famous liberal, i'm conservative we used to have debates on the bus and the team would listen in but once you get in between the lines it was all gone. you could have these conversations but doing it out in the spotlight using your platform to advance political agendas that gets under under the scheme of the teammates. >> abby: leave it off the field. so many great things he said if you don't have respect for yourself you don't have respect for anyone else around you. you doing that interview pete was lick a little girl at like a boy band concert. >> pete: which interview? >> abby: with how holts. you were so excited to interview him it was great. we have other headlines we're following i want to bring you starting with a police officer murdered and ambushed 29 year old kristin hern seen shot and killed while responding to a suspicious vehicle call in georgia. this man and a woman coming out of the woods approaching the officer as the man opening fire and killing detective hern. she leaves behind a husband and a three year old son. >> abby: and the out of control violence in chicago revving up again for the weekend this time
6:12 am
nine people shot, two killed in just seven hours overnight. it is the newest round of violence in that city plagued with crime as we know. just two weekends there were 30 shootings that left 11 people dead. those incidents adding to the 500 homicides already committed in the year 2017. >> pete: the list continues to turn away the federal government >> abby: also this oj simpson wants to go to florida once he gets out of prison but florida don't want him. the state attorney general sending a letter to the florida department of corrections instructing them to tell nevada authorities that florida objects to simpson serving his parole there. the state is where simpson's financial team has been shield ing his assets. the juice was convicted of robbery and kidnapping in nevada in 2008 and he could walk free as early as monday. >> abby: also the nfl anthem protest sparking new rules for high school sports and now some student athletes in in louisiana and a member of the school club says stand for the national anthem or face consequences. the superintendent who created the directives joined us earlier
6:13 am
and here is what he said. >> never in my wildest imagination would i have thought that actually requiring our student athletes to stand for something so reverent as our national anthem, we stand for that flag. we stand for our country. we stand for our veterans. >> abby: yes we do. well some schools with are taking a similar approach like this one in illinois by walking on to a field with officers. >> pete: maybe the nfl could learn from high school football players. health and human services secretary tom price is out following his outrage over use of private planes so whose taking his place and what happens next? ellison barber live from washington coming up next. >> todd: as the anthem protests continue how do the vets feel? one veteran also a member of congress, congressman duncan hunter joins us up early in california coming up.

does your bed do that? oh. i don't actually talk. though i'm smart enough to. i'm the new sleep number 360 smart bed. let's meet at a sleep number store. hi. so i just got off the phone with our allstate agent, and i know that we have accident forgiveness. so the incredibly minor accident that i had tonight... four weeks without the car. okay, yep. good night. with accident forgiveness, your rates won't go up just because of an accident. switching to allstate is worth it.
6:17 am
>> pete: welcome back to fox & friends. more big news out of washington yesterday. former now former health and human services secretary tom price tendering his resignation to the president and the president accepting it immediately. >> abby: there are reports that said the president was going to make a decision last night so i think this was him saying i'm just going to resign because the president was asked about this a couple days ago about the fact that he has spent over a million dollars according to some reports on flights to get to what he said it was within protocol but as trump has said the number of times this is part of the swamp that i don't want to be anywhere near and so someone asked him what will you do about your health and human services secretary he gave that classic trump look. and he said we'll see. >> todd: there's a definite segment in society i'll put myself in this group that wants everybody in that swamp known as d.c. to account for every single dollar they spend of our taxpayer money, regardless of party republican democrat other it doesn't matter. if i'm giving you my hard earned
6:18 am
taxpayer dollars, i want you to account for that and that is not this. we had corey lewandowski on earlier echoing those same sentiments. >> we have not seen the repeal and replace done. tom price was the point on that but i don't think that's the reason the repeal and replace not being repealed is the reason tom price is out. tom price is out because he wasted taxpayer money and the president said it will not be tolerated. he spends taxpayer money like it's his own. we have seen him renegotiate things time and time again and if a cabinet member or any other member of this administration is going to waste taxpayer money, they're not going to have a place in the government any more >> pete: especially when you came in as an outsider businessman, he's found a lot of places already to save money for the government, he cites sites the f35, the air force one, wherever he is focused let's get it under budget and on time and you see a cabinet secretary doing this and also the one who couldn't get repeal and replace of obamacare. add all that up and you're fired >> abby: and you talk about tax
6:19 am
reform and how we are focused on that forgotten man getting more money into your wallet. this is not sitting very well. ultimately president trump wants people on his team that get results and this was not leading to that, so anyway the first cabinet member to resign. >> pete: tom price good man but moving on. >> todd: speaking of moving on as anthem protests continue how do the vets feel? one veteran also a member of congress duncan hunter joins us live coming up. >> abby: the protest spilling over into youth football leagues , so how should you talk to your kids about this whole controversy? our panel of moms weighing in after this. with my moderate to severe crohn's disease,... ...i was always searching for ways to manage my symptoms. i thought i had it covered. then i realized managing was all i was doing. when i finally told my doctor, he said humira was for people like me who have tried other medications,...

>> pete: 22 minutes after the hour and quick headlines on your saturday morning. a union leader for the las vegas police demanding an apology from nfl player michael bennett after plea police officers were clear ed of any wrongdoing after detaining the seattle seahawks defensive end out sigh a casino last month and it claimed one officer pointed a gun at him threatening to blow his head off . protesters in st. louis now an anti-cop banner right in the middle of a st. louis cardinals game. >> no justice, no baseball. >> pete: the protest then spilling outside of busch stadium, the latest demonstrations come two weeks after a former officer was acquitted in the shooting death of a blackman. and the justice department now charging 3800 alleged gang members in the u.s. and central america including members of ms 13 and one of their main leaders. more than 70 of those defendants living in six u.s. states including california, new york, and ohio.
6:24 am
pete over to you. >> pete: thanks, todd. well president trump standing behind our american flag sending a message of patriotism in the wake of the nfl player's protesting our national anthem. >> president trump: the soul of a country is found in the people who make it a home. we can build this future together as one team, one people , and one great american family. we love our american flag. >> abby: yes we do so when will these plays realize we're all on the same team? here to react is california congressman and iraq and afghanistan war veteran representative duncan hunter great to have you with us. great to be with you guys i was there with pete. >> abby: you were and i know you guys go way back and know each other. this message though that we heard from the president of being together, being one team when i think about that i actually think first and foremost about our military, because that is what they teach you before you go out to battle is you're all in this together. you've got to help your brother help each other out. you have to and i've been at
6:25 am
these ceremonies where they drape the flag over the casket, it was in afghanistan a couple years ago, you watch that ceremony and you kneel in the c 130 with the casket there, the flag draped coffin, and i've also been here whereas a congressman i've given that folded flag to a gold star mom or a galled star wife or someone that's lost their son or husband in combat and iraq or afghanistan and what the flag means to that mom or to that wife or that spouse and what that flag means draped over that coffin, i think that our nfl players need to be educated. i think that's what this is, down at its basis form, i don't think they understand most military or most nfl players have no mind for military service. they're not going to do it. they're talented, well paid they work hard but they don't understand what the flag means and they don't realize they're disrespected even here in san diego our sports radio guys and i watch espn and i love football , i love sports.
6:26 am
they don't understand the audience of guys like me of people like me that know what the flag stands for, know what the anthem stands for, and they're turning us off. that's what's happening right now. >> pete: duncan why has the flag become political? >> oh, that's a great question, pete. i think from the nfl players, what they say is it represents all the bad things about america that's what they say. i think that that was a false narrative created by the liberal s when this whole thing first started, because they don't have the education that they need to realize the flag is what we follow into battle. that's what the flag stands for. it doesn't stand for slavery. it doesn't stand for civil rights abuses. it doesn't stand for what we did to the native americans when we first came here. christopher columbus did for god sakes. what it stands for is what america means to guys like me and you and the millions of people that have given their lives for this country and all the wars we've had that's what we follow into battle. that's what we give the wife that lost her husband and what we give the mom that lost her
6:27 am
son or daughter. that's what it means and the players just don't get it. >> abby: and the lives that continue to be lost fighting for all of our freedom to be able to do what we do. it's such an important issue. i want your thoughts quickly on pardoning patrol agents this is something you're passionate about and something you put a request in for? >> yeah, ramos got put in jail and got 10 and 11 years of jail for chasing down a drug dealer who the department of justice then gave immunity to the drug dealer that had over 700 pounds of marijuana who got shot in the bottom, got shot in the rear end , the border patrol agents went to jail. the drug smuggler got immunity by our department of justice who he then got put in jail for nine years for drinking drugs back across. president bush commuted their sentence in his last day in office but they're still considered criminals and after i watched president trump pardon joe arpaio i think he had to do the same thing for ramos and
6:28 am
they're not able to vote. they can't buy a weapon. they can't enter into federal service even after serving honorably in the border patrol in my opinion so i think that it's a good thing for trump to look at and it would go right along with his pardoning of joe arpaio. >> pete: if there's anyone taking a look at a pardon of former border patrol agents it certainly is as president and you know how much matters what happens after the fact the legacy of your actions matter so the president will take a hard look at your request. duncan hunter congressman from california thanks for your time. >> abby: for waking up so early in california. he's in san diego, so i don't feel too bad for him. >> abby: coming up in high school, coming up high school kids they're most focused on cars sports and graduation but not for this teenager whose now running for governor. the potential gop nominee will join us next. >> pete: awesome and the anthem protest spilling over into youth football league so how should you talk to your kids about the anthem controversy? our panel of moms weighs in
6:33 am
avenue in new york city, well the protesting of our national anthem is filtering down into the schools last week an entire youth football team players age 7 & 8 took a knee during the anthem and on monday a california school district the honor band played the anthem on one knee before the oakland baseball game there and earlier in the show we told you about the louisiana school district requiring student athletes to stand during the anthem. this of course as a youth league in texas is avoiding the controversy altogether by canceling the anthem before their games. here to share their thoughts a panel of politically active moms i'm so excited to get all of your take on this. this is what the country has been talking about. we want to hear how you've been talking about it and your kids just quickly how many of you have kids that play in sports right now? okay, well beth let's start with you. you said you have a son that plays football. >> i do. a son whose a junior in high school and he plays football and absolutely it has been conversation over the last few weeks especially because we also
6:34 am
went to the buffalo bills football game last sunday, and there was a lot of controversy at the game. you know, what we talk about is there was a time in our country where the older generation actually taught the younger generation how to show respect and that's not being done any more. we have an entire generation that's instead of acting and doing what's right, they're acting on their feelings and you know, we just it's not respectful. it's not honorable. we don't believe that it's the right thing to do. we need to show respect for our country and my son absolutely believes that way also. >> abby: respect for that flag. you also have a son that's a freshman right playing football. >> at this very minute he's playing. >> abby: so i'm sure you've had these conversations with him. how do those go? >> i have two sons one is ninth grade and the other is in college and of course i'm a professor and this is one of the most heated exchanges we had all semester. we start out every class talking about what's going on in the world of politics and this is the heated exchanges we've had
6:35 am
among college students and for my son he's really torn by this issue. he is a huge new england patriot s fan and when he saw tom brady and the others lock hands and he saw people go down on their knees he's also a very patriotic person who supported donald trump and so he felt very torn by this entire issue because on the one hand he wants to support the players and the teams and he's sensitive to the racial inequality issues and on the other hand he feels like there should be respect and he's at a private catholic school where they instill that in him so a lot of the young men it's very big football program feels similarly torn by this issue and they want to support their brothers on the field and they also want to be patriotic and they are going to be sensitive to these racial issues that they feel are part of their generation and what they are experiencing. >> abby: we want that patriotism as part of our next generation. kathy your kids are home schooled and it doesn't mean they're not talking about this. >> they are. you know and as a black mother when i look into the eyes of my
6:36 am
black children, everything within me wants to instill in them that they are limitless, that they are fearfully and wonderfully made that they have actually been knitted together with purpose so how is it for parents, for a certain group of parents to in grain in their children that because you're black in america, you will be oppressed? that's a false narrative to begin with, but how bleak is that that that is the narrative, that because you're black, because of the color of your skin, you will be considered less than. you will be considered to be oppressed in some fashion and not only is it bleak but it's an oppressive cloud that will hang over the heads of these little impressionable souls, all the days of their lives so as a mother when i look into the eyes of my black children i want to instill in them that in america, the great equalizer is the willingness to educate yourself and the willingness to work hard for what it is that you want and
6:37 am
you can achieve anything here. >> abby: there does seem to be this misconception today you're speaking to kathy that if you are not supporting kneeling during the national anthem that you then do not support racial equality, right? that you are against blacks getting what everyone deserves. is that fair? >> do you know what, abbey? this weighs heavily on me. my dad played for 11 years in the major league baseball and founded the major league baseball players alumni association so this is definitely something that hits home for me and what i would tell my children is to consider the original intent, outlined by colin kaepernick which was to i would ask them to consider which group is the most effective at raising awareness of issues of ongoing social injustice and oppression and history is biblical so as history considers colin kaepernick in the ripple
6:38 am
effects held by this particular protest how would history look upon him and when should you speak up, when should you speak out? >> abby: how do you feel about that? >> i agree. i think that colin kaepernick is a hero and-- >> abby: you do? i do and as i talk to i see the giants and the jets as my patients and as i talk to them and i talk to my daughter i do think that what they're doing is taking a knee against racial in equality and against police brutality and that's i believe what colin kaepernick intended and then i looked at the flag code and the flag code says you can't wear a flag on your t-shirt or put the flag horizontal. it doesn't say anything about taking a knee and that being disrespectful. my husband is an ex-captain in the army. my father in law is a vet. i have many many members that are very patriotic in my family. we do believe in patriotism but i do think the intent and the spirit is just too equalize. this is about equalizing and that is their platform and i agree with what tiffany was saying about this is their platform and they want to broadcast to the world. >> abby: kim i know you want to
6:39 am
jump in. i want to get everyone's voice here. go ahead. >> i don't disagree that every child should have the ability to express who they are and what they want to express. i think that message has gotten muttled. we have a young man in my daughter's school who won't stand for the pledge of allegiance and when asked about it he said because i don't have to because the football players don't. i don't think he understood what the background and purpose was and it comes off as being anti- patriotic and i guess my point is to the hipocracy that we talked about earlier. if it's okay for students to take a stand on racial inequality and it absolutely is, it's their perogative to do that then they should also be able to take a knee and pray before a game. they should also be able to express themselves however they want to. my one caveat with my own daughter is got to understand what you're doing and you have to do it for a purpose not just because other people are doing it. >> abby: that's great advice. yeah mean go ahead. >> well the nfl is alienating
6:40 am
their fan base and you'll see-- >> abby: we've seen that and seen the ratings and now we're seeing they're not kneeling as much and that's for a reason obviously. >> and people are speaking with their wallets. people spend thousands of dollars to be entertained. they don't want to be lectured to and see all these protests that are going on. they should do these protests on their own time. there's another place and time to do so. as for the children, i think is really unfortunate that they are being miss guided by adults and people they look up to. i'm old school. you stand up, you take off your hat put your hand over your heart and honor or country honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice and honor those who are serving in the military today. >> abby: absolutely it sends a bigger message rebecca that we can protest and we can have free speech and stand up in what we believe in but we should not disrespect the pledge of allegiance and the flag as one of those. >> hand on heart this is our one tradition abbey we all share as americans and remember what that anthem is about.
6:41 am
it's about an aching doubt, a prisoner in baltimore harbor and you wonder is our flag still there? did they survive? it's about doubt. you don't have to believe 100%. america doesn't have to be perfect for you and me and all of us to find enough good to put our hands-on our hearts for two minutes and an f22 pilot over syria flies an eight hour mission we can put our hands over our hearts for two minutes and respect our beloved flag. >> abby: i can't help but think about our military members serving overseas right now in places like kabul, spending that time watching sports their favorite times of the day and what they think about all this playing out guys thank you so much, ladies for your perspective also really appreciate that. >> thank you, abbey. >> abby: coming up most high school kids are focused on cars, sports and graduation but this kid is running, yes running for governor of the state of kansas as a republican. the potential gop nominee is going to join us live i can not wait for that up next. but first let's check in with
6:42 am
neil cavuto for a look at what's coming up on the cost of freedom business book. >> neil: guys good morning well president trump wants to make the tax code simpler, does he need to settle it? then for everyone trying to turn maria into president trump's katrina, they clearly didn't hear what puerto rico's governor just told me. and it nfl players can protest red, white and blue so many say nfl stadiums can give up all of the taxpayer green. see you soon.
6:45 am
>> abby: we are back with the fox news alert, diplomacy still on the table for the nuclear crisis with north korea u.s. secretary of state rex tillerson saying just moments ago that there is a line of communication with the rogue nation and they are looking for talking. tillerson and china president meeting just a short time ago. this all happening ahead of president trump's trip to china and other asian countries next month. that's really important stuff.
6:46 am
>> pete: the secretary of state using that and now a fox news alert right now ships in puerto rico bringing much needed supplies to the hard hit island, people there now bracing for even more rain after being battered by two hurricanes. >> todd: rick richmuth keeping an eye on the situation what do we know right now? >> rick: more rain coming in today. we can have tropical activity any month of the year but hurricane season starts the end of june until the end of november but it peaks up here at about september 10 when we were seeing irma going and all of the activity we're having now, we are getting on the downhill slide which is good but the water is incredibly warm abnormally warm waters across parts of the caribbean so any time we see something we think something could develop or we see this shower activity. i don't think we'll see development of a tropical system from this. that said a lot of tropical moisture going in towards puerto rico so the next couple days bring some big showers and some of these showers from time to time might be heavy and we could see some isolated spots now our models even putting up to eight
6:47 am
inches of rain so that would be problematic obviously and its relief efforts are underway making it harder to get through these roads that are impassable. also watching the system across parts of florida i don't think we'll see development of this but we are seeing pretty significant rainfall especially the northern part of florida throughout the next couple of days some spots up to eight inches of rain. guys? >> abby: all right thank you, rick. >> rick: you bet. >> pete: we've been updating you all morning long on puerto rico trying to get the facts on the ground but the so-called mainstream media if you were to change the channel and take a look they've taken no time in trying to politicize this tragedy. here is the sound of what we've been seeing. do you have a sense that the response from the federal government or maybe the response would have been stronger if you'd been a state? >> maybe it's because they didn't care. maybe it's because this wasn't a priority? >> there's 3.5 million americans in puerto rico and the president was really preoccupied with trying to make a racial issue out of the nfl while he wasn't
6:48 am
doing anything about that. this is what liberals in news rooms do to republican presidents. they did it to george w. bush, doing it now to president trump and it shouldn't be why is this an anti-trump story right now and why is this not a story about what's happening on the ground the logistics, the bureaucracy trying to help these people? >> abby: we still don't have a back so the president is on the ground on fuss getting a much better assessment of what's going on but some of the media are talking about how this might impact an election. they say as puerto rico slips deeper into what many call we can scroll that out the article. >> pete: call it a humanitarian crisis. >> abby: following hurricane maria the island is primed for a mass exodus for what could be 1 million people a number of whom are expected to settle in the state of florida the nations biggest swing state that could prove to be a boone to democrats >> pete: geraldo has been on the ground, we've seen ships coming in in the background with supplies i wonder how many stories there will be about the number of supplies.
6:49 am
>> todd: how many jones act stories will we talk about which for those of you that don't know basically the jones act says it doesn't have to be an american ship that brings things to puerto rico right now. it could be from any country. >> pete: they've suspended the jones act. and we saw on our air just a few moments ago a ship i don't know if it's american or other coming in delivering what appears to be supplies so to say the president is doing nothing to attack him at this point in time is unreal. we've heard sort of differing opinions there in puerto rico, the governor of puerto rico said doing a great job. we really are getting what we need we appreciate the help. the mayor of san juan disagrees with that. >> pete: he looks like a story in search of evidence so now the reporter will descend on the island looking for every bad news story to make the president look bad. >> todd: it sounds like something familiar pete. begins with an r. >> pete: and rhymes with russia? >> todd: it's true. they find narratives pursue them be careful as viewers as you watch this story. how it's being emphasized who
6:50 am
they're playing as good guys and bad guys republicans and democrats. >> abby: and watch geraldo rivera whose been covering this for us doing a phenomenal job on the ground giving people a sense of what's really happening and how dire that situation is but i can imagine president trump is not sitting there saying i don't want to do everything i can to help. that's his job. your number one job as president of all the hats you wear is to protect the people you serve. >> pete: he's been on twitter all morning tweeting about this so coming up, those high school kids are focused on cars sports and graduation but this kid is running for the governor of kansas. don't call him a kid he might be your governor running as a republican. the potential gop nominee joins us live, next. hi.

>> abby: at 17 most kids are focused on a drivers license the latest trends and of course graduating high school. >> pete: not for this teen tyler just became the second count him second high schooler to join the race for kansas governor and the first running as a republican. >> todd: joining us now with his story and his 2018 campaign platform is tyler rusick. thank you very much for joining us this morning so you're on ap and honor roll student member of the debate team been on student council for three years got a resume that reads like someone could run for governor. where did you come up with the idea? >> well you know, i've been a great friend of jack ferguson for a while a few years, the teen running as a democrat in wichita and i think what we came together, we both knew we had a love for debate, politics and government and when i found out that he was running and he gotten in touch with me, one of
6:55 am
the first things he told me is that tyler, you've got to run. you've got to run as a republican. you've got to get young people excited about this election and so it's really i think a bipartisan decision both young people from their republican and democratic parties to get young people involved in this political campaign and this election, and i think that's a great thing so it's really jack and my love for politics and government that drove me to run. >> abby: we need more of that bipartisanship so if people are wondering you're running for governor in the state of kansas there's no age limit so it's totally legal for you to run for governor. i think we're all curious because both parents are bernie sanders supporters right? >> yes, they are. >> abby: how do they feel about you running as a republican candidate? >> well you know, the great thing is that they've always encouraged me to explore new ideas, read literature that challenges my current views whether it was reading the
6:56 am
fountain head or something it really doesn't matter what the viewpoint is the literature, the books i read, the media that i watch, wherever it may come from they've always emphasized that it's important to get different viewpoints because they want me to make a genuine and educated decision and quite frankly even though they are a lot more progressive than i am, they are supporting what i'm doing and are so happy i'm making a genuine and honest decision running as a republican. >> pete: what's your website if folks want to check out your site? >> we're still getting that developed. >> pete: how about-face book? >> on facebook that's still coming in hopefully an instagram page. >> abby: good luck. all right more after this. 's ok that everybody ignores me when i drive. it's fine, 'cause i get a safe driving bonus check every six months i'm accident-free. and i don't share it with mom. right, mom? right. safe driving bonus checks,
