putin and then candidate trump. a source tells fox news and sessions, who was still a senator at the time, immediately rejected it and moved on to other issues. so far no comment. and for president trump, he was the one who originally posted the image, this image, on social media calling it a national security meeting, but today, the president tries to downplay that meeting. >> i don't remember much about that meeting. it was a very unimportant meeting and took place a long time ago. don't remember much about it. >> shep: book white house has also tried to downplay papadopoulos and his role in the camping, casting him off as a low-level volunteer. and then there's carter page, a former foreign policy advisor. fox news learned that carter paid yesterday told the house intelligence committee that he let jeff sessions know about the trip he was taking to russia. he said it was completely unrelated to his role in the campaign. back in july, jeff sessions told senate intelligence committee that they need to know whether
12:03 pm
page had traveled to russia. the big issue with both is what sessions actually knew versus what he's been saying all year. one example during sessions' confirmation back in january, listen. >> if there is any evidence that anyone affiliated with the trump campaign communicated with the russian government and the course of this campaign, what will you do? >> senator franken, i'm not aware of any of those activitie activities. i have been called a surrogate as a time or two and that came, and i did not have communications with the russians. and i'm unable to comment on it. >> shep: just a couple weeks ago, senator franken, once again, pressed the attorney general over trump surrogate in their communications with russia. >> is that what you're saying saying, you don't believe that surrogates from the trump campaign had communications with the russians? is that what you're saying? >> i did not and i'm not aware
12:04 pm
of anyone else that did. and i don't believe it happen. >> you don't believe in that? >> shep: i don't believe it happened and now lawmakers want sessions to clear this up. the chief intelligence correspondent catherine herridge live in washington. >> the senate hearing in october, attorney general sessions was pressed by senior republican on the russian contact. >> did you ever overhear a conversation between you and anyone on the campaign who talked about meeting with russians? >> i am not seeing anything that would indicate a collusion with russians to impact the campaign. >> senior democrats put out statements today calling on sessions to return to the fill to the senate judiciary committee to clarify his earlier testimony. at the very least, they say there appears to be inconsistencies and -- i look element of the ongoing

investigation have brought to light evidence that you failed to tell the truth about your interactions with russian operatives during the campaign, as well as your awareness of russian contacts. it's a little more complicated than that, in the sense that it was an exchange between franken and sessions that really got the ball rolling on this issue. sessions said he found franken's question kind of long-winded and confusing, and a news report that said sessions was unfamiliar with at the time. >> shep: catherine, what else did carter page tell lawmakers? >> carter page has been telling fox news that since march this year that the russia conference that he attended was unrelated to the campaign, and after he took questions behind closed doors on the hill yesterday, he said the real story here is the trump two trump dossier paid for by the dnc and clinton campaign. >> it was terrific to have the opportunity to help clear the
12:06 pm
record as to the falsehoods from the dodgy dossier that started this whole thing against me in the final two months before the election. >> here's the thing that seems to be a conflict over whether sessions told the senate intelligence committee privately that he didn't know about this meeting that page had in russia, when sessions has now told the lawmakers that they did discuss in and at the time it did not set off any alarm bells. >> shep: we've gotten word of a trial date for the former trump campaign manager, paul manafort, and the former campaign aide, rick eights. this is known in the last hour. >> in the last hour, amy berman jackson issued an order with a trial date of may 7th and that's important because it means a court action will run up against the campaigning for the midterm election. we were at washington's district court yesterday went made a fort his business partner rick gates waived the right to a speedy trial sometime in the late spring. paul manafort's lawyers say that they challenge the legal basis of the charges against him and

the validity of the first warrant for his virginia home for so much evidence was gathered. both men have pled not guilty to the charges. they will be back in court on monday where they will take up this issue again of the home confinement chart. >> shep: catherine herridge, good to see you. let's turn to the fox news sunday host, chris wallace. >> how are you? >> shep: great, thanks. lots of questions for jeff sessions, where do you see this? >> i think you have to make it a connection between the papadopoulos tour in carter page. papadopoulos is in one meeting, he says i've got some contacts and that i've use my contacts. sessions says he shut it down. you can really understand what he might not have remembered that. and if somebody saying, you know, i've got contacts i could use, this difference of the questions that he was asked about. you know about any contacts that took place? the carter page one is more troubling, simply because of the
12:08 pm
fact that you carter page thing he told the house intelligence committee, one assumes under oath, that he's physically told jeff sessions that he was going to moscow. they we have a video just played a sessions saying that -- when asked specifically about carter page by the senate intelligence committee, saying no, we had never heard anything about carter paid going to moscow. that's a look at direct comp two contradiction. sessions was in a little trouble already because he had misspoken or misled the judiciary committee during the confirmation hearing when he said he had no contact with the russians. he then had to go back and cleared up and said i had not met with the russian ambassador and recused himself from the russia investigation. when he specifically asked a question about carter page, if he didn't remember, you would think that he would've run back and searched his memory and immediately cleared off and corrected the record. he didn't do that. i would think that carter page
12:09 pm
aspect of this is more troubling. >> shep: is at another one of these to come up to capitol hill and get grilled and grandstanding and all that kind of business? what will you anticipate? >> it depends. if the democrats calling for it. republicans control the community. i wonder if it's a political matter. if you're a democrat, you want jeff sessions to be forced out of office or to give a president an excuse to fire him? he's recused himself from the russia investigation. what happens if you get a new attorney general and at the democrats can't blame the president because they are the ones pushing them out? and then this new guy comes and says guess what, i'm not recused from russia. i think the democrats might want to be careful what they ask for. >> shep: what do you make of the claim that hillary clinton hijacked the primary? >> well, i have to say it's very shocking it has a lot of credibility. here you have donna brazile, who after debbie wasserman schultz was kicked out of the dnc and out her new book is saying, i
12:10 pm
then saw this agreement and was completely unaware of and it basically gave hillary clinton large control over the democratic national committee before a contested primary with bernie sanders. the sanders camp was complaining all along that the dnc had its finger on the scale and was trying to help clinton in terms of when they schedule debates and how many debates and things like that. here's the later succeeding the dnc chairwoman saying, it was true. and then you have a list with warren yesterday going on television and agree with donna brazile that the primary was rigged. as a real push back, i will tell you against clinton and debbie wasserman schultz and the democrats. the energy in the democratic party right now is in the left wing with bernie sanders come up with elizabeth warren. this adds fuel to the fire of them saying we got robbed of a 2016 primary. >> shep: based on the exits of the book to have come out, does
12:11 pm
this rise to the level of the illegal? where is it? >> parties are generally given pretty broad control over how they run their primaries. the one question would be, or their false filings to the federal election commission, in terms of if there was a financial arrangement. it was all of that disclosed publicly? i don't know if that's a civil penalty or a criminal what. i don't think it's a conspiracy or something like that. it might be false filing. the real impact of this is going to be political. one of the really interesting things that donna brazile is a big supporter of hillary clinton. she's the one that gave the cnn question to the clinton camp before she became an official in the dnc. the fact that she is now trashing, throwing hillary clinton under the bus, gives you an indication that the
12:12 pm
clintons future in the democratic party may be behind them. >> shep: politically speaking, what's your assessment of the state of the rnc in dnc these days? >> i haven't thought about that. >> shep: power seems to have gone to that extreme, as you mentioned. the power of the democrat is on the left of the power with republicans is in this new populace something. the structures don't seem to have what they once did. >> i would say on the republican side, i think that's very much in doubt. i think they will have a real battle for control of the republican party. it isn't so much the rnc, it's where the weight will be in the party. you certainly have the bannon wing, who's going to try and get people like wymore and alabama and other states get insurgents to be more populous republicans and very much proposed people like mitch mcconnell, the senate majority in leader. the republican establishment is fighting back and there has
12:13 pm
millions of dollars opposing the challengers and going out to receive bannon personally. eyes and the white nationalism. that will be a battle fought out throughout 2018 and all of primaries. >> shep: how was her to sit down with paul ryan? >> he is my guest. we sat down with him. there we are walking together. ryan's the guy on the left. i know some people might think he's the guy on the right. it's a very interesting. he had very interesting things to say about hillary clinton and interesting news he makes about the tax bill and a new things that might be added to it. you won't want to miss "fox news sunday." i know you never do, shep. >> shep: great to see you, chris. >> good to see you. help are the rebels doing? >> shep: you be nice. >> we haven't talked about that much this year. >> shep: we've been busy. we will have quite a basketball season and a fantastic baseball
12:14 pm
season. >> is that what you're actually working on fridays this year? >> shep: i don't work too many fridays. i work as few as possible. after 22 years, you do get a little bit of vacation. speak up you take a lot of pride. this football season, you haven't. >> shep: i would take it off if i could, but i can't, so i won't. i think these people back here would love it if we all get a friday off. are you volunteering your team for friday? it would make you very popular here, chris. >> we might be able to work something out. >> shep: tell her were thinking of her. the army surgeon, bowe bergdahl, who deserted his post in afghanistan spent years in ptolemaic custody, is getting at the dishonorable discharge. he's dropping down to space a mac private. his punishment includes absolutely no prison time. the details of that coming up from the fox news deck, on this,
