terror related but two men in custody in australia when their suv plowed through a busy city center packed with christmas shoppers. 14 people injured. several taken to hospitals. one a child with a head injury whiles motive wasn't immediately clear police say it was deliberate. >> at this time we do believe it is a deliberate act. however, we don't know the motivation and it's still early stages of the investigation. >> police say the driver is 32-year-old man of afghan dissent with a history of drug abuse and mental health issues. no links to terrorism or extremism as of yet. but the investigation kins. witnesses said the vehicle was traveling at about 60 miles per hour, run a red light crashing into pedestrians before good samaritans rushed to the car and pulled the two men out. prime minister malcolm burn bull calling it shocking and tweeting thoughts and prayers for victims and first responders. finally guys, the icket

[applause] >> merry christmas, america. ainsley: do you remember when president bush sent out all those checks? i think i was in college. i needed that money so badly. that's what's happening with companies now. they heard that announcement yesterday. they saw out tax reform bill was passed. they are already shelling out money to some of their employees. steve: they can afford it. ainsley: economists say this will bring $250 back into the u.s. companies are already benefiting and giving it back to workers. brian: at&t jumped out and the president handled this like breaking news shepard smith move over. i just got ahold of this. at&t is going to start reacting now and bringing back millions to our shores.

they are going to add 200,000 employees and they are going to give 200,000 employees a thousand dollars each. steve: that's right. increase capital spending by a billion dollars. they feel now that they are cutting their taxes they can afford it wells fargo is going to hike their hourly rate to $15 an hour. fifth third bank will raise the minimum payment to $15 per hour. and everybody gets one-time bonus of 1,000 bucks. and comcast is going to wind up giving out thousand dollar bonuses to more than 100,000 employees. ainsley: nonexecutive employees. the big plane maker boeing, 300-million-dollar employee and charitable investment. they are able to invest because the top corporate rate yesterday went from 35 to 21. 14%. what's going to happen to that? those corporations just gave it back to the people that work for them. ainsley: if you listen to the democrats. we will play some sound. listen carefully to what

they say. they talk about how this is helping the rich. this is helping the executives and companies. that list that you and brian just read, nonexecutive employees, hourly 3,000 hourly employees at fifth third bank. hourly employees at wells fargo. this is helping the little guy. the guys who made $13, 13.50 an hour. now they it will be making $15 an hour. steve: it helps. ainsley: listen to what the democrats are saying now. >> now we know they are popping champagne down pennsylvania avenue. there are only two places where america is popping champagne, the white house and the corporate board rooms, including trump tower. otherwise, americans have a lot to regret. >> after all the president's promises, after all republicans brazenly transparent misrepresentations to the personal people, the true face of what republicans stand for has been revealed.

>> well, it is a victory for billionaires like donald trump. it's a victory for wealthy campaign contributors like the koch brothers. this is a disaster for the american people. brian: which is strange because if you look at what is happening in a lot of the major high tax states like new york and california and new jersey, they actually -- those who earn the most are actually getting almost to some degree a tax increase and the top bracket goes from 39 to 37. the other brackets go conceivably much lower. if you look at the other side. and you understanding that most of the networks are doing that you understand too why when asked about this plan will you save money, will you pay less taxes, most americans are down on that prospect. it's not a mystery. it's because everybody is running down the plan even before the ink was dry. steve: the mainstream media was saying this is going to be bad for the middle class. in new jersey yesterday chris christie who only has about a month left on the

clock before he retires from the job as governor. he suggested that in high tax states, for instance, new jersey, why don't we make all those state and local taxes, property taxes fully deductible at the state level? that's something they could do. it would cost them $150 million, why don't they do it? because they have got -- they are spending it on something else. they don't want to do that. they could, they have driven up the tax rates in these states so high and this is a way out. they're not going to do anything about it. ainsley: i don't understand why the democrats -- if you look at the majority of the country and look at the tax brackets, the majority of the country is not going to pay as much in taxes. definitely going to save money. you have more money to feed your kids, send them to college. i don't understand how they can look at these numbers and say it's not going to happen. they will be eating crow if more companies continue to do this. it's this is day one. it hasn't been 24 hours sips this was signed by or passed by both house and senate, and already companies are giving back to their employees. if this continues to happen

and because of the corporate tax rate going down, if more companies stay in the u.s. and move to the u.s., our economy is going to boom. brian: if the companies don't act responsibly and forecast that they just got the break of a lifetime, everyone is watching what they are going to do. if they make the president look bad and put it into dividends or give their ceos bonuses they won't see it again. no republican could ask for it again. no democrat would not run on it if these corporations don't act responsibly. steve: they have a lot more money, start giving it to the people. make some bigger dividends. if you are a stock market investor you want a bigger dividend. that's how it works. ainsley: if you hear us talk about these companies go and support because they are giving back to their employees. we will continue to talk about the companies giving back to the little people. brian: repatriate funds. $2 trillion overseas. jillian: i have at&t i'm supporting. steve: i have comcast. jillian: we have breaking

new op-ed ou: here to discuss this is fox news contributor and former advisory counsel member steve cortes. the nay sayers would say we are about keeping families together when they come here. what do you say? >> brian, i would say i'm okay with the nuclear family, meaning a spice or minor children. but the idea that your blood line should be the primary driver who gets into this country i think is just ludicrous. 70% of immigrants of the united states in recent years are because of chain migration. because they are sponsored by a relative who already lives here it can be a distant relative. here is the reality. it doesn't make economic sense. and it doesn't make national security sense. on the economic side, the majority -- listen, i love immigration, but we have to do it better. the majority of immigrant head of households in the united states right now, receive some form of welfare. that is totally different to the immigration realities

that were faced by people like my father and many of our parents and great grandparents who came here. they expected nothing but an opportunity in the united states. that's not the reality right now. we have to change that. brian: the president wants to make it more of a draft and less of a lottery. here's some stats i think would help enlighten everybody why you have this point of view. the majority of green cards issued in the united states, 65% family based immigration. so, because one person is here, the rest get to come without screening just because they are related. 15% are refugees and 7% are family of employment based immigrants, 6% based on immigrants and 5% based on a visa lottery system. overall, last year, in terms of immigrants, in 2016, 804,000 came here through chain. in 2015, that was 678. this is trending in the wrong direction. >> right. brian: i sense that democrats to a degree agree and there might be something being done behind the scenes massive immigration reform.

is that what you are hearing? >> i think. so that's in the offing. we have a deal in january where the president exchanges permanent protection for daca recipients in exchange for an end or at least restrictions on chain migration. and an end to the visa lottery system. brian, that is just lunancy. the idea that we would literally at random allow people to come to the united states makes no sense and on the national security side by the way, the awful incident on halloween, the truck attack on a new york sidewalk where 8 innocent people were mowed down, he was here because he won, i mean, i don't even like to use that term, but he won the visa lottery. that's just outlandish and unsafe system to allow anyone into the united states. it has to be merit based. what kind of skills and drive do you bring to this country. do you love our values and constitution and embrace the system that is america and self-sufficient. steve: if you are going to bring a pipe bomb with you on the lottery system, you are going it hurt everybody else. maybe that's what happened at the port authority.

people all the president has accomplished this year. the mainstream media isn't covering it they have to tell their story. if you don't tell your story, someone is going to tell it for you. this is a way reminding us look what he has done for the veterans. look at tax reform and what is happening in middle america. it's a smart way for them to do it rather than having the president tout it himself or people closest to him. this is a message back from the american people. ainsley: let's look at some of the messages, the best and worst this year. best from the president. >> number one was the inaugural address. a lot of people remember some of the more controversial remarks. when we tested that i don't know if you remember that back in january, the american people really resonated with it. even democrats did. specifically his message, let's take a look here. >> today we are not merely transferring power from one administration to another or from one party to another, but we are transferring power from washington, d.c. and giving it back to you,

the people. [cheers and applause] >> so when he talked about this, this idea of returning government to the people, this is an idea that people keep coming back through. through all controversies, through everything else, people keep saying you know what? he fighting for me to. reason to run for president unless he wanted to do this for the american people. a lot of people resonate with that message and one that was really strong and smart for his inaugural theme. ainsley: do you have another one? >> this next one somebody somewhat controversial, i think. but the president calling kim jong un rocket man. the way that he uses some of these digs, these nicknames some people say they don't like it. they stick and they really have lasting impact. take a look at this one. >> the united states has great strength and patience. but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we have no choice but to totally destroy north korea.

rocket man is on a suicide mission for himself and for his regime. ainsley: a lot of people did love that speech. >> a lot of people loved that speech. the idea of rocket man continuing to be talked about, whether it's rocket man, fake news, crooked hillary. think of all the names. he controls the narrative when he does things like that and really gets headlines on it. it's a smart move on his part. ainsley: what were some of the worst this year? >> some of the worst i think were unintentional. if you remember, senator jeff flake was caught on a hot mike talking, take a look at it. >> become the party of roy moore and donald trump, we are toast. >> i don't want blow smoke at you but you are the guy just for fun. just think how much fun it would be to be the foil and point out what an idiot this guy is. >> ainsley: forgot they were wearing the mike. >> there clearly was a lot

of antagonism in that relationship. not all that surprising kind of conversation we are having. certainly didn't do anything to elevate the status of a senator. ainsley: anything else? >> yeah. we do have one more. this was one that i was really upset about personally and i think a lot of people were, too. when after the -- after all the shootings people said thoughts and prayers and they started of going after that. let's take a look at this one. >> i'm so sick of thoughts and prayers. thoughts are the opposite of prayers. [laughter] a thought is what should i do? a prayer is wishing on a star. thoughts and prayers republican way of saying tough [bleep]. >> this is brutal. it wasn't just bill maher. a number of people came out and said thoughts and prayers are not enough. i understanding people want gun control they didn't want these things to happen. thoughts and prayers are really important. prayers are not just wishing on a star. prayers are an act of faith saying i do want faith and

but we also see. brian: do you think it mischaracterized. >> i do. and well, of course, but this is what happens russia, focused on the men and women of this country. always squeezed them out. never anything there for them. they have no access. there is no accountability from there office holders. they get every every morning already exhausted. go to work. work hard, pay their taxes, pay their dues, live an honest live and yet are white knuckled at the end of each month trying to pay that student loan voucher that student bill. that mortgage. this one for them. doubling the child care tax credit. giving the first adult tax depend dent tax credit of this nature, doubling the standard deduction, there are going to be more americans now who pay more of their tax at a zero percent rate, which is to say nothing on that income.

organizations. steve: bank is raising their minimum wage to $15 an hour. ainsley: everybody. steve: comcast has 100,000 employees, they're going to be giving $1,000 bonuses. ainsley: to the nonexecutives. steve: and going to invest $50 billion in infrastructure, which every company needs to do and now that they have the big tax cut, they can. and boeing is going to put $300 million into an employee charity i believe investment fund. so clearly, when you lower the top rate for corporations from 35 to 21, they got 14% to suddenly give back to the people. brian: well, what they didn't give is big marginal individual rate reductions. they wanted to. they did it through reconciliation only 51 votes. they couldn't do it as massive as they can and a lot of people pointing out in ten years, these rates expire. so people are saying why do corporations have permanent? why do individuals have temporary? well, the hope is as many pick tax cuts that these will stick around too. the democrats did not waste

brian: lawmakers passing much-needed tax reform this week but one senator's decision is under fire. >> senator corker announced his decision, and he is facing backlash over a last-minute change to the legislation being dubbed the corker kick back. >> the 20% deduction for pass through income also now being called the corker kick back would cost the government alone just by that change. >> the senator said he had nothing to do with a provision. so has senator corker been a

victim of the fake news trend just like president trump that many said was just a slogan? one of the most respected on both sides of the aisle. senator, what is the corker kick back? >> look, this is a travesty that something like this will be put to poverty. look, the fact is this was a provision that came from the house of representatives. brian, i've had zero impact on a word of the tax file. the focus on deficits. the reporter that wrote about this knew i was unaware of the vision. i sat down on thursday and walked through the house and senate bill as it was being published, if you will. and this was not a provision that was even brought up. the reporter calls. he knows i'm unaware of it. and then all of a sudden turns it around as if this had some

impact on a decision that i had already made. so the president called yesterday. we had a warm conversation about numbers of issues. i told him that i had a healthy respect for the media. i deal with them all the time and, you know, to attack the media has not been something i've done. but i had a newfound empathy for him in watching how a totally debunked story by everybody involved. orrin hatch, kevin brady, the guys that actually wrote this bill knew i had nothing to do with it. but then you have this lottery who says this. all of a sudden people i respect in the news media. new york times, wall street journal, washington post. people start printing this as if it's true. a social media phenomenon, and i've never used in my life the words fake news. until today, i actually understand what it is the president has been dealing

with. brian: and roughly. i know you don't like to go verbatim because it's the confidence between you two but roughly what was his reaction when you told him that? did he laugh? did he empathize? >> he had just mentioned that he had been dealing with this for over a year. and, look, i'm sorry. i've witnessed it firsthand. it is not good. i know other people have witnessed the same. look, as i mentioned to him, i have a new-found empathy for what he and others have been dealing with in this regard. brian: and both of you are fighters. you didn't get successful in your business without mixing it up. even though you have different approaches. so your instinct is to fight back. and i watched you on cnn with wolf blitzer, and he asked the same question nine times about something that fundamentally didn't happen. >> yeah. no, i know. and, again, brian, i think it's difficult for people to

understand that when you make a decision on these big, big votes, you've got to decide. is the country better off with this or not? and you've got to make a decision based on all the facts you have. look, i've been very concerned about deficits in our country. i think people know that. there's no doubt that over a 43-trillion-dollar revenue-based over the next ten years, there's the possibility of a 500 million-dollar gap. but at the end of the day to cause our companies to be competitive around the world, to keep companies from locating in other places, to continue to build on this that we have here in our nation, i felt like this was the right thing to do. but, yes, unbelievable the way this has been handled. brian: well, senator, real quick. the chairman of foreign relations. you want to be tough on russia and this administration has been labeled as being weak on russia. something happened yesterday significant. you decided to -- and the president confirmed -- lethal weapons to the ukraine to take on those separatists backed by

break. joining us right now from the white house, ivanka trump, special adviser to the president, who also happens to be her father. ivanka, good morning to you. ainsley: good morning to you. congratulations. >> thank you. what a day to be here to celebrate. steve: no kidding. and your name actually has been linked to this for a while because you were pushing an increase in the child tax credit. in the ultimate final bill, it essentially is doubled. and i know you also had mike lee with you, the senator from utah and marco rubio as well. explain to the folks at home what it's going to do for them. >> well, the president was very clear that he wanted this bill to accomplish two goals, of american businesses to be competitive and therefore lead to wage increase for working americans. but to also target relief at middle income families and tax credit is an incredible way to do that. we all know that the cost of raising children has gone up

exponential in this country as until recently wages have stag nade. so raising children is a very important investment that we as a country can make and in the future, this is the next generation of american workers, american entrepreneurs and innovators. so the child tax credit was doubled. the refundability was expanded. very importantly the standard deduction, the standard for the average family, the standard deduction was actually doubled, which is enormously beneficial. the child and the tax carecredit was maintained as part of the bill. the accommodation. steve: a lot of good stuff. >> well, if you look at the things that were cut, it wasn't lobbyists or special interest. the things that were expanded were things like the child tax credit that have such meaningful impact for everyday americans. one of the things that was really so amazing to me

traveling across the country was the sense of financial most american families experience. even middle income american families. the average american family can't come up with $400 in the event of an emergency and my father is committed to changing that. this administration is committed to changing that. and what we're doing to encourage growth during deregulation is one of the mechanisms. but tax reform is an enormous vehicle to create the type of growth that will lend itself to prosperity for all americans and this is a historic milestone, historic accomplishment. we're all incredibly excited. we've been working so closely with congress and as a administration been unified in achieving the president's goals. ainsley: yeah, ivanka, some of these companies are already benefiting. it has not even been 24 hours and workers at some of the companies that we all use on a daily basis are benefiting. for instance, at&t, 200,000 of their employees are getting

$1,000 each before christmas. and then at wells fargo, the hourly wages are now going up to $15 an hour. fifth third bank, their wages are going up to $15 an hour. comcast, the nonexecutives. the people who aren't the bosses and make the big bucks, 100,000 of them are getting 1,000 bonuses. so you're saying some of these families, they can't cover an emergency. they're living paycheck to paycheck. $1,000. that's really big right before christmas. what a gift for them. >> it is such important, meaningful release. and really, ainsley, this is just the beginning. it's just starting. so we know that this is only going to increase and grow as companies bring back money that have been parked overseas. as companies reinvest in businesses. one of the incredible elements of this plan is the fact that for five years, 100% of capital expensing by businesses. so it enables them to modernize to invest back in their businesses. so i'm deeply passionate about

entrepreneurship and encouraging american innovation, and i believe the tax reform is so critical for us to be competitive and create that next generation of american entrepreneur and small business owners and give them the confidence to launch their business and give them the confidence to invest in their business and invest in their workforce. brian: but if these major corporations don't take advantage of this fuent and do the right thing instead of putting it into the executive's pockets, they're never going to get it again. i want to move forward. moments ago i spoke to senator corker behind the scenes. he was one of the "no" votes recently that became a "yes" vote. senator flake and collins and others were a "no" and came aboard. you played a role on that. you never want to play attention to yourself. i respect that. but he brought attention to you. listen. oh, we don't have it? he essentially said that ivanka played a major role behind the scenes in getting us to a "yes" vote in order to explain further what he needed

and what the rest of the senate needed. can you bring us behind the scenes? >> yeah. and it was a great privilege to be able to do so. we worked incredibly well as a team. i think we've over the course of the year learned how to work as a unified voice. so i saw a lot of time on behalf of the administration and with members of the administration, gary cohn, secretary mnuchin, our whole team on the hill and talking with different senators. and he had real integrity around this processes. so i will say that for sure. he had his concerns. he felt that his concerns were adequately addressed, and he really believed that tax relief coupled with deregulatory actions will create the growth that will start to erode and ultimately eliminate national debt that
