great importance to our country. senate republican also hopefully come through for all of us. the tax cut bill is getting better and better. the big end result will be great for all of us. here's the thing. he is going to be meeting with the big four on capitol hill. nancy and mitch and the others. and schumer and paul. and some others as well. because what they are trying to do is there is a showdown over federal funding. because they need the money to run the government. they will probably do another patch. essentially it runs out of money on december the 8th. ainsley: about a week from now. steve: so, the democrats are trying to do is they are saying if you want us to vote on that, you will have tattach the dreamers stuff to it the republicans say absolutely not. it could be -- brian: attach the dreamer thing and i saw senator thune over the weekend said no. do you know who might say yes in the president. the president before meth with chuck and nancy and said i want to get this

done. let's wait three months knowing this day would be coming. ainsley: i'm not sure the majority of republicans would be against it these are kids that came over because of their parents. just to send them back without having any residency in their country that their parents came from would be difficult. steve: mark meadows who heads up the house freedom caucus says daca will not be in the funding bill. the president gave congress until march to do something. if they do a stand alone legislation, that would be fine with him. but then again, if they do it this way we just know that the house freedom caucus completely against it. ainsley: there could be a government shutdown because there are not enough republicans that could agree on other things. steve: they need to get democrats on board and generally they have. because some of the republicans don't want to increase the deficit. they have to get some democrats, kind of a mess. ainsley: can't agree on funding for our troops. they want more and more. steve: did you see the shot at the beginning where people were throwing helmets

we are going to be dealing with this. toward that end i chair a task force as part of the homeland security committee. we have looked at all the pathways through which terrorists can get into this country. the most difficult thing to confront is the reality that terrorists cross our borders thousands of times every day digitally that capacity to inspire and attack is a very difficult problem to get at. brian: you know how much new york means to them you know how they reveled in the bike path killer. >> exactly. brian: penn station, grand central station and new york city as a mecca. what does that make you feel and how is the intraxz between our counter terror unit in the new york city, the fbi and homeland security? >> i think new york deserves a lot of credit really developing. nypd and a lot of the affiliate agencies developing a world class. brian: communicate well to the feds? >> there is always room for improvement. the most important thing for us to do in the short-term is stay on offense in the middle east. as long as we allow isis to gain and maintain territory. the more they grow in the

hearts and minds o muslims. we need to take a hard look at our own capabilities, particularly our intelligence authorities, some of which are critical and about to expire and we need to reauthorize in congress but also that cooperation between local law enforcement and federal law enforcement. but, in every case, we have this narrative of lone wolf attack. what we have seen in all these case us often it's not a lone wolf. these are people that were on the system that had popped up onto the radar for whatever reason, but they fell off because law enforcement didn't want to continue the investigation or people in the local muslim community didn't want to report the activity. we need to have that trust between the local community and law enforcement. and that, in many ways, is the best line of defense. i would say the military guy, people every day thank me for my sufficiency, but the law enforcement folks are on the front lines every single day doing a dangerous job. brian: job they are under constant jute any for they are asked to be on the tip of the spear we saw that in new york city last week.

already. joining us is cathy barnett who served 10 years in the armed forces and looked at statistics that show that maybe this is not the right issue and the numbers don't bear out. these protests are about police brutality and social injustice. are they getting their message out? >> no. i think that there are some very real issues in the black community. some very real systemic devastating issues in the black community. the one that we are seeing almost every day about police brutality that probably isn't even in the top five of the major issues that is impacting the black community. we have 73% of black children growing up without a father. so family instability is number one. but followed by a whole host of other issues, whether we are talking about the lack -- the poor education system, high unemployment rate, low home ownership. steve: right. >> all of those issues are much larger than what we are being shown.

steve: cathy, you are not only a vet. you are a mother. pictures over you in the corner of the studio. how do you explain to your kids what's going on? >> one of the things i try to explain to my children that we are not victims because as a black mother, raising two beautiful black babies, they will see this narrative being pushed out to them that because of the color of their skin somehow they are inferior. and my message to them is that you are not a victim. we are victors. as black people in america, we have inherited a wonderful inheritance. and the thing with inheritance is that you didn't work for it someone else came before you and worked for it paid the price for it and now today, they have an obligation, every black american has an obligation to live a life that is worthy. and for these particular nfl players, they have a significant platform. they can go into any community and immediately shine a spotlight on what's

really -- on what the real issues are. again, police brutality is not even in the top five. brian: show the numbers you were just going over with me before about police interactions with african-americans. >> the narrative is that on every street corner there is a white police officer waiting to shoot a black man. that's the narrative. and that's the narrative behind the whole hands up, don't shoot. brian: what are the numbers? >> the numbers are in 2016, 7800 black men were killed. out of the 7800, 233 were fatally shot by a police officer. so that's down to 3%. of the 233, 16 were unarmed black men. now, the 16 does not take into consideration any violent -- you know, any violent arrests, you know, people not wanting to be arrested. but, let's just say one black person, white person, asian person, any person shot by police for any

and other aspects of it. this will get done. we have got to get this done for the nation. brian: the whole thing is i have heard you, senator corker, senator flake and senator murkowski say they want to get and season senator collins say they want to get to a yes. i have not heard that from rand paul and john mccain. what can you tell us on that? >> actually you have to talk to rand and john about that. i don't know where they are on that. i will tell you as we have gone through the process everybody, that includes everybody is trying to figure out a way to mike this the best possible document. this effects everybody america. so it should be right. not something that should be rushed but it should be done. hopefully be able to get that through. brian: the biggest obstacle for you right now senator lankford is? >> is the actual debt back stop. i want to make sure we have a built-in process to -- if the numbers don't come in correctly to make sure that we do actually provide a way to be able to guard us against deaf an debt and defici. we are trying to be able to get that in there and get the language right.

brian: i imagine it's going to come down to spending. that might be for a different day. you believe it will pass before christmas. >> i do, actually. i think should. brian: be a vote thursday? >> we will see if there is a vote thursday. they are trying to work with the parliamentarian right now to work out exact language. that sometimes takes extra day to work that through. thursday, friday. worse case scenario delay it put to next week that's not delaying the process. brian: every year there is an annual government waste list out. some things stood out to you that you are putting out today that you want everyone's attention on where we could save money. for example, doggy hamlet? can we take a look at this and how much does d. it cost us? >> this is $30,000 worth of nea grants. new hampshire. i have no problem with them performing doggy hamlet in new hampshire. i'm not sure why people of connecticut federal tax dollars pay for production that's in new hampshire. i certainly don't want the

people of oklahoma to be able to pay for that this is $30,000. it's a small example. we have examples like that. we go all the way up to $458 billion in what's called the tax gap with the irs. so we have evra right from very small to very, very large areas of waste. and areas where the federal government just dropped the ball. didn't complete their job. brian: also something that really aggravates you is the irs rehired over 1,000 people they fired for their bad conduct since 2010. what is that about? >> these are individuals that were not only fired because they were mishandling information. there are some tame must examples of all of that there is also examples of individuals working for the irs that don't actually pay their federal taxes. so they were fired. the irs turns around and rehires them. this was an issue we brow up several years ago. they said they cleaned it up. we found another 200 employees at the irs fired and thunder around and rehired again. again, we shouldn't have to do that. that's just a

>> it was a little nerve-racking especially for my life who is not involved in this space witch of the things unfortunate about all the vitriol and hot air out there. if you keep going throughout pedaling this ms. information like this is the guy who is going to break the internet and destroy democracy. it's not surprising that some people would get alarmed by it. steve: i know you were on this program last week and you explained what these new revisions to the net neutrality business would be. for folks who did not watch. would you explain what you would like to do with the internet? >> it's very simple. we are going to return to president clinton's internet framework, which existed from 1996 all the way until 2015. under that light touch market based framework, we saw tons of investment in infrastructure. we saw companies like facebook and apple and google become worldwide names. we saw consumers going online in unprecedented numbers. that is the kind of successful framework that was jettison in 2015 when the obama administration imposed heavy handed rules based on 1930s regulations

on the internet. these were solutions that didn't -- weren't needed for a problem that didn't exist. steve: what you were suggesting is you want the free market to essentially figure out the basic structure of the internet and ultimately, if some cable company or an internet provider says, you know what? for an extra five bucks you will get faster internet. you are okay with that? >> well, essentially we simply want to put edges nears and entrepreneurs in charge of the internet. instead of bureaucrats and lawyers in washington. we shouldn't be micromanaging how this very dynamic free market success story should work. i think that's the model that's been tried and tested from president clinton all the way through the first six years of president obama. steve: you know your critics say that's not fair because it's essentially a public utility available to everybody, everybody should have the same access. >> well, the solution there, i think, is more competition and more innovation to get these companies to build out the networks further. the fcc has a lot of initiatives built towards doing that the problem is

list, tax reform. and the president tweeted this as members are back in the capitol. tax cuts, great subordination to our country. senate republicans will hopefully come through for all of us. the tax cut bill is getting better and better. the end result will be great for all. but at least six senators are on the fence for a variety of reasons ranging from increasing the debt to repealing the individual mandate to unfairly favoring corporations over small businesses. oklahoma senator james langford who was on this program in the last hour predicts they'll get there. >> i can't imagine we're not going to support this as a whole in the senate. i'm still working on specific parts of it. what i call a debt backstop to make sure that that's in place and other aspects of it. but this will get done. we have got to get this done for the nation. >> the president meeting with a lot of folks, including the big fours they're called. mcconnell, schumer, ryan, pelosi tomorrow in hopes of making progress to uniformly

>> it certainly does. he should have been thrown out a long, long time ago. he's a spoiler. i grew up with guys like bernie a dime a dozen. he goes off to vermont where he can really deal with the issues of america where there are only white people. he's just somebody who represents the early 20th century. no future in politics. steve: well, let's talk about the politics and the fbi and the special investigator and things like that. it was announced during the holiday, actually, that apparently michael flynn's lawyers have stopped talking to the white house lawyers. and now it looks like, you know, there are a number of democrats who are going, oh, you know what this means? this means mike flynn might actually flip on the president of the united states. that would be so bad for donald trump. in fact, we've got a montage of some of that stuff. watch this. >> michael flynn's lawyers cut ties with president trump's legal team. this is big news, folks. >> the types of things he could talk about is things he

talked about with the president. not only turkey but the president's interactions with james comey. >> donald trump should be somewhat nervous by this because michael flynn was campaigning with him. he was on the plane with him. they grew very, very close. steve: so is this a big deal? >> i don't think it's a big deal. his lawyers are very smart. what they're doing is holding up michael flynn and saying he could be bought or at least rented by either side. if the president wants him, he can pardon him. if the president won't pardon him, he'll flip and become a prosecution witness. hesitate credibility is witness. a, he has been accused of perjury. b, he's a bought witness. the only thing he can do is provide documentation or leads to the other side. but no good prosecutor would ever put him on the witness stand. ainsley: real quickly, tax reform. do you think democrats will get onboard? >> i wish people would vote on the merits instead of just voting party line. we're becoming a country where no politician today is an individual thinker. everybody is just what's good for the democrats. what's bad for the republicans.

what's bad for the democrats. what's good for the republicans? people have to start thinking about what's good for american voters. and we need tax reform, but we need tax reform that helps the poor as well as what helps bring jobs to america. brian: so reagan got the democrats. did he do it because he gave them what they wanted. or did he do it because he's the the president, and he wants legislation through? >> first of all, they did it because he was a great leader. and when people listened. leaders look you in the eye and say i'm going to do it because i believe in you. brian: why is it that you have some leadership on the democratic side like pelosi, like schumer and others who never want to bring up impeachment of the russia investigation. they leave it to others. what do they see that others don't see? >> well, they understand it's not in the future. there's not going to be impeachment. there's not going to be indictment. president trump is going to finish out his first term. i predict here he may

seriously consider not running for a second term. we don't know that. he may say, look, i accomplished everything i needed to accomplish in four years. but the idea that democrats may be able to undo a presidential election within four years is a pipe dream. and any smart politician understands that and don't waste your time trying to ding up the base. yeah, both sides. steve: allen, when -- you know, because you're a lifelong democrat. when your friends who are watching right now hear you say ronald reagan was a great leader. what does that do? doesn't -- some of their heads probably want to explode. what happened to that guy? >> first of all, my friends won't admit they're watching friends. steve: but they are. >> of course, they come and criticize me and say, well, why are you watching? well, i was flipping the channel, and it got stuck. people know i'm just as critical of the republicans as i am of the democrats. i call it as i see it. but people today demand loyalty. loyalty rather than integrity and so i get criticized an

>> well, it was after i dropped my daughter off at college, i had been in colorado, which it's very dry there, so i stopped in los angeles here and saw dr. sugarman and immediately he said that there was something wrong. so i flew home to hawaii and about three days later, they called me with the results and told me that i had squama cell carcinoma. steve: in your throat. brian: in your throat, and they quickly wanted to have surgery. how did the surgery go? >> the tumor was the size of a plumb, and so it was a 13-hour surgery, but it was blocking most of my airway and, you know, you do three things, obviously. you speak, you eat, and you breathe through your throat. and so it became an emergency at that point that it had just gotten so big that they needed to get it out. at the time, they thought it was a t2 tumor, that it was only going to take about five hours. but once they got inside, they

realized that it had grown down the back of my throat, basically, and wasn't just growing inside, it was growing in mass. so it was a critical situation at that point. ainsley: beth, you're a mom, you said you just dropped your daughter off to college. it's the holiday season, which is not easy for families that are going through a tough time. what is it like when you hear the doctor say you have cancer? >> i just think you just think of death. i mean, you don't really think of anything else because it's such a deadly disease, you know? and it -- it just comes to rob and cheat and steal. it really does. and so i just immediately thought what are these kids going to do, you know? i'm relatively young. i just turned 50 and these kids are -- i still have a son who's 16 years old coming through high school and my grandson 15 who lives with us, you know? so it was really a reality check, you know? that it was just, like, oh,

this can't be happening right now. i wanted to -- are they talking to me? this just can't be happening. i've given so many people so many second chances over the years, as you've seen through our show. i can't believe it was me asking for one. brian: duane, this is important. this is a personal thing and very public about hunting down people who did bad things and trying to escape with it. why was it important for you guys to go forward with a tv special about this? >> well, we've, you know, been on television thank god for 14 years, so i have a lot of people that i love, and i have a huge fan base. and when it first happened like she said, she was very -- not depressed. she got really mad. and she said what did i do to deserve this? i said, you know, honey, you didn't do nothing. cancer picks on, you know, anybody. you can be innocent of a good diet, blah, blah, blah. and i needed my fan base as support on her.

and once my fans found out and started, you know, giving her well wishes, beth, we love you, we're praying for you, i see a whole different beth. steve: yeah. >> i see the fighter -- excuse me. i see the fighter come alive. so i -- we -- i needed personally, back up because she wasn't listening to me. she's -- so. steve: yeah, and so beth, you were leaning on dog. and, dog, you were right there through the thick and thin, weren't you? >> well, i was -- you know, i made an oath, and i love her. and the oath was through sick and sadness health until death do us part. and as a husband, you sit there and say that and all of a sudden your face in that, you know, you swore to god. you swore on your soul to this woman that you'll stick by her. so it's not -- you know, it's an obligation that we must stick by our spouses when something like this happens.

you know, she -- i don't know how some of the times she through me out of the broom but, you know, that's our job, bro, you know? steve: right. brian: and, beth, what is the prognosis now? >> prognosis is good. they feel that, you know, they got it in time. they spent the time that they needed to get it out. they did a neck dissection as well to make sure that they had checked all of the lymph nodes and got down in through my neck area, and they feel pretty good about what's going on. i dodged the chemo bullet for right now, and we just have to monitor it and good diet, and i just have to take it easy and get rid of the stress and just try to, you know, heal a massive, you know, problem in my throat. but, you know, god is good all the time. ainsley: all the time. steve: we're going to be watching tonight at 9:00 eastern on the a&e channel. brian: thank you. steve: beth and dog, thank you

305 people during their prayer worship service on their friday, it breaks all the bounds, breaks all the norms. but even beyond that, it's a display of intolerance, religious intolerance of a kind that we -- to which we don't pay really enough attention. i think, brian, that we in the media for all the times we've been talking about terrorism, we haven't always done an adequate job of explaining how diverse islam is. brian: yep. >> and the sufis. this was a sufi mosque by in large. and they're the ones i have the most hope. they've been essentially the poets, the dreamers. some love music, others love dance. they're so radically different from the stringent viciousness that saudi arabia. brian: and that's why they're a threat.

so the european is a threat. >> yeah. their decency. their tolerance. i always tell people you want to understand sufi? cross a quaker with a episcopalian and put in a quaker soundtrack. the closest would be their joyous inner warmth for god. so all of these movements exist in all faiths. but the sufis, again, really, they were targeting the best of the people. the people who are the most decent. who have an inner relationship with god, rather than the barracks religion that isis and al-qaeda. brian: and right now, their answer is to bomb the heck of where they can find and hunt down al-qaeda and isis. is that the right response real quick, ralph? >> well, unfortunately, we do have to play whack-a-mole. you have to kill these extremists wherever you find them. by committing such acts as we see them do in syria and iraq and now in the sinai at this mosque, they have put

want to make sure you can have some fake ones. there's no rhyme or reason but these are the ticks. first is you start with the lights. then garland. ainsley: you need a ladder for this. >> and we're going to put them on right here. ainsley: or you could do ribbon. this is what we did in our household. you can put the ribbon inside and then pull it out and then tuck it in and then pull it out. >> she's fancy. steve: so first you add the lates. and then you put the garland, and then you put on the ornaments; right? >> exactly. so the ornaments, what you want to do is add ornaments inside the tree for added dimension. and these are the shatter proof ones. they're really pretty. look. >> i just got these at lowe's. and then if you have programming i'll ornaments, you put them in the top. brian: if they do fold, they're finished. >> exactly. and you want to make sure that you're putting the tree away from any working fireplaces.
