markets are the ends of the day, good earnings and other things that could propel this. we are exploring whether this is a time to buy more or get out. fair and balanced on networks. >> jesse: i'm jesse watters with kimberly guilfoyle, juan williams, dana perino, and kennedy. it's 5:00 in new york city and this is "the five" ." tonight, is a resolution coming soon to stop the anthem protest on the football field? nfl owners, players and execs coming together today to iron out how to settle it. president trump has called on the league to suspend players if they kneel during "the star-spangled banner." colin kaepernick started the protest last season. he has filed a grievance against the league claiming that owners

are colluding to keep them out. the nfl and players union issued a joint statement after the meeting, calling it productive. this ingalls player had positive things to say. >> i felt like the meeting went really well. obviously we been invited up here to be able to speak with owners about some of the issues of injustice we have seen in our communities and how we want to use our platforms. we talked about how the owners could come alongside us and we could collectively collaboratively work together to create some change. >> jesse: outside the headquarters, black lives matter demonstrators held a protest of their own. >> take a knee against white supremacy. >> jesse: okay. a two-part question for you, kay

g. white supremacy, didn't know that was taking the kneel protesting. how do you predict this going question marks >> kimberly: it's going to go in the right direction because they want some closure. it's not good for anybody. they made the point and now you can go out and do community outreach and continue to strive on behalf of social justice. express your opinion. that's why this country is so incredible. you can also do the job you are contracted to do and abide by the nfl's rules. leadership needs to head off a crises like this and be there to make sure all sides feel they are being well represented, that their voices are being heard. that people are listing. otherwise, you have sort of this evolution of what was initially supposed to be about police

injustice, police shootings. now you are hearing them spin it, it's a side message which is white supremacy. you've got to kind of figure out and follow the bouncing ball. >> jesse: it looks like the owners are seeing ratings go down, stadiums. i think we have some pictures. not all skids are filled up. that's a problem with attendance. and they want to wrap this up. i'm sure the players want the heat off them as well. do you think that's true? >> juan: i think the players would like some resolution. they don't like being disrespected. they don't like being called so sobs by the president. owners, being told they are afraid of their black players. then of course i think there is resistance even when jerry jones, head of the cowboy says he's going to put in place

rules. quickly the nfl said prior to this meeting today there is no requirement that players stand. they would like them to stand. it's not a requirement. there will be no punishment. i think in today's atmosphere, everybody would like to see some resolution. i disagree with you, by the way. the numbers in terms of ratings and capacity, most stadiums are unchanged. there are some that are down slightly. >> jesse: more our dow that are not. >> juan: most are unchanged. my favorite team, the washington football team. they went from 84% -- >> jesse: ratings are down. >> juan: 84% to 82% at fedexfield. >> kennedy: what if it is 2% next week in the week after that? it starts to add up. >> juan: remember last year colin kaepernick was there starting this controversy. we didn't see it. my point is i think the resolution is along these lines. what you will see is the nfl

saying we are going to invest in commercials, advertising about social justice issues. we're going to back criminal justice reform in congress. we are going to take positive action so it's not just about kneeling but it's about some stance. on that score, hats off to the nfl. >> jesse: speaking of colin kaepernick he was invited to the meeting today and did not show up. >> kennedy: it's interesting because he could be the face of this movement and i agree with kimberly. when you have something like this and you are marching in the same direction, you are going somewhere, we have yet to determine where that is. he should be the face. he should be saying this is our next step. dana, she leaned over as we are watching the video and she said i want to these people to get along. absolutely. these football players are superstars in these communities. not just to the fans but the cops who are huge sports fans. how much of a difference could they make if they sat down with

law enforcement and said these are some of the circumstances i've witnessed in my life. these are some of my friends who have been pulled over and put into the system. what can we do to change this? this is how we do our job. how do you do your job? >> jesse: great, constructive idea. last year, law enforcement deaths in the line of duty were up substantially. they are under a lot of pressure. i want to play some thing from martha's show last night. something from nate boyer. >> i think it would be a powerful notion to see two people who are obviously on opposite ends of the spectrum during this whole situation just as an example for our country. we need to listen to each other more, whether you agree with others or not and have these conversations. >> jesse: he was talking about colin kaepernick sitting down

with president trump. >> dana: i think why not? >> kimberly: like the beer summit. >> dana: but with sincerity. i think president trump is in a great position. if the nfl came out and said we are for criminal justice form. and you have bipartisan support in the house and senate with cosponsors to say we are for criminal justice reform too. why wouldn't you want to drive it forward and be the leader? if it is there for the taking, make it happen. >> juan: i don't know. i don't know if jeff sessions is going to buy in. >> dana: if the president says i want this done. >> juan: they undid so many so many things. >> dana: i think if the president said this is what i want done. the power of the president is amazing. bring people together and say let's get it worked out.

>> jesse: what an amazing photo op. colin kaepernick and president trump. president trump could look like the healer in chief. maybe kaepernick might get signed. might help with his p.r. >> juan: it might. he might take a knee. >> kimberly: somehow i don't know if that's going to go so well. a cnn contributor, he was saying on saturday it's not just about social injustice and police crimes or police excessive force or brutality. it's about gender inequality, gender pay, the pay gap. it's about housing determinatio determination. the list is evolving. >> kennedy: that is extensive. >> kimberly: it's also about all this. dry cleaning is unequal in price. >> kennedy: when it is not environmentally friendly.

>> jesse: we have had this discussion, juan. the grievances have missed -- metastasize. first about dry cleaning. >> juan: to me, this comes back to something dana and i were talking about. work -- we were tying about condoleezza rice. if you have strategically mounted on offensive that allows your critics to say it's about something else, you've made a mistake. so here we have a situation where their critics and players say this is about disrespecting the flag, disrespecting the afton. i don't think that's what the players are about. i don't even think the players are about disrespecting police. they say they don't like police brutality. >> kennedy: scott walker propose that perhaps the nfl can address the problem within the league of domestic violence. maybe that should be -- has to

be addressed. perhaps it is getting to encompass too many issues. that's a major issue that the nfl hasn't appropriately taken care of with some of their own players. >> juan: right. i think that goes back to the ray rice situation in baltimore with the videotape of him hitting his wife or girlfriend in the elevator. but that's not what this was about and that's not what colin kaepernick started to do. lots of things get piled on. i was thinking, what are they saying? i had to rely on jesse. clearly people have arguments. i know some people on the far left it's about systemic racism in society and they want their heroes, the football players, to use their platforms to raise the issue. this is one aspect. this never gets raised in your calculation.

so many of these fans are black people. when you had jerry jones and these other people saying this and that, moments like the white fans are going to abandon us on the white conservative republican fans. guess what, they are black fans and liberal fans who say wait a second. we want people to be socially aware and care about their community. >> jesse: i think it's less of a race issue than it is about patriotism. the attorney for colin kaepernick says kaepernick was not invited to the meeting. maybe some of the players wanted him to go. incomplete pass. >> juan: "sports illustrated" didn't put him on the cover either. >> kennedy: the swimsuit issue hasn't come out yet. >> kimberly: maybe he can wear his socks with the suit. >> jesse: coming up, isis

>> kimberly: today we got an incredible update on the war on terror from the pentagon. >> isis is losing in every way. we have devastated their networks, targeted to and eliminated their leaders at all levels. today in syria, isis is losing its grip. after more than four months of operations, raqqa is more than 90% cleared. >> kimberly: i could watch that over and over again. raqqa is the de facto capital of isis and that's big news. u.s. backed forces are nearly in control of the city, the terror network on the verge of defeat. general jack keane credits the trump administration for finally getting the job done. >> the obama administration has always been paralyzed by fear of adverse consequence. what happens if this happens? what happens if it goes wrong? always paralyzed. this think should have been over more than a year ago. new administration, new national security team said we are going

after it. >> dana: he has the best perspective. he was there at the beginning and knows what happens if you have a vacuum. i think -- this is great news. i think once isis is defeated, we have to ask, what is the u.s. role going to be. we know what happens when we walk away. that's what general keane was just saying. we have a problem. iran has been extending its influence in the region. you have another problem happening in iraq in kurdistan, the oil-rich region. you have all the fighters who were countering isis, that would be turkey, syrian kurds, arabs, iranian-backed fighters and us. we were working together to defeat isis. now they are all fighting each other. so they can deal with the region. this is great news in terms of isis being backed down and only

having 10% of its territory left but there are looming problems on the horizon. >> kimberly: we get caught up in the victory of it and the decisiveness of it, and the accomplishments have been achieved quickly under the trump administration. what do you do about these warring factions who are competing to control the territory that were united against the common enemy but are now splintered against one another. >> kennedy: that is the uniting factor. it's wonderful to see their defeat. they want to see us dead and they hate freedom. they are antithetical to our wonderful way of life. however the kurds have been our biggest ally in the middle east and a very reliable ally when we see in so many places shifting alliances and we think we are friends with someone. we give them a bunch of weapons and they turned around and use them on us. the kurds want independence. they just passed a referendum

and they turn around and the people they were fighting with to defeat isis are now attacking them in kirkuk. it's really frustrating but at some point, it's so complicated and so convoluted and so deadly. we spent $1.7 trillion in iraq since 2003. what are we getting out of bed? what are our american interests at this point? i think we should be supporting the kurds and we should be supporting their independence. at the same time, we have to look at turkey. maybe you are not a good ally. if you are not a good friend. >> juan: iraq, they don't want an independent kurdish area in the north just like the turks don't want the kurds extending across the border. >> kennedy: iraq and syria don't exist in the way they did 15 years ago. >> juan: i think it was vice president biden who said maybe we should draw sections

and divide up what was iraq. >> kimberly: we have to come to the table to do that, don't you think? facilitated before they start taking matters into their own hands, kind of be the conduit. >> juan: i think the effort was won by the syrian democratic forces, mostly kurdish. i thing we do have a debt to them. we supplied tremendous airpower in terms of bombing. i was listening. the obama administration was so worried about consequences. i was looking through the material and i said thousands of people killed -- 270,000 displaced, homes levels. you have somebody describing the conditions in raqqa and mosul as hiroshima-like. the displacement led to the immigrant crisis that spread through turkey into europe. there's lots of consequences. that's why i was so impressed by

u2, dana and kennedy, saying we have to think about where it goes from here because we want to control it. we do not want a repeat of what we saw after the iraqi forces in the creation of isis out of the remnants of the military force. >> jesse: well, prepare to be impressed by me. under president obama, isis grew to control a third of iraq. that's about the size of the state of indiana. now under president trump, isis controls 3% of iraq which is like the smallest county in indiana. i'm not saying president trump deserves a lot of the credit but a lot of credit does go to the local forces. he really unleashed hell on isis by loosening the rules of engagement, letting the 21 go in there and kill people. >> kimberly: returning the rules of it engagement to what they were prior to the obama administration.

>> jesse: they intensify the air strikes. i think isis on the ropes is a good development. yes, there's some ugly scenarios but sometimes those are the ugly consequences of war. you set also there's a lot of problems with the armed militia. the shiite militia from iran, the kurds, they are armed. a lot of these people might settle some old ethnic scores. i like to stay away from that. i don't think we should divide the country into three. that's going to influence iran. the main issue is isis doesn't control the vast landmass where they have control of oil profits. the oil profits were generating, finance has generated their ability to wage war on the civilian population. >> kimberly: you don't need a new isis. >> kennedy: obviously we only have so much money. we are over leveraged in this country. it's obvious. look at the debt we've got. if you had to choose between

propping up iraq and parts of the middle east or building the wall which is going to cost $90 billion, what do you choose? >> jesse: since mexico is paying for the wall. >> kennedy: >> kimberly: a lot . president trump expected to declare the opioid crisis a national emergency but it's congress actually fueling the epidemic?

60 minutes report that exposed congress for being mitigated by the pharmaceutical industry. >> why are these people sponsoring bills? when people in their backyards are dying from drugs coming from the same people these bills are protecting. i think the drug industry, the manufacturers, wholesalers, distributors and chain drugstores have an influence over congress that has never been seen before. >> dana: tom marino has withdrawn his name for consideration to be the nation's drug czar after being highlighted as a champion of a bill that weakened the federal government's authority to stop companies from disturbing opiates. juan, that was old vanish investigative news reporting that led to that report that had a consequence. one person withdrawing their name. there may be more to come from this. >> juan: i think there is a lot more to come.

let's look at the consequences of not only the drug companies but the middlemen leading them to the drugstores. pumping these opioids into communities. joe manchin, the senator -- >> dana: we have that. joe manchin. >> this is how bad the system is. this has been a business plan. i've said this from day one. in west virginia, when you have less than 400 people and send 9 million pills there, you tell me that's not a business plan that you don't want to make money off it. my goodness. you have to be stuffing pills down people's throat. men, women, and children. this is uncalled for. >> juan: jesse even was like what is going on. millions of pills. what are you doing? how can that be justified? congress gets involved and where previously it was that the dea could stop shipment if they looked like they were being

overdone and headed to the black market, they could stop it on the basis of suspicious behavior. the drug industry goes to congress and says oh, no. they are getting involved with free enterprise here. we should be making this decision. the standard is raised. it has to be emanate an substantial threat which is almost impossible to prove, and as a result, the flow of opioids continues. >> dana: do you think that companies are going to see new regulation out of this? >> kimberly: i believe there is going to be new regulation. i've never seen the level of discussion highlighting this epidemic. a focus on it. i thought during the campaign, governor christie, seeing it continue with president trump. governor christie was there discussing this with the president last week. i think this is something he really wants to get done, especially for president trump, this is something very personal to him. having lost his brother to

addiction. i think he understands personally and uniquely there is a struggle the families go through that are crippled by this. families destroyed. >> dana: and the first lady has taken this on as an issue. kennedy, what do you think about declaring this a national emergency? >> kennedy: i think it fans the flames of hysteria. you see more prohibition on these prescription pills in various states. they have been cracking down on doctors who suspense them -- dispense them. you are seeing more prohibition and more deaths from opioids, including fentanyl. people aren't getting fentanyl from the pharmacy. people aren't getting it from the pharmacy. poor people with mental illness are getting fentanyl on the street and they are getting addicted to it and they will openly talking about wanting to shoot fentanyl. they don't want to shoot heroin anymore. that's the problem. you criminalize it. it's a national health crisis, and we should be putting people in rehab. we should be helping people with

their combined until illness and drug addiction instead of throwing them in cages. we really have to shift the conversation. we really have to help people because we are looking in the wrong place and stopping the wrong -- >> kimberly: do -- dual diagnosis. see 615 years ago these drug companies told congress that pills were not addictive. congress fast-track the approval process and you have distributors pumping pills into mining towns, into towns in the industrial midwest for people do backbreaking labor and get paid minimum wage. into towns where people have come back from iraq and afghanistan and are using the va. they don't really actually kill the pain. what they do is, they mask the pain. they are not treating the underlying problem. the underlying problem can be solved through operations, physical therapy, diet, mental

soldiers and siding with the enemy. that's the last thing in the world that was true. >> kennedy: wow. seems as though she has apologized for her trip to the vietnam in the past. i guess you can take the commie out of vietnam but you can't take the commie out of the commie. >> juan: i will leave that alone. i think many americans have a negative view of the vietnam war. she seemed to be anti-american soldier and even anti-u.s. she says she's proud of the resistance today. i don't think anybody would argue with that but the resistance back then i think is something she damaged by sitting in the cockpit of that north vietnamese. >> kennedy: used to shoot down american soldiers. is it possible to live in this country where there is political disagreement and still be proud of it, jesse?

>> jesse: what did michelle obama say? it's the first time in my life i've been proud to be an american. i think jane fonda's renaissance helps donald trump. he cannot get better foil. it's either hillary or president obama, jane fonda, kathy griffin. they keep coming up. kneeling during the anthem, rioting. you cannot ask for better enemies. as long as jane is in the news, i think that's good. she did give aid and comfort to the enemy, and i do not believe her saying she was upset that she was perceived as anti-american soldier or anti-american. she went on a broadcast, did a radio interview where she told vicious lies. america wanted to colonize vietnam. american soldiers were deserting at record numbers. american officers were drunks. nixon is a racist murder. this, to say she is not a traitor or didn't give aid and comfort what i think her photo

op prolonged the vietnam war. it brought north vietnam away from the negotiating table. when soldiers came back, pows, americans from north vietnam and said they were tortured, she called them liars and hypocrite hypocrites. jane has been wrong about so many things. she's wrong again. >> kennedy: she makes my blood boil. i can't let go of the vietnam thing and the fact that she has no contrition. it drives me. >> dana: she only feels bad that it looked like it -- her image took a hit. what's weird is she is so self-aware about everything else in her life. she seemed to have a momentary lapse. i think she has figured out that the talking point to get out of those interviews. i don't understand why somebody in opposition doesn't try to lift america up. however the president is, that's a temporary thing. in four or eight years, any president is going to be a

former president. why can't you try to lift people often say of course i am proud of this country. it doesn't matter who the president is. >> kennedy: we are strong enough as americans. what drives me crazy as we had a wonderful conversation about vietnam with the ken burns documentary. the point of that documentary was to heal some of those wounds which are still simmering. i think that's a very positive step. i think what she's doing is incredibly negative and divisive. she reminds me of hillary clinton in the way she makes excuses. >> kimberly: absolutely, and she makes it about herself. it's disgusting to hear talk about it again. all those who lost family members and those in the military who bravely served. she tried to make light of it. she knew what she was doing. she did it at the time. it was purposeful and it's inexcusable because who did she

the comments he just made. i personally don't see it that way. i don't see it that we are withdrawing. i think we still maintain a strong leadership position in the world. people know they can count on the united states. no country is more generous in terms of times of tragedy or natural disasters in terms of providing humanitarian relief around the world, providing military support in the face of brutal regimes and dictatorships. i see the united states still standing up and taking ownership for those situations as it relates to president trump, yes, he has used themes of patriotism and uniting the country and i guess if you have an idea about it one way or the other, you can kind of say well, this is what he means by that or this is what he means. what i think he tries to under his campaign promises. he was elected and he wants to do the things he promised the hardworking men and women, and one of those things was that he wouldn't do bad deals. he said at the beginning of that campaign that the iran deal was a bad deal and he said the climate deal was a bad deal in terms of the large amount of

money that the united states is having to proffer for it and getting return on it. that i think is being consistent with his campaign message. >> juan: jesse, clearly looks like he's saying history has assigned to the ash heap this kind of half-baked nationalism. >> jesse: i love john mccain but he can be a real pain to republican presidents. i know dana can agree. he was a little bit of a thorn in george w. bush's side, voted against the tax cuts, very irritating when it came to waterboarding for president bush. the iraq war, not always supportive but he helped turn that around. listen. he has already sunk obamacare repeal. probably going to vote against the tax reform package. i do like what he said. i like how he said i'm not going to comment on what trump says. i'm going to comment on what trump does. i wish a lot of senators would

do that, including bob corker. senator graham. i think that's good advice for a lot of the public and senators. >> juan: what struck me, nationalism, especially after the austrian elections this past weekend on what we've seen happen in germany, after brexit. it seems to almost be global. here you see senator mccain almost in a valid -- this is not the way the world should be going. >> dana: to give a speech like that, you almost have to understand what's going to happen in the morning. what are people going to take away from it? if it requires further explanation you should put more of it in your speech. when i interviewed condoleezza rice, she is concerned about the four horsemen of the apocalypse. nationalism, populism, basically this thing that is not necessarily just president trump's campaign promises is that there is a global movement around the world to withdraw. that might be better for american interests but
