tv   The Greg Gutfeld Show  FOX News  November 5, 2017 2:00pm-3:00pm PST

2:00 pm
>> we begin with the horror and carnage in texas. 25 people have been shot and killed and 20 others wounded when they were attending a service tonight at a baptist church near san antonio. everyone congregant at the 11:00 a.m. service was killed or wounded at that time. hello, everyone. i'm eric shawn. this is a new hour of "america news headquarters." arthel: and the gunman is dead. he was "taken down." sutherland springs, near san antonio, about 400 people live there. president trump tweeting from
2:01 pm
overseas on his trip there in japan, "may god be with the people of sutherland springs, texas." f.b.i. and law enforcement are on the scene. i'm honoring the situation from japan and brian ynez from our new york city newsroom with the latest. brian? >> hi, arthel. we know that this shooter -- he's not identified, but he was "taken down," from the wilson county sheriff. we know that the attorney general of texas saying 25 are dead, maybe up to 27. the 14-year-old daughter of the pastor, frank pomeroy, was killed pomeroy, reportedly, wasn't at the shoot today. the shooting started at 11:30 a.m. this is a town of about 400 people. based on witnesses, we know that
2:02 pm
the man walked in and started shooting. 50 people attend the church. the congregation is less than 300 people. witnesses report 10 to 15 people are wounded. that's according to the associa associat"associated press." 10 victims were transported to connolly medical center. multiple victims had gun wounds. the hospital tells us. others were taken to other hospitals in san antonio, like the brook army medical center, via medevac helicopters. all of this as family members and friends gather at the sutherland springs community center, just down the street of the first baptist church. they're awaiting word on their family and friends still at this hour. arthel: brian, thank you for that update. we're getting a statement from congresswoman gabby giffords,
2:03 pm
"i'm heartbroken to hear that once again a place for peace and prayer became a scene of horror and fear. my heart is with the people of first baptist church, their followers and family. the frequency with which we watch terrifying scenes unfold in our communities is devastating and not normal. every single day 93 americans are killed with a gun in our country." and the congresswoman expresses her outrage at yet another massacre, this time in a church in a townhome to 400 people. it's struck at the core of america this sunday morning. we're waiting for a news conference there in texas. we're told that texas governor
2:04 pm
gr greg abbot is on his way to sutherland springs, as authorities are trying to piece together and find answers to why, why a lone gunman would walk into a church service just before noon this morning, where 50 members were worshipping in a small congregation of less than 300 people and he left behind carnage, 20 to 24 people dead, including the pastor's 14-year-old daughter. >> let's bring in steve rodgers now, former remember of the joint f.b.i. task force. steve, your first thoughts? gunman walks in, targets everybody. i mean, everybody, in this small church, 50 people. at least 24 of them are killed. the other 20, probably almost everybody in that church, wounded, including a 2-year-old. we're also told, as arthel just said, the 14-year-old daughter of the pastor. the guy runs out, gets in his
2:05 pm
car and is stopped 5 miles away and shot dead. your initial thoughts about any possible motivation? of course it's still early. what do you think? >> police will investigate the motive, but you asked a question that every american is asking. how do you wrap your head around this? why, why, why? the answer is becoming clear to me as i've been a career law enforcement officer. eric, we've been inundated with violence. our kids are watching violence on cartoons. we look at reality shows and see violence. we see our political people fighting with each other. it goes on and on and on. so when we look at the question of why? we may be why. we have to come together as a nation and we have to ask ourselves, where are we going with this? what will we do to solve the problem? i believe it will take hollywood to help us and -- to really help
2:06 pm
us with regard to a lot of the violence they're putting out. it will be parents that will have to sit down with their children, spend more time with them. and families noting that there may be a family member that is becoming so overwhelmed with the violence in this country where we'll have to say, look, we'll have to take you to see someone. going back to another point you brought up, you say something -- you see something, say something. a lot of people are afraid to say something, because they've been conditioned to believe if you say something, you will become part of a long, long court process, be involved in something you don't want to be involved in. we need to recondition everyone, if you see something and say something, you just have to tell the police. eric: we don't know what the motive for this is at the moment. we don't know if it's domestic terrorism or national or a nut case or a domestic dispute and decided to take his hatred out
2:07 pm
on everybody in that church or a hate crime against a religion or against a race, for example, like in charleston, south carolina, or in this case, a religi religion. what do you do? you go to the police and you say, this guy is threatening and this and this and they say, there's nothing we can do, unless he does something. >> you're right. that's what happens. when i was working detective bureau, there would be people that come in and say, i saw something that didn't sit with me, i would send detectives out to survey the situation and ask questions. they do that in the larger cities, but now we know that everyone is vulnerable, even in small towns to things like this. and you're right, until we find the motive, we'll not understand how this occurred. there was a trigger point
2:08 pm
somewhere. police will have to see if it was domestic violence, if it was a terrorist act. hopefully they will answer those questions. eric: what does your gut say? he drove away and caught in a field nearby. >> it was something that could have been domestic-related. he probably knew people in the church. in other words, close to home. it doesn't seem to me it was a terrorist act. eric: all right, steve. the investigation is continuing. we'll get an update from the news conference at city hall, expecting governor greg abbott, as well as the local officials, wilson county sheriff, with the details. stand by as we get more information. arthel: and we'll bring in ted williams, d.c. police detective and defense attorney. you've been with us here for a few hours. you've heard many comments and
2:09 pm
analysis and questions asked. here we are three plus hours in. what are you thinking now? what are the questions that you have? >> well, you know, i'm not willing to go far as to say it's not a terrorist act. irritant mentions of domestic and international terrorism. and it could very well be a domestic terrorist act of some sort. arthel, you remember and, eric, and our viewers remember, you could good to an airport and take your relative up to the cockpit of the plane and see that relative off. now we're living in a world, unfortunately, where everything is about security. and when we look at the church -- and we've been talking about this, and there is a debate about having individuals in the church armed, you know, and i think in one instance, it's good
2:10 pm
to be able to take a terrorist or a shooter perhaps even out in a church, but also in a church, somebody armed can hit innocent individuals. so there is a great debate that goes on in our land here, but one of the things that is not debatable, and that is, the sad commentary of how human beings treat other human beings. and for a cowardous human being to go into a church and just shoot at random innocent people, we have to wonder what is that saying about our humanity? arthel: as you mention, in this case, the shooter was taken out five miles away from the scene in guadalupe county. we're not sure if he killed himself or taken out by sheriff deputies. as we see on the left of our
2:11 pm
screen, we're waiting for a press conference and hopefully will find out the identity of the shooter. we'll find out if that shooter is from sutherland springs, texas, or outside. based on that information that we could possibly learn shortly, what will that tell you, ted williams. >> that will tell us if, in fact, we're dealing with an international domestic terrorist, number one, or someone mentally impaired or if we're dealing with somebody actually in that community. the fact that the vehicle was able to leave that church and somebody had to have given law enforcement something to show that they had knowledge of that vehicle, a description, shall we say, that's very significant and important. as you said and we certainly don't know, if this guy was killed by law enforcement or he
2:12 pm
took his own life. we know that in las vegas, we had the individual that killed all the folk out there and he took his own life. so all of these things are question marks and it's gonna also help to calm the nerves in that neighborhood, where it's taken police, because they want to know as to if it was one of their own or if it was somebody outside. if it was somebody outside, all of america should be concerned. arthel: ted williams, excellent point. we still have to get the answers to the questions. if you would stand by for us, as you have been the last few hours, so patiently. eric: we're awaiting the news conference and will bring it to you as soon as it happens. stan brangino joins us, host of "renegade republican." steve rogers' gut is that it's
2:13 pm
someone local. he walks in. he knows it's a small church. it's not a big target in a big city. 50 people in there. he shoots almost each and every one. and he knows how to escape and drive out of town because he's caught in a field where he's either confronted by police or shoots himself. could it be someone -- churches and pastors deal with a lot of personal problems, drug, alcohol, divorces, other issues, someone that wanted to take this out in a very local manner? i'm sure we'll find out from the news conference, because they have not publicly identified the suspect yet, but in terms of a possible motivation. >> yeah, it could absolutely be local, eric. it could also be someone that cased the location, if there's a terrorism angle, which we don't know yet. as a former secret service agent, churches, sadly, have
2:14 pm
become a convenient target. and i think one of the reasons is, think about what you have in a church. you have logical ingress and egress. you don't enter from the front of the church. you always enter from the back, so they're difficult to escape from. so they contain almost a natural choke point, where people will leave from one, specific spot. also, you have a notable lack of cover or concealment. there is nowhere to hide in a church and that's why when i see incidents like this, i'm not willing to discount terrorism because they're, sadly, convenient targets for deranged people. eric: has there been literally on-line with isis and others or a sense to target for the
2:15 pm
reasons you just mentioned? >> yeah, when you are a secret service agent, you get paid to think like assassins and people that engage in violence. you see a lot of the casing that goes on. whether they know they're doing it for that reason or not, they may not know the term, in terms, choke point or covering concealment, they understand that's what a church presents you with. there's only a couple of ways to go out. they make for convenient targets. we will not do much about the supply side issue with firearms, especially if it turns out to be terrorism. so i think it's time for churches to think about hardening up the locations. it's sad. it gives me no joy in saying that, but it's time for us to start thinking along those lines. eric: we've been talking about the church protection act that
2:16 pm
does just that, lets the church designate a person to have a concealed carry. the attack is an offense to us, to god, and to humanity. dan, thank you. stay with us as we continue our coverage. arthel: right now joining us by phone, texas congressman henry quaylar, whose district includes sutherland springs, texas. congressman, how are you feeling? have you been to sutherland springs yet? and tell us about the people there. >> first of all, i'm very familiar. i've represented sutherland springs for years. very tight knit. i've talked to the sheriff there and folks from the area. the sheriff has been there for almost 20 years or so.
2:17 pm
he told me what he knew at that time about an hour after that happened. and it's a small community that's unfortunate that this happened. i'm familiar with the church that this happened. and, again, it's very easy to someone to just walk in and cause that type of damage. i was told that they think this individual came in from a county north of san antonio and then he went there to the county east of san antonio and, you know, basically what i understand, there were more than 20, 25 people that were killed, including a pregnant lady there, and some kids that were there. that means that the small -- the kids from the districts there, will be affected. my office will be there first thing -- i wanted to go there
2:18 pm
myself. it's about three hours away, but i think right now, it's a law enforcement issue. my office that does visits every month, we visit that community every month to provide services, we'll be there at 8:00 a.m. this is very, very difficult time for that community. >> increase it is. congressman, did you just tell me the name of the suspect? >> no, no, no. no, i didn't. i was told that that person came from another county. he may have been hosting something. he came in from another county. at least that's what law enforcement told me a couple hours ago. arthel: we're waiting for a news conference to answer all of those questions that you posed
2:19 pm
and to confirm some of the information that you gave us. i would love to find out from you about the people of sutherland springs. talk to me about their character. >> it's a small community, less than 400. i've been there. it's a small community where people know each other. that church, you have folks that go in and pray and it's a small community where everybody knows each other. i've been there many times. i've been there for fundraisers, you know, for the volunteer fire service there. it's a small community where everybody knows each other. and it's very unfortunate because we're talking to some of the folks there. they were telling me, hey, this person got killed. this person got killed. they gave me names of people. and it's people that we're
2:20 pm
familiar with and it's a community of less than 400 individuals, small community. arthel: i need to take a break. stand by, if you will. thank you. ational debt? will they stay true to their words? or did they promise you one thing... only to do another? right now, congress is talking about tax cuts that will add trillions to our national debt and hurt our economy. it's time to tell congress... don't borrow more money from china. and leave more debt to our kids. keep your word. tax cuts shouldn't add to the national debt. at lincoln financial, we get there are some responsibilities of love you gotta do on your own. and some you shouldn't have to shoulder alone. like ensuring your family is protected, today and tomorrow, no matter what the future brings.

2:24 pm
happening again today, this time in a tiny town of sutherland springs, texas, where a lone gunman walked into a church service. 50 members in that church worshipping on this sunday morning, half of them now have lost their lives at the hands of a lone gunman. i'm joined on the phone by texas congressman henry cuellar, whose district includes sutherland springs, texas. again, we're so sorry for your loss. our thoughts and prayers are with you, the people of sutherland springs and the people of texas. it's a small town of 400 people. we heard from some of the church members earlier saying, we don't even long our doors here. in fact, she said, her car, whiches with part of a crime scene, she had the keys in her car while she was inside of that church service. tell us more about the people of
2:25 pm
sutherland springs and their way of life. >> absolutely right. it's almost gone back in time. it's a small community, where people know each other. to have this evil come in and you think of it happening on tv somewhere, but sutherland springs. this evil can happen anywhere, even in a small, rural community. arthel: as a lawmaker, what is it you would like to do in the wake of this mass shooting? >> first of all, we have it look at the facts. let's find out what happened.
2:26 pm
let's see what we're seeing here. there are some of my colleagues saying gun control, gun control. but before we even talk about that, let's look at the facts. and we don't know what motivated this individual. or what got him to do all this. we have to understand the facts before we talk about what to do. we have to be very, very, very careful about any solutions before we know the facts. >> and i wasn't getting at gun control. >> i didn't mean to make it sound like you were saying that, but i've heard some people already talk about that.
2:27 pm
and no, not you at all. arthel: there will be time for that. right now, families are grieving, in shock, and starting out the day the way many americans do by attending a church service on a sunday morning and now they're dealing with death. they're dealing with injuries that could be affecting them for the rest of their lives. i wanted to know more in particular asking you as a lawmaker what is it you would like to see done. i'm not sure what the answers are, but you are a texas lawmaker. how do we legally find a way to protect these churches, places of worship? >> well, you know, it's one of those things, you have a lone wolf type of situation. quite honestly, it will be harded to stop everybody that's a lone wolf. again, we don't know. how does that person come from
2:28 pm
another county? does he know people? does he have mental illness? we don't know the gun, did he acquire the gun legally, illegally? we don't know those facts at all. are we supposed to put armed guards at every church and urban areas, rural areas? that is something that could be extremely difficult to implement. so there is just a lot of choices that we have. the law enforcement there -- i know the sheriff there. i know the folks there, deputies there. they do good things. who would have expected on a sunday in a rural area, small, rural area, sutherland springs, who established there in 1851, i think, that we would have this type of shooting in a small -- if you would have asked me about a shooting in texas, i wouldn't
2:29 pm
have guessed it would have been in sutherland springs. arthel: it's the picture from what we can see -- not of the horrible crime scenes, but based on the descriptions of the church members, a place in america where innocence prevails and there's no place for evil. unfortunately, evil touched down there this sunday morning at 11: 30 central time there. congressman, i appreciate your time. we share with you in your loss. our prayers are with you. we have word from governor of new york, that's how the tragedy has touched all of us. "my heart breaks for the victims of the horrifying tragedy in texas. the mass shootings have become appalling and unforgivable,
2:30 pm
common in our society, but we must not be numb to tragedy and not accept mass shootings." congressman, i thank you for your time, sir. we'll continue after this short break. that's why i switched to the spark cash card from capital one. now, i'm earning unlimited 2% cash back on every purchase i make. everything. what's in your wallet? and when youod sugar is a replace one meal... choices. ...or snack a day with glucerna... ...made with carbsteady... ...to help minimize blood sugar spikes... ...you can really feel it. now with 30% less carbs and sugars. glucerna.

2:34 pm
to 27 people were killed. 20 people at least were injured, among them children, including a 2-year-old. one of the victims is the 14-year-old daughter of the pastor, frank pomeroy. she was annabelle pomeroy, 14 years old. authorities have not released the identity of the suspect, a lone gunman, they say. we're waiting for the news conference from stockdale city hall. we don't know the motive. we don't know his identity. we don't know if it's terrorism or something else. joining us on the telephone, lieutenant governor of the lonestar state, dan patrick. mr. lieutenant governor, our thoughts and prayers are with you and the great people of the lonestar state. what can you tell us about what happened? what can you tell us about the suspect?
2:35 pm
>> thank you for having me. our hearts are breaking, those of us that are christians, and i'm clear in my faith, as many people are in this country, millions, and around the world. we don't stand down when we're attacked. we stand up for the god that we love. matthew 10:22 says, "they will hate you because of me, but those that stand firm in the lord will be saved." and that's how, eric, we get through these times as believers. nonbelievers may have a hard time understanding that. they have a hard time understanding loving our enemies, opponents, and praying for those that come against us. we believe in our faith. and faith gets all of us through this. will get these families through. this is wickedness. it's depravity at a level that people can barely imagine. way don't know the final count. we know we have somewhere about
2:36 pm
25 killed and 30 injured, including the 14-year-old daughter, as you have reported, of the pastor. this, for me, i've seen it happen more and more, this mocking and attacks on christians, as if it's okay. and i hope this is not part of that. i hope this is not -- i hope this killer did not come to that church this morning because of what we offer to be in this country. in fact, i don't know if it was a movie that motivated him, kingsman, had a scene where someone went into a small church and murdered many people. any christian knows this that posts anything on facebook about their face, they're mocked and crude comments were made. i have been posting scripture on my page since 2009 every sunday
2:37 pm
morning. and the hatred against god in this country, it concerns me. as christians, as christians, we stand firm on a day like today in our faith. we will not be shaken by our faith in jesus christ. we will not be shaken by wicked people, evil people, that come against all americans. americans are under siege in this world. we stand for good, liberty, freedom, and the word of god, that's held this country up so long and this world up on god's word for so many years and it's a dark time. as believers, we know what the bible has said about it. for the families, we pray for them. this entire town, probably every family in this town, has someone wounded or killed or a best friend. this entire town. eric: that's an astounding town. just under 700 people in this
2:38 pm
town and you have people there and we don't know if it's terrorism. we don't know if it's a domestic dispute. this suspect went in intentionally to kill those christians as they were praying. & it does happen to be the eighth anniversary of the shooting at fort hood. anything that out know of -- congressman earlier said that the gunman came from quinnal county. any insight on any of that that could lead us to try to get some understanding, which is really, actually, frankly impossible to wrap our brains around what happened today? >> we're working in constant
2:39 pm
contact with the department of public safety. there are things at this point that i will not share until they are confirmed, but let me make it very clear when i say that christians are under attack, it is every america and good people everywhere, whatever their religion and denomination. the wickedness targets everyone. there is so much hatred in this world. and we have to come together as a -- i do see social media being so much of the coarseness of society today. i see so much in mainstream media, that i see this coarseness in society and the hollywood, the vulgarity to people that want to do the right thing, whether they're christians or jews or muslims. there's a hatefulness in this country and in this world. so what do we do as a nation in
2:40 pm
times like this? we must really look in at who we are and what we tolerate, the verbage that we tolerate, the things that are said. we must look inward. we can be better as a people, but not if we stand quiet. i heard a lot of discussion. i was watching earlier today, you can have a right to protect yourself at our churches in texas. eric: we're up against a hard break. my thanks. we don't know the motive yet. we'll find out. whatever it was, it was evil and it was hatred. we'll be back. hat accident i gon with the pole, and i had to make a claim and all that? is that whole thing still dragging on? no, i took some pics with the app and... filed a claim, but... you know how they send you money to cover repairs and... they took forever to pay you, right? no, i got paid right away, but... at the very end of it all, my agent... wouldn't even call you back, right? no, she called to see if i was happy.
2:41 pm
but if i wasn't happy with my claim experience for any reason, they'd give me my money back, no questions asked. can you believe that? no. the claim satisfaction guarantee, only from allstate. switching to allstate is worth it.

2:45 pm
sutherland springs. abc news is reporting that the new-deceased shooter is being described as a white male in his 20s from outside of san antonio, texas, which is about 30 to 40 miles southeast of sutherland springs, texas, the scene of the massacre. and that abc news also reporting that this suspect showed off an ar-15-style gun on facebook recently and that he possibly has a military background. vincent hill, we have not been able to confirm this hourselves here at fox news, but based on that information that i just reported from abc news, what does that say to you? >> it could say several things. if he was military, he was radicalized while he was deployed for the u.s. military. or think back to 1995 and a guy
2:46 pm
named timothy mcvay, who was a military veteran that killed a bunch of people for whatever reason he did that. so there are several things that come in to question. the main thing is the fact that this individual was posting pictures of assault rifles on his facebook. now is that illegal? no, not by any means, but it goes back to what i said earlier. if you say something, say something. if you hear something, repeat it. and i'm sure he wasn't just posting these pictures there without himself in the picture, without comments on the posts that he made on facebook. arthel: and it takes the investigation into a different direction. talk about that for us, vincent. >> now you definitely want to find out what a motive was, if he had military training. did he suffer from ptsd? those are serious issues that people don't take into consideration, but ptsd could
2:47 pm
have played a factor. could have been radicalized if he was military and deployed in an area where isis is known to have operated in. so there's a lot of stuff we need to find out. arthel: can we rule out this? this now-deceased shooter was a white male in his 20s outside of san antonio, a 25-minute right away. is it possible that he did know someone there in southern springs, texas, and he did have an ax to grind with someone who may have been a member of that church? we don't know, but these are questions that i'm guessing that authorities may be asking now. >> we're not talking a great distance of time to travel. 20 miles, he may have known someone at that church. someone at that church may live in the same town where this individual lives.
2:48 pm
still a lot of questions. we need to be patient and let investigators weed through the evidence. weed through interviews to find out what the motive was. >> you are right about that. and someone who has been in the position of weeding through a lot of evidence is former d.c. homicide detective ted williams, also a criminal defense attorney. ted williams, i believe you were able to hear the details that we have been able to share via abc news on this now-deceased shooter, white male in his 20s from downside of san antonio, texas, not far from sutherland springs, texas, showing off and ar-15 gun on facebook with a possible military background. what does it say to you, ted? >> everything that vincent represented here. the question is, was this person radicalized? no doubt about it. when you go into a church and
2:49 pm
you do what this guy's done, it's an act of domestic terrorism. the question is, does he have 95 international associations? the other question, and you mentioned this, arthel, does he know somebody from that community that he had a beef with? i was shaking in my boots in my chair with the congressman saying or inferred that it may have been somebody from another county. that led me to believe that the congressman and others know who this individual is. i'm sure that they're at his home, checking his computers, phone, and checking to see about this weapon. you have atf on the scene. there's a complete investigation there. it may turn in a different
2:50 pm
direction now. arthel: the president has been briefed several times and has continued to receive updates on the tragic shooting in texas. the president has spoken with greg abbott earlier this morning and we'll keep you updated after this break. nacho?
