paddock to kill 58 concert-goers and wounding hundreds more. dan springer is live in las vegas. reporter: there is still no motive out there. but we are learning more about the shooter's extensive planning. we talked about the note found in his hotel room after they got inside and found his dead body. there were numbers on it. according to cbs news those numbers were a mathematical calculation so he could maximize the number of people killed. he wrote down the distance and the speed of the round to where he had to aim to maximize the carnage. police have no idea what

a petition asking the court to freeze all paddock's assets. his lawyer says he's going to sue paddock and mgm and the concert organizers. kennedy? kennedy: thanks so much, dan. sunday's horrific shooting shook the nation to it core and cast a darkened shadow on the normally lively vegas strip. joining me now, mr. las vegas himself, wayne newton. welcome to the show, wayne. >> thank you, kennedy. kennedy: i know this has been an incredibly tough week for you. las vegas is a place you love so so much. where were you when you found out about the shooting? >> i was coming back from a show in texas. i had flown into los angeles

sunday night. i went to bed. my wife couldn't sleep. so she turned on the television and with all the happenings that were going on, she awakened me, and we sat there and watched it the rest of the night and chartered a plane and came back to vegas the first thing monday morning. kennedy: i can only manage the number of people you know, socialized with and have performed with. did you know anything at the show? >> yes, i did. one of my secretaries was there with her family. the gentleman next to her got shot and succumbed to that bullet. it was a horrendous thing. the community has come together. they are taking things to the hospital for the families of the victims. i visited the hospital myself

yesterday for six hours and was blown away by the efficiency of our medical division, our first responders, our police, even to the point where there were 8 surgeons out at nellis boulevard that came into the trauma center and offered their help. and they accepted. and they were a part of that also in helping save some of the victims. kennedy: seeing people come together in the interviews with survives. and the situation they put themselves in not just with first responders. but civilians who ran back into the venue to help those who had been shot and wound and to honor those who unfortunately like the person who was sitting next to your friend who succumbed to their injuries. and you gracious lido nateed

$ -- you graciously donated $100,000. >> it has been wonderfully accepted and we are honored to be able to do that. so many people have given. people were coming to the hospital and handing blankets out and food. and anything they could to the families of the victims who were still fighting for their life. kennedy: those trying to figure out if their loved ones were a part of the horror. so terrifying for so many who lost touch with their family members. wayne, las vegas is a place where people go to escape. it's a place where people go to have bachelorette parties and conventions. it's the ultimate escapism. how long before las vegas is back on its feet?

>> i think it's getting back very quickly. there are some performers who took an entire week off, which i find nothing wrong with, god bless them. and we'll keep them in our prayers and best wishes also. there are those of us like myself who decided to take one night off and honor and tribute to the people that were killed and injured in that was necessary. but then i felt also that we as performers, we as entertainers, if we had been given any god-given talent at all. it's to be used in positive ways. and the positive ways to do that is to try and bring a moment civility, a couple hours of entertainment, smiles to their face.

kennedy: after meeting with top military commanders president trump made a comment that left everybody scratching their heads. this could be the calm before the storm. reporter: what storm,

mr. president? >> you will find out. kennedy: then he tweeted the president and their administrations have been talking to north korea for 25 years, agreements made and massive amounts of money paid. hasn't worked. agreements violated before the ink was dry, making fools of u s. negotiators. joining us is former congressman jason chaffetz. please use your x-ray vision, your emotional x-ray vision. what was the president talking about when he made this comment? >> nobody knows exactly. it's sort of i begannesque. there was a time in -- it's sort

of reaganesque. there was a time when people thought he might actually pull the trigger. and we were at more peace with ronald reagan than just about any other time. you have a president signaling to the world, i.e., china in particular, we'll pull the trigger if we need to. that's ratcheting it up so there is movement to calm the waters. that's my hope anyway. i think he's priming us a little bit and signaling to the world players. if you have the ability to influence the situation and take down kim jong-un a notch so he doesn't do something stupid, now is the time to do it. the united states is not going to sit by as it did with barack obama and hope one big group hug

would solve the problem. kennedy: clearly a lot of times when the president talks and when he tweets. he's talking to china. it seems like the relationship has been and little more effective and china has bench more amenable to imposing sanctions of their own when it comes to oil and textile exports and bank sanctions that have been loopholes for money laundering to get money and goods into their country. china seems to be tightening the noose. >> i don't believe we are one good package of sanctions away from north korea saying we better slow down. i think there is one language they speak, and that's the might of the military. there has to be some pressure china. we have to be in unison with

japan and south korea. president moon ratcheted it up, too. they are demonstrating that they are able to deliver some strong capability. when they tell you they are going to take out, they tell you they are going to rain destruction on you, we are left with no choice but to believe them. the president is positioning us to position us to do something if needed to protect the united states. less than a day after the las vegas shooting, the democrats refer to them as the so-called compassionate party took the spotlight off the shooting and the victims. >> they say it's inappropriate to be talking about it because it's too soon. maybe it's too soon for you

amendment. this person is the former leader of the democratic party. and if she believes donald trump is a bad leader, i encourage her to show up on the streets with the rest of us who are actually in the resistance, rather than going on the book tour complaining about bernie sanders supporters. show up. use your megaphone. i believe she has the right to do it. just follow your words and actually do it. kennedy: that doesn't pay as much money as being on tv trying to sell a page turner. will republicans have to adore every time she opens her mouth? do you help she writes many sequels to further torpedo the democratic party? >> the republicans should hope

speak of criticizing the president, it seems the late night hosts never miss a chance to hit the commander-in-chief. most of of the time it's funny. but this week it's predictable and nasty. >> he had 10 of them in his room, apparently some of them legally. why is that allowed? i don't know why our so-called leaders allow it to happen. why do we continue to let them allow it to happen. >> just be honest and tell us this is how it is and how it will continue to be. just say we are never going to talk about it. >> gun violence should not be a staple of american life. some say it's too early to talk about gun control. but for the victims last night, it's far too late. kennedy: what do you make of the

predictable, uncreative and manufactured talking points that all of these leftist hosts were employing so insensitively after the tragedy? >> just after 9/11 another horrible situation, so many different hosts took their political beliefs and put them out there in the open. i see this different than others. it was a massacre and nothing is being done. the nra is unwhimming to do things they were willing to do 20 years ago. this is an opportunity for us to sit down and have the conversation. kennedy: katie, should congress have already passed a law this week in the wake of las vegas before we even know the motive of the killer? >> i don't think so. i agree that it's important to have that dialogue. but at the same time, people are

making assumptions and jumping to conclusions about motives we don't understand. clearly with the bump stock there are a lot of things that happened here. why he had so many guns and why he passed so many background checks. these background check laws and gun control laws. are they actually helping anything or are they just making people feel better in the wake of a tragedy. kennedy: i understand the desire to explain this and make sure it never happens again. we just have to be careful to be logical and not react emotionally to something so horrific. ben, we are talking about the constitution. we are talking about the second amendment, and of course these late night hosts are employing their constitutional rights. >> the bump stock conversation is sort of like removing calories from a barbeque chicken

there. and he was very curious. i said, do you really want to know? i said absolutely, i would have played hard off the edge, kept you in the pocket and kept you pinned in and taken out your tight end by jamming him up on the line. and he just smiled and he was like, that's a pretty good game play, they probably should have kept you. for me it's out of character for him. i won't stand up for what he said. it's obviously wrong. any of us would be -- kennedy: there are plenty of women who cover sport and beat writers who know the individual sport. and like you, you played football. that may be one of the things that keep women from coaching. not a lot of women play the sport. >> that was one of the things people said, would they listen to you and did you say sexism?

they knew how heard it was for me to get there. some of the guys would say, oh, my gosh, coach, we thought it was tough for us. but for you. >> they knew everything about me. they knew i played women's football. they knew i played against men. they were excited and supportive. though that comment is something we have to look at and address. i would say it's the exception, not the rule. and that's all i can speak from. kennedy: due think you had to work twice as hard as a woman to get into a sport where very few women have cracked the glass sideline? >> for me i didn't think it as a possibility. kennedy: how did you get the job?

>> i called the cardinals on behalf of myself but not as myself. i was coaching arena football. and someone asked bruce if he could ever seen a female coaching in the nfl. he said the minute a woman can prove she can make these guys better, she'll be hired. so i called him. and i called on behalf of my head coach. i thought it had gotten blown off. about two weeks later i walked into practice and my head coach said you will never guess who i talked to yesterday for about an hour. he was committed to making that change because he had seen or at least liked the idea -- one of the best coaches he will tell you he was ever around was a coach named doc murphy, and she was a receivers coach. the fact that it hasn't gotten

kennedy: hurricane nate bearing down on the gulf coast as we speak. it's packing winds in excess of 85 miles per hour. states of emergency have been declared across much of the region, including gulfport, mississippi. phil, what's happening out there? reporter: we are getting a good outer band of rain from hurricane nate slamming into the sea wall. the curfew is in effect so we are the on ones still outside. emergency operations and the

sheriff said we don't want anyone out. storm surge is the big issue. based on the latest satellite-radar loop showing the storm approaching lands, it does appear the loosely organized center of the storm, you can't call it an eye, it looks like it did crossland as a category one around the mouth of the mississippi river. so it is still approaching the gulf coast with stronger winds, stronger rains. 4-6 inches in much of the gulf coast in mississippi and alabama. nobody really needs to be out in this, that's why the curfew needs to be in effect. according to the spertsds, it's going to get a lot worse. kennedy: that's what you love,

you love living on a razor's edge. it can leap out and swallow you whole. are you terrified? >> i'm not terrified. we are standing far enough away from the wall. but we are keeping a close eye on the standing water. it's about half inch all over the parking lots of this marina. most of of the boats were taken out of here in the last couple days. but one of the big concerns of the emergency management director is that we had 3 big monster category four hurricanes, and this was going to be a category one, and they were afraid everybody would be dismissive of it and not taking precaution. but it's coming ashore now. kennedy: i hope you are taking precaution because i want to see
