the governor of puerto rico. still interested and eager to host the president of the united states, has promised next tuesday to visit puerto rico and provide any resources the u.s. commonwealth needs. "the five" is now. ♪ >> jesse: i'm jesse watters with kimberly guilfoyle, juan williams, dana perino and greg gutfeld. it's 5:00 in new york city, and this is "the five" ." three hours away from nfl kickoff. players will begin taking the field for the first time since monday's anthem protest. there is expected to be some more controversy at tonight's bears-packers game. green bay says its players, coaches, and staff will link arms during the anthem this evening. they have encouraged their fans to do the same. president trump and a lot of other americans upset with the

league's ongoing demonstrations. he spoke exclusively about it with fox news in a new intervie interview. >> the nfl cannot disrespect our country. they cannot disrespect our flag or our national anthem. and they can't have people sitting down or kneeling down during our national anthem. i have so many friends that are owners. they are in a box. i have spoken to a couple of them. they say we are in a situation where we have to do something. i think they are afraid of their players, you want to know the truth. and i think it's disgraceful. they've got to be tough, and they've got to be smart. >> jesse: are afraid of their players, kimberly. according to "the washington post," the nfl game operations manual says "all players must be on the sideline for the national anthem and must stand at attention, face the flag, hold helmets in the left hand, and refrain from talking or face discipline such as fines or suspension."

are the owners afraid of disciplining their players? >> kimberly: it seems so. there is going to be public outrage either way. they don't want the players to say in solitary we are going to walk out. you don't wanted to escalate more than it has. you want to encourage healthy discussion, absolutely. that they are there to do a job. it is within the rules and regulations. again, i'm going to say this. roger goodell needs to handle this and meet with the owners and come to some kind of solution because it's bad for everybody. the players are feeling like they are being put in a position. the owners feel like they are being put in a position. the nfl. it's a confluence of total chao chaos. >> jesse: it looks like, dana, according to reports, everyone is going to link arms and there may not be any kneeling. what does that signify to you? >> dana: made maybe they have

reached a turning point and i can figure out how to get past it which i think would be good for everybody. in a way, what's happened is because you have to -- you lose the ability to see each other as individuals when you are fighting a culture war. you are on this team or that team. i think with the owners of trying to do started the -- starting with kaepernick was to try to be thoughtful, understand his views. movie they should've dealt with that then. but the horse is out of the barn. this has all happened. it's all out there in the open and the only thing they can try to do is move past it because i think the players want to play. the fans want to enjoy it come in the owners want to make mone money. i imagine that president would rather talk about his tax reform plan. >> jesse: that's right. but this is also a lot of fun. >> greg: it becomes more and more comical every day. these are grown men, and they are engaging in this, it's almost like middle school

playacting. i know the phrase virtue signaling is overdone but they are engaged in something that's almost not real. it's starting to spread like a weird hysterical social justice. if they don't do it, and i think trump is right. i think they are scared of online mob pure pressure. they are scared of being seen as, when you have people saying if you stand you are a racist. there are people saying that now. there is this peer pressure that's happening that you used to have in middle school. i thought the cowboys created a good solution. kneel before the anthem because that removes the confusion. most americans when they see you kneel during the anthem, they think you're protesting the flag. you can say no, no, no, we are not. it's about social injustice. but you've got to forgive us being confused. if you have to explain your protest, your protest is a

failed one. if i were a cop. you have to do your job there. they are kneeling because of the police. the cops should kneel when the players are coming out on the field. >> kimberly: >> jesse: the defed for the the seattle seahawks pp fine point on it. >> i would like to challenge every american watching a show to treat people better. that's what it's about. it's about treating people like human beings. that's the first step. the first step is to recognize and see somebody as an equal being when you recognize them. this is not a violence -- violent protest. it's a peaceful protest. >> jesse: what do you think? >> juan: i loved it. i think the big challenge spiritually to have people acknowledge when you have social injustice in the country. i don't think it's a failed protest by any means. in fact, the kids are grown protest. you look at the numbers in terms

of what americans think. americans generally think it's not so cool to disrespect the flag in any way. but they also think what president trump's response has been is way wrong. even more people that have any trouble with the kneeling when the flag is shown in the anthem played, more people say president trump's response is out of order. specifically i think people are still up that over the idea that he would use the term sob to talk about the players. it is so small and so trivial. the difference is one is a substantive important issue in our society. having to do with the way people -- >> greg: looking like pigs. >> juan: it's a caricature and a silly thing. >> greg: while cops are getting shot and killed. >> juan: really think about how the players are kneeling on the owners are handling it, you

see people trying to signal. trying to signal left the fans get involved and show that they too understand what the players are saying. they don't have to necessarily agree with every aspect of it, but the idea is you would acknowledge there is a social problem with the way police deal with black people in this country. >> greg: there is a social problem with how black men are dealing with other black men. there is more violence between black men and black men and black men and white cops. i would like to see an equal amount of attention devoted to that. >> juan: there is a time. >> greg: not by the players. they are kneeling during the anthem to protest police violence. >> juan: this is like saying these guys don't know what they are standing far. they don't know what they are doing. >> greg: they can't explain it. >> juan: the owners that made the point that the players are involved in social causes, charities, they do a great deal. this is not about somehow a bunch of juveniles who don't know what they are doing or don't know how to protest.

>> greg: what is the difference between social injustice and injustice? >> juan: this is a social injustice. >> greg: what is the difference? >> juan: i just said. this is a social injustice in terms of race relations inside our own country. >> jesse: to disagree few, juan, i would save the mission of the protest was to talk about police brutality, that failed. no one is talking up please brutality right now. we are talking about disrespecting the flag. i believe everyone agrees you have a right to protest a noble issue which is being against police brutality but the time to do it is not during the national anthem. >> juan: let me say that's why you had a 91-year-old veteran in missouri, a white man, taking a knee. i want to show you this is a

60-year-old black veteran wearing an american legion hat in indianapolis as the president's motorcade ran by taking a knee. >> jesse: you also have veterans burning their jerseys and season tickets. >> kimberly: the message, it's important that people want to be against police brutality or injustice. fine, but it is getting lost. you are right. we are talking about trump. we are talking about everything else and why people are disrespecting the flag. they are not talking about that issue. i think the issue, they have absolutely every right to do so. he doesn't give people the right to disrespect the hardworking men and women that are police officers and law enforcement in this country by large measures that serve admirably and courageously and put their lives on the line every day. i have no tolerance for that kind of disrespect of officers when you are doing things like this and calling for police officers, pigs in a blanket, and for them to be killed and behaving the way people are.

i agree with the seahawks player. treat everybody, treat people with respect. make people feel like they count, you see them, you hear them and tried to lend a listening ear when someone has something to tell you about how they feel. >> jesse: just as we want black men to be respected by police officers, we want veterans to be respected by the players on the field during the anthem. the polling says 64% think players should stand and be respectful during the national anthem. this looks like the country is pretty much in agreement. >> dana: asked, except in the fox news poll last night, it showed year-over-year, people who thought it was acceptable to protest the anthem, whether it be kneeling or whatever, that that has gone up. six points. maybe that's because we are talking about it more. i would also say on the social media thing, listen to what

senator lankford said. he was talking about russian troll farms doing it again. they take people's pictures from the internet, make fake accounts and then the either #takeaknee or #boycottthenfl. they want to sell chaos. >> jesse: the russians again. call mueller. >> dana: if you feel like there is pure pressure on a certain issue, know that half of that is probably fake people, robots and russia, trying to do that to cause chaos. >> kimberly: russian robots. >> greg: everything put together. juan, i think you are misinterpreting me. i am not against the protest. i am saying it's a failed protest when people are confused by it. i think people are confused by what it is because they found the wrong symbol to kneel in front of. you can protest all you want.

bosses have a right to be upset if it's on the clock. that makes sense to me. life goes on. we are making this into some hysterical soap opera because, i don't know why, because of identity politics. there's no way out of it. once you get in it, you are stuck. >> juan: this is american history. this is a football league that wouldn't hire black people for a long people. that was white identity politics. we talk about who gets to play quarterback. >> greg: you are explaining it again. >> juan: identity politics, you don't want me to explain it? >> greg: i am saying the protest was about police and you are explaining -- never mind. i am sorry. it would be great if this protest was clear and everyone understood. >> juan: i will tell you what is clear. you look at the poll numbers, 57% disapprove of trump's response. 48% say they don't like the idea of the players kneeling. 57% said trump went over the

line. only 30% think that a player should be fired, which is what mr. trump called for, firing players. people think this is a form of protest. if you want to do it, it's on you. we may not agree but you shouldn't be fired for speaking your mind. >> greg: a businessman, when he looks at an event which is a place of work and you are doing it on the clock, a businessman businessman -- >> kimberly: and you have a contract. >> juan: guess what. that's not what the owners are saying. they are saying we want to join and show the players are unified. >> kimberly: because they are afraid. >> juan: that raises another point. people say, is he saying the white owners are afraid of the black players? >> greg: oh, god. >> jesse: i think we can agree the linking of the arms is a much better positive step.

knowing at that point it was in god's hands. they lots a lot of people ask, did this event change you? yes, it changed me but not in the ways you might think. it's only strengthened my faith in god and it's really crystallized what shows up as the goodness in people. i got to see that goodness in people. >> kimberly: scalise thanked the officers who saved his life and countless others. he had a personal message for all of the lawmakers in the room. >> when i come back into the chamber today, seeing the faces of all of you, it just means more to me that you can imagine. thanks for all that love and support. we are the people's house. this is the place where these ideas are supposed to be debated, and we fight through those issues but ultimately become together on whatever the board shows us 218.

if you can put the majority together, that's what rules the day. it's so important that as we are having those political battles we don't make them personal. i am so honored to be back here in the house serving with you. god bless each and everyone of you and god bless the united states of america. >> kimberly: special moment. a man who fought for his life. there were moments that were very touching. people thought he wasn't going to make it. he said through the prayers and courageous miss of the officers putting their life on the line to be able to save him, truly powerful moment and impactful message. respect our differences. we can debate but we have the system of government. >> dana: incredible work by the health care workers. the doctors, nurses, emergency room, rehabilitation. this was only two and a half months ago that the shooting took place. of course it was so traumatic.

president trump and the first lady go to the hospital to visit, the question was, was he going to make it? the injury could have severed an artery and the story wouldn't be as wonderful it is that is. amazing return. his colleagues seemed genuinely happy to have him back. our own lauren fine, he used to work here, is now his press secretary for the majority web and has been working hard to make this moment happened. it was flawless. >> kimberly: it was fantastic. she did a wonderful job. they must've been her time with us here on "the five." powerful moment. he brings up the message that capitol officers saved his life. thank god they were armed and there to protect the people. >> greg: it's amazing how strong he sounds after two and a half months. it points out a strange strange reason. the surgeons were able to save a

gunshot victim because they are so good at it. they have a lot of practice in d.c. and other states working on gunshot victims. it reminds you the number of gunshot victims, murder victims could be much worse than they are now but it's being covered by the fact that these surgeons are so good at saving lives. the numbers in chicago or d.c., it's not a reduction in homicides but surgeons and technology reducing murders. that's kind of amazing. this thing would have been a huge, huge deal for a year. it seems like it happen forever ago. we are so constantly turning through stories. >> kimberly: it's unbelievable. so happy to see his family too. so nice. >> jesse: it was a powerful moment. i am not the most devout guy but talking about prayer, people coming together. you get chills. he wasn't supposed to survive.

he fought back. gabby giffords, also shot and they head, fought back and recovered bravely. we talked about 9/11, the anniversary of the people who stormed the cockpit. harvey, people wrestling other people out of the water. you see the fighting american spirit and it inspires people. it inspires you to come together as a fellow american. these moments are so few and far between. we were united after 9/11 for a while. iraq tore us apart. the scalise shooting. a couple moments ago, we had a moment where we reflected about our rhetoric. that's gone, especially after charlottesville. then harvey hit and we looked at the texas resilience. now we are talking about the divisiveness of the kneelers. people need to recognize this country is much stronger when we are together are not divided. >> kimberly: the message of unity, healthy discussion and debate.

you can put 218 outcome of the majority will rule. we can respect each other in the debate process. >> juan: absolutely. i hope that's the message people take away. i think we need more of it. oftentimes it seems like division and anger rules the day. what it comes down to is i think americans do honor each other. i love it when scalise, he did an interview with "60 minutes" he talked about what the doctors did with him. he said in humorous terms they put humpty dumpty back together again. he described all the damage in the pelvic area. he later had an infection. it took a lot of work and a lot of time. looking at him, knowing him, i can see he has lost weight but i thought he looked much better than i would ever have guessed. i thought he was going to look like a shell. it looks like steve steve scals still in there. >> dana: he is a good majority

after health care failed again, it has many asking if president trump will be able to get his agenda through congress. rush limbaugh says no. here's why. because they don't want trump to succeed. with his agenda, they can't afford it. i'm not exaggerating here. they don't want -- they can't afford for him to succeed with his agenda. they can't afford it. the lead is blown. the gig is over. the joke is revealed. if an outsider with no prior political experience can come in and fix messes, how does that make them look? they can't allow it to happen. >> juan: there is rush limbaugh, probably the loudest voice on the right saying mitch mcconnell, paul ryan.

other hand, i think republicans in congress are saying where is the leadership from the white house? normally the president would take the lead on something like health care but president trump doesn't get involved in the details and leave that to congress. at this moment he wants to blame them for not getting it done. >> jesse: congress did repeal obamacare so i'm not sure how much we can blame paul ryan. there is other stuff you can blame him for, not bad. that falls on mcconnell in the senate. trump is going to be very aggressive pushing tax reform. you can see that and a bunch of speeches he has prepared to make all over the country. on the rush thing, i'm going to say rush is right. i don't know if people want to see trump fail because they are sloppy and discombobulated and can't get things through the senate or there's a lot of people that are resisting him because they resisted him in the primary. people resisted him in his own party and the general election. they were more concerned about

conserving their congressional majorities. then you have leaks. you have the rush investigation. obama repeal failed. there's a lot of suspicions out there about the establishment. i think trump's biggest kryptonite right now is inaction. he is such a man of action. he's constantly moving. the voters wanted action. they voted for republicans to control both houses. they voted for a republican in the white house. they want to get things done. when things stall and it returns the senate, it drives the president crazy. that's why you see him trying to lay with nancy and crying chuck. >> juan: dana i'm going to wait for you to respond and then i'm going to interrupt you. itunes killed albums. now you can get as much as you want whenever you want. it is changing people. i think it's turning teenagers into their own hugh hefners. you are having a jaded generation more inclined to the easy access of pornography than meeting someone and dating someone. physical attraction was supposed to get you outside to meet somebody, marry somebody. it's like if they invented a food they didn't have any calories but it tasted just like food and so you ate that food. over time, your species would die. that's what's happened. >> kimberly: like kale? >> greg: like kale. humans are becoming more and more inhumane when it comes to physical attraction because they don't need to go out and meet someone. we don't like talking about it but it's affecting families. it's affecting marriages. if you talk to any priest or parent, they will tell you it's a big problem because the biggest vulnerability to monogamy is novelty.
