president and the clinton camp. let's get to it. >> first from the fox news deck this wednesday afternoon, president trump says there's a lot of love and unity among republicans. this as he continues his public fight with two senators in his own party. more on that in just a moment. first, a reminder how we got here. breaking in this hour yesterday, the announcement from the arizona senator jeff flake that he will retire at the end of his current term. on the senate floor, he said he will no longer be complicit in the face of what he calls president trump's reckless and outrageous behavior. the tennessee republican senator bob corker also ramped up his criticism of the president yesterday calling him untruthful and saying the president will be remembered for debasing the nation. analysts say the infighting raises questions about tax cuts and the party's agenda. the president said he's lunch

policy positions on tax reform, the. believes that senator flake and senator corker will do the right thing and support tax reform, shep. >> shepard: the president talked about something that a lot of people have been curious about. that is how the tax plan is going to affect people's 401(k) retirement accounts. >> this is what actually ignited the feud yesterday between the president and senator corker. monday morning, the president sent out a tweet saying that 401(k)s, which some people have been talking about, reducing the amount of tax-free contributions that people can make as a way to pay for tax reforms. the president said that is off the table, this is a boon to the middle class and that's going to stay. senator corker came out and said you shouldn't be telling us what to do in the senate. then this morning kevin brady, the chairman of the ways and means committee said, you know what? this idea of capping 401(k) tax-free contributions is something we should be looking at. so i asked the president about

or $3,000, that could be a big impact on the way people are saving for retirement. the president did not lay down a red line. he says he wants to see 401(k)s left alone. >> the president defended his phone call with the window of a u.s. soldier killed in niger. the widow of ladavid johnson has accused the president of forgetting her husband's name when he called her. what were the specifics today from the president? >> this happened a week ago today when the president made four phone calls. one to myeisha johnson. he insisted the calls were about condolences, about talking to the family and listening to the family. he disputed myeisha accounts that he was insensitive and that he didn't have a grasp her husband her's name. >> i was really nice to her. i respect her.

does feel compelled to make the calls. the one thing i should have asked him, does he intend to make more calls. we'll save that for next time. shep? >> shepard: thanks, john. now back to tension between the president and a couple members of his party. a day after announcing his decision not to run for re-election. jeff flake says he's not ruling out running against the president. >> are you open to challenging him in 2020? >> that's a long way away. i'm focused on next 14 months in the senate. making sure that we get some good policy. there's some things i want to accomplish in the short term, certainly myself and senator tim kaine are pushing an authorization for the use of force. there's the daca issue and broader immigration policy. so i'm going focus on that.

fox news. the president today called it all a disgrace. former british spy christopher steele helped write that report. it contains claims unverified by fox news about president trump, his associates and possible ties to the kremlin. an unnamed republican reportedly first hired that political research firm, fusion gps, to dig up opposition research on candidate trump during the gop primaries. fox news confirms a lawyer for the clinton campaign and the dnc contacted that same firm to continue its research in april of last year. former clinton campaign spokesperson brian fallow responded on twitter. he said if it helps in robert mueller's investigation whether the trump administration colluded with the election, then it's money well-spent. he tweeted i regret i didn't know about christopher steele's hiring pre election.

>> shepard: president trump now says he thinks some democrats will vote for the gop's tax bill. but the top democrat in the house, the minority leader, nancy pelosi, is calling it a cruel dangerous plan. she says it raises taxes on the middle class while giving tax cuts to the wealthy and at the same time increases the national debt. speaker of the house paul ryan says he can't see why anyone would vote against the republican tax bill. he claims the plan will not have a big effect on the deficit. mike emanuel is live on capitol hill. we don't know the details of the

plan yet. we don't know who fits in to what category, we don't know who pays what and we don't know how this will affect the national debt, do we or the deficit? >> no. sounds like a lot of it is fluid. one challenge is, you need revenue. so you need some vegetables to go with the steak. for now republican leaders are trying to keep the gop unified. >> it's clear we share a lot of the same goals. it's clear we're united in an effort to take more out of washington's pockets and put it more in middle class pockets. >> one idea out there is perhaps creating a separate tax bracket for those that earn more than a million dollars a year. the white house has not ruled that out. >> if you look at the blueprint that's been agreed to, agrees to a top rate of 35%, which is a reduction of what is there. the president and the white house team says if you need to compromise by picking a different rate, we're open to looking at it.

that's where we are. >> so clearly sounds like there's wheeling and dealing going on on the final tax reform package. shep? >> shepard: if you pay state or local or municipal taxes, once you pay them, that amount is deductible from your federal income tax. there's discussions about doing away with that deduction. do we know where we are on that? >> that sounds fluid as well. one estimate is by doing away with that, you can generate $1.8 trillion the next decade or so. lawmakers from new york, new jersey and california are fighting it. >> they say, well, let's just take away the deduction for people above $100,000, $200,000, even $400,000. or they say, you can choose between taking the statement and local deduction or the mortgage deduction. that one is like saying taxpayer, we'll chop your right hand off or left hand off.

we're giving you can choice. >> one line of attack, the tax reform package will cause the deficit to explode. >> mr. speaker, see the math of your own budget. there ain't no deficit reduction. you're only increasing the national debt. >> a vote on the budget expected tomorrow assuming it passes. we're told we should see the fine print of the tax reform package a week from today, shep. >> shepard: that's before they vote on the tax package or after? >> no. we're supposed to see the paperwork a week from today. there's a timeline that says the house will vote before thanksgiving and then in theory, the senate would vote before christmas. but it can be very fluid up here on capitol hill. >> shepard: it's tight in there. mike emanuel on capitol hill. thanks a lot. let's go to tom now from the white house, a reporter for the associated press. good to see you. >> hi, shep. how are you doing? >> shepard: so many people e-mail us or reach us on social media and say what about if i

make this and -- we don't know. there's no way to know. why aren't they releasing the details? >> well, they're in negotiations right now. you have the president who is the art of the deal, an entire congressional body that does deal making. i'll be honest, i think also is they just don't know. mike was sayinger earlier, they don't know how to balance the steak against the vegetables. you have to make up the deficit that you're creating here. you have a lot of folks, corker being one of them, saying they don't want to add to the deficit at all. so there's so many moving pieces. this deadline that they have here of next week is hugely important. now we have an idea of when we might start to see something solid. >> shepard: for a lot of traditional conservatives, small government conservatives, fiscal conservatives, they're not going to want a great deficit increase as they haven't for years and

years. it's a thing about which conservatives have been complaining as long as i can remember. so if they do have a deficit increase, it's going to be more than bob corker. a lot of republicans won't like it. >> absolutely. mike pence got his start a decade ago fighting george w. bush on these very issues. so you have something inside the administration, the vice president himself who is a fiscal hawk. it's a key question right now. as you said, it's a huge leverage point. it won't just be corker. there will be a lot of conservatives concerned about this. >> shepard: let's say you make $75,000 a year. will you know before your representatives in washington vote how this new tax plan is going to affect your family? will the people get the details? >> i hope so. >> shepard: so there's not an answer yet? i hope so too.

president trump has threatened north korea with fire and fury as he put it and he's repeatedly called kim jong-un little rocket man. president trump has said the united states has been unsuccessfully dealing with north korea for decades and that policy did not work. rich edson live at the state department. rich? >> secretary of state rex tillerson says his government has a few channels open to the government of kim jong-un probing about the potential of discussions in the future and also about the three americans that are still imprisoned in north korea. that's according to officials on capitol hill. discussions between the united states and north korea have slowed as of late. state department officials explain the communications with north korea are nowhere near actual negotiations with the regime over its nuclear and ballistic missile programs and
