tarmac 40 minutes. okay i'm going to be 40 minutes late. somehow in the sky they had super sonic speed. ainsley: i think they factor it in now. brian: show up on time not really in time. steve: they build in ramp time. until laguardia annual hour. washington a half hour. only takes 38 minutes to get from new york to washington. brian: we should get more asphalt and make more runways. this country needs more asphalt. steve: they have got that it's called i-95. ainsley: true, true. that's exactly right. congratulations on getting the president. we are going to air some of that. brian: they decided they wanted to get the word out about healthcare. they don't want it to be like healthcare, rather, they want tax reform to be messaged through them. they said hey, i want some national radio shows available because the president is going to talk about his tax reform and send in all the people that helped write it. so, this is a big push for

it. steve: it's good for the white house. because they sat on the sidelines at the behest of mitch mcconnell last time. now they said mitch you sit over there. you are going to help. brian: senate moving forward to pass historic tax cuts by the trump administration. steve: big question is will the congress deliver this time? ainsley: griff jenkins is live in d.c. with the latest. griff? >> good morning, guys. we will see the tax reform flight has taken off. senate passing a budgets resolution, the first step towards getting a fuller budget and it paves the way for tax reform through budget reconciliation rules that require only a simple majority to pass. the president took his tax plan to the conservative heritage foundation last night. promising to simplify the tax code and letting the middle class keep more of their money. but democrats they oppose it. >> it will be hard getting the democrats because they are obstructionists and they vote in blocks. but if we get the republicans we need, we will get that largest tax cut in

the history of our country. and you will see things happen like have never happened before. >> so are republicans on board? well, there are concerns over adding to the country's 20 trillion-dollar deficit and key vote to watch will be senator rand paul. but moderates like collins, mur cow is i and mccain have signaled support this time. steve mnuchin said everything is negotiable except cutting the corporate tax rate from 35% to 20%. mnuchin says maybe even by the end of the year. >> get tax reform done this year. it will be extraordinary. that's our objective. our objective is to get it on the president's desk by december to get him to sign it this year. senate keeps moving towards a larger vote on the budget today. meeting later this morning. guys. steve: griff, thank you very much. it looks as if it's full steam ahead regarding this vote on friday.

as griff just said, they have got to do it on friday if they want to be able to pass tax reform with 50 votes. the good news is the margin is a little bigger because thad cochran who has been very ill is apparently back in washington, d.c. brian: which is a pleasant surprise. they thought for sure he was out for the week. steve: rand paul is ready to vote no. because, as griff just said, he doesn't like the fact that the g.o.p. is going to spend billions in spending. he wants to get rid of $4 billion in overseas war funding that exceeds the budget caps that they all agreed to back in 2011. brian: that was the sequester caps. they did get good news. it looks like senator john mccain is in. which is a pleasant surprise for republicans on the budget to get them to tax reform. so, meanwhile, the spat continues between rand paul, linz is i graham and john mccain. for example. >> many people pointed out this could actually be a tax cut. i'm final with a tax cut. people say is that fiscally

responsible? in the context in believing in spending cuts that would be. that's what our budget document is. i will vote for almost any tax cut that comes down. i'm for stimulating economic growth through a tax cut. i won't do and it say i'm also -- i don't care about spending. the budget vote to me is a symbol and a guide post as to what we are as a party and what we stand for. and the people like mccain and graham who parade as conservatives, that are not really conservative, they need to be called out. they are playing the public and they are playing us for fools. neither one of them are conservative. these people will continue to throw wool over the eyes of the american voter and say we are conservative but yet it is passed off frankly not conservative. ainsley: he is saying lindsey graham and john mccain are not conservative. lindsey graham tweeted this out getting more bad info at rand paul. don't screw up tax reform

now. you already saved obamacare by trashing graham-cassidy-heller-johnso n. brian: a lot of squeeze on the defense side is causing a lot of the training accidents we have. pentagon, what they spend on that is another conversation that needs to be addressed. but the money has stearved out our military who has been asked to do more and more in many different operations from africa to the middle east and now we see what is happening in achings. the president is saying get the budget passed. we will handle the $43 billion worth of defense increases and then if you can get my tax reform done we will have enough growth to pay for everything. meanwhile the president went to the heritage foundation yesterday and talked about his tax plan in detail. lynch. >> i have had a great relationship with rand paul. and i think he is going to be with us. i think in the end he is going to be with us. i hope john mccain is going to be with us. we just don't know yet. the problem is we have no democrats. we have absolutely no

democrat votes. >> have you tried? >> yeah. we've tried. we've tried. they are in a box. they are 48 votes. all they want to do is obstruct. i think we have democrats. if we get through the budget. we have to get through the budget first. if we get through the budget we will have the taxes. i think we will have some democrats, especially in states where did i very well. ainsley: even if those two republicans vote against it, this thing can still pass which will be senator rand paul. maybe senator ted cruz. he hasn't said which way is he going to vote. john mccain and lisa murkowski and susan collins who voted no on obamacare. he is saying at least now they are that they will support the plan. the republicans have 52 -- there are 52 republican notice senate. so if two of them don't vote for it, they get 50 votes it, can still pass, the vice president will the tie breaker. steve: big vote on friday. stay tuned for that meanwhile a couple days ago the 'was out in the rose garden. we showed you that. he had that wide ranging exchange, let's call it, with the journalists. i was thinking about what

brit hume required to it as jackals asking questions. they covered all sorts of various topics all over the board. one of the questions asked the president though was about whether or not he had contacted the families of the four service members who were ambushed by isis. in the congo. or rather, niger that is to say. he said he had written them but then he said i don't think all presidents had contacted them. particularly barack obama had not contacted families who had service members. brian: with phone calls. steve: right. brian: the president said it seems to me that's what i heard. kind of backed off a little bit. this thing became the number one story out of a 45 minute press conference where he took two or three questions from the same reporters. how do you compare george bush to what barack obama did to what the president did? should the president be doing that? i asked him that yesterday. this is what he said. >> can i ask you what you thought about when you brought up past presidents

and what they've done? do you want to clarify anything there? >> there is nothing to clarify, to the best of my knowledge. i think i have called every family of somebody that's died and it's the hardest call to make. but i really speak for myself. i'm not speaking for other people. i don't know what bush did. i don't know what obama did. you can find out easily what president obama did. all you have to do is ask the military people. but i believe his policy was somewhat different than my policy. i can tell you my policy is i have called every one of them. and you have to let a little time go by. you just can't call immediately. but, i will be calling, have called, and will be calling the parents and the loved ones, the wives, et cetera, of the soldiers that recently were killed. steve: there was one other part of that interview that we did not include. and that is where he essentially said that, you know, ask general kelly whether or not barack obama called him. according to a news source i read this morning, apparently the kelly family did not get a call from the

president. it is unknown whether or not he wrote a letter. this is framed by the fact that there is another story going on this morning. a florida congresswoman by the name of fredericka wilson says the widow of one of those green berets killed in niger u.s. army sergeant la david johnson was his name was told by the president during a phone call, the soldier knew what he signed up for but the president said but i guess it still hurts. the president now is being slammed for insensitive -- being insensitive. ainsley: this representative, this drad down in florida said she was in the car. i believe it was in the car or listening on speaker phone. ainsley: with the wife down in miami. she said that the president was insensitive when he called to say i'm sorry your husband died fighting for our country. and she said he framed it wrong. he said that comment. she was really offended by it my response to this was the president of the united states of america called to say thank you for your service. i'm sorry for your

sacrifice. that in and of itself is extremely special that the president of the united states picked up the phone to call these families. brian: also, listen. this is one representative's opinion but b. what she thought the tone was and how it was being portrayed. of the president to the slain soldier's family. who are you to sit there and say i am offended by the way the president-by the president's tone to this family. this family won't speak out. i get it for her to scramble and call cnn into this story and make herself this major event is to me is totally inappropriate. steve: the key is we have not heard from the family itself. we have simply heard from this democratic congresswoman who says the president was insensitive in his comments. ainsley: it's okay if we don't hear from the family. they are grieving right now. out of all the things you should be complaining about the president this is not something you should be complaining about in my opinion. he called the family to say i'm really sorry. thank you for your

sacrifice. she didn't like the tone. she didn't like the way he phrased one sentence. do you really think the president was calling to condemn the family? no. brian: i know one family member said that the president waiting was smart. i appreciated the last thing we wanted was a call from the president right after we got word that he got killed in niger. so then this is a lawmaker coming out saying i don't like the tonal. so now when you go to a wake or go to a funeral you will be graded on how the proper mourning. ainsley: the president is not required to call all of the families. it's just extra special and very nice when they do. steve: and usually we never ever ever find out about the phone calls unless somebody makes them public. all right. meanwhile, 6:13 here in new york city. president trump and senator mitch mcconnell say they are closer than ever. is that really a good thing? our next guest says ah, not so sure. ainsley: meet the granny who just bagged a monster alligator. steve: oh my goodness. >> when the head came up it

ainsley: president trump meeting with senate majority leader mitch mcconnell at the white house vowing unity opt g.o.p. agenda. so, is it a sign the president should give the establishment a second chance? nick adams writes all about it in his brand new book it's called the case against the establishment. and he joins us now. hey, nic. great to see you. >> thank you, ainsley, great to be here. ainsley: congratulations on the book. >> thank you. ainsley: we saw him in the rose garden, talking to mitch mcconnell. a lot of people would be trying to destroy this president and this administration. yet, he says that we have an outstanding relationship and we are friends. do you think the president should be able to trust the establishment at this point? >> look, the president is definitely the best person to make that call, ainsley. i think i probably speak on behalf of millions of americans when i say that we have been absolutely devastated and severely disappointed with how the establishment has treated this president, treated his agenda, treated his vision. but, if the president believes that he should give

senator mcconnell another chance, then i think that we should have faith in our president. ainsley: i feel like is he always wheeling and dealing. you know, the art of the deal, he's always negotiating. what's really happening behind the scenes because he's friends with him in the rose garden but then steve bannon is out there saying we need to get rid of mitch mcconnell. we need to change all these senators that aren't for our president's agenda. and he is out there campaigning for all these takenners yet, steve bannon and the president were in favor of different candidates in alabama for jeff sessions' seat? what's happening? >> look, i think president trump has got all of this under control, ainsley. i think that he is. ainsley: you're not answering me. what's going on? >> everyone sells playing checkers. it's hard to know exactly what's going on. i know there is a culture war in this country and then there is the effort of getting legislation through. i think both of those are different fights. i think that the president behind the scenes, i think he is working his magic for the american people. ainsley: let's talk about

your book. congratulations. it came out yesterday. what inspired this book. >> i read the art of the deal when i was 11 years old. i have been a fan of the president force as long as can i remember. he was the political figure i waited ainsley for my entire life. i'm 33 years old. i waited for someone like him to be the president and to be at the major political force in the world. and i'm so thankful for it. and by the same token, i am just so upset at the elites in the establishment and that's academia. that's the media, that's in the government that are all trying to tear this president down. if this president is given a fair chance, if this president is given all the opportunity he needs, to fulfill his vision, ainsley, i think he could be the best president ever. i think his face could belong on mount rushmore but they have got to give a chance. ainsley: nick adams, the book is called the case against the establishment.

justice and injustice in the various communities. and so that way they will be able to do it via other platforms rather than take a knee, i think it is hoped. brian: but they can still take a knee. steve: sure. >> yeah. here's my question and i -- this is a serious question i have for these players that are, in fact, kneeling because we know it is so many at this point. it started with collin kaepernick and now it has spread and infected the league. i would like to ask these players what exactly are you kneeling for and why have you chosen the flag and the anthem to do it? i bet if we asked 100 players we would get 100 different answers. furthermore, i would like to ask those same players what would it take for you to then stand and respect the flag and the anthem? and, again, you would probably get 100 different answers if you would get an answer at all. ainsley: what did you make of jacksonville. they apologized yesterday. remember they went to the u.k. they took a knee during the national anthem but stood up for god save the queen. yesterday they said we are sorry for doing that. brian: it's just their

pence. great to see you this morning. >> good morning. brian: when you see the president interacting with military and sometimes in those tough situations, how would you characterize his demeanor? >> you know, it's interesting. mike and i both have had the privilege of being with lots of our military and frequently we're with the president and melania. and i have never seen someone who has such respect for the military. his compassion and his care is so obvious when he is with these families. ainsley: i'm sure that means a lot to you considering the fact your son is in the marines and you are a military family. thank you for coming on this morning because you have a big announcement. >> we do. one of the privileges of being second lady is that you are able to choose oneishive to kind of highlights. and when i was thinking about what should i talk about, i decided to talk about art therapy. this is a profession that's very misunderstood. i first found out about art therapy in 2006. and here i was someone with

a master's degree in art education. i consider myself to dabble as an artist. i had never heard of art therapy. art therapy is the profession, really these are clinical psychologists who use art as their medium. and it is absolutely amazing to see these people at work who will take, for example, a veteran with ptsd, start them working in clay or masks and their brain is reprogrammed. a lot of these vets have told me after they have worked in art therapy, they don't go to that carkin place anymore. it's just an amazing profession that's very misunderstood. so i have decided to champion that as my issue. steve: have you chosen the campus of florida state university; is that right? >> yes, we have. one of the things that we want to do. we have three goals. one is to elevate the profession and explain it. this is not arts and crafts. the seconds is to encourage

young people to go into this profession and the third is to make people aware that this is an option. if you want some type of therapy. if you have had a trauma, this is something you can look into. but florida state university has a nationally acclaimed amazing art therapy program. we're very excited to go down there today to speak to a lot of the students and the professors and see what they do. kind of praise them for what they're doing. lift up what these young people are doing. and encourage people going in to the profession of art therapy. steve: have you had a wide ranging description of the people who would benefit from art therapy. who all could be helped by it? >> you know, anybody can be helped by art therapy. today we're going to actually observe canopy cove, which is a place where they work with people with eating disorders. we have seen it with autism. i have actually seen it with children who are blind. i'm on the board of tracy's kids in washington, d.c. they work with children with cancer.

situations or armed individuals who may be barricaded and basically the police need these types of drones to help provide them with insight to what they are going into to help save lives. what's super interesting about this technology right now it is more difficult for a police department in the townhouse deploy a consumer drone for their operations than it is for the average person. steve: why? >> it has to do with the rules and regulations right now. right now the operations in limbo. 2.1 million drones sold in the u.s.s. last year alone. that's up from 700,000 the year before. they have say it will be over 3 million this year. yet, we don't have the regulations in place right now to really help boost the industry for what's needed. steve: so the police departments are slowed down because they follow the rules unlike the average person who goes and buys one of those and flies out out by laguardia. >> exactly. we are seeing a lot of different situations right now where people are using them improperly. now, look, for the most part, most folks are out there doing the same thing. then hav have you got guys taking these drones and flying them over the prisons and drops contraband into

moved into the sinai. they moved up hundred families from the northern sinai. they bombed dozens and dozens of churches. they attacked a whole bus load of christians going to a monday monastery. yet the churches are still filled. on good friday they killed dozens of christians and, yet, on easter sunday, you know, you couldn't put another christian in a church in egypt because the christians refuse to be terrorized. they just won't be intimidated. so it's the best of times and the worst of times. brian: also when it came to refugees they weren't prioritized over the last 8 years before president trump took office? what was that like? because you were trying to help them. >> the obama administration frankly didn't care at all. they literally didn't care at all. they blocked us from bringing a nun to testify to congress about the atrocities she witnessed in iraq. not the case with president trump. i mean, you know, president trump and the trump administration care about this issue entirely. and, you know, the truth is, the truth is, you know, trump is on the path to solve the syrian crisis, to

step yesterday voting to proceed on a budget resolution paving the way for tax reform through reconciliation rules. that means they only need a simple majority to pass anything. as the president took his tax plan the democrats opposed to the conservative heritage foundation last night. promising to deliver the largest tax cut in history. >> it's going to be hard getting the democrats because they're obstructionists and they vote in blocks. but if we get the republicans we need, we will get that largest tax cut in the history of our country. and you will see things happen like have never happened before. >> so are enough republicans on board? senators like collins, mur cow is i and mccain who held out on healthcare have signaled support. concerns adding to the deficit. key vote to watch senator rand paul who treasury secretary steve mnuchin says he hopes will come through. >> thank you senator paul can get there. >> we will see. i know the president has had

there are two republican senators. steve: thought that about healthcare, too. ainsley: who knows two. republican senators saying they may or may not support. this one is senator rand paul and one is senator ted cruz. ted cruz has not said whether he is supporting or not. senator rand paul objects to the spending levels republicans agreed on this' can a. republicans say excess spending something overseas military operations which are not subjected to the cap. brian: right. by the way, we need them because we have a lot of terror challenges. next, i think it's important to point out that i spoke to mick mulvaney on our show. and he said i'm kind of down about the chances of getting these votes needed. he see him two hours later on the radio he says i'm much more upbeat now. ainsley: what changed? brian: ed that cochran is not going to be out all week. ainsley: he was sick and aid said he was not going to vote and now is he back. brian: got word that john mccain is going to vote with this budget. steve: rand paul has a problem with john mccain and also with lindsey graham. he says look these guys

act. president talked about a carrot and stick by keeping companies paying good wages they should get a corporate tax rate. that's what our patriot corporate tax rate dolls. the other part of this working family tax credit. child tax credit, work earned income tax credit. the president's daughter has spoken favorably about doing those things. i will go to the president and speak about those two issues. i think they are right down the middle of what he wants to do. and we do that. we have real bipartisan tax reform. and that's what the country wants. steve: well, that's great to hear. because we hear that you all up on capitol hill are all dug. in everybody has a corner nobody is willing to meet in the middle. but you're telling us that if, for instance, components of the two things you are interested in are in the president's and ultimately the senate's tax reform plan, you're a yes vote? >> well, i want to see it i don't know what's exactly going to be in it. those are the two major things that would get, i think, a bunch of democrats to vote yes. but, if this is going to be

sort of mitch mcconnell writing this bill in the back room and trying to jam it through with 50 votes, that's not how we legislate. that's not what the country wants. what fox viewers or msnbc viewers want. they want us to do this right. not in the back rooms but in the light of day. focus on -- you grow the economy from the middle class out. if the middle class does well, then businesses do well. and we make things in this country and working families get tax breaks. and that's what the president said in his campaign. that's what he said on forbes last week. that was part of what he said last night in his heritage speech that i watched. i want to find a way to do it right with 60 votes bipartisanly. and, you know, as you know, steve, i have a history of working with or against presidents of both parties. steve: you do. >> on trades and other issues. i want to do this right for ohio and for my country. steve: i'm sure when the president sees you later today he will go i saw you on tv this morning. >> i hope is he watching today. steve: i hear you might be a yes. sherrod brown from the great state of ohio.

i'm able to do it. ainsley: one of the people that he called was the wife of sergeant la david johnson who his body was brought back on a plane to miami. and had a water canon salute. he was one of the four soldiers killed on october 4th on that niger ambush. look at that video. it looks like his wife is crying. steve: when his widow was at the airport, apparently she was in the company of a florida democrat. congresswoman by the name of fredica wilson. there she is right there on file video. and ms. wilson said that the president of the united states, when he did call her, talking about the president, she said he said that her husband knew what he signed up for but i guess it still hurts. and the congress is beside herself over i cannot believe that the president would make such an insensitive comment. ainsley: well, the president

said it's not at all what he said. he just tweeted about it he writes. brian: he said democratic congresswoman totally fabricated what i said to a wife of a soldier who died in action. and i have proof. sad. unbelievable woman would get out of her way to get involved in a news story where she felt empowered to characterize the comments to the family of a slain soldier. number one, she is making a judgment on what's right or wrong to say somebody-to-somebody who got gunned down in the prime of his life. now she is passing judgment on the president. she is booking herselves on all the shows. and now the president is sitting there wait a second. i have a confidential conversation with a family member and now someone is politicizing the entire event. ainsley: i don't think anyone who hears this story democrat or republican would actually think that if the president of the united states is going to call the wife that he would belittle her and say he signed up for this. well, no. no. he was doing the right thing. he was being nice. he was calling the widow and

other people especially where i'm very popular in their states and they're coming up for an election to vote against the largest tax cut in the history of our country. people need money. the government is taking too much money. we are the highest taxed nation in the world. we need the tax cuts. brian: you golfed with rand paul over the weekend. most agree he is going to be the greatest challenge. >> i have had a great relationship with rand paul. i think is he going to be us. i think in the end is he going to be with us. i hope john mccain is going to be with us. we don't know yet. the problem is we have no democrats. we have absolutely no democrat votes. brian: have you tried? >> yeah. we have tried. we have tried. they are in a block. they have 48 votes. awful they want to do is obstruct. i think we have democrats, if we get through the budget -- you know, we have to get through the budget first. if we get through the budget, we will get to the taxes. we will have democrats especially in states where i did very well. brian: it's going to be a big week. every president has his preference foreign policy. >> i think foreign policy for me has been very strong. i think we did the right thing with iran.

and if you noticed, iran was respectful yesterday. they were not jumping up and down. they were respectful of what i did. and they may not agree with it, but they were very, very respectful. i think that if you look at what i did with the payments going to the insurance companies, you know, not going to poor people. they are going right into the pockets of the insurance companies. and i brought a list for you. brian: you did. >> look at these insurance companies. since obamacare started anthem big company, 270% increase. 270%. that he was since aca, that's obamacare. so since obamacare, humana, 420% increase. aetna, 470% increase. sigma, 480% increase. brian: i looked at those numbers. >> the insurance companies are making a fortune. brian: are you saying when they raise premiums or raise deductibles they are trying to increase their profits instead of doing an honest job about giving people insurance? are they being disdishonest

congressman morino pulled back as drug czar. what went into that. >> it is a great state. i won pennsylvania. he told me, look, if there is even a perception that he has a conflict of interest, with insurance companies, essentially, but if there is even a perception that he has a conflict of interest, he doesn't want anything to do with it. there was a couple of articles having to do with him and drug companies. and tom morino took a pass. weighs very gracious. i have to say that. brian: you came out with mitch mcconnell yesterday and seemed on the same page. one of the questions was writing the green beret soldiers and ends up being a bigger story. can i ask you what you thought about when you brought up past presidents and what they've done. do you want to clarify anything there. >> there was nothing to clarify, to the best of my knowledge. i think i have called every family of somebody that's died. and it's the hardest call to make. i said it very loud and clear yesterday. the hardest thing for me to do is do that. now, as far as other representatives, i don't know. i mean, you could ask

breakfast. i would bring into question whether john kelly was at that breakfast. i know mrs. kelly was. what president trump called into question was not whether every soldier was called. what he was saying is i know george w. bush is passionate about it and i'm passionate about it there are plenty of service members from the obama era that don't feel like that white house had their back the way they wanted to. take the president literally or figuratively. he is making a point that i care in a way that the obama administration maybe did not. ainsley: what about the democrats listening to this story and being politicized. what do you think they are thinking? wouldn't most americans think the president is calling to grieve a fallen soldier. i mean, out of all the arguments that they and all the things they want to say about this president? are they going after the wrong thing here? >> of course they are. what do you say to a fallen widow in that moment, steve. it's impossible to have the words. brian: now you are getting graded. now have you golt to find out. being graded on how you respond to somebody who just lost a son in battle. ainsley: not good enough that the president of the united states. commander-in-chief is picking up the phone to call

performance of the market to date is because all of the things the president has already done. >> regulation roll back. ending the war on coal. ending the war on business. appointment of a supreme court justice that got confirmed. job numbers exploding, lowest unemployment. things he has already done. now, when he gets tax cuts and simplyification, it's just going to make it better. but i don't believe it's going to tank the market. brian: they are hoping for that. >> yes. brian: they are hoping for that if you look at the fact they are targeting dodd frank next. however it was intended it's hamstringing smaller banks. you are the money guy. you used to be secretary of treasury in georgia. so is it? >> it is. dodd frank has put regulations on small banks and put a lot of small banks out of business. that's why i'm glad they're going to go back and take a look at it whatever they come up with, i don't know. but they do need to look at it. ainsley: the president says democrats are obstructionists.

how can he work with them? >> they are obstructionists. let's get that straight, first. and the way he works with them is he has an eye-to-eye talk with them saying you are running for re-election. i can help you or hurt you. it's called the art of the deal. that's what's happening. steve: but, her man, you know they have already made this a political thing. they say it's a tax cut for the rich. the rich, for the most part. pay 70% of the taxes. they will get a tax cut but mainly aimed at the middle class. this is a false negative the democrats always use. i found out they define the rich as a corporation who is going to get a tax rate 35 to 20%. they think any corporation is rich. i have to point out to the democrat yesterday in one of your shows not all corporations are rich. some are about to go bankrupt. it's not the definition of rich. and they never define what rich is. that's how they continue this narrative to try to kill whatever the president and the republicans want to do. steve: all right, herman.

let's talk taxes. okay. this is what is going on. because i know so many of you are interested in the tax report plan that the president and the republicans have been talking about. it looks like it's going to be a go to at least have a debate because it looks as if they will vote on a budget proposal by friday. the good news is their margin has increased because senator from the great state of mississippi has been ill and has returned to washington and will be able to vote aaffirmative. if they get that plus mike pence, it looks like that will put us on course to have a reconciliation consideration for tax cuts. ainsley: right. there's 52 republicans. gop republican senators, so they can only lose two votes if they want mike pence to be the tiebreaker. this two could be senator rand paul and senator ted cruz. won't tell whether or not he's going to support the measure. brian: i think ted cruz will definitely be in in the end. but senator mccain was supposed to be a maybe to a "no." it seems more of a maybe to a

"yes." ainsley: soom psalms as murkowski and collins. brian: via twitter and the sound byte. here's rand paul on mcgain and graham not being conservative enough. >> i'll vote for almost any tax cut that comes down. i'm for stimulating economic growth to a tax cut. but i won't do it and then say i also don't care about spending. the budget vote to me is a symbol and a guidepost as to what we are as a party and what we stand for. and the people like mccain and graham who parade as conservatives that are not really conservative, they need to be called out, and they're playing the public, and they're playing us for fools. neither one of them are conservative. these people will continue to throw would like over the eyes of american voter and simply say, oh, we're conservative, and yet they pass stuff that is just frankly not

conservative. steve: and what he's talking about is the fact in this gop budget thing that they're going to vote on friday, senator paul feels that lindsey graham and john mccain and others who voted for this were spending too much money and now they want to change the rules. get rid of $43 billion in overseas war funding that exceeds the cap from 2011. he says, look, a deal's a deal, and we're trying to save money. don't spend more money than we've got. ainsley: yeah, i can see him saying that about mccain just as his voting record as of late. but lindsey graham was the one who was trying to get the last repeal and replace passed. and he responded to that on twitter. saying get more bad info, rand paul. don't screw up tax reform now. you already saved obamacare by trashing graham-cassidy, heller, and johnson. brian: that is true. here's the problem. rand paul could be all about fiscal responsibility, he could be all about being conservative. but in the end, you're not an army of one.

you have to get along with other people in order to do anything productive. that or you stay in the sideline of the pundit or editorials. okay. i want to do the best i can to get a piece of legislation that's together with my principles. the best i can. but no one's going to get everything they want and look at the alternative if you hold out. i think people have a hard time understanding what he's thinking a lot of the times. ainsley: compromising. negotiating. you're not going to get everything you want. brian: you have to have one point compromise. it's a team game. steve: so it looks as if the vote's going to be friday, and at this point, it looks like it will pass the senate, which means then they will be able to have the talk about taxes coming up. brian: meanwhile, let's talk about another thing that came up in the rose garden when the president decided maybe impromptu with mitch mcconnell to take some questions. one of which is getting a lot of traction. he got a hand that shot up. i'm not sure where it was from that said, hey, whatever happened -- mr. president, did you call the family of the four explain marines who lost their lives in niger?

at which time he said i haven't called them yet, and i will call everyone. and unlike other past presidents i do insist on calling over writing. and everyone from the bush and obama camp said wait, we did both too, and it went back and forth and kind of caught steam when the president picked up the phone and called the family of one green beret army man who actually the family was going to meet the casket at the dover air base. ainsley: so the plane lands, and they bring out the casket. this is in miami with the flag, of course, draped over it of the four u.s. soldiers that were killed, and there is his wife. this is sergeant david johnson's wife. and, yes, that is really hard to see because she is clearly mourning his death. steve: earlier when the president of the united states did call the widow and apparently in the same car at the time was florida congresswoman, a democrat by the name of frederick wilson. and she went on a number of shows yesterday -- and that's her right there. said that when the president

contacted the widow, he said, you know, essentially, this is one of those things. he knew what he signed up for. but i guess it still hurts. and she was shocked by it. she said the congresswoman, she felt it was terrible. she apparently said i want tv show. if she would have went on the phone with the widow, she would have cursed the president. brian: it was unclear. she didn't hear the whole conversation, only portions of it. so having that said, she went on the shows last night condemning the president in the most vile terms possible. ainsley: you know what? we don't -- we saw the man's picture. like, i think we should focus on who he was, he fought for our great country. there's his picture. look at that man and now his body is in a casket with the flag draped over it and the president responded to that democratic congressman in florida and said totally

fabricated to what i said to the wife of a soldier who died in action, and i have proof. sad. steve: well, pete was with us a little while ago. he has served this nation proudly. he's also one of the weekend cohosts on fox and friends. and he says this is clear and simple. politics. >> they will take any line of argument they can against this president. she has been a lock stock member of the resist movement from day one. and if she gets an opportunity to twist or spin the president's words, even if it's around a dead soldier, they will do it. we saw what they did with the gold star father me convention. how they carried that narrative forward. and they want to question at every turn what he says he's committed to. there's no one more committed, i believe, to our service members, to our veterans than this president. he's personally passionate about making sure we deliver for them. so they want to attack that with any piece of evidence that they do. and it wouldn't surprise me if he has proof. i'm sure they do record phone calls. steve: said on the channel this morning that the

president is a sick man. in the past, she has said that the president is on the brink of impeachment, he's desperate for attention and needs psychological health. she skipped the inauguration. so maybe there are politics involved. brian: maybe. i would circle that word. so we'll find out what the deal is here. but i noticed the tone that she took and started looking down when the president tweeted out and was read back to her that he had proof. and she seemed to have change her whole body language. ainsley: here's the thing. if this were happening to me, and i'm not in her shoes, i can't imagine what that's like. if this happened under obama or president trump and something happened to my child. no matter whop is if he's calling my house or she's calling my house to tell me that they're sorry about the loss of my child, i would be so touched that they took the time, the highest leader, the commander-in-chief to call me and say i'm sorry. brian: we have not heard from the family yet. steve: the family has not said the family did anything wrong. but the woman who was in the car with her when the widow

brian: the nfl had scheduled meetings, and they were going to happen for owners, but this time they invited players because they're in a bit of a crisis. they have not handled this correctly. but the kneeling and the national anthem and the president when he said it has got to stop, put a lot of pressure on the owners and players to address this issue. and believe it or not, the one thing that emerged for sure is there is no mandate that you have to stand for the national anthem. which is going to get a lot of people upset. ainsley: rodger goodell, as you remember last week, he sent out a letter to all of the team owners and said i prefer for them to stand. i think that's what they should do. but he said yesterday, there won't be a punishment if they don't stand. >> today's discussion with our players was very productive and very important.

the players and the owners came to an agreement that these aren't really issues that are player issues or owner issues or community issues, they're issues that affect all of us in our communities. steve: so they're not going to require the players to stand during the national anthem, even though so far it has been bad for business and bad for tv ratings. instead, they're going to pledge to work on social justice things and help the players find platforms to address things in their communities they're worried about instead of taking a knee during the national anthem. brian: so they're going to set up an activist boot camp where players can go and find out how to get their voice heard and use their celebrity and power and money to get their mission statement and their message statement out. so we'll see how that goes. just joined cnn, former wide receiver. he came out and said he talked to a lot of the players and one of the major issues they want to address is the gender pay gap. you wouldn't think that nfl players would be focusing on the gender pay gap. ainsley: isn't there one

because the average person at home, they're sitting watching the tv in a room, and they're thinking you know what? what if i took the wall out right there? i could do this, i could do that. everybody can identify with what you're doing. >> sure. you know, it's definitely take some trial and error, takes a little bit of handiness like we were talking about before. but big picture, we want to push people to take chances, you know? it's not for everybody. jo always talks about her experience from a design standpoint that it takes a little while to get acclimated as for what your style is, per se. but i think too many people take other people's advice and implement it only to find out that's not our thing at all. brian: here's the other thing. very similar to mike rowe and john. you guys have skills that for the most part americans are losing, the ability to build things and create things. and you have a specialized skill. are you concerned as a country that we're not learning to do this anymore? >> you know, a little bit. i talk about that generally in the book.

i don't go into the specifics, but i felt like an outsider. i felt odd when i was in college. i would sit and watch and not pay attention, and that was my own fault. steve: what were you studying in college? >> i was a business major. so, yeah, 42 years old, i'm glad that i have that diploma on the wall. with one of these gals that really pushed me to get that thing. so she was honored when i crossed the stage. but i remember looking out the window in these business classes and watching the guys pushing the lawn mower to maintain the campus lawn, and i was, like, i would give my right arm to be one of these guys and what you just mentioned about mike. it's, like, we have so much opportunity in the trade universe. brian: so many open jobs. >> people are pushed in that direction. you go to college, you become a banker, you become a lawyer, and it's, like, what's wrong with being a plumber or electrician? absolutely nothing where i come from. so i appreciate that. ainsley: it's fun because you definitely get your hands dirty. he does all the fixing, and then she gets done -- steve: she's got the big picture. ainsley: you know this barn doors that you -- i see those

because suddenly, a phone call from the commander-in-chief to a grieving family looks like it has been politicized. >> well, i mean, here's the big problem is that the only account in the phone call that we have so far is actually from frederick wilson and this person calling for trump's impeachment back in may. so the media immediately picked up on her account. she was apparently in the dar and heard the conversation on speakerphone. but we haven't heard anything from the widow of the service member. we haven't heard president trump's version. we haven't heard the transcript. we haven't heard tapes. we haven't heard anything except for a democrat who has political motivations here, particularly 48 hours after trump suggested that president obama didn't call all of the families of troops and somehow that was a short coming. so it's a little bit convenient that this story pops up now. that's not to say he didn't say these things. but i would like to see some evidence before the media immediately jumps to the conclusion that fulfills -- brian: yeah. let's book a nine-person panel and debate what a bad person the

president is. this woman, maxine waters. some in the past, miami correspondent to donald trump, congresswoman to donald trump. stop tweeting. what calls for his impeachment. she also says he is desperate for attention and needs psychological help. this is leading up to the fact that she witnessed on speakerphone the portion of a conversation regarding the family of a slain soldier. i believe she has an axe to grind. maybe she's 100% right but the background at least makes you be skeptical of your questioning; right? >> yeah. i mean, if you're going to be in a he said, she said situation, then you have to remember about the credibility of the various characters, and this is why i'm saying anyone of fair mind at this point should be saying. okay. let's see some actual evidence. transcript, tape, how about the widow herself testifying as to what exactly happened in this conversation? because even wilson's recounting of the conversation, there's ellipses

that do heavy lifting. he knew what he signed up for. but he knew what he signed up for, but it still feels bad. it could be something like a response directly to the widow and something the widow said and we just don't know. ainsley: ben, we put up a picture of this guy. he's very young. he leaves behind a wife. i don't know if he has kids. look how young he is. look how handsome he is. he died for our country. can we not talk about this? the sacrifice and service that this man made? >> well, again, i think if the conversation went exactly as wilson is, that would be somewhat troubling because i don't think the president should be saying that thing, but i don't think we have the evidence to say that. and obviously, everyone is devastated about the loss of sergeant johnson. the idea that president trump is sitting in the white house, and he really doesn't care what happened to sergeant johnson, that seems to be a very convenient political narrative, as i say arising 48

hours after trump seemingly suggested something like that about president obama and -- ainsley: yeah, but we don't know the conversation. but do you really think the president would call up the widow and say -- preach that narrative instead of saying i'm sorry? steve: well, and to your earlier point where, you know, we haven't heard from the family, per se, but we did hear from the president earlier, and he said he -- the tweet was democratic congressman totally fabricated what i said to the wife of a soldier who died in action. and i have proof. so the big question is will he reveal -- and then he writes sad. will he reveal that proof? will we hear from the family? these are normal conversations between a commander-in-chief and a grieving family. we never ever hear about until today. brian: let's change gears and talk about hillary clinton who, by the way, is in south korea saying the president is causing war with north korea. totally irresponsible. she also made clear she doesn't want to run against the president again, but she'll continue to harass him and continue to criticize him. and then we found out that the

clinton foundation has a link with the russians. revealed to have routed millions of dollars to hillary clinton while she was secretary of state to the clinton foundation. and then next thing you know, russia ends up with a lot of our uranium. any coincidence there? >> well, peter schweitzer detailed this during the campaign, and it was a major scandal. it was something that president trump brought up during the campaign trail. but the department of justice knew full well there was attempted corruption by the russian government in these, and they did nothing about it. so you do have to wonder why isn't eric holder being called before congress right now? why isn't he being called on by the new doj to answer questions about why they didn't do anything. why they didn't even apparently let the state department know if that's what happened. all of this is deeply suspicious. we already know that the department of justice under loretta lynch was making moves on behalf of hillary clinton was the department of justice on behalf of hillary clinton making moves under eric holder as well that would have protected some sort of cash pipeline between the russians and the clinton foundation.

>> well, i guess that's just the difference of opinion. look, think about it this way; right? if we came out and said we're going to spend $1.5 trillion over the next ten years to grow government, $1.5 trillion to pay for bernie sanders health care plan, it would cost a lot more than that, $1.5 trillion free something for everybody, you know, the media, the editorial boards would be saying how enlightened it is. but instead we're saying we're going to spend $1.5 trillion over the next ten years by giving you money back so that you can spend it into the economy and, by the way, it's going to grow the economy there by creating more taxpayers. steve: you're talking about the tax cuts. >> right. but the budget does that. so the budget sets up the ability to do tax cuts. so now what we're saying -- and, by the way, it's not going to cost 1.5 or $2 trillion because unlike government spending, you're going to see economic growth. you're going to have more taxpayers, you're going to have people working making more money, you're going to have people spending more money. it's going to grow the economy, so it's not going to be 1.5 or $2 trillion, and it's going to return more money into your hands.

but to do that, first, you have to pass a budget so that we can use reconciliation -- use the budget as a vehicle to use reconciliation to pass tax cuts. ainsley: well, is -- sorry. go ahead. >> i mean, this is what i don't understand. okay? we have a republican president and a republican congress elected on the promise of repealing and replacing obamacare, which hasn't happened. getting rid of regulations, which we've done a little bit of and the white house has done a lot of. fixing the tax code, this is what we're debating on. and rebuilding our military and ensuring that america and our international relations and our trade deals are being treated fairly. if we don't do these things, people are going to look at it and say why do we need you guys up there? what was the point and what was my vote all about? and i honestly just don't understand why these things aren't happening. so we're going to keep working and do everything we can to make sure that it does. brian: so what you're saying is this is not what marco rubio wants. it's what marco rubio wants within the structure of government. you understand there's got to be compromise. senator rand paul, i admire him for standing up for what he believes in but at some

point, you have to say what is my overall objective? and it seems to me you are picking sides in this and that rand paul's wrong, am i right? >> well, i admire rand intellectual honesty. i admire his commitment and rand is a guy that when he believes something, he's not doing it for show, he believes it, and he has done this for a long time, and he has a right to do that. he's a key part of our team here, and he's an ally on a multiple number of issues. what i'm saying to you is as a conservative, i know that we live in a constitutional republic. and in a constitutional republic, it's given us the system of government where somehow we have to share power with people that disagree with us on a lot of things. and that means there are few times when any of us will get 100% of what we. the. but when it comes to tax reform, this has to happen. it just has to happen. we cannot fail. forget about the politics of it. america is engaged in a global competition. the world is beating us time and again because we are hurting ourselves, and we need a pro american tax reform that allows us to rebuild our economy and give people the opportunity to get ahead in
