abby: president trump back on the stump last night but so much going on with healthcare and the graham-cassidy bill. pete: luther strange and roy moore to repace jeff sessions. is he down there stumping for luther strange. news broke in the middle of the day yesterday that a big vote that republicans were hoping would be a yes vote on the graham bill that you talked about to repeal and replace obamacare instead went in the other direction. of course, president trump took to the podium to have a few words about senator mccain's statement that he will not be voting for the graham-cassidy bill. take a listen. >> now, john mccain. want regular order swamp speak for i want this to go on forever. i want democrats to take control of the process and i want it to become convoluted i'm frustrated because i have had so much respect for john mccain over the years. he was once a maverick now he is just a democrat. how many times is he going to vote against the agenda he said he was going to do. it's frustrating to watch. abby: i will push back on that a little bit. what he did say what i don't like about it is it is down party lines which is what republicans were criticizing the democrats for when president obama shoved obamacare down people's throats. they didn't ask for any opinions from the other side of the aisle or anyone from outside of capitol hill, which, you know, i think that does make some sense you want as many voices at the table as possible. at the same time though i mean. pete: they had seven years, abby. tons of outside think tanks on the republican side put input on this and still can't coalesce. griff: jimmy kimmel is praising john mccain with the tweet saying at senator

john mccain hero again and again and now again. as i senator elect kimmel didn't make legislation but who am i to say. abby: chuck schumer has been helping jimmy kimmel because he gave his rant the other night. he has his own personal story what he has been through with his own baby with heart problems. i totally understanding that everyone has their right to tell their story on television if they have that opportunity. they went to chuck schumer to get some talking points but didn't go to the other side. he didn't talk to cassidy or to graham to say at least help me understanding where you are coming from. what's in your bill so i can properly explain this to the american people. pete: for months his staff has been talking to chuck schumer reported by the daily beast that they have been in conversations about this healthcare bill. think about this. for months, a network evening show has been talking to one side of the aisle to get their talking points on a bill. if you want confirmation that the so-called mainstream media is actually the opposition party in bed with the democrats, there you have it.

how much talk has his staff had with senator graham or cassidy or the majority leader? probably none, maybe some. let us know. jimmy kimmel let us know you have talked to both sides. the report something we are going to get the talking points from chuck and nancy and fight this bill through the media. no surprise that those of us who feel like the deck is stacked against real reform in washington. abby: have you seen this play out before and it's not looking very good. this might be their final chance to do healthcare. then they move on to tax reform. midterms are around the corner. fowfer tough for them to get something done. griff grifer they have a deadline september 30th. go back to 60 votes. pete: what's your overunder 50% chance that it happens? griff: i would absolutely put my money on the fact this goes down like skinny repeal goes down. i don't think there is enough there in this even though they move block grants back to the state to give more power back to the states. you would have thought lindsey graham would have talked to his best friend john mccain before this. i don't think it's going to happen if i had to guess.

that, of course, is going to be the end of any effort to repeal and replace. and then they are now going to be forced to negotiate with democrats. and that piece of legislation is going to have to attract upwards of 10 democrats. it's not going to look like this one. pete: 10 union corns. 10 democrats that work with the president. i'm still looking for them. abby: to be a fly on the wall with graham and mccain listening to their conversations because they are very close. moving on, there is a lot going on. north korea as well. pete: we also mentioned he had a long speech last night. the president went in and talked about protecting the american people from a nuclear north korea. he added a little nickname to the rocket man. it's not just the rocket man kim jong un it's little rocket man. >> we can't have mad men out there shooting rockets all over the place. by the way, rocket man should have been handled a long time ago. has been able to load and miniaturize a war head on to an icbm and actually get it, you know, kind of fully functional. that comes with a lot of risks for the north korean regime. i think it could be a final straw for china. and i think it could be a final straw for the international community to demand regime change. but they could do it. frif griff if you or south korea or japan, our allies where missiles have literally been flying over their heads, what are they thinking this morning? >> so a couple of things. you know, the south koreans are in discussions with the united states about reintroducing tactical nuclear weapons back into the south korean peninsula, the japanese are we looking their constitution which prevents them from having offensive military capabilities and actually making that massive change in their society to so that they could go on the offense. really who we need to be

talking to this morning is china. china has the ability to choke the north korean regime off economically, if it wanted to. it made a huge step this week with telling its banking system to clamp down on the regime and to no longer do business. but now they have to follow through. china has a history and a habit of kind of dialing things up when international pressure dials up. and then when we -- you know, when we shift away or attention did i investigators, then they kind of go back to their same old ways. griff: colonel very quickly you advised vice president cheney. what do you think of the president's speech to the u.n. he said he would totally destroy north korea. was that the right move? what was your take on the speech at the u.n. >> i wish hey made the distinction between the north korea regime and north korean people. those people are suffering horribly under his father and grandfather. that said i'm fine with the tough talk. the calculus has to change in the region. right now from china's perspective, and i think that's who he was talking to much more than he was

talking to north korea that, you know, right now, from china's perspective, this is our problem. this is a south korean problem. it's a japanese problem. it's not theirs. now why are making it their problem. both through secondary sanctions, which means we are targeting chinese entities, that are doing business with north korea and by changing the security dynamic like i just mentioned where their old rivals, the japanese are now going on the offense. griff: lastly, "yes" or "no," colonel, is the hydrogen test the red line now? >> i think that would be unprecedented. it hasn't happened, actually, since the 1980s with the chinese, they did it over land to. do it over international waters in addition to having a lot of dead fish, it would be so hugely provocative that i think it could finally change that calculus that i was talking about. griff: thank you colonel michael waltz, preechingts your time. >> thank you. griff: senator john mccain saying once again he will vote no on the republican healthcare repeal.

collins. mitch mcconnell not doing anything to turn things around. maybe punishment is in order. >> this is what leadership is supposed to do get people in order. right? it might be like rounding up cats sometimes. he has also been in there for decades. these people know what they're doing. the fact there was no -- with collins and murkowski could have removed them from miss there could have been some punishment to get them in order, move through with the agenda that the leader has, which is supposed to mirror so some degree, of course, what the president wants. the agenda of the party. and what they have campaigned on for six or seven years. pete: that pesky thing, too. why suddenline is there no punishment? since there was no punishment for senators murkowski or collins. of course they are going to do the same thing and for frankly the same reason. we know that obamacare is on a death bed. they have got to take action. graham-collins is not perfect. at least it begins to move news a position where we are

less harmed and perhaps get to more repeal. that's their job and that's the issue here. abby: tammy a lot of people get their politics from late-night television and this past week jimmy kimmel has been peek speaking out on the healthcare bill and turned out he got many of the talking points from chuck schumer. the question is for months now. that's one side of it as far as we know, he has not asked the other side cassidy or graham for their perspective or their thoughts on where they are coming from on this bill. >> yeah. look, the world is that he has been coached and has been for months. he made up his mind he wanted to kill this monstrous thing. here is the problem. then you have a preconceived point of view. then you go look for the information that will support that. pete: correct. >> very different than going to look for the facts of the matter. whether you are an audience of a late night comedy show or "fox & friends" news program at night, people want the facts of the matter. and they get the impression well he has determined this by looking at the entire field. in fact, it wasn't. and to not also disclose to

his audience that it's not just -- look, the son -- the horrible dynamic there that this is just a regular person who has learned about this and this is his position or in fact, no, he has been coached on a partisan way, moving in a partisan framework to destroy something that he determined in a preconceived framework that should be killed. abby: why not have cassidy back on the show again and have a debate. go back and forth that would be useful for people watching. pete: the type of thing we do on this show. >> it is. it's about think tanks and information, which he received from senator schumer bolstering their preferred outcomes. pete: this is honest question. is there any difference between democrats and late night comedians? are they one in the same? >> i don't even know if it's about democrats politics. it's about liberalism about the idea that only government can help. in addition to being wrongs

republicans praise that time period and want to get back to that what he was known for is comprehensive tax reform working with tipp o'neal across the aisle to get things done. where have we lost sight that that is a good thing? >> abby, you are so correct. i think the american people care way more. even people pretty partisan like me care way more about results than we do about partisanship. it isn't a goal in and of itself. it's a mean means to get to a goal. we have to be results oriented. i would also point out that donald trump, while he is, of course, a republican in many ways he is a post partisan president. you know, the trump movement was not a highly partisan movement. we were as much against establishment republicans as we were against establishment democrats. so it's much more about president trump and the people against the washington establishment. than it is r vs. d. >> one last question for you here. obviously we are probably not going to see bipartisan on healthcare is tax reform

out? >> see two issues for starters. legal matters and then obviously the fights against that and we note nfl's real big as we saw with tom brady and ezealial elliott back and forth. reaction from the public. just recently saw a rally, protest outside the nfl office as few weeks ago in an attempt to try to from my perspective bully the nfl into hiring collin kaepernick. that's what i saw. i think there would be push back from that. pete: that back fires as well. dr. baden we have to get your insight on another story. new report on aaron hernandez says the star had advanced stages of cte now the nfl is suing the nfl over those claims. you were one of those to examine aaron hernandez as well and i should disclose as well your wife is an attorney for his family as well. you took a look at aaron hernandez. what do you make of these developments? >> the brain shows that he had severe, what's called chronic traumatic encephalopathy, injuries due

to repeated blows to the head. this isn't new. you are too young to remember when i was a kid boxing was a big sport and it was known that 20ths, 30s, all time boxers became punch drunk. every time they being knocked out they have brain damage. so brain damage from head injuries have been well established. it's now been applied to football. where it's not intended to cause brain injury as in boxing, but that's a real issue. and the recent studies have shown that an awful lot of very great number of nfl football players have that condition. and remarkable thing with hernandez with a 27 at a very young age, he has very severe cte. and there is an issue with attorneys as to whether or not that could be a

mitigating factor in homicide charges. but, remember, the attorneys and hernandez have claimed that it was innocent. they didn't say he was -- there were reasons for -- for it. they say he just didn't do it and the second jury found that the first jury didn't. pete: they are suing the patriots in the nfl. where does this go? because he wouldn't be the only guy who has cte. >> not the only player who had cte or any stage three, pretty severe stage 1 to 4. he stopped playing when he was 23. it's a rough case when you are looking look and say wow there is a great need for compassion until you say wait a second this guy is accused of shooting five people and killing a few people as well. i think the term is get in line. because there are a lot of people who did not do that or accused of doing that he was only 23 when he retired and took those hits. great change takes time. 1938 is when reservers at john hopkins first found that smoking would shorten

your life. it wasn't until 1966 that we got warning labels on cigarette packs. we are just starting to discover certain information now. 2002 i believe is when dr. bennett first discovered cte in a football player in mike kenster former pittsburgh steeler, long time steeler center from. that point until now, we have come a far way. but maybe it might be 10, 15, 20 years before we could look back and on medical research maybe say okay, aaron hernandez, 90% probably killed oden because he had cte. we are a far ways from it. there are a lot more serious -- not more serious but a lot of other players involved in that who won't kill anybody. drnchts baden go back to you. boxing now with football. this is a 20-million-dollar lawsuit. it's going to set a precedent is it your sense medically that this is going to become a much larger issue? >> absolutely. a much larger issue because,

remember, hernandez was college football and pop warner, that families, a lot of families now are concerned about their kids playing football at an early stage. nfl is worried about that. from a medical point of view as a physician, there has got to be better protection for the kids and better ways of -- playing football so that there aren't head injuries. there are other injuries, too. the head injuries that are most significant. pete: we have to leave it right there. the nfl has the challenge of the fact that some fans are saying you are turning the flag into flag football all the flags on hits and what you can and cannot do. squeezed on both sides. >> i read a poll 34% of americans football fans less likely to watch because of protests. and you start throwing in all the seriousness. and they want to sue the nfl or the patriots. again, as dr. baden said what about these others? what about pop warner and college and his parents who

down party lines and that is what republicans had a big issue with obamacare. that former president barack obama shoved this down everyone's throats and the democrats were the only ones on board that were able to actually get this through. most of them didn't even read that bill. do you think he has a point there and we should get more voices and should be some bipartisan evident when it comes to healthcare? >> you know, i would think he had a point if it wasn't a solution searching for a problem. in other words, mccain is looking for a reason at this point to vote against the bill and that is his reason dda de jour. i wondered if he lobbied own solution obamacare, own people nancy pelosi most prominent voice says we will pass it first and figure out what's in it later on. john mccain ran on tape, on video everywhere. on repealing obamacare. he has rescued this thing twice. at what point does the g.o.p. say listen, you're not a member of our party anymore. again, with all due respect

intention of voting for this bill which his governor loves. he campaigned on repeal and replace. is he letting arizona down. is he referring to governor doocy who didn't support the skinny bill but did support this one. he thought that might bring mccain on board but unfortunately it did not. abby: 52 republicans. don't have john mccain. so now we are waiting or murkowski, collins and maybe rand paul. we will see where that goes. the president tweeting to murkowski saying alaska had 200 percent plus increase in premiums under obamacare. worse in the country. deductibles are high. people are angry. lisa murkowski come through. obviously really sending a clear message this morning. also one about rand paul. >> listen, i spend a lot of time in washington and as i mentioned, they have a math problem. pete: look on the screen right there you see three seats they need three seats to on board. griff: rand paul first out of the gate to say no.

proving not so much an obstructionist but principled guy. while it is a feet from the presidenten couraging senator paul i don't think that's likely to come. murkowski and collins, coverage big point for collins. step back for a second. this is how the american people view. this this is an easy deal. have you the white house. you have the senate, and you have the house. yet they can't do it. pete: they campaigned on it for seven years. >> campaigned on it. it was a signature issue for this president for the republican party. even before donald trump was in this. and now, you're about to cross the threshold on september 30th where they have to have 60 votes. instead of 50 and have vice president pence break the tie. so this problems that going to be perceived by the american people. aside from our doing the votes. and counting the hezbollah and whether the president, who is all-in trying to stop this from happening, i think he understands how the american people are going to view. this and you know what? everybody is going to take the blame.

the president is saying he this is not over yet. is he convinced that he can get rand paul over to that side. he says i know rand paul. this is what he tweeted this morning. i know rand paul. i think he may find a way to get there for the good of the party. as you said, griff, he knows how important this is for the country. how important this is for the president. but also for republicans. because they have been campaigning on this for seven frickin' years. if they can't get this done. pete: well said. abby: i'm not sure there is going to be another chance. pete: how do you go back to constituents and say send me back to the swamp when i am the swamp. we have the majority and can't pass it. pete: you have the president with luther strange. you have the freedom caucus and steve bannon and others on the side of roy moore. is he running against mitch mcconnell. that they feel like he has been ineffective. this is mitch mcconnell's last chance in my opinion. if you can't bring your caucus together. if he can get rand paul on because rand paul voted for the skinny bill.

guys. pete piatt you are looking at this president he has under the rhetoric at the u.n. talking about little rocket man and destroy them if necessary. are they taking the right approach and what more should be done? >> a lot of concentration goes on the president's rhetoric as well as kim's as well. but the reality is there is a lot of other things happening behind the scenes in this administration also. when you look at the last 25, 30 years. the guy pops up kind of like a zit every once in a while and give him concessions. that's changed now. this president and this administration think they have tightened the screws on him and gotten china tout table. basically ships that went there, of course. they talked about trade with china to get china who has 90% of the trade with north korea to the table. china has publicly denounced them. they supported two u.n. resolutions, of course. and they have talked about. they stopped imports of coal. unlike before this administration has gotten one of the key players, china, to the table to help us out. i think that china and russia and others were perfectly comfortable prior to have north korea be anage territory to us.

of course the missiles are shooting to the east. not to the west. they didn't care. that's changing in this administration. not only rhetoric but tangible steps to ching the dynamic there. abby: there is a reason why you look back to george h.w. bush, when you lay out all the options on the table in dealing with north korea. there aren't many and there aren't many good ones. no one really wants to go to war with north korea. that would be a disaster for everybody, including china. that is the last thing they want. do you think that north korea and china, do they think of donald trump differently than other leaders in the past? do they take him more seriously, given the rhetoric that he has shown us? >> well, two things, first of all, i have the great honor of representing a district that if something happens in the world, our people are there. because we have a huge military concentration. no one wants war. it's the last thing that i any we should obviously want at all. it would be catastrophic losses if that happens there. i think that china doesn't understand or how to read president trump. you know, china usually takes the long-term approach. i don't think they understand how to read the president. that can be good and bad

obviously. i think they are nervous. and, like i said, you have seen them step up like never before under this administration. yes, china's red line, of course is, they don't want to destabilize korean peninsula. they have a huge refugee crisis, of course. but the redder line for china which i think this president has touched and tapped is trade with china and relationship with us. griff: congressman, just a quick follow up. abby has said going all the way back to george w. bush. fired more missiles and threatened allies in more ways than his father and grandfather. have you got to be looking as a former navy seal what can we do militarily? >> i think there has to be two pronged approach if you will. yes, this leader unlike his father has really aggressively pushed this year trying to get these capabilities. i think we have plenty of military options. none of them are good. none of them are good. it's going to be bad. you have cyber. have you other hard military things. diplomacy has to be there as well, too. i think after the congress -- people's congress in october, the president should go to china

corey lewandowski this morning. action pac and former donald trump campaign manager. co, thanks for joining us this morning. abby: where are you, corey? >> i'm in the swamp today, unfortunately, trying to get out. so, please, please, as soon as i'm done i'm getting out of the swamp. pete: helping you get out of the swamp virtually for a few minutes. you saw the speech last night he slammed senator mccain for that decision. was this a surprise for the white house? did they hope to have his vote. >> well, of course the white house wants all of the votes that they can get on the healthcare bill because this is something that the president pledged during the campaign was to repeal and replace obamacare. we saw that the governor of arizona has come out in support of the bill. and that john mccain specifically, when he ran for re-election last year went out and campaigned on the fact that the obamacare bill was a disaster, premiums are up 116% in arizona. and now, on two separate occasions, john mccain had the opportunity to repeal and replace obamacare, and has not done that. which has been, you know, a lie to the people of arizona when he said that's what he is going to do when he came

back to washington. abby: sounds like the president doesn't think this is over yet. even though i think the votes as you know are so crucial here and still waiting on susan collins and murkowski. says he knows rand paul and trying to convince him thinking he could come back again to a yes vote. what do you think is going on behind closed doors? is this just a president trying to convince him via twitter or do you think they have had some conversations? >> i'm certain the president and senator paul have spoken about the legislation. i'm sure that the president's team is making sure that they understand exactly what the senators' concerns are about the piece of legislation. the same is true with senator collins. i'm certain of it. look, the president is a great dealmaker. he is the greatest closer. what we are going to do is find a way to bring these people together because it's the right thing to do for the american people. if not, obamacare collapses and people go without healthcare. that's the problem. and senator paul knows that senator collins knows it. senator murkowski. you need to find a way to get to yes.

pete: why wouldn't rand paul be there. he voted for the skinny bill which people think is weaker than this one. >> i don't speak for senator paul. i think his main objection is the notion of federal inch, which is giving the states the opportunity to control healthcare at their level is important. but that also means the states should be raising the money for the healthcare bill from their own respective state. and so, you know, the senator, you know, is a person who believes in states rights a lot. wants to make sure if we are going to give that control back the states have that responsibility. griff: hey, corey, griff here. i went down to the u.n. and asked the president did your former boss. how what did you make of his speech to the u.n.' and what did you make of reports that he was specifically advised not to go after kim jong un by name called him rocket man and that's the headline. abby: still did last night in alabama. >> i had a four word term on the campaign let trump be trump. that's what the american people want and that's what they expect and that's what he should be. the president went to the united nations and he made a bold speech that netanyahu

said was probably, you know, the greatest speech that has been given at the u.n. in the last 30 years. the reason for that is for the first time the american president is out telling the world exactly the things -- the way that things have to be done for the united states. we can't continue to pay 22% of the dues to the united nations for 193 countries that don't pay their fair share. it's time we hold people accountable and nations accountable. we have to have the collective effort of china and russia to ensure that a mad man in north korea doesn't promulgate nuclear weapons. that's something we have to do and the president has called on the world to make sure that happens. pete: you talked about holding people accountable. also last night in alabama the president talked about owners in the nfl holding players' accountable for the fact they are taking a knee. he spoke passionately about it we know is he a football fan himself. what brought him to the point enough of this kneeling stuff and the owners should be on the hook as well for what players are doing? >> well, look, you know this. you have to respect our flag. too many people, my family,

you as a veteran, you know, have fought for our opportunity to have that great american flag and died for it on many occasions. and this notion that you are a professional athlete and you can't have the decency to stand and put your hand on your heart and listen to what is so patriotic to so many people. you know, it's deplorable. and what the president said was look, try that with jerry jones. i think you try that with bob craft. you see what happens if you do that hopefully those players don't work anymore. my boy plays flag football. i couldn't imagine what would happen if he decided to take a knee when they played the national anthem. it would be incomprehensible to me. that's what those professional athletes are doing. they are instilling these values of non-patriotic values into our children. kids look up to these athletes. they want to be them. they emulate them. what we see is they don't season have the decency to stand for our great country and what it means. it's a terrible disaster. abby: if we cannot respect the flag and the national anthem what do we stand for as a country? that is so well said and so

meddling. whether it was some aggressive people from the islands of fujitay that were meddling. people were meddling. and people can, as facebook stands today, they have created a social network that let's me, you, griff, whoever have a stronger, bigger voice if you want to plunk down a credit card. pete: you said facebook so far -- they have seen themselves as infrastructure for conversations not determining which ones -- well, they can put their finger on algorithm if you pay more you can be heard more. >> they can. you remember we go back a couple years ago and we started questioning mark zuckerberg the ceo of facebook is this kind of fair and is there influence there? we are not a media company. we have nothing to do with this. this is just a platform. slowly but surely he has come around. it becomes irrefutable that there is real connection that needs to happen there. the oversight that facebook is doing on their own really hasn't cut the mustard. why did any of us care about

that he ran on as a senator saying this is something i want to do and he says he's going to vote against it. >> pete: he's saying listen i'm opposed to this because i want regular order so that essentially means i want to go back to 60 votes which is coming up september 30 and the ability for democrats to filibuster dead in the water. the president tweeting to rand paul maybe you'll come around. clearly mccain is going to be firm. now, this is a math problem. now if that happens in where they are against it rand paul has one last chance before this really becomes unattainable to be the saviour, we'll see if he is inclined. >> abby: the president knows how serious this is for the american people so that he come pained on very strongly so he's been up tweeting as much as he can on this morning tweeting directly about john mccain and he says john mccain never had any intention of voting for this will which his governor loves. he campaigned on repeal and replace let arizona down and also tweeting in alaska saying

alaska had a 200% plus increase in premiums under obamacare. worst in the country. deductibles high, people angry, lisa murkowski come through off the one on rand paul. >> griff: he tweeted this i know rand paul and he may find a way to get there for the good of the party coming from experience because rand paul did vote for the skinny bill that went down. this will is stronger. rand paul has concerned but he believes hopefully a guy will come around and say iran on repeal and replace too. this isn't perfect but gets us a long way down the road and it is a now or never moment if you don't want single payer healthcare this is a republicans chance otherwise you don't deliver on a campaign promise and keep it a federal issue and democrats go for singer payer. you'll see what bernie wants. you see what elizabeth warren wants. they want medicare for all single payer. if they don't send it back to the states which this will does, this graham cassidy bill send the decision-making back to the states it is a one way ticket to single payer and that's what susan collins and john mccain

and rand paul need to know that's what they're voting for with chuck schumer if they oppose it. >> abby: can we pull that graphic back up because i want to give our viewers a sense of how close this vote is. there are 52 republicans in the senate and for this to pass you need 50 to vote yes so as of now john mccain said no so the reason we have those three boxes lit up right there, you have susan collins of maine, you have murkowski of alaska and finally rand paul and the reason rand paul was there was because we read that tweet from president trump saying he knows rand paul and thinks he could get him on board so if you listen to the president this morning he doesn't think this fight is over yet and if it is, if it doesn't work out, griff as you know this could be their very last attempt >> griff: that's right. they talk about dramatically this is truly the last chance and it will be fascinating when we talk to senator luther strange because if the senator of that race is mitch mcconnell, where is mitch mcconnell leader mcconnell on this healthcare

last stop? >> pete: you want somebody, it's much m. he has one chance to show he's a majority leader. this is the moment and are going to put the screws to collins, real punishment. lose a committee assignment something like that if you are going to if they are going to vote against the bill at some point it comes down to brass tax and conservatives don't want to hear regular order that is a typical swamp excuse from john mccain. you've had seven years you know where you stand. >> abby: now they have until september 30 is the deadline for this will so keep a close eye on that. we'll see what happens but last night as we've been talking about president trump was in alabama states that he won overwhelmingly in the election i think it was 62% very much in his comfort zone talking to his base for luther strange who we will have on in a few minutes so don't miss that but talking about a number of issues one of them many people did not expect he would bring up he talked about the nfl something he's very passionate about and kneeling during the national anthem which he has zero respect for. >> pete: he's seeing same thing we're seeing which is kids

the wrong path and he's created a real debate in this country. he should see for himself what's at stake. >> abby: that's a great point and understand exactly what the flag means for this country and sacrifice so many of our brave men and women are making every day to fight for our freedom and for their ability to play on that field and to stand for that national anthem. >> pete: we got a statement from the nfl player's association. it says whether or not nfl commissioner and the owners will speak for themselves about their views on player rights and their commitment to player safety remains to be seen so that in my estimation that's a statement they're waiting to see if anyone actually follows through. they are going to side with the players but ultimately the players work for the coaches who work for the managers who work for the owners and if the owner says stand up you play a game for a living and i pay your salary they have that perogative in the united states of america. just like they have the perogative to kneel but you and i could lose our job for not standing for the anthem too because you work for a private corporation. same thing with the nfl. >> abby: well it is a passionate one. you all been sending us your

luther strange is determined to drain that swamp. >> pete: president trump in campaign mode stomping for alabama senator luther strange. >> abby: joining us now is senator luther strange of alabama. i know it was a big night last night. >> senator: it was a fantastic night. the packed house in huntsville, alabama, the welcome of the president back to alabama and i could not be more grateful for his friendship first of all and for the time he took out of an unbelievably busy schedule to come to alabama and talk about why he wants me to join him in washington to brain swamp and get his agenda passed. >> abby: what do you say to critics who say you are part of that swamp you are mitch mcconnell's guy, you are exactly what we don't need in washington you've heard from a lot of critics many folks on the right side, people that have supported trump who are now for roy moore your opponent whose now ahead by eight points i think in real clear politics what do you say to the critics? >> senator: oh, i think the president said it better than anyone. he pointed out i just met mitch mcconnell a few months ago.

i've been in washington less time than donald trump has. this is an agenda and the president said it flat out. i'm being saddled with mitch mcconnell because there's a lot of people that have an agenda against him and they will try and use me as some sort of a symbol of that, but i'm the newest person to be in washington and i've got the record of draining the swamp taking on the establishment, so i'm sticking with the president and i'm so glad he stuck with me last night. i think it's going to make all of the difference in this race. >> pete: senator if this healthcare bill repeal and replace does not pass, would you have faith in mitch mcconnell continuing as senate majority leader with now twice the bill going down and the inability to bring his caucus around if it didn't pass would you have confidence in him? >> senator: well i've said all along that if we don't get things progressing in washington , we will look at every option whether we need new leadership whether we need a new approach. i talked to the president about that. we've got to get things done the frustration level is through the

roof and i'm the most frustrated person out there believe me. >> griff: senator griff here i want to ask you how confident are you that you can close what is now an eight point gap in the poll and what does it say that at this critical juncture as pete talks about health care, tax reform is up next that we're having a primary playout where members of presidents former staff supporting your opponent judge roy moore? >> senator: well i made a joke in the debate the other night. seems like a lot of my opponents come from the white house unemployment line. there is other agendas out there that are national. i'm new to the national scene. i think i've become sort of a proxy for other people's agendas this race will turn out i'm confident it will turn on the turnout. who gets their voters out to the polls? people of alabama love the president. i think his strong statement and support of me last night will sort of remove these outside agendas and get people focused on who they want in washington and i feel great. >> pete: well there's no doubt

senator the president's support has shown a hidden base of support that makes made a lot of polls and pollsters wrong but you talk about the white house unemployment line referring to steve bannon, some who conservatives who have left this white house and now support your opponent roy moore as well as sarah palin, mark meadows, the chairman of the freedom caucus, ben carson, because you're conservative and so is roy moore why have these decided to line up behind him. do they feel like he's more of an outsider? >> senator: no, i think it's all about much m and the national agenda, power between competing groups and it's kind of like actual i had a conservative leader say look this has nothing to do with you. it's all about mitch mcconnell and what my grandmother would say a classic example of cutting off your nose despite your face. i've got the most conservative record of accomplishment as the president repeated time and again last night that's what's so ironic about this. my opponent would ultimately be an obstructionist and not advance the president's agenda.

encourages unity, encourages us to just appreciate what it means to be americans and stand for something. >> abby: well speaking of statements just moments ago the president responded tweeting this. going to the white house is considered a great honor for a championship team, steph curry is hesitating there for, invitation is withdrawn. all right on that note, pete i'll hand it over to you. >> pete: abbey how is it unity to not know? >> abby: it should be an honor. >> pete: it should be. well new reports that former u.s. ambassador to the u.n. samantha powers sought to unmask hundreds of americans. even after election day averaging more than one request for every working day in 2016, even to the very days leading up to president trump's inauguration but is this story getting the coverage it deserves here to debate it marie harp, former state department spokesperson under president obama and caylee mcanaty, rnc republican national committee spokesperson both of you thank you very much for joining us this morning so maria

i'll start with you. you were involved in national security matters obviously with the obama administration likely knew samantha power. did she have any business unmask ing at this many names that frequently all the way to the end when we know that a lot of these things have been leaked we've seen evidence of potentially some political targeting. what business does she have doing this much unmasks? >> well pete, i don't know if this story is true but here is what i do know, that the u.s. ambassador to the united nations is a national security role. just look at what nikki haley is doing for example, on north korea right now and they often have a very legitimate reason, a need to know as we say in the intel world to get this information and we've seen no evidence in any of these stories that anyone was unmasked improperly, and that's the key here. there is a process as you know, our former colleagues in the intelligence community take that process very seriously and they're quite frankly offended by the notion that some are saying that they did this for political reasons because they take that process very seriously

>> pete: caylee, marie says no evidence that it was done improperly. what do you say to that? >> well there is some very real questions here. chiefly how did the u.n. ambassador become the u.s. un masker. this is striking, she was reading the private conversations of u.s. citizens and unmasking their identity at the rate of more than one-time a day and marie, you say this is the role of the u.n. ambassador but why is it john boulton only did this one-time when she did it 260 times. >> pete: that's a great question we also checked on this there is a media angle to this too and we checked the morning and evening news of abc, nbc and cbs when the day the story broke. zero minutes of coverage on this story at all. marie you'd have to acknowledge the double standard were it to be john boulton who was unmasks ing names all the way to the end and somehow those names were coming out in media reports and failing new york times and washington post. there would be a lot of coverage of that and maybe a scandal accused; correct? >> look i don't know john boulton was actually never confirmed as u.n. ambassador so it's a little different and the

other difference that you really can't compare to other u.n. ambassadors is the fact that we were going through an unprecedented attack on our democracy by a foreign adversary , and that we had never seen this level of interference in our election by the russians and look, the u.n. ambassador is part of the cabinet. they play a national security role. she was having daily contact with the russian ambassador for example. she was one of the people that i'm sure was supposed to raise this issue with the russians, so look, until there's evidence that anything was done improperly, there's just a lot of accusations and no evidence here. >> pete: caylee, marie says she bud get evidence. bob mueller is running around with a bunch of obama lawyers looking for evidence. should the rnc not look at samantha power and say we want to know what you're doing? >> look, we encourage mueller to look at this. we encourage the investigation, the intel committee investigation to continue. these are very serious questions , pete and it's very disturbing when you have not

i'm surprised he's so relaxed. >> pete: that's because he's like i've got this man. i know what i'm doing but to think about the contentious post that could be the ambassador of russia in light of everything yet he's a consensus pick speaks a lot to him and his credibility in that space. >> abby: well he came from china so if he's confirmed he will be the first ever ambassador to both china and to russia. >> griff: it would be crazy not to confirm him. he's one of the most gracious people i've met in the 2012 campaign and it's great for this country. >> abby: i'm proud of him. >> pete: absolutely. well we've got a statement from the nfl i can't pull it up in my e-mail, but it says the nfl and players are at our best when we help create a sense of unit in our culture, there's no better response from the clubs and players in the terrible natural disasters, comments like these demonstrate an unfortunate lack of respect for the nfl, our great game and all our players and failure to understand the overwhelming force for good our clubs and players represent in our communities this is a

the september 30 deadline in the latest effort to repeal and replace obamacare. >> pete: will they be able to get this across the finish line that's the million dollar question. joining us is the assistant to the president and director of the office of legislative affairs for the white house mark short. mark, thanks a lot for joining us this morning so that's the big question we see the president last night going after senator mccain this morning talking about senator mccain as well as rand paul, lisa murkowsk i, in speculation about susan collins. are you confident do you leave you with get this across the finish line? >> pete we're still confident we will repeal obamacare. it's what the american people elected republican congress to do in 2010 and what they elected republican senate to do in 2014 and it's a promise they made with american people in 2016 when they elected donald trump to be president of the united states. he has been ready, willing and able to sign a piece of legislation repealing obamacare from day one. congress needs to deliver that will to them. this is our last best chance before the september 30 deadline to get the bill done.

it comes down to four senators, senator paul, mccain, senator mu rkowski and collins are the ones we're trying to convince to get two of the final four votes in order to repeal obamacare but let's talk for one second pete about how bad it actually is and how bad it's getting because i don't think that many politicians in d.c. have been honest with the american people about this. right now in arizona, prices have increased 203% over the last four years. in arizona it's over 190% on individual plans. across our country, 45 per puerto rico of our counties, 45% of the counties have only one insurer left. that's essentially monopoly. insurers have fled the market which means without competitions prices continue to sky rocket and something that's not being told to the american people pete is that the taxes some of the taxes obamacare were delayed by democrats to take impact in 2018 there is a whole new tax coming on every single health plan in america which means most families in america will get hit

with another $500 tax starting in january of 2018. people are getting crushed bio woman a care. it is time to bring this nightmare to an end and repeal it. >> griff: mark it's griff. so let's talk about that september 30 dead loin how quickly will it come if senator rand paul don't come along an get this across the finish line how difficult does it become? >> griff we're confident the american people continue to say to congress we can't let this law stand that we will get it done. the reason we're getting a second opportunity is because many members heard throughout the summer months the frustration of americans who said there's a cry to please repeal this law and you haven't done it yet so we have another chance. if we don't for some reason get it done now, i am confident we will continue to work until it gets repealed. >> pete: mark we've been here before and these susan collins there was no real punishment for susan collins for bucking the white house. what can be done to put the screws to them frankly this is brass tax knuckle politics

leader mcconnell, what more can be done? >> pete i don't think it's a matter of punishment. i think it's a matter of the will of the american people and they will speak and they've spoken which is why there's such a specific turnover in congress and there will continue to be until we actually listen to the american people and get done what they wanted. there's a large number of special interest fighting this and we've talked about how many of the healthcare insurance industries have continued to stand and try to protect obamacare and some of these solutions say you know what we need to do is to have this bipartisan plan that basically bails out companies with more payments. the american people are tired of this. they're tired of special interest getting their way. the insurance industry climbed into bed with the obama administration at a price and that price was if you mandate that everybody in america gets health insurance and every employer forces you to get health insurance, well that creates an artificial demand for insurers across our country. >> pete: and we'll bail you out. >> and now they want a bailout. >> pete: they're also tired of majority leaders that say they tear it out root and branch and
