4:00 pm
fox news alert florida now feeling the effects of hurricane irma. it's whipping miami in the keys. it's a category three storm approaching mainland. hurricane warnings in effect for millions of people across the state. i'm julie bandanna and this is the fox report >> good evening to you and good evening to everyone watching across the country. i'm bill hammer live along the river walk where we have seen extraordinary measures of patients playing out in the faces of so many hundreds of people we've encountered over
4:01 pm
the past 24 hours. there is a mandatory evacuation that went into effect yesterday. most people heeded the warning. these gentlemen have not. everything's okay. we will take care of that. that evacuation order came for reason because the storm is changing. with that we have fox coverage out in key largo where the brunt of irma is coming on short. we begin with meteorologist janice. take us through what the storm is doing now. what you have >> it still a category three hurricane. i want to point your attention to this very well-defined i credit just popped off the northern coast of cuba after being onshore and being disrupted by land. the storm needs the fuel of the warm water to strengthen and we think that's what's going to happen in the next
4:02 pm
12 - 18 hours. about a hundred miles ahead and we've got 90-degree temperatures in the florida straight. there is no reason why we are not going to have a strengthening hurricane, perhaps even strengthening as it makes landfall. it's deftly on the horizon for the storm probably within the next apm advisory. i want to mention the tornado watch affect. the storm is particularly dangerous. with these landfall systems we have tornadoes spread their typically weak but we can see sexual damage. millions of folks are in the tornado watch. sunday morning, here is the timeline we think around 7:00 a.m. it will make its first landfall on key west and then making a second landfall
4:03 pm
around the dinner team hour for the naples, fort myers area. remember we been telling you all day, the worst side of the storm is the right side of the storm and unfortunately this whole west coast of florida will feel the potential of catastrophic storm surge. the only way i can put it. if you are in low-lying areas, you could be overtopped with incredible amounts of water as it just continues to be ushered in from those counterclockwise wins. toward the florida panhandle in georgia could see the potential of a hurricane on monday. here's the track. the new advisory at eight. category three right now but strengthening as it makes landfall over the key west and close to fort myers tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow evening. then into tampa bay, again with the potential storm surge of upwards of 15 feet, and again that could cause catastrophic life-threatening damage and that's why people are being sold get out while
4:04 pm
you get out while you can. your preparations need to be completed. the hurricane force wind got tomorrow morning for the keys was. were talking about 6:00 p.m. on sunday. these are hurricane force winds. by the way, tropicals force winds into georgia tomorrow afternoon. we haven't even talked about rainfall. the storm surge, you will hear us talk about this through the duration of the storm because this area is so vulnerable. were talking eights 12-foot storm surge in all of these areas underwater. that goes for the everglades, ten to 15-foot storm surge. the heavily populated area of
4:05 pm
the tampa bay area in st. petersburg. this could be catastrophic for them. that's why the storm is so important to monitor. listen to your local officials. if they tell you to get out, you have to. it's a matter of life or death. back to you >> many people are listening to the warnings that you have put out in the governor put out. so many have heeded the warnings and left. not everybody. a few people will write about. in the meantime, back to new york >> we apologize. obviously we can't control the crowd that did not evacuate. hurricane irma is expected to hammer the florida keys, an area that could see storm surge between 10 - 12 feet. that is life threatening. adam is live from key largo with the latest. where you are, certainly that is starting to see the outer bands. we been getting rain and wind already >> we really been getting hammered this morning when the
4:06 pm
power went out. it was just wind at that point. it has been relentless. i would say we have 30 - 40 consistent gusty winds. are you. a couple of the docs are underwater. there's votes behind me smashing into a cement dock. there are several sailboats out here. we are on the ocean side of key largo that have broken loose. the keep coming over this way. i know at least three have smashed into the rock jetty where we are located. to my left you can see there's one there right now that is just drifting. it's already smashed into one of the other ones. it's been taking on water for a while. it's tilting at almost a 45-degree angle.
4:07 pm
we are just at the beginning of this. we have a number of hours to deal with here and everyone in the keys is worried about the dirty side of the storm which is the right side if you're looking at that hurricane map. that's the side that will eventually go in to jupiter. were feeling it right now. it sure will get ugly over the next 12 hours or so. i know there's not a lot of people in the keys. this time people did take the warning for the most part. they are happy with the number of people that did evacuate. even with that we've seen people out taking photos, one or two here and there. of all the hurricanes i've been to, this is the fewest number of people i've seen, during a hurricane. that's good news. especially as the water comes up to the edge of the area where i'm standing were expected to have five or six people were -- five or 6 feet where i am standing >> they are still holding on.
4:08 pm
those votes will rip free. that causes a whole another level of damage with rising water. have you talk to any vote owners that decided to leave their votes there? they're not to be there when they get back >> we been here for a couple days. some got their votes out. others were lucky enough to find someone to get it out of the water. there's some canals here. there just isn't enough space or time, even with the warning to get all these votes out of the water. if you look over here, the problem i have is the break loose. once that water comes over the land, those votes will come on the land. we've seen other votes and tsunamis. the votes will follow suit. the worry is all these votes
4:09 pm
coming in. were hoping the storm surge predictions are not there. we fear the storm surge predictions are cracked in the, sure. that blue one out there is out of sight. if you were to stay another 20 minutes you'll see it smashed into the coast >> wow. incredible. thank you so much. live from key largo. joining me now is bill >> thank you. back here with the mayor, you've had your work cut out for you. how do you think it's going >> i think it's going well. we've trained for this. even though we had been hit in over 90 years, this is something we prepare for. as part of being a floridian and part of living on the water. were ready. it's time to execute.
4:10 pm
people are counting on us. >> when people watch the radar, there's a certain anxiety that we all feel pretty sure you feel the same way. when you look at that now, do you feel good about your chances? do you feel less good, or are you really up in the air, not knowing >> i'm up in the air. we watch this wobble back and forth the entire week. that's outside my control. all i can do is execute on the plan we have in place. i will tell you the state and governor scott have been tremendous in terms of helping local jurisdictions from the federal level and local level, everyone is on the same page. we know what our plan is and now it's up to us because there are hundreds of thousands of people counting on us to go execute that plan and be there when they need us. >> and a lot of people have left and some people have chosen to stay. i don't know what you're feeling is about that, but everyone is here to make up their own mind.
4:11 pm
it's pretty nice night here. it's a little breezy. the clouds are passing and leaving again, but other than that you would not know that monster lurks to the south >> you wouldn't and you would not know that right over there where i live may not exist and my house may not exist in today's depending on where the storm goes. i can't worry about that. fortunately most people did what we asked them to do which was evacuate. the others that are hunkered down, i hope they're taking precautions. if it's blowing a consistent 40 miles per hour, i can't send the cops and the firefighters and come get you. people need to make the right choices because they can't call us on 911 if the windsor bolt blowing that strong. i cannot put our guys at risk like that. i think people have done the right thing but we will certainly find out about 24 hours >> thank you >> good luck to you >> i really appreciate you coming out. i know you been working 247
4:12 pm
>> let's get back to julia new york >> back to a moment. bill is talking to a lot of different officials were trying to cover pretty much every angle of the story. if there's something of concern for anyone watching from florida, if you have any questions, go ahead and send it to us and will try to get to those officials on the ground and get some your questions answered if we can. some your questions on twitter. i'll try to get them answered. rick scott is trying to answer as many questions as possible and he has a dire warning for residents to get out. it out now before hurricane emma arrives. some people are ignoring that advice. we will talk to one man who says he is not going anywhere. >> we are in shelters all around the county they have to get out. this is a tough state. we been through these things before. this is way bigger than andrew. we could see all the bacteria that still exists. polident's unique micro clean formula

julie, one other thing, earlier today around 4:00 p.m. in the afternoon there were 67 counties in georgia. 58 of the 67 were under a hurricane warning. i don't know if that has ever happened in the history of this state or any state for that matter. 58 of 67 is a continued threat. back here in a moment. back to new york >> thank you. miami is far from safe. we are to live on the ground with continuing coverage from hurricane irma >> any small shift back to the east has major implications for miami. were talking about a wide area, 20 - 30 miles and any shift could have dire effect on communities

evacuation order. naples is about two hours west of miami on the western coast of florida. naples is an area where a lot of people didn't think they would be bearing the brunt of the storm and boy did the storm prove them wrong >> exactly right. a lot of people were actually treated from miami to naples. instead they are winding up in the heart of the storm. the city of 20000 is now getting the first taste of this rain and wind that could hammer naples expected for the next 24 hours. the city is a virtual ghost town, just journalist looking down the street waiting for a possible impending disaster. we see people boarding up the stores along fifth avenue throughout the day, even talking with a third-generation floridian, he said even he is frightened about what's to come. >> have been here since 1958. never seen one this big or

i'm julie and this is the fox report. bill hemmer will join me in just a moment. he is sharing this to our special for us and talking about hurricane irma as the category three storm approaches florida. it's on track to make landfall early tomorrow morning and it could strengthen before then. hurricane warnings are in effect for millions of people all up and down the state of florida. 6million people order to evacuate. that is the very most due to
4:32 pm
natural disaster in american history. they're taking this warning seriously, boarding up their home and businesses before getting out. schools across the state closed earlier this week to help evacuees. in all 75000 people are ready to ride out the storm in government-sponsored shelters. this has been a very confusing storm to track. i want to read one of the questions from one of my followers. she writes why does the hurricane keep moving between cap three and cap five. what's the significance of the eye and its size >> we are at cap three, almost to cap four. during its lifetime it was a five. at this point in time it doesn't matter about the category. the storm surge is going to remain the same if it's a high cap three or cap four, and we
4:33 pm
are expecting it to strengthen in the next couple of hours to a category four. okay, don't pay attention to the category is what i'm trying to say because either way we are still dealing with an incredible amount of storm surge in a very vulnerable area. in terms of the eye, this is a good indication of how strong the storm is getting. we have a well-defined eye and that's the significance of a storm that could be strengthening. pin sometimes we see a wide i and other times a smaller eye. it doesn't really make a difference when it comes to the strength of the hurricane, whether it's a big eye or a small eye. we are seeing that well-defined eye and that is an indication that we are seeing a strengthening storm. they go through structural changes and sometimes you see
4:34 pm
fluctuations. the goes over a landmass it will weaken a little bit because of lost the source of the warm water. it goes through an eye wall replacement cycle which is what it's going to right now, it's the hurricanes way of strengthening again. it's breaking down a little bit and getting stronger. that's another indication of the fluctuation. the bottom line is we will see one of the strongest hurricanes they have ever seen in florida state history. it is going to bring the potential for catastrophic storm surge. already seeing wind gusts in excess of 62 miles per hour in key west. we have hurricane warnings now, more hurricane warnings north of florida into georgia. 18million people right now under a hurricane warning. we also have hurricane watch that extends up toward georgia and the south carolina coastline as well. 18million people under hurricane warning. that is pretty major. tornado threat also with the landfall in tropical systems we have tropical tornadoes and rotation with this and the threat, we have several storms
4:35 pm
in and around the miami area and around the fort lauderdale area, and that could be dangerous. some of these tornadoes could be rain wrapped in you won't see you then. another added threat with this hurricane. the watches will continue throughout the duration of the storm as it moves northwards. sunday, expect landfall across key west around 7:00 a.m. our second landfall we are predicting around the naples fort myers area around 5:00 p.m. and again, the worst part of the storm is the right-hand side. all of that water, that wall of water from the counterclockwise wind will be shoved in the very vulnerable low-lying area including tampa bay which we are very concerned about. we have not seen a hurricane of this magnitude in probably a century. we could be dealing with a hurricane from georgia. there's the track, new advisory coming out at 8:00 o'clock. if i get any update you will hear it here. i do believe we will see a
4:36 pm
strengthening storm. the pressure of the storm is certainly very low which indicates a strengthening storm. back to >> thank you so much and thanks to our viewers who have been asking questions. keep them coming. ask away. we will try to get your questions covered >> you just never know what these storms will do when they interact with land. we hold our breath and cross our fingers. 7000 active guard troops have been activated. there are 30,000 outside of florida on standby to help when they are called. with me now is the attorney general in the state of florida. you've lived here all your life. i imagine there's a little bit of anxiety >> i've lived through many hurricanes. this is by far the worst we have ever seen. i'm glad the people are listening. they've sold 30,000 pieces of plywood for people and you are
