the deadliest mass shooting in modern u.s. history. and just a short time ago, vegas police and the atf held a news conference, it was fascinating to disclose what they have learned so far about the arsenal stephen paddock had at his disposal. what they have uncovered? nothing short of astounding. at the same time there is another mass operation underway in town aimed at keeping the death toll from climbing any higher. with us from the university of medical center, jonathan hunt. how are doctors they are kind of fairing tonight with so many patients on their books? many of whom we know remaining critical or severe condition. >> it is a tough and emotional task for all of the doctors involved. and just a short time ago we confirmed grim news with sunrise hospital that one of the patients they are in critical condition has died tonight. that leads 31 patients in critical condition at sunrise.

another 12 in critical condition here at university medical center. we have been talking as well to the surgeons who have been working day and night since the attack. and the grim work that they have been doing. it is so tough for them. we talked to one surgeon who told us that all of the staff have experienced so much over so many years, but they have never experienced anything like this. and there horrific sites that they saw as the patients were wheeled in one after another. that surgeon, a very experienced man himself told me in the calm, kind of tones that you really used to do when you talk to these kind of heroes, that despite their experiences, many of the staff at hospitals across las vegas are clearly going to need their own psychological counseling. listen here. >> the stress seen at the time of treatment in the form of anxiety or loss of focus, and

that can be easily corrected. but the unconscious forms of stress are things that affect people in the second or third day. and we have debriefing teams going through the hospital. offering services to the staff. >> we've also been hearing more stories of heroism, for instance, the story of three off-duty firefighters who attended the concert as friends. they were enjoying themselves, and then they heard the gunfire starting to ring out when they realized what was happening, they looked at each other and said, we've got to get to work. they set up their own triage unit. and according to officials, they saved lives. we are also learning more today, trace, about the weapons and why stephen paddock was able to kill and maim so many. according to the atf around a dozen of the weapons in side that hotel have been rigged with what is called a bump stock.

otherwise known as a slide fire. it is a device that modifies the shoulder rest in order to pull almost constantly, mimicking the effect of a fully automatic weapon. now the atf sources also told us that you can find the components to do that and the advice on how to do it very easily on the internet. we have seen videos from a company called -- and we do not know which company stephen paddock may have gone to to get the expertise on how to do that or to buy the components, but it is an example of what you can find very easily on the internet. according to the atf source, and i am quoting here, in layman's terms, it turns a semiautomatic rifle into a machine gun. it is a horrific thought. and we have seen of course there

horrific effects of the weaponr weaponry. that he had with him in the room at the mandalay bay hotel. >> trace: the chief correspondent live for us at university of medical center. thank you. and clarification as to jonathan was saying, the bump stock is legal, because it does not alter the weapon itself. it mimics a constantly pulled the trigger. he was talking about the death toll, just so we're clear, we are saying 59, and we added one more. the coroner came out earlier saying, here's the deal, it was 59, plus the shooter. so 58 plus the shooter, at 59, so now we know that there are 59 victims, one more pass away tonight. let's bring in caroline shively, near the scene of the shooting at the mandalay bay hotel and casino. and the whole thing here is that we know we learned a great deal at tonight's news conference. >> an amazing amount of information coming out tonight, trace, from the sheriffs

department as well as the fbi. i want to unpack some of the information. we have been talking about the cameras that the gunman had counted outside his room. more details about that. the two cameras mounted outside the room, a third in the peephole of the door leading to the suite, all put there by the gunmen. the purpose of that was so that he could watch down the hall to see when authorities were closing in. here's what undersheriff had to say. >> it was a very horrible work work -- heroic security guard. he went on to the room, he was advancing towards the room when the suspect fired through the door at the security guard and struck him. he was able to provide additional information to the police on exactly which room we were looking at. >> definitely a sign of heroism with the security guard. he was able to provide information to the s.w.a.t. team and officers so that they could come in and reach that door with

explosives into get into the hotel room. also information coming from the fbi, joe snyder, special agent in charge coming out of san francisco giving us a count of the guns that they have foune shooter's holmes, 47 firearms have been found in his room and his home. at 23 guns found inside that hotel room, the fbi still trying to figure out which of those guns were actually used in the shooting. on the concert victims. also out here, we have seen some movement. this is still an active crime scene. earlier today we saw a fbi cleanup crews that were going around. we were talking last night, trace, about the personal items. you produce issues, necklaces, things dropped here is 20,000 plus people pushed through fences trying to get to safety. the fbi is picking up some of those cowboy boots and personal items trying to get back to the victims and the families of those victims who did not make it out alive.

also tonight we have seen some movement from the police officers. people wanting to get back in here. they had to run for their lives, they were not able to get their vehicles out. the police officers escorting folks in one by one so that they are able to remove their vehicles tonight. >> trace: yeah, and some of those cars had bloodied handprints on them and both the lament blood he footprints as they walked away. caroline shively life for us in las vegas. caroline, thank much. well, a tragedy of the scale will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the community in which it happen. the next guest can give us some perspective on what that impact might be. with us now is the las vegas councilman, a retired captain of the metropolitan police department and i guess you are kind of working both sides of the fence. you can give us the hook perspective. it is amazing to me to see the video, the body camera video we saw tonight of your former colleague being in action in

taking people away from the danger and then trying to figure out where the shots were coming from. when you see that coming you have to be heartened by the actions of your former colleagues. >> i will tell you, the last 48 hours here have been chaos and destruction. to have our first responders respond the way that they did, the police officers, the firefighters, the paramedics to go in there and their sole objective was to save lives and stop the shooter, i am very, very proud of them. and at this point, things are settling down. people are beginning to breathe a little bit. our injured are getting some great medical care. we just had a prayer vigil up in the western part of north bank of the valley where 10 miles from the strip were regular citizens of this community came together with our faith-based leaders, myself and the commissioner put it together. and we had two or 300 residents

come out and pray for the men and women that have died, prayed for the ones that are still injured. and pray for our first responders for what they did. this community is finally coming together. >> trace: it really is great to see. i want you to put your political hat on for me. because there has been a lot of questions about security of las vegas. the very idea that they look at 23 weapons inside this room. and they had dozens or dozens of suitcases filled with ammunition. it gives me pause to think, is there a change that is coming? councilman, of what las vegas needs to do to secure the casinos? or is this something that's coming you know, it is one of those things that you have to expect to have some kind of dangers when you have this many tourists coming to your city every year? >> when you look at las vegas, we are one of the safest tourist destinations in the world. we have 40 million people coming here every day.

the concert that we had a couple of days ago, we have had thousands of events like that. they are all safe. there aren't any problems. we staff them correctly. we learn from small incidents that occurred. we really do not have any problems, but obviously, this is a major event. a lot of lives were lost. and of course we will take a look at it and find out why this happened. what can we do to make changes? we are always taking a look at making las vegas a safe destination for visitors to come to. we are going to do an after action report. we are going to take a look at it. but this is -- we are going i'm not sure that we could have prevented something like this. >> trace: las vegas, nobody does it better than las vegas. we haveing that for years and years, nobody puts on a better convention, or people have more in fun in a city like las vegas. thank you, sir.

>> thank you for having me. spiritually pulp is a longtime fan of jason aldean, the headliner of sunday's concert, she decided to see him sunday and put las vegas, but got up in the scene that unfolded. she joins us here in las vegas. i was kind of reading your story. it is amazing. to take me through when the shots first happen. where did you go and what did you think? >> originally i was safe on the right side facing the stage, and i was four seats from the stage that comes out into the audience paid in about ten or 15 seats from the main stage. and jason was singing, he had walked back to the stage and he was turned towards -- when we heard the noise, the pop, pop, pop, he was looking at that. and he started to sing and again. and he took his microphone down. and there was a panicked look on

his face. and when we saw dad, everybody hit the ground. it was really horrific. because at first, we just thought it was or fireworks. and when we realized it was real, we had to get down and save ourselves. >> trace: you cannot see, we are showing some of the video now, and you were taken over to the tropicana. you were escorted over there. and i was reading this, i'm sure your daughter was still back there. >> no, no, actually i thought she was. but i found out that she was at the tropicana. >> trace: so she was there first. and you saw her there at tropicana, how elated were you? >> i was thrilled when i saw on the phone that she was there. because i would not have left the venue without finding her. i'm just that way. but i was on the phone, i had --

i was covering a couple of people underneath me. and my back was against the shooter. i never looked around, because i knew that a lot of people were getting shot. i was afraid to lift my head up, because i was afraid that i would get my head shot off. but i did tell the people under me that we cannot stay like this. we had to crawl out or run out. so they agreed. i wanted to warn them, because i would not be covering them anymore. and -- as soon as i said that, i got up to run. and when i got up to run. the fire -- the shots stopped. but it started up immediately. and when it started up again, i hit the ground again. but my feet, my sandals were off of my feet. and just around my ankles. so i had to put my shoes on to run anyway. because they were hanging off of my ankles. >> trace: your son is a

las vegas metro police officer. >> yes, sir, he is. >> trace: you were in contact with him quickly? >> he was at the mandalay bay. he was one of the first responding squad that was there. he was on duty that night. and i know that he knew that tina and i were at the concert. so when he heard shots, naturally he is going to be one of the first responders. but he was there. and i knew that. but it is like i said, the shots were just horrific and i did not realize that i have locked myself in. there was a fence in front of me. so i had to climb over the fence. when i got to the fence, there was a dead girl there. that was very sad. i was so emotional. but you know, i have to tell everybody that when you are in something like this, i think -- i've gone through a lot of traumatic experiences in my life. but i think what happens is your body goes into survivor mode.

and you just act. you don't really think. you just do what you think you are supposed to do. and it does not seem real. it did not seem real to me until i saw the dead girl. and when i tumbled over the fence and walked to the blue tarp, which was in the middle of the concert, there was another dead person there. it was a security guard. >> trace: you saw a heartrending, horrifying situation. we are so glad that you will, your family, your son the first responder, our best to him and your daughter were safe. at the best to you. >> thank you so much. yes, i did not know exactly what you wanted me to tell. i would tell the whole story. but it is a long story. and it was a long night. but i am so thankful i am alive. i am so sorry for the ones that died. and my best goes out to their families. and i hope that all the

[gunshots] spill and just amazing to watch the first responders, the officers moving in to stop the carnage. it took 9-11 minutes before the gunfire ended. the officials told us that he got about a dozen volleys off, meaning thousands of shots into the crowd. with us now is joe peters, a counterterrorism expert and a former police officer. and to joe, when you hear that there were 23 weapons inside the hotel room and there were 12 bump stock, that is an immense amount of firepower. >> as a former police officer and a chief and then working counterterrorism in the white house, it makes me wonder why no one saw any of that in the room or no one saw the perpetrator carrying those things. whether it was multiple trips,

disguised, it is unusual. and we need to engage hotel employees, one of the great sources of information for us. people who work in these venues, whether it is a doorman, a front desk clerk, people delivering room service, they are great people. they are very astute at individuals, and somebody working with them, we have just force multiplied our source in. >> trace: you made a good point. they said that the maid service within the room every day. to the shooter was in the room for four days, he brought 23 weapons, and the maids were in there. he had three cameras set up in there. and the maids were in there, and there was never any alarm bells going off at all. i just want to get your opinion on the suspect himself. no ties to religious, political affiliations. no radical, no mental history. what do you make of this guy?

>> trace: he had to learn his planning someplace. and you are right, there are no seeming ties to radicalization, but he was very methodical. not only did he have guns in all of his houses, but he brought the weapons that he wanted to, automatic weapons, bump stock as, he had different vantages. which overlooked the venues. he had video cameras, one out the peephole so that he could see in the hallway and one in the food cart. this was premeditated, certainly. he learned that skill set someplace, and now it is about looking at his computer. he did not seem to have a manifesto. there is rumor of a note to being found with him. what motivated him? is a great question. i have to ask one more, you think, did he act alone? did he do it all alone?

it is a immense amount of work. and he spent sends tens of thos of dollars to the philippines, and there is the girlfriend who is a person of interest. what is that connection telling you? >> the philippines without knowing the companion had been there would send alarm bells, because there are terrorist organizations and recruiting of terrorists in the philippines. but let's take off the table, just for the second, give him the benefit of the doubt that it was for his companion. i do not know that he acted alone. there is so much logistically to move and set up. he needs help. he had a car there and in the car was ammonium nitrate which is an explosive component. does that say that there were others who are going to help him? were there others who would help them set up? did he plan a secondary attack? that is what we have to look for in these situations. we cannot send all of our troops to the incident. we need to hold some back and

learning chilling details about the meticulous planning that went into sunday nights attack. and we are also getting a look inside stephen paddock's room at the mandalay bay hotel. that is where police found 23 weapons including 12 that were attached to devices intended to ensure maximum carnage. and we are also learning that stephen paddock set up cameras inside the room and out in the hallway, in the peephole and on a food-service card. it's not clear if the cameras were transmitting. but investigators say it was likely that stephen paddock was using the cameras to watch people approaching his room. he did fire through the door, shooting a security guard in the leg. tonight we learn that the worst mass shooting in u.s. history lasted 9-11 minutes. >> the person into the police are aware of shots being fired at 10:00, 10:08 and it stops at 10:18. that's a remarkable response.

>> also releasing dramatic footage from a body cam as they reported shots fired. you can see police hunker down. one officer was shot. you can hear them yell, get down, get down. and move by standards out of the way. while it appears that paddock acted alone, his girlfriend is now officially a person of interest. marilou danley left the country before sunday's massacre. fox news has learned that paddock has sent tens of thousands of dollars to the philippines. we know the retired accountants like to gamble, and he was worth millions. the role that money may have played as part of the ongoing search for a motive. while police continue to gather evidence across the crime scene, las vegas is a city in morning the huge billboards are thinking first responders and asking for prayers from the victim. many people are stopping by makeshift memorials leaving candles and cards and quietly reflecting on how precious life is.

i want you to tell me where you were when the gunshots rang out. >> right around the vip area. and it was near the exit of the vip area. >> trace: you saw people running towards you? >> yes, at first we heard the gunshots, we think that they are fireworks, may be the end of the show and vegas is known for having fireworks, but eventually we could tell that they were not fireworks, and people, especially when people started collapsing and falling, and then after that it was chaos. people just started, well, you see, i heard that. and i'm sorry, but i thought -- i just thought it was again, so am i hearing that again? >> nuts the whole thing, you're the second or third person who has he heard the gunfire again, and we should warn our guests that we are playing video, because it has to be startling.

>> yes, i'm not seeing the screen. so i think, am i reliving this again? >> trace: we apologize about that. >> you hear that, and people are collapsing, and some people were dead, and some people were running with gunshots to the stomach, to the leg, and asking for help. replying for help, please, please help me. so i started seeing them and they did not know where to go, and most of them wanted to exit out towards the strip which is close to the exit. and i figured that shots were coming from the side, had not realized that they were coming from up there. but you hear the noise. >> trace: i want to stop you right there, and people do not realize that. put on the screen, this is the lighting of the mandalay bay, because he makes a good point. he is hearing the gunfire, so

how do you tell that there are actually gunshots coming from there. it has to be baffling. >> first of all, it was very hard to even know that it was coming from there. but you start trying to see how -- if it is down here, it would have been a lot faster for them to have gotten -- to be able to be seen or anything. but security was really tight. in here. >> trace: you know we -- it was off site somewhere? >> yes, i was sure that it was not inside. obviously, not 100% sure, but i had a good feeling that it was out there. i do have training. since i was a boy i was in rotc at school. i was a correctional officer, i worked with nasa as well. that help me, and it sounded

like they were up there, they were high up. and eventually you do see it. and you see a gunshots when it starts shooting, a high caliber gun, it may not have the chasers, but it is going to throw fire when it is exiting the gun. >> trace: i have to ask you, because when the gunfire still going, you see people hurt, your first instinct as a human being would be to run, you're trying to help people, -- >> how can i run away when i'm hearing, please help me. at first i could not get to the people, because they were panicking so much that they were, it was like a stampede. you know, when one goes down, everybody is jumping over them. it is hard for that one person to get out. some are not as fast, some are not as young. a lot of people were falling down and getting hurt. all i could do was say, please, calm down. not this way, everybody go that way. from this way, which is the exit here.

and what was concerning was, a lot of people ask me, are you sure? are you sure you are sending us in the right direction? and i said, i'm not 100% sure, but i'm trying to get you as far away from the boulevard in the strip. please just go that way. everybody stay calm, do not panic. and some guys would try to fight me. i would have to use maneuvers to pull them away and pushed him off. keep going, please. and eventually when i was able to get through, the gunshots were still going through, we were still trying to duck and go to the center of the stage, and i started seeing the people and people crying "please help me, please help me. my wife is dead, my wife is shot." and we are all trying to get them. >> trace: you are a good man. there are people who are grateful that you were there that night. israel cabanas, thank you for joining us, sir. we very much appreciate it. 10 minutes of chaos, as bullets rained down from the 32nd floor

as hundreds of people flooded into emergency rooms across las vegas into thousands of doctors and nurses fought to save the victim's with us now, a trauma surgeon and the u.n. fee school of medicine, he treated many of the victims and doctor, the first question is when they start coming in, where in the world do you start? >> well, that is a good question. we had all hands on deck who were prepared for these patients. and it is a matter of treating them as they come through the door. and we had injuries that range from lethal nonsurvival bowl, to walking wounded. and it is about applying the resources and saving as many people as you can. and people in the operating room were triaged, taken back, and we operated and did what we could call damage control on these patients.

>> trace: by all accounts it was great work. but i have heard horror tales about bullet wounds, high caliber bullet wounds. how they are a different animal when it comes to saving people's lives. can you talk about that and the effort that comes into that? >> absolutely, the first patient that i took back when i got inside the cavity, both the chest and abdomen, it was a high-power weapon. it was not your average street weapon, a 9-millimeter, things you see people shot with in urban environments. it was a lot of decapitation, a lot of secondary damage from this bullet traveling through the cavity. it made the surgery that much more difficult and a lot more hemorrhage, a lot more damage. >> trace: when do you know, doctor, that you know you have a lot of people waiting. you have a lot of surgeries left to do. when do you know that someone is just not going to make it? do you know right away? do you have that experience to

say, this is going to be too difficult to bring this patient through? >> you certainly have moments like that, patients on the table that you see things are going south and south quickly. i have to say, fortunately that night, we did not face that. a few patients that did pass away or died in our facility were patients of that had devastating catastrophic injuries. if they had been the only patient coming through the door, they likely would not have made it anyhow. everybody that should have lived, lived. the difference in that night versus a regular night of trauma in our facility was what we were doing on the operating table. this was damage control, it was just, stop the process of dying, control the hemorrhage. we did not need to take the time to close the abdominal cavity. we packed them open with temporary dressings and got them into the icu, because at that time, the most valuable real estate is that operating

table. so we got them off the operating table. come back out to the trauma bay, get the next patient. >> trace: very quickly, doctor, you have to feel for you, because you cannot train for anything like this, because nobody has ever seen anything like this. >> well, yes, that is true. we have had some mass casualties situations in the city, obviously, nothing like this. so, you know, the nature of the job is often that we are making rapid decisions that are predicated in life and death. do hope that you're making the right decision. and we just had to do it a lot that night. fortunately as i said, everybody that should have survived, survived. >> trace: bravo, our hats are off to you doctor, good of you to come on tonight. thank you. >> thank you very much. >> trace: we want to thank everyone for joining us for the live coverage of the deadliest
