the first test of a hydrogen bomb. a thermonuclear bomb that is even more evident than the atomic devices they have been testing so far. again what we are seeing from the u.s.g.s. and backed up some degree by south korean military, a detonation device happened at noon north korea time and it happened around the same location where they tested five other nuclear devices. a couple important thing thingsr our viewers to remember. the state media agency for north korea was quoting kim jong-un saying a hydrogen device, a more deadly device even than an

atomic device. a hydrogen bomb had been developed by north korea. it showed an image of kim jong-un at the very least with a mock-up of what was described as a hydrogen bomb. the timing of this announcement. the timing of this report in conjunction with the apparent detonation of this device could be no coincidence. all of this in the back drop of what else north korea has been doing. we were there most of recently in april of this year and saw the rollout of a new missile which was claimed at the time to be an icbm. that is missile capable of reaching the united states mainland from north korea. then in may we saw one test, in july we saw another test and one

test recently capable we believe of hitting the united states. this comes on the heels of kim jong-un's comment. we could have another nuclear event, robert. robert: in essence it seems fit is indeed a hydrogen bomb as you are talking about, this could be them trying to back up the photos they showed with the display of kim jong-un watching them being loaded on to the icbm. how long do you think it will be before we know the determination

determination. >> we are hearing from japanese prime minister abe saying this is unacceptable. if there is confirmation they have gone a further stage in their nuclear testing. i would assume and it's what we have been hearing from the white house, even prompt a stronger response. but the there have been strong sanctions and strong political and economic moves being made by the youth as well as a lot of saber rattling on the military side. again to put this in context, we saw two tests last year in 2016, and the largest one was 5.2, 5.2 would in the range of 10-

10-15millitons, the size of a hiroshima-style u.s. atomic bomb. certainly according to the security experts that would be more than enough to concern people in the united states. if you get in the range of 6.3, then you are talking yes again in the range of a much larger bomb. other thing to put into context and what we have to remind our viewers of, most of expert do not believe even if they have done a test of this scale, even if they have a side bomb or nuclear device of this size, they have not really believe that the testing and technical development to put it on top of an icbm that would reach the youth, but all the latest indications show they are getting closer and closer to that as they have in parallel

developing these missiles. according to the people i talked to, they are at least up into the 20-30 range. and it could be higher than that, robert. robert: in talking to these sources, we heard some folks here on the phone with us during our covering this evening, it could be a year away from completing this. what is the timetable you are hearing? about a year? there are a lot of variables at play here. i'm curious how close they are to harnessing the technology from the expert you are speaking with. >> timetables are hard to figure out and hard to commit to. my best experts and we have some good ones following this, were completely surprised by the very speedily development north korea made of the intercontinental

ballistic missiles. they figures pyongyang was a couple years out developing a missile even remotely in the range of hitting mainland united states. but we saw in july, regarding the development of the weapons, they were saying it would take another 3 years or so before you could have a bomb that you could describe as a hydrogen bomb. again, we have no confirmation that it is of that size today. i must underscore that. but if the seismic recording of the debt nation is correct, you are within that range. china thwarted a second seismic

experience smaller following the first it's the first time i can remember a double event happening and that could be an indication of the larger side. the brother political question is the real point right now, is this yet another red line that north korea could be crossing in terms of washington's response to the activity of north korea. the missiles are alarming and nuclear bombs are the thing that puts the two elements together and presents a real threat to the united states. my guess is at this early our overnight in the united states, late in the day in north korea, and in the region, japan and north korea that there has got to be a strong response from the neighbors of north korea and from washington, robert.

has been a little swayed by either the much stronger efforts by the u.s. security council and stronger sanctions on north korea. also not been swayed by the muscular efforts by the united states to rattle some sabres. the latest we just saw in the past few days, another fly by by our strategic bombers accompanied by south korean and japanese jets flying from guam. so there hasn't been too much movement from pyongyang from my experience in the capital of north korea. speaking to people who are close to the leadership there, speaking to officials. they need just as a short time ago in april told me face to face flatly they would never, i repeat never give up the nuclear

program. they would never give up their missile program. they see it as a combination of national pride. they see it as also an element of survival. that they feel if they have the weaponry there, the nuclear weaponry there they stand less of a chance of being threatened by the united states. so far i haven't seen too much budging by north korea. one of my experts said it looked like china was having an effect in tempering the attitude of pyongyang because we hadn't seen another nuclear test. by all indications according to this information, today we have, robert. robert: it does appear that way. we are waiting for confirmation from north korea. gregg palkot we would like to thank you for your insight with
