on thursday. it's beautiful. polish pope john paul ii began the tradition of putting the tree in st. peter's square. most-watched, most trusted and most grateful you have spent the evening with us. good night from washington. i amam shannon bream. >> tucker: good evening and welcome to "tucker carlson tonight." amid the flurry of sexual assault allegations, there is one important one you may have missed today. a woman named courtney morris told "the washington post" by john conyers once propositioned her for sex while driving her home in 2001. when she refused, she says he brought up the disappearance of former intern chandra leavy who was killed in washington that year. essentially she claims invoking the threat of murder. at that point, morse said she got out of the car and ran awayh we should point out she was only 20 at the time. conyers is the longest serving member of congress, he announced his resignation this week.
9:01 pm
we got some news about members of the conyers family. melanie sloan joins us tonight. you are one of the reasons this story has come to light. tell us how it happened.e >> after i told my story to "the washington post" and appeared in the news, courtney morse reached out to me, wanted to talk about what happened to her. she was considering whether or not to come forward and i encouraged her to publicly telll her story. >> tucker: one of the reasons i want to talk about this, there are a lot of allegations were flying around and some of them seem true, some you don't really know. this seems to be in a different category because she is suggesting he was implying something very dark by invoking the name of a murdered intern during their exchange. are we mistreating this? she thought he was implying something horrible. >> she thought it was possible. she was clearly very nervous by it and scared by the entire experience.
9:02 pm
>> tucker: here you have a member of congress, one of the most famous, now literally the longest serving, capable, she says, of implying murder, it's hard to believe that nobody knew he was a lunatic, if that is true. that's lunatic behavior and nobody suspected it? i don't understand how that could be. >> i wasn't there, so i don't know. i've talked to courtney and i believe her when she tells me what happened and that she was quite terrified by it. she told other people at time about the incident, so the statement speaks for itself. conyers is a mercurial persont, and i think often has said things that he doesn'tal necessarily mean. i doubt he was really s threatening to kill her, that seems extremely unlikely, but clearly she was frightened and for good reason. >> tucker: yeah, i guess that's kind of the point.
9:03 pm
this is different from --th many allegations we've heard. to say to a 20-year-old intern to invoke a dead intern to an intern that you're hitting on suggests you're a psychopath. >> i don't think he's a psychopath. i can't explain his statements. again, i wasn't there and thisnk was a long time after i worked with him. i will say that he is unusual in how he talks a lot of times and sometimes, there seem to be inconsistencies in things he'll say. it's hard to envision exactly what happened.he >> tucker: you consider him capable of this? >> i don't consider him remotely capable of killing anybody, no. >> tucker: of saying this. >> no, i don't know. i never heard him say anything remotely like this, but i'm not challenging courtney's experience or what she heard. i don't know.
9:04 pm
>> tucker: okay, it just seems like a big deal if he said something like this. melanie, thank you. staffers from conyers' office say for years, there have been moments where it seem like he had no idea where he was and who was around him, sounds like a lot of fun.re meanwhile, congressman conyers said his preferred replacement would be his son. he's got a lot of experience so far as a rap artist. he was arrested earlier this year for stabbing his girlfriend the charges were later dropped. in addition, he is a writer for "the huffington post." he's also a partner at some kind of hedge fund in detroit and a multidisciplined consultant in case you need more evidence. the financial economy is ridiculous. mark steyn joins us. basically the headline is a hedge fund manager is running for congressman and detroit.ca >> the headline is there is a hedge fund in detroit.
9:05 pm
that's a staggering concept. i'd rather have a real-life house of law. -- house of lords. i gathered there is a great nephew in the conyers family who wants to run against the sun. the democratic primary is goingy to be john conyers the third, john conyers iv, the fifth duke of conyers, and caitlin conyers who used to be john conyers v before he transitioned. that's going to be a choice in the democratic primary. >> tucker: how many members of congress have stabbed someone? >> i think to elect someone -- he claims, as tom jones did in
9:06 pm
the song "delilah," he says he didn't take the knife, she had the knife an end attempting to wrestle the knife from her, he wound up stabbing her. this doesn't seem to be the kind of candidate you're looking for if you are making a clean sweep. as melanie just testified, she didn't think john conyers senior was capable of killing someone where this guy, his son, actually has been arrested for stabbing someone. that doesn't seem like an improvement frankly. by the way, this is the deed of the house. this isn't just some obscure creature. i have to say, melanie has said he called her in the office and his underpants and his communications director said we all saw him in his underpants d
9:07 pm
because he changed in his office. this guy has an office job, you don't have to go on stage into hamlet. he doesn't climb into a tuxedo why is he taking his pants on and off in his office all day? these are very strange people. >> tucker: [laughs] so many mysteries.wi we'll be certain to return to this topic with you because you're an expert. thank you very much. >> thanks a lot, tucker. >> tucker: we have some breaking news. congressman trent franks of arizona is the third member to announce his resignation amid allegations of misconduct. in a statement, he says he never attempted to have contact withth any staffer, but he admitted to having "an uncomfortable conversation about surrogacy with two women who worked for him." the congressman was pushed to resign by the speaker of theur house, paul ryan. rebecca heinrichs was an advisor.si from what you know, what exactly
9:08 pm
are the charges, what are the allegations causing him to resign? >> the allegations are that congressman franks' approach to staffers individually about the subject of surrogacy in his office. he talked about surrogacy. he and his wife and have fertility problems. he had uncountablele conversations.er according to him, he asked if they would ever consider being a surrogate. according to him, he never put it to them that they would be surrogates for him. an awkward conversation, it could make someone feel uncomfortable, but to me, that doesn't rise to the level of sexual harassment or abuse. that's what the claim is and that's what he says. i worked for the congressman, i remained in touch with him. we worked on policy issues. i have never been made to feel uncomfortable with the congressman, i have never seen any slightest bit of sexual harassment or intimidation.
9:09 pm
he has treated every single member that i've seen of his staff with dignity and respect.m this is incredibly startling to me and frankly, i find it a tragedy. i find it a tragedy that he feels like he needs to resign over what we know about the allegations. >> tucker: he's being pushed to resign by paul ryan. have you spoken to him? >> i have not. >> tucker: assuming, this is all there is to know, but this is what we do know, on the basis of this, do you think these are appropriate grounds for resignation? >> absolutely not. when you're a member of congress, you'll be working with staff on very difficult issues of policy. congressman franks, he's one of the most well-known pro-life members, so he cares about the dignity of life. he was going through something incredibly hard. he was thinking ethically about surrogacy. he was trying to go about it in a way of honoring the life of what would be his unborn child. he had an uncomfortable orconversation.
9:10 pm
is it weird? yes, i think it's weird. might it make some money -- somebody uncomfortable? sure. should she have left? sure, i hope she did. are those grounds for accusing him of something so severe especially in this whirlwind of legitimate sexual abuse, it's lumping him with congressman conyers with as a whole slew of women, it's very troubling as someone who continues to work with the congressman. >> tucker: thank you, we appreciate it. congressman john conyers is not the only casualty of the recent stream of sexual harassment allegations. in an awesomely washingtonian resignation, al franken called h himself a champion of women and did not apologize once to anyone who accusedn him. b is the outrage based on a
9:11 pm
genuine concern for the victims or something very cynical going on? he was not impressed and he joins us to assess everything that happened. thanks for coming on.nd i'm not exactly sure what i think of everything around senator franken. i didn't like him as a senator, but i do know that a lot of the people denouncing him particularly senator gillibrand of new york are hypocrites. you made this point that she's a hypocrite.an what was the response when you said that? >> let me preface this in that this behavior of senators franken, moore, conyers, this has to be taken very seriously. when true, it's inappropriate. with senator gillibrand, the point that i was making and i think continue to make, she's not putting in context herd rationale for who she calls the
9:12 pm
resignation and when.er two weeks ago, she called for bill clinton's resignation or saying he should have resigned two decades ago, didn't really explain why. she didn't say she regretted not speaking earlier or regret taking the clintons' support or money. then goes a few weeks without saying anything about senator franken until yesterday. that's not to say her decision is wrong, she was joined by 29 other senators, but most people have been discussing this within a framework of if someone does this, it's unacceptable and they should resign. it's unclear in the way she's been describing her actions what that rationale is. >> tucker: i agree. if one of your colleagues exhibits poor judgment or does something grotesque or indefensible, attack him, i get s it. when you call yourself a defender of all woman under all circumstances, you better defend all women under all circumstances. earlier this year, an activist
9:13 pm
against female genital mutilation went to the senate and testified before the committee. she wrote a piece in "the new york times" describing how the female democrats on the committee blew her t off, ignorg her, didn't ask a single question, were in effect hostile to her. i don't understand -- they are specifically heidi heitkamp -- how do you call yourself a defender of all women when it can't stand up against female genital mutilation?ou >> i'm not familiar with that event but i will say you can't just say all the women of the senate, republican or democrat, are not attuned to allegations and concerns of women. that would be absurd. how they reacted in that case, i don't know. i don't know why but i think what we are seeing now is everyone feeling around where exactly and how exactly to deal with these accusations.
9:14 pm
you have senator franken, you showed a clip of what he was saying, and he's getting a lot of grief because he said i am resigning but. as much criticism as he's getting, it is showing the concern, certainly among democrats, about the hypocrisy. he said it himself. i am resigning. a month from now, roy moore will be in office. i am resigning but donald trump is still president. there is no reckoning across the board. there is no standard. >> tucker: here's a standard. we make a mistake and we assume that all abuse and harassment is sexual in nature. you can mistreat the women in your office without hitting on them or taking your clothes off in front off them. i'm wondering if you think all these senators attacking franken, how many of them have thrown a stapler at a woman in their office? or screamed at their female subordinates? >> or man? >> that kind of behavior is common. it's not sexual harassment, but it's every bit as bad.
9:15 pm
>> congress in a lot of ways is not a typical work environment. what we have been seeing in the media, finance, other places, when someone has an accusation, they are looked into and quickly dismissed. the house, the senate. it's a problem because if you are al franken, you are like, what's going onnk here? the problem is the white house to answer, donald trump was elected, therefore it's over. that's not true. >> tucker: it ought to be unionized. there should be a staffers unio union. >> i worked on the hill, and if anyone threw a stapler me. >> tucker: thank you for being here. yet another fox news alert on a night full. f the justice department has launched a investigation into planned parenthood. it's practices in the sale of fetal tissue. a letter obtained byd fox,

>> tucker: this is a fox news alert. documents obtained exclusive by this show a few hours ago show that yet another key player and the mueller independent investigation has deep ties to the democratic party establishment. his name is aaron sibley.me he is described as mueller's right-hand man. back in 2015, he was a lawyer and represented hillary clinton's i.t. staffer justin cooper. cooper is the one who personally put in the secretary of state's private illegal server in her home. congressional investigators sought to meet with cooper but they were stonewalled again and again by him. documents that we obtained today show the frustration of homeland security and government affairs committee in trying to get to mr. cooper. he telephoned homeland. security staff to inform them that cooper had chosen to cancel the
9:21 pm
interview.he in the letter to cooper, congressional investigators complained, "we are troubled by your attorney. his complete refusal to engage the committee in a discussion about how to further assuage her concerns." take that in for a minute. a lawyer who played a defense role in the federal investigation into hillary clinton is now playing an offensive role in a federal investigation against president trump. this is not the first time the mueller probe has been dogged by questions of partisanship. also an fbi employee peter strzok was demoted following the discovery of anti-trump text messages and pro clinton text much as messages he sent to his girlfriend, also an employee. to make matters even messier for the justice department, by the way, a senior official recently
9:22 pm
demoted an investigation into his contracts with the opposition research firm that produce the trump dossier. initially, justice department officials will not provide the reason for the demotion, but details were later turned over by devin nunes, who found the official had met with christopher steele before a n british spy. author of the dossier back through the last campaign. boy, it's a lot to digest. all of us comes as fbi director christopher wray was grilled by congress this afternoon. take a look at the part of that. >> i ask you again, surely you've examined the definition and the distinction between extreme carelessness and gross negligence. within the statute. are you really going to tell us today that you don't have an opinion on that distinction? gross a negligence is the langue in the statute, i believe, but i believe that anyone who grabbed a thesaurus would say that gross
9:23 pm
negligence and extreme carelessness are pretty darn close to each other. >> tucker: so if they are close to week each other, why change it? that is the question. congressman steve king joins us. thanks for coming on. before i ask you about yourbo hearing today, this news that aaron zebley who was working with former director mueller. he had this investigation. once was the personal lawyer of hillary clinton's i.t. guy. he blocked him from coming to congress. why would mueller hire a democrat for for a partisan joe this? >> this whole thing screams conflict of interest along the way. the whole thing was asked of director wray.y. he has a tight rope he needs to walk. the question was essentially, did you have a criteria in order to be part of the team or did dude director mueller have that?
9:24 pm
he only had clinton partisans to tap into? every single one of them is a clinton partisan. >> tucker: whato so grotesque and ironic about this is the statute is to reassure the public that the investigation is above politics. that that is why it was taken of the hands of the doj leadership. yet, almost all of them seem to have ties. >> if not everyone. i thought trey gowdy made a really good point today when he said, if you are a jury of someone's peers, every day in america, people are called together, 12 peers sitting thern and they are forbidden from deliberating on the evidence in front of them until the last evidence is in and then they get their jury instructions and i go back to the room and deliberate. in this case, we've got decisions coming out, we've got comey deciding before he issued the statement july 5th, a year ago, reaching the conclusion that he would come to the investigation of hillary clinton. another thing i brought up to christopher wray today, the
9:25 pm
testimony that we have from comey, loretta lynch, each of them appointed three members, three of fbi, three of doj, to investigate hillary clinton, which we know is an investigation. but there are -- there is no audio tape of that investigation, there is no video ofo that. there is no transcript. there t are only the notes of te investigators and that's essentially proprietary. so the advice that comey gave was not based upon any text of anything or any evidence of anything, it was just a briefing of the three agents. >> tucker: plus bottom line it it. would any normal american, you are me, be treated by this way by the fbi? >> i don't know. not on the favoritism side. there wouldn't have been. i have to ask this question, if michaelel flynn can be guilty of lying to the fbi, how would the fbi know if hillary clinton lied to them if they don't have any kind of tape or video? >> tucker: they didn't want to know. congressman, thank you for

there are two new fires that have started down near san diego.. i can give you a live look at what it looks like in ventura county as our helicopter is up from our local affiliate in southern california showing some of the flames.e they are out in more of the wildland area now. its stopped this fire on way toward the town calledwa carpinteria which has about 13,000 people. they made good headway today and pretty much stopping the fire in that direction. the winds that were forecasted did not come as strong and long as expected last night intd today, but it's still a red flag warning until the middle of saturday, so there's still a a a chance that the santa ana winds that started this whole thing monday night, there's a chance he could come back. right now, the idea is to knock these fires down as quickly as they can and hopefully get some sort of angle on those fires.. >> tucker: adam housley, from southern california, thank you. congressional stalemate over illegal immigrant dreamers could lead to a government shutdown just days before christmas.

is it worth it, is the question, with all of the things going. attorney andst columnist joins . thanks for coming on. they are not all bad and they are not all physicians. they are people, i get it. the middle class is shrinking, both in size and in its life expectancy, half the country, according to a recent study, can't come up with 400 bucks. why would democrats in congress put illegal aliens of the very top, giving amnesty to a group of people at the very top of their list of priorities? i don't understand. >> i'm not a democratic strategist but i think my understanding is that democrats are looking at the mood of the country. for example, last month, we saw a poll from fox news that said 86% of americans favor letting
9:32 pm
these dreamers say here compared to only 12% who favor deporting them. and then today, we had a poll from "cbs news" saying it was 84% of americans want to let them stay versus -- including 74% of republicans who want to let them stay. my sense is that democrats say,m well, this is what people want. i personally -- >> tucker: hold on. i am sorry. i think the numbers you just read are probably true -- >> it's a fox news poll. >> tucker: they don't reflect the priority that people give to it. if you ask people what are the top priorities in this country, what should be fixed first, giving amnesty to a bunch of people who are here illegally is not even close to the top. why would you shutdown the government unless people who came here illegally get citizenship? jump in front of everyone else around the world and give it to these people. why would that be the top priority? >> inio fact, i don't think most americans think it is a top priority. i guess i would say two things.
9:33 pm
number one, the franken is not amnesty because it's a temporary grant.ty it's not legal status, it's temporary, lawful residence. >> tucker: it's amnesty. it is a democrats top priority because they are shutting down the government, they say. >> we have a disagreement. >> tucker: they are shutting down the government over it. >> is it worth it shutting down the government? i think, no. but look at it this way, if i were conservative, i would be very concerned if this did proceed for a government impasse for two reasons. number one, republicans control the white house, house of representatives, and the senatee they are likely to be blamed even if it is not -- >> whatever. i don't understand the politics. i just want to know what's good for the country. we are all agree that the economy is becoming less labor-intensive, and we are moving to the next stage, a digital economy. so the majority of dreamers are now adults. and yet thehe majority of them,
9:34 pm
according to government statistics, don't have high school degrees, even though they are adults. so why should i's an american, thinking about our economy, the new economy, why should i be excited about giving permanent residency oror citizenship of people who don't have high school degrees? why would i want that? >> i think it is because those statistics are correct. 44% of the dreamers have high school diplomas. but then we have another 18% who are in college, we have 15% to have a college degree, and then we have some others -- we have dreamers at all different levels. >> tucker: those numbers are way below native numbers, native-born americans. way less educated than your average american. why is it good for us? >> is good for us, number one, like i said, because it's what the american people want. most importantly, it's the law. president obama created, through his executivees action, the deferred action program, which i understand it, very controversial to a lot of people. however, the congress gave
9:35 pm
deferred action grantees, they gave them the work permits. our congress decided it's okay for people with deferred action to work. i don't understand why some people would say why are they able to get jobs or compete -- >> tucker: some people might say that. we are out of time. >> the answer to that wise with congress.r congress could change the definition of deferred action. >> tucker: t thank you, though, for y joining us. up next, a minnesota mayor went off when someone suggested that not everybody has white privilege. >> i am passionate about this. all sides of the story, and for you to disregard the fact that white privilege exists -- >> tucker: the woman on the other side of that tirade, congressman gina bauman, is here. we'll ask her, how privileged are you?
