trade and technology. jillian: tough talk on north korea dominating donald trump's asia tour. rob: in vietnam he will come face-to-face with vladimir putin, maybe at this point. here to weigh in on that, former ambassador to the united nations john bolton. thanks for coming on this morning. we start with the news of the day which is rex tillerson saying this may or may not happen, there was never an agreement to meet, if they are going to meet, if there is something substantive to talk about that would warrant a meeting, there is no conclusion made on that. do you think these two are going to meet in vietnam? >> it would be surprising if they didn't. i didn't understand what rex tillerson means as there's plenty of substance to discuss with the russians starting with north korea but dealing with iran, the middle east, east and central europe, they have a long

agenda. when you go to one of these multilateral meetings the real business is done in a series of behind the scenes bilateral meetings. i don't know what the purpose of walking this back is, whether they think they will reach agreement or not is the issue. the president ought to take the opportunity to put it directly to vladimir putin on a range of issues. jillian: if they are to meet what should the message be? >> on north korea, iran as well, russia has to stop support for these regimes and their ballistic missile and nuclear weapons programs. we had a day of meetings in china, 13 hours ahead of us on the east coast, we have very little out of rex tillerson on what they discussed on north korea, that is not surprising. something going on they want to keep quiet or china hasn't budget from its long-standing

position of saying they will do something but not following through. russia is in the same position. if that continues, that continues to march toward nuclear weapons. rob: vladimir putin's country is a mess financially and for other reasons. what is his interest in supporting a country like north korea that almost nobody else on the good side of the world supports? >> resume be in a mess for a lot of reasons, the low price of oil on the global market but they are not a consumer society. vladimir putin is in charge, the state of affairs of his citizens is less concerned than it is in the united states. what does vladimir putin want out of north korea? a trade route by land through north korea to south korea, excellent for russian economic purposes but a lot of concern over a long time about china's

designs on russian far eastern part of the country and what may happen, mineral resources, not much population, china with a big population, mineral resources. there is a lot going on in northeast asia that trump and vladimir putin could talk about. jillian: we had a live picture of donald trump and melania arriving at the state dinner in beijing. what is your opinion how his message has been received the last couple days? >> japan and south korea the message was clear and strong. everybody got it, japan is on board with us, north korea, south korea a little more difficult but the chinese are not giving any signals one way or the other. sometimes when something is happening behind the scenes you don't want to talk about it prematurely. unless that is true it doesn't
