8:00 am
have a good day. >> happy thanksgiving. >> jon: president trump taking on a new target in some early morning tweets from south florida where he is spending the thanksgiving holiday with his family. i'm jon scott. >> julie: the president lashes out at the father of one of the ucla basketball players detained for shoplifting in china calling him an ungrateful fool for not thanking the president after his son's release and taking aim at the nfl bashing a plan to keep teams in the locker rooms during the national anthem. >> jon: kevin corke is live in d.c. for us now. kevin. >> the president is obviously on the links this morning but he says he will be very busy during his holiday vacation at
8:01 am
the winter white house. in in addition to making calls and holding meetings he will give us an update on the missing sailors out in the pacific. clearly sports are on the president's mind this morning. as you point out he is upping the ante in his twitter battle with lavar ball. let me show you part of what the president had to say talking about the ucla dad whose son was, of course, caught stealing over in china. the president tweeting this. it wasn't the white house, it wasn't the state department, it wasn't father la var's people on the ground in china that got his son out of a long-term prison sentence. it was me all caps. he goes on to say too bad, la var is just a poor man's version of don king but without the hair. just think, he continues, you could have spent the next five to 10 years at thanksgiving with your son in china and no nba contract to support you. shoplifting is not a little thing. it is a big deal especially in
8:02 am
china. ungrateful fool. wow. mr. ball not the only target of the president's twitter ire. he is talking about the nfl and roger goodell and his role for not getting his players to stop kneeling and protesting during the national anthem. back to twitter and i can show you what the president had to say about this. this raising eyebrows in morning. the nfl is thinking about keeping teams in locker room during the national anthem next season. that's almost as bad as kneeling. what will the highly paid commissioner finally get tough and smart? this issue is killing your league. now on the political front the president weighed in yesterday on the roy moore controversy and while it's true he did pass on a chance to publicly endorse moore, he didn't really criticize him either. he said the voters of alabama will choose their next senator and asked if he might campaign for the republican in the race.
8:03 am
president said this. >> president trump: we don't need a liberal person in there, a democrat jones. i've looked at his record. ist is terrible on crime, it is terrible on the border. >> he called jones -- soft on crime there and when he was asked if he might go ahead and get down there in the yellow hammer state and do campaigning for roy moore the president by passed a chance to way in definitively. he said he would let us know next week. the election is coming up on december 12. we will have plenty of time to talk about it, guys, back to you. >> jon: thanks very much. kevin corke joining us from washington, d.c. >> julie: as he just reported, the president finally broke his silence on alabama senate candidate roy moore seeming the take moore at his word. >> president trump: he denies
8:04 am
this. look, he denies this. if you look at what is really going on and you look at all the things that have happened over the last 48 hours, he totally denies it. he says it didn't happen and, you know, you have to listen to him also. you are talking about he said 40 years ago this did not happen. >> julie: joining us now the obama campaign -- and ari fleischer and a fox news contributor. robin, are you surprised by the fact that president trump is throwing his support by roy moore? >> i'm not in the least surprised because donald trump has always been anti-gop and the gop came out against roy moore. frankly, i sort of was expecting this. i just was disappointed by it. i honestly do try to give this president every benefit of the doubt. i thought he would take the high road here and maybe recuse himself from this.
8:05 am
but no, it's still us versus them. it's still what he is giving us the argument he is giving us is that hey, at least he is not a democrat. he says he didn't do these things. he has told us the same things about vladimir putin. so he clearly believes vladimir putin and he believes roy moore just on their word alone. i'm not surprised, i'm just disappointed, julie. >> julie: he is supporting the republican in the race. not as if he hasn't in the past said if roy moore is guilty of what he is being accused of, he should step aside. but as we all know roy moore wasn't actually the president's first choice. he did campaign for luther strange in the special election and it was steve bannon that campaigned for moore. why wasn't moore president trump's initial pick? >> you know, he honestly was going along with what mitch mcconnell said. he gave it a shot. he didn't want to. when he gave that support, it
8:06 am
seemed pretty tepid and he even said during that campaign rally i'm not sure i'm making the best decision here. that's about the least exciting endorsement i think i've ever heard in all my years in politics. so, you know, but all of this has come out post fact about roy moore and these allegations and they do go back 40 years. but that doesn't excuse the behavior. doug jones doesn't have a record like that. he is a very conservative democrat contrary to what donald trump has been saying touting him as a liberal. i'm not sure where we stand on this. >> julie: no matter what the reason why, the bottom line is that this election in alabama, a lot is riding on it and the gop needs this win. however, the disappointing factor is that you have al franken, a democrat accused of much less and you have the
8:07 am
president tweeting about al franken and calling him frankenstein and something that happened 40 years. they are still accusations not from one accuser or two under al franken's situation, there is over nine. i want to play some quick sound here about the president and why he is backing roy moore. we are going to try to effort ari fleischer. we're having technical difficulties with that. here is what president trump said. i can tell you one thing for sure, we don't need a liberal person in there, a democrat. democrat candidate for senate in alabama. i looked about his record. terrible on crime, border, military. he points out doug jones is not the perfect candidate. is it coming down to an alleged pedophile versus a democrat? is that the choice that the american people of alabama are being forced to choose between?
8:08 am
>> yes, that is absolutely the choice and it's ridiculous. my fear, julie, is the gop has touted for decades they're the family values party. i'm afraid they're at risk of losing that. when anthony wiener had the first pictures that came out we denounced him and distanced ourselves from him. we've been coming out in droves saying al franken needs to resign. three times this week saying he needs to resign. you see the gop propping up roy moore saying -- i've seen pastors using ancient biblical scripture to justify what he is saying. it is inexcusable. there is no excuse for this if it did happen. and one point i want to make. his publicist went so far as to say democrats and the liberals don't understand alabama dating. that's absurd to me.
8:09 am
i'm really worried the republicans might be at risk of losing their family values platform. >> julie: there was a priest that came out and said when he had gone off to serve in the military when he came back everyone he knew back in his younger years had gone off and been married and so there really was nobody left and why he tended to date younger girls because there was a purity about them and there is a belief in that back in the day 40 years ago that men did like to court younger girls. in fact, until this day how many men do you know dating somebody 30 years younger than them? how many women as they are called cougars insultingly date younger men. there is a double standard but it is true men tend to go for younger women. i hate to say that. is there a double standard here? are we reading too much into this? >> i do see your point about their being a double standard. the fact that he got the
8:10 am
parents' permission to date a teenager, i just can't get on board with that. i don't understand why republicans are excusing it. even though it did happen 40 years ago and things may be different in alabama. still like doug jones has a pure record. and he is a conservative democrat. it is not simply not true about being a liberal democrat. >> julie: fleischer now is joining me. we've been having such technical difficulties. i want you to weigh in on this. where do you stand when it comes to the president supporting roy moore? >> i think is president is in an impossible catch 22. he said roy moore should drop out of the race and immediately raises the issues why didn't president trump drop out of the race? if he stands by roy moore he gets accused of all the things he is accused of now looking the other way. it's a mess for the democrats who have to defend al franken and john conyers and a mess for
8:11 am
republicans who may have roy moore in the seat. the right moral thing is for roy moore to drop out of the race. it would be the right, ethical thing. you have to let the people of alabama sort it out. figure it out. the only alternative i can think of is roy moore gets elected and gets thrown out of the senate and the republican governor appoints somebody. look, that's why this whole thing is a mess. it has been a mess from the start and we're stuck with a mess. >> julie: unfortunately in corporations when somebody is called out such as charlie rose or harvey weinstein, they get fired. these politicians don't have to live under the same rules. ari, that's a problem. does that ever seem to be something that might be changed in the future? you are saying the governor could appoint a new senator if that were the case down the road. that just doesn't seem right. >> well, that also means roy moore gets elected. there is some -- let the people
8:12 am
of alabama decide it. they are the jury and it is somewhat appropriate. it doesn't make me any more or less a supporter. i don't care for roy moore because i believe the women in this case. i thought the story was well reported. another problem the democrats have with john conyers. he said today about conyers, that the charges the claims may not have any real substance. you can't jump to conclusions with these types of things he said. for all i know all this could be made up and that's what a democratic member of the house leadership said about john conyers. he and president trump are saying the same things about the people in their parties and support. the democrats and republicans are just as guilty. >> julie: doesn't matter which party you are in it is inexcusable. thank you both. jon. >> jon: tax reform is on hold for this holiday. president trump is eager to get
8:13 am
the legislation passed. what's next in the battle of the bills? kevin brady joins us. >> president trump: the democrats giving us no votes for tax cuts for purely political reasons. obstructionists. it will be up to the republicans to come through for america. i think they will. i hope they will. it is up to the senate.
8:16 am
>> jon: lawmakers are facing some tax reform challenges when they get back to capitol hill. the house already approved its bill. the senate is set to vote on a separate version next week and should that plan pass, the next step is reconciling the two different bills. but the white house is hopeful congress will pass a final tax bill before the end of the year. >> we feel very confident.
8:17 am
it is up to those legislators who for years have been saying they will get meaningsful tax cuts and overhaul. we're happy the house and senate have come up with trump speed, not swamp speed in getting their bills to the floor fairly quickly. we feel really great that both bills adhere to the president's four core principles for tax cuts and tax relief, repatriation, middle class tax cut and reducing the corporate tax rate. >> jon: kevin brady of texas joins me now. chairman of the house ways and means committee and obviously a big champion of tax reform. congressman, there are some big differences between what you passed in the house and what the senate is looking at doing. which to you is the most significant? >> so there are some differences, jon, i have to tell you one last week was crucial first house passing the first sweeping tax reform since ronald reagan did it more than
8:18 am
three decades ago. the senate now takes it up after the thanksgiving holiday. there is a lot of common ground on the middle class tax cuts, redesigning the code so our businesses can compete and win anywhere in the world including here at home. and i think bigger paychecks for everybody. but there are some differences. i think the number of brackets that individuals pay on, how we help our small businesses in a major way. there is some difference but all focused how we can do better than the current tax code and how we compete and win internationally is a challenge as well. i'm looking forward to the senate passing their bill and but for president trump having sat down with us and work toward one tax reform plan, we wouldn't be moving really in a timely way certainly wouldn't be shooting at the same pro-growth target. >> jon: talking about a timely way. it passed the house very quickly and now moving quickly through the senate. people are astounded who watch capitol hill that all of a
8:19 am
sudden this thing seems to be on roller skates. >> you know, washington is such a skeptical and at times cynical city. they don't ever think we can fix this broken tax code. they just assume we have to live with all the special interest breaks and complexity and china, europe, canada and mexico are putting us in the rearview mirror because of the tax code. it is great to see lawmakers united to get rid of this mess. i think it's encouraging. back in texas my neighbors and local businesses are thrilled we're taking action. >> jon: the exemptions, for instance, the child tax exemption, the senate version would set it at $2,000 per child. the house has it at $1600. is that a big deal to you, for instance, coming up with a compromise on that number? >> you know, tax code should be
8:20 am
pro family and eliminate the marriage penalties which ours does as well. we have to let everyone keep more of the money they earn. ought to grow paychecks, the family tax credit the house proposed is really not only helpful in raising kids, which is so expensive, it helps with parents, it helps with that college kid who may be living at home with you as well. all expensive proposition. i have no doubt we'll be able to find common ground with the senate and i think what a lot of people don't notice, they look at the amount of the child or family credit. you ought to be asking so who can use it? right now it's restricted. families up to $110,000 for a household. sometimes that doesn't even reach two middle class workers. now it will go up to $230,000, even more in the senate. bottom line is taxpayers who never got any help raising their children are going to be able to get that under either tax plan. >> jon: one of the things that you did not put in the house
8:21 am
plan is a repeal of the individual mandate under obamacare. the senate does have that. recently got the support of lisa murcowski from alaska. that's a pretty big get in terms of republican politics. how important is it to you that that individual mandate repeal ultimately be in or out of the final bill? >> i agree with you, i think senator mu kowski's support is critical. we repeal obamacare. we're anxious for the senate to take action. there is very strong support and mainly because the individual mandate is a tax. it really hits those modest and middle income families who can't, frankly, afford nor do they want obamacare. look, at the end of the day we
8:22 am
want the greatest tax relief we can provide for these middle income families and that fits in a big way. >> jon: congressman kevin brady, thank you, happy thanksgiving. >> julie: uber covering up a massive data breach. what the hackers stole and how much the company paid to get it back. can be. for fast-acting, long-lasting relief, try doctor recommended gaviscon. it quickly neutralizes stomach acid and helps keep acid down for hours. relieve heartburn with fast- acting, long-lasting gaviscon.
8:25 am
>> we're talking about the hack of 57 million people's data. this is riders and drivers across the world. uber kept quiet about this hack for more than a year and paid $100,000 to the hackers to keep it that way. >> julie: hush money basically. uber covering up a massive data breach. it happened in late 2016 but we're just learning about it now.
8:26 am
two hackers getting information on both drivers and customers. that's stolen data included things like your name, your email address and even your phone number. jonathan hunt joins us from los angeles. this isn't good. >> it really isn't. millions of uber customers are checking their personal information after the company revealed this massive hack attack that stayed secret for 12 months. >> disappointing. i'm all about transparency. it's unfortunate and i'm using lyft. i'll continue to do that. >> i'm shocked. >> the hackers had access to customers' names, email addresses and phone numbers as well as the names, addresses and driver's licenses of uber drivers and they admitted they paid a $100,000 ransom to keep
8:27 am
the information about the huge hack from going public and to get a guarantee the hackers wouldn't use the information. the hackers appear to have kept that promise so far. uber ceo says its chief security officer resigned in the wake of the hack and the lawyer who signed off on the secret deal was fired. and the new ceo says he is taking full responsibility for cybersecurity moving forward saying in a statement, quote, while i can't erase the past, i can commit on behalf of every uber employee that we will learn from our mistakes. now, uber says it's in the process of notifying various regulatory agencies but officials in the u.k., for instance, julie, have already said the breach and uber's attempts to keep it secret raise major concerns about the company's future in europe and they could slap uber with a fine of more than half a million dollars and i'm just seeing some initial reporting by the hill, an online publication out of d.c., that
8:28 am
the new york attorney general's office is also opening an investigation into uber's handling of this whole thing. >> julie: it's also erie. remember the new york terror attack suspect happened to work for uber. there were a lot of questions as to how they background check. >> that's true. there have been a lot of questions for uber. they have a lot of problems they have to deal with, that's for sure. >> julie: jonathan hunt, thank you. >> jon: when we come back, three navy sailors remain missing after a transport plane crashes in the pacific. we'll have the latest on rescue efforts to find those three missing americans. plus with capitol hill reeling from sexual misconduct allegations against two prominent lawmakers there is a new effort to make it easier to hold offenders accountable. hello, i'm an idaho potato farmer.

lucas tomlinson is live at the pentagon. lucas. >> it has been about 12 hours since the crash. hundreds of miles out to sea while flying to the uss ronald reagan from japan. defense officials say early indications point to some kind of engine failure as the cause. helicopters aboard the ronald reagan have rescued eight of the 11 sailors on board. three remain missing and the search effort continues but hampered now by darkness. the eight recovered sailors are in good condition on board the aircraft carrier. the crash occurred 575 miles southeast of japan in the philippine sea wednesday afternoon. the japanese military is assisting for the search for the three missing american sailors. it occurred two days after an air force training jet crashed killing one pilot and injuring another in texas. they're up 38% this year for crashes compared to a year ago. the greyhound is a cargo plane

8:35 am
staffer. the detroit free press is calling on conyers to resign. in a statement on the rash of sexual harassment claims, house minority leader nancy pelosi says as members of congress we each have a responsibility to uphold the integrity of the house of representatives and to ensure a climate of dignity and respect with zero tolerance. for harassment, discrimination, bullying and abuse, any credible allegation of sexual harassment must be investigated by the ethics committee. house speaker paul ryan saying in this statement people who work in the house deserve and are entitled to a workplace without harassment or discrimination. joining us now democratic strategist michael hopkins and alexandra smith, executive director america rising pac. alexandra, to you first. the astounding thing that's come out of all of these revelations is that members of congress can essentially pay
8:36 am
off their accusers without anybody knowing about it. >> right. i think it goes to show what a double standard these members of congress are engaging in. my organization is one that does opposition research so if a candidate were out on the campaign trail we'd absolutely be looking into his or her background for allegations like this for settlements like this. because they're members of congress all of a signed they get to hide behind the office of compliance. we need radical transparency and we need to know who the congressmen are and how much paid off. >> jon: $17 million paid out over the last 20 years, michael, to settle workplace complaints on capitol hill. that's not necessarily all sexual harassment. but because there is no breakdown of who gets what and how much, we don't know. that's a lot of money. >> absolutely. it's time for representative conyers and others to waive
8:37 am
their non-disclosure agreements and let the truth come out of the shadows. washington may be broken but i think whether you are republican or democrats we have to be committed to fighting sexual harassment. it is not about republican or democrat it's about right or wrong. we need people to believe that when they come to work they'll come to work in a safe environment and treated fairly and equally. >> jon: there is also no requirement the identities of the lawmaker or staffer involved be disclosed, alexandra. >> what i find troubling about that, it really protects abusers. when you can't warn people who are involved, people who are working in extremely close quarters in the offices on capitol hill that someone might be a problem or a particular office has a particular problem with this issue. you know, i mean, of course capitol hill is like any other workplace. as you mentioned in that $17 million number, we know that there are other harassment claims and other discrimination claims paid out of that.
8:38 am
however, members of congress are not like any other employer. these are people that are elected by the american people. elected by their constituents to be guardians of the public trust and when we can't trust them to act in accordance with dignity and respect in the workplace there is something seriously wrong. we need to know who these people are and it doesn't matter if they're republican or democrat they need to go. >> jon: congresswoman from california said she has endured unpleasant incidents at the hands of members of congress. she wants to make members of congress personally liable, michael, if they are essentially convicted of sexual harassment. and she is wanting some republican support. is that one of the answers >> we should be talking about it. taxpayers have enough of a burden on them right now. i don't think adding to the burden that taxpayers have by forcing them to pay for the bad decisions of congressmen and
8:39 am
women is the answer to this. people need to be held accountable. it is not a political issue and we have to make sure we aren't weaponizing these accusations but looking at them honestly saying we'll hold you accountable no matter what party you belong to. >> jon: we mentioned that the detroit free press is just out with an editorial calling on congressman conyers to resign. is that premature or should there be more of an investigation say by the house ethics committee as to what exactly happened here? >> i think ethics investigations are a start. in the congressman's case there has been documented evidence of a pattern that has been ongoing in his office for several decades. i think that's what makes his case so particularly disturbing. i don't think that calls for resignation are at all out of order in this case because we've seen there are documented
8:40 am
incidents that are on record. >> jon: should he resign? >> i think the investigation should happen and we come to our conclusions. across the board whether it be conyers, even the president of the united states or potential senator mr. moore, i think all of these need to come out weekend we need to see what happened and be able to read affidavits and have a frank conversation. one day i'm going to have a daughter hopefully and i don't want her to worry about how she will be treated in the workplace. that's wrong. this is 2017 and we're better than that. >> jon: byzantine rules covering this issue on capitol hill, that's for sure. thank you both. >> julie: new video just released of the north korean soldier who defected to the south via the demilitarized zone while his comrades were shooting at him. take a look at that video. we'll tell you what makes this video the first of its kind plus president trump and president putin talk about the situation in syria. what can be done to stabilize

the war-torn country? >> president trump: we had a great call with president putin. we're talking strongly about bringing peace to syria. 75 million of us suffer from the gritty and frustrating symptoms of dry eye. we need theratears®. theratears® is more than just eye drops. it's eye therapy. dry eye symptoms are caused by a salt imbalance. theratears® unique electrolyte formula,

>> jon: dramatic new video showing a north korean defector running across the border. troops briefly cross in the south korea shooting at him in the demilitarized zone. south korean soldiers dragged the defector to safety without returning fire. the first shooting in the dmz in more than 30 years and they released a video of the defection. >> julie: president trump and vladimir putin spoke for more than an hour by phone yesterday. they talked about the road
8:45 am
ahead for syria. here is what putin had to say after meeting with the syrian president on monday. a lot has been done to stabilize the situation in syria and i hope that in the near future we'll put a final full stop in the fight against terrorism in syria. so what should u.s. strategy on syria be moving forward? joining me now is the director of foreign policy research at the brookings institute. michael hamilton. thank you for talking to us. do you find that comment interesting by putin that a lot has been done to stabilize the situation in syria? really? >> great of you to pick that up. most americans would not agree with vladimir putin but here is i think what he is get pg at. what he is getting at, there is less fighting and in some sense the war is being partly concluded in certain areas of the country. but most of the reason for that is not good news from our point of view. part of it is good news because the defeat of isis and its holdings in the eastern part of the country, of course, is welcome to everyone.
8:46 am
on that issue the united states and russia see eye-to-eye. however, president assad, the brutal dictator in syria is winning the war in most of the country defeating the very same opposition forces that we have been at times supporting throughout the last six years. and even if the opposition isn't necessarily a bunch of good guys, assad has a lot more blood on his hands than anyone else in this war. if stability means that assad wins and reestablishes control of the whole country that's not in our interest and i don't think it's even possible. there is so much hatred of assad at this point. an insurgency would continue unless there were autonomous areas in syria where sunnis and others could live in peace. >> julie: north korea is now a state sponsor of terror. we talked about how it's mostly a political, symbolic move.
8:47 am
what really is the conversation going on between putin and the president when it comes to putting pressure on syria? russia holds that key. they hold that card and they know it. and they seem to deny so. what kind of pressure does the u.s. put on russia? >> you are right that russia has influence here. they would prefer we all believe that china has the predominant influence. china probably has the most. but russia has a lot of north korean workers on its territory who send home remittances to help prop up the regime. it is certainly true, as you intimate, that in fact russia could do a lot more to clamp down on that flow of money back to north korea as well as staying more engaged at the security council in tougher sanctions should it become necessary. that is definitely a key attribute of what we have to focus on with russia. >> julie: also when it comes to russia, these two discussed a range of pressing international concerns.
8:48 am
it is not just syria, though, but terrorism over the course of the entire world and the role in which russia plays in it. i'm not just talking syria here. they are going to go over affairs in afghanistan, ukraine, north korea and then how to deal with isis. that's something that we haven't been talking about so much because we've been so into poll particular these days. isis is still out there. the worst terror attack in new york city since 9/11. what conversation did they have about cracking down on terror do you believe? >> i think putin going back to your point about syria and what he said about that, putin wants us to believe that anybody in syria who is against the government is a terrorist. that's what assad says and that's not true. this is where president trump has to draw the distinction between the groups we all agree, including russia, that we can't tolerate.
8:49 am
