back in march told me that this was different than president obama's use of golf, which was obama played far less than president trump but sean said trump was using the game much differently. can you tell me the biggest single thing the president has accomplished for the american people during his time on the golf course? >> secretary sanders: i think it would certainly be developing deeper and better relationships with members of congress in which those relationships have helped push forward the president's agenda specifically when it comes to helping get the tax reform and tax cuts passed. a lot of that and the success of that came from the strong relationship the president has and he has played golf with a number of senators and use that time certainly to accomplish that. >> so much as been accomplished in this time, we don't always get confirmation of what he's doing there despite requests. there was an incident with the box truck. why is it seem as though the white house is a little -- has
12:01 pm
some kind of issue >> the president is extremely proud of the accomplishments we had in 2017. i don't think anyone can argue. it's probably one of the most successful first years in office. reworked the court system, supreme court justice nominated. a booming economy. massive gains on the war on isis. we've had an extremely successful 2017. we'll take one last question. >> is there a reason for no read-out or confirmation when -- >> we've provided information when it's pertinent to the day and we'll continue to do that. >> earlier the president tweeted about tax reform saying companies are giving bonuses to worker because of the tax cut bill.
12:02 pm
really great. will the employees of the president's own companies getting bonuses as a result of the tax cuts? >> that's a question to ask the trump organization. the president is not involved in that. i'd refer you to them. >> don't think companies -- >> i'm sorry. >> does the company feel the companies that can afford bonuses should pay them? >> i certainly hope that companies will give bonuses to employees or reinvest and bring business back into this country. that was one of the big purposes and goals of the tax cull bill, which we've seen play out over the last couple weeks and expected to see more come from that. thanks, guys. >> i'm jon scott in for shepard smith. the white house wrapping up their first briefing of the new year's. covering a lot of topics from the protests in iran to the number tax law and the 2018
12:03 pm
agenda. the president tweeted about these issues this morning. he's back in d.c. with a jam-packed agenda. top white house staffers will meet with congressional leaders tomorrow to talk about the 2018 agenda. white house correspondent kevin corke, fresh out of the briefing and live at the white house for us now. kevin? >> well, let me tell you, it's interesting, the first briefing of the year. for me it's fun. i've done a few of these obviously. both the trump administration and the obama administration, the bush administration. they're always a little different. no matter what. what was interesting today, however, jon, i felt like the white house is interested not just in international issue, pakistan and iran, north korea, a real focus on the domestic agenda and in particular i asked sarah sanders if she could talk about what the agenda in the early part of the year might look like.
12:04 pm
here's what she had to say. >> obviously the budget is first and foremost, a big priority right now and a big priority in the immediate term. the president wants a two-year budget deal that provides realistic budget caps and provides certainty for national security. that's the number 1 priority. that is the focus front and center of the conversations taking place this week. beyond that, it will be talking about those four other priorities that i outlined and what the strategy to get maximum sucks says would look like. >> maximum success. obviously not just a meeting tomorrow on capitol hill. we're talking about a big meeting this weekend with senior leadership. the idea being, jon, simply speaking, they want the make sure they go into 2018 with the same head of steam that they left 2017 with and try to keep getting things done. meanwhile, he did -- she talked a great deal about international issues. you heard about pakistan and why the president sort of seemed to be taking a shot at leadership there. something else i found
12:05 pm
interesting, obviously the story about iran. what best is the message to deliver to the iranian people in particular in the face of this onslaught by the government there to quail and dissent. here's what sarah sanders said about that. >> i think the ultimate end game would be that the citizens and the people of iran are actually given basic human rights. he certainly would like to see then stop being a state sponsor of terror. that is something the whole world would like to see. >> the whole world wants to see justice for the iranian people. can they obtain freedom? that is a real tough question that she tried to answer, one that we'll be watching carefully, john, in the days and weeks ahead. >> thanks, kevin. much more on the unrest in iran. nikki haley addressing the united nations this afternoon.
12:06 pm
will tough talk result in change? that's ahead. first, a fox urgent. republican senator orrin hatch of utah says he will not run for re-election after serving 40 years in the u.s. senate. his retirement opens the door for mitt romney to run for the seat. here's part of senator hatch's announcement. >> when the president visited utah last month, he said i was a fighter. i've always been a fighter. i was an amateur boxer in my youth. i brought that fighting spirit with me to washington. every good fighter knows when to hang up the gloves. for me, that time is soon approaching. >> hatch is the longest serving republican in the senate. he chairs the finance committee and played an important role in passing the republican tax overhaul last month. chad pergram joins us now on the phone. chad, tell us about the intrigue over this announcement. >> well, a lot of people thought
12:07 pm
several months ago that orrin hatch would be out the door. finish tax reform, stick around until and then make his announcement. then we started to get signals that he was leaning towards staying. now we have the announcement. he's served seven terms in the senate. this would be an eighth. he's been in the senate since 1977. it's interesting that he defeated frank moss in 1976, the last democrat to have a statewide seat in the senate there. there's a famous quote from that race from orrin hatch. he said what do you call a senator that served in office for 18 years? you call them home. he leaves on a high note, having passed tax reform here. he was either the chair or the ranking member of the senate judiciary committee for many years. he played a key role in the clarence thomas confirmation hearings in 1991. he was the top republican on that committee at that point. and he was one of the senators on the republican side that didn't want to reopen the hearings once anita hill came
12:08 pm
forward. so something that has been at the forefront of those issues a long time. mitt romney would be the number 1 person to look at. some people indicate that does mitt romney care about utah? he has these mormon ties. you look back to san diego with the multilayers and the car lift, is he too california vers versus utah. other people are chris steward and mia love, republican congressman from utah. she has a tough re-election from been mcadams. some think she might take a look at the race and think she could do better statewide than just in her district. you probably cannot rule out evan mcmullen. he ran for president last time as well. >> fascinating time in utah. today is the day that al franken
12:09 pm
is leaving the senate, huh? >> right. he has formally resigned. tomorrow we get two new senators, tina smith, the democrat. she's the lieutenant governor. she will be sworn in and take his seat. she will serve the rest of the year and run for the rest of the term in the fall of this year. and then we also get doug jones, the democrat from alabama. he will be sworn in tomorrow. with e-- oh we got a picture of him flowing to washington d.c. they will swear them in after noon eastern time in washington tomorrow. an interesting tidbit here when you look at seniority in the senate. sometimes they look at somebody that has been a governor a house member or somebody that gets in a couple days before somebody else. it goes down to state population. based on the precedent in this case, tina smith would have seniority to doug jones. she would be 99th in seniority. doug jones would be number 100.

12:11 pm
show the american people that they can get things done. they're pushing a big rock up a steep hill because normally in an off year, the party that is in power loses seats. so they have to tell the american people we're doing something for you, we're trying to do something good for you so they can run on that in 2018. that's why you hear the clock ticking in the background in washington d.c. >> and when people see their paychecks in february when the new tax rates are taking effect, people will be happy. >> john, i think that's the case. they are going to be happy. i am very excited about 2018. i think i think year is even better than last year for the trump administration. i think that they have warmed up. they have got some momentum. they have got a legislative achievement under their belt and we'll see even though the dynamics have shifted, particularly in the senate, we're going to see them continue that momentum and get some more victories. >> i want to stick with you a

minute, nick. the charge against president trump's first year is that he really didn't get a lot of legislative work done except for the tax bill. is that a miss -- misinformed opinion? was he doing other things with deregulation or is he learning on the job? >> without a doubt -- no, jon, last year was a tremendous year for the trump administration, whether we want to look at deregulation, look at the court system or look at what happened in the economy. this was a tremendously successful year. anybody that tells you otherwise isn't telling the truth. and i think that this year with all of that experience, obviously president trump came to the job as a very successful and esteemed business man. he's a deal maker.
12:13 pm
he knows there's democratic votes on offer. we have senator mccaskill, senator donnelly, senator manchin, all from states that president trump won handily that i think will be quite inclined to vote with the president. >> i was going to ask chuck about that. chuck, you talked about the republican -- the problems republicans are having getting legislation passed. but democrats are not going to have a picnic when it comes to the senate races in 2018. >> look, about a year ago, i run campaigns for a living. i'm not possibility analyst. i run campaigns. it's tough out there. it's going to be tough for democrats. but there's a glimmer of hope because trump is so unpopular with the independents in the middle. i remind you in alabama, he won by a lot. we're talking about doug jones getting on an airplane to alabama to fly to washington d.c. sure, roy moore was flawed. in virginia, the republicans had a 16 seat majority. it was the red of red states.
12:14 pm
because trump was so unpopular, democrats tied the state house race in virginia and that could be a focus of things to come. >> it will be one to watch. chuck, nick, have to say good-bye, gentlemen. >> thank you. >> pleasure. >> ahead the uprising inside iran. the country's leader blaming outsiders for the demonstrations. the protesters say they're upset over the bad economy there and rising food prices. security forces have been killing them in the streets. now fox news has obtained a secret report on how the government is trying to tamp down the tensions. that's next. led new car. the guy says, "you picked the wrong insurance plan." no, i picked the wrong insurance company. with new car replacement™, we'll replace the full value of your car plus depreciation. liberty mutual insurance.

12:41 pm
i think it was a move by north korea to try to undercut the administration's rhetoric that has been opposed to diplomacy. you saw sarah sanders at the press podium didn't sort of come out so directly against it. in trump's tweet earlier today, the president's tweet left the door somewhat open as to whether or not the talks could be productive. i'm not saying it's going to yield a magical solution overnight. in order to get to a solution or in order to get a temporary thaw in an escalating crisis, you have to get parties to the table. >> everybody says a solution to the problem has to go through china. president trump was glowing in his praise of china in the early months of his administration. but some of that seems to have soured lately. is he putting pressure on the chinese to put more pressure on north korea? >> i think what you saw, ambassador haley did a great job in multilateral sanctions. doing a good job in terms of getting the chinese to ramp up
12:42 pm
their pressure. may have been overly optimistic in how far the chinese were going to go, putting sanctions and words down in theory. i think the chinese could be doing more having said that. again, you can keep ramping up economic pressure and sanctions. at the end of the day, a solution will still need to get parties to the table to get to some sort of negotiated agreement, whether it's giving up weapons, freezing the program. that's how nuclear weapons in the past have been thwarted an abandoned. it's rare they are abandoned alone on sanctions. >> jon: thanks, tara. >> thank you. >> jon: new fall out from a "new york times" report rank ago australian diplomat for rush interference in the u.s. election. what officials down under reportedly furious about it. first, a fox news weather alert.
