princeton. they didn't have fancy parkas. they slogged through the cold and ambushed cornwallis' 8,000 soldiers with nothing but leather boots on the love of freedom. most of the morale of the revolutionaries, renew their confidence in washington's men were on their way. somehow they didn't without reports of polar vortexes, bombs, cyclone, whatever. that's all for us tonight. thanks for joining us. it's cold in here but shannon bream, where she is it's always warm. >> shannon: we are going to try to have a hot show. thank you. show down on capitol hill. facing a deadline to give house intel chairman devin nunes the goods on the so-called dirty dossier. top doj and fbi figures meet with house speaker paul ryan. we will have the latest developments. as the war of words grows to a fever pitch behind the head of the research of the dossier and the g.o.p.

president trump battles his former top advisor steve bannon. when it comes to russia, is bannon destroying his own credibility or the president? the big four meet with top white house advisors but not the president. steve cortez predicts who will blink first. they are calling her iran's rosa parks, one of many women leading the uprising. is the american left rushing to their defense or ignoring them? we will investigate. hello and welcome to "fox news @ night." i'm shannon bream in washington. new tonight in the feud between president trump and his former chief strategist steve bannon, abc news reporting president trump is lawyering up against bannon after excerpts from a new book republic george bannon speaks critically about trump and his family. in one quote, using the

president son of treasonous behavior. tonight the president's lawyers are reportedly sending bannon a cease and desist letter demanding he refrain from making disparaging comments against the president and his family. "abc news" reports the letter says "you have breached the agreement by communicating with author michael wolff about mr. crum, his family members and the company, the campaign. disclosing confidential information making disparaging statements and at some cases defamatory statements to mr. wolf about mr. trump." the attorney says the remedies could include monetary damages, without naming a specific dollar amount, caps a blistering day between the president of his former top advisor. mr. trump says he has "lost his mind." white house calls the book trashy tabloid fiction but the author says he was given unfettered access inside the white house and completed more than 200 interviews. doug mckelway joins us with the latest on the war of words
8:03 pm
between the president and his once right-hand man, steve bannon. >> good evening. steve bannon has lobbed perhaps the most explosive rhetorical grenade over the white house fence yet. "the wall street journal" reports tonight that michael wolf's student to be released book "fire and fury" includes this quote, that presidential daughter ivanka trump is "as dumb as a brick." a series of bannon" were released earlier. one describes the trump tower meeting between the president son and a group of russians as treasonous and unpatriotic. bannon says of special prosecutor mueller's team, they are going to crackdown jr. like an egg on national tv. more on the trump tower meeting "they didn't have any lawyers, even if you thought that this was not treasonous or unpatriotic or bad expletive and i think it's all that, you should've called the fbi immediately." bannon is quoted on the mueller investigation.

"this is all about money laundering." mueller chose andrew weissmann first. donald trump jr. fired back today on twitter. "just look at the comments section on breitbart. wow. when bannon has lost bright bart, he's left with nothing." the president unleashed a flurry of counterparts go punches -- counter punches. the white house spokeswoman sarah sanders blasted the book
8:05 pm
calling it trashy tabloid fiction. chairman of the american conservative union said bannon is going to lose this barroom brawl. >> steve bannon is an important voice but i think he is grayling marginalized his voice because this looks personal, it looks petty. it's about who did the most help donald trump win. it's about revision and it helps the left. >> the books author michael wolf was given unusual access to the white house. he says he did over 200 interviews with white house and campaign staff. he has often been criticized for inaccuracies. his book is slated for release next tuesday. >> shannon: i wonder if it will sell many copies. doug mckelway, thank you very much. good to see you. as we've been reporting, the president's attorneys sending bannon a cease and desist letter. joining a stock about that and more, isaac wright, former executive director of the pro hillary clinton correct the record super pac. alexander smith, executive director for america rising. great to have you with us on a quiet night in d.c.
8:06 pm
the news breaks hour by hour. let's talk about this. doug had this quote that i want to read. attributed to steve bannon. "you realize where this is going. it's all about money laundering. mueller chose andrew weissmann first and he's a money laundering guy. it goes through through paul manafort and jared kushner." he had some pretty nasty things to say about jared kushner. not surprising. they didn't seem to get along. >> they have had a long-running political feud. i think the problem for trump is this is the beginning of the unraveling. we've had four indictment so far. a couple -- >> laura: not related to the trump allegations of russia collusion. the man >> prior to the campaign with the same regime that supposedly meddled in our election.
8:07 pm
the others, michael flynn, indictment for lying to the fbi. collusion with russia, papadopoulos. they have taken guilty pleas. we will see where it goes. this seems to be the beginning of the end for trump. what does that mean in the investigation? doesn't lead back to trump? i don't know. only time will tell. it seems more in his inner circle are starting to flee for cover, even people like steve bannon who is not exactly a beacon of ethics himself because if you read closely was been released of what he signed, he didn't condemn that they did this "treasonous, unpatriotic" thing. he complained that they did it in a way to get caught. >> shannon: he says it's over. what do you say? >> beginning of the end of the investigation. >> shannon: the president sent a scorched earth statement out. he said "now that he's on his own, steve is learning winning
8:08 pm
isn't as easy as i make it look. steve had very little to do with our historic victory which was delivered by the forgotten men and women of the country. post quote he to roy moore, bacy bannon. clearly trying to distance himself. >> i think steve bannon made the mistake of confusing president trump's abilities for his own. i think it's important to consider that with respect to russia, we are really talking about two different things. we have the formal investigation, important investigation going on. on the other hand, we have this palace intrigue in d.c. interesting, great gossip, great fodder for people like me and isaac and you. but i'm not sure this is where the american people really have their attention. the president was elected by the american people. steve bannon wasn't. at the end of the day, i think they're looking for president trump's agenda rather than the suppose it words of the
8:09 pm
hired help. >> shannon: some of what he is saying sounds not positive for the president. i want to play a little bit of what he said on "60 minutes" when he was officially a part or he just separated from the white house. seems very much to be in the president's corner. >> there may have been -- look, i was there. it's a total and complete farce. russia collusion is a first. >> shannon: isaac, that's what he said in september. >> i think that's a really crucial thing about why this is more than just palace intrigue, why this is potentially criminal. he raises the point in the book about the meeting where kushner and manafort and the senior circle went to a meeting with russian officials under the auspices they would be receiving opposition research on hillary clinton, "dirt" on hillary clinton. it had a monetary value. that would make it illegal had that transmission actually
8:10 pm
happened. >> shannon: do you think if the clinton campaign have been offered the same thing they would've showed up. >> absolutely not. >> i think the hillary clinton campaign would have shown up to a meeting like that. >> shannon: agree to disagree. >> i would be curious. you run a research organization. would you show up to a foreign government offering you an illegal contribution. >> shannon: not represented to them as an official representative of the russian government. >> here something to consider. you can see through steve bannon's past statements that he has a vendetta out for the trump children. in alabama, he openly mocked ivanka trump on stage at the roy moore event. he has an agenda out for the kids. it wouldn't be surprising to me that he would say these things about don jr. he has a penchant for attacking the trump children.
8:11 pm
look at the scorecard since bannon has left the white house. on one hand we have tax form that got passed, huge victory for president trump and the republicans. on the other hand, we have steve bannon who hangs the alabama senate race around his neck. >> the meeting in new york, that's for the bombshell is. it wasn't the fact that the meeting happened. we knew it happened, we knew the intention. it's been documented. bannon made the point in the book there is no logical way that the president's son-in-law, his campaign chief strategist at the time, manafort, and the inner circle were going to a meeting to get secret dirt from a foreign government on hillary clinton and trump didn't know about it. that was the point that bannon raised in the excerpt, that if true is a bombshell. >> shannon: we will see. the president has denied he had any knowledge of it or any meaning about that. if the facts prove otherwise, he will have to answer that question but for now he stands by it. for going to leave it there for

now. i'm sure there be another scandal soon. good to see you both. this is a fox news alert. the other showdown in washington between the chair in the house intelligence committee and the doj. justice department said it's ready to hand over documents regarding the russian investigation to the committee as the deadline is closing in. the republican chairman of the committee devin nunes had given the doj and fbi until tonight at midnight ahead of the documents and a witness list related to the so-called dirty dossier, the salacious unverified report on president trump's alleged activities in russia before was elected compiled by a former british secret service agent. house intelligence committee its reach an agreement to get what it asked for. looking for to receiving the documents over the coming days. all this happened atop doj and fbi officials met with speaker of the paul ryan today. here is chief intelligence correspondent catherine herridge. >> fox news has confirmed the deputy attorney general and fbi

2014. over two years before mr. manafort served in the trump campaign. >> writing in "the new york times," the opposition research firm behind the unverified trump dossier called on congress to release transcripts of their closed-door testimony. the cofounders of fusion gps said they do not believe the dossier alone sparked the fbi russia case. republican senator chuck grassley called out the former journalist who he says demanded the transcripts be kept confidential. refusing to answer dozens of questions voluntarily. grassley said the committee's invitation to testify publicly remains on the table. new details confirmed by fox news raise questions about whether amy 26 team meeting between an australian diplomat and a trump campaign aide kick started the probe. the former director of national intelligence had that campaign aide was not on his radar. >> george papadopoulos was not a name on my scope. it probably was one of several

stimulants for the investigation but was not the only factor. >> sources to foxy astral and government first made contact with u.s. officials in london about papadopoulos and his claims russia damaging information on hillary clinton. australia's ambassador to the united states did not formally meet with the fbi until after the democratic convention which ended in july 28. the hacked emails were already public. on the amount of manafort suite justice department called it for less. there was no immediate response from the special counsel. >> shannon: thank you very much. three vice president on hand at the capitol. vice president mike vice presidd by joe biden and walter mondale. the newly minted senators are doug jones of alabama and tina smith of minnesota who is replacing al franken. in an executive order she might president trump abolishing the commission he appointed to study voter fraud.

>> shannon: kim jong un in his new year's speech to set the nuclear button is on his desk at all times. president trump responded with his tweet that his nuclear button is bigger and more powerful than the north koreans. and so a ghost. the hermit kingdom has recently reopened medications with south korea and may send a delegation to next month's winter all the picks. national security correspondent jennifer griffin on the aftermath of the tweets and the latest on the standoff. >> no official reaction from the defense secretary to the president's tweet about how big his nuclear button is. certainly there are concerns that presidents tweet ratchets up the motto on model brinkmanship and could interfere with efforts by south korea's president to engage north korea in talks. north korea has not officially
8:21 pm
accepted the invitation of south korea's president despite kim jong un having proposed talks in his new year's address. south korea has proposed those talks be held in the border village next tuesday. china's foreign minister responded to the presidents tweet this morning. >> translator: currently this situation is complex. what is said should be conducive in alleviating the situation. >> north korea resumed a hotline with south korea which has been used twice in the last 24 hours. that hotline had been down since last february. i am told there was more movement seen at known ballistic missile bases as recently as this morning. last week the intelligence community started seeing movement near pyongyang that suggest north korea was prepping for another icbm launch. that test was expected to take place this week. i'm told by well-placed u.s. defense sources here at the

pentagon north korea's research and develop a schedule is likely to be fast tracked to fix the problems encountered during the last intercontinental ballistic missile launch. it was higher than ever before but failed in reentry. i'm told there are signs the test could be delayed perhaps because of the anticipated talks between north and south korea. there's a feeling among intelligence analyst that kim would like to come to the table with an even more advanced capability. i am also told of north korea does not begin dismantling its nuclear program that the u.s. will take preemptive military action in the coming months. the situation remains delicate. still jennifer griffin at the pentagon. thank you. the iran revolutionary guard insists tonight it has defeated what it's calling the sedition and that antigovernment protests are under control. for then 20 people have died during or than six nights of unrest in iran and reuters is reporting there are fresh protests in some cities tonight.

thousands attended pro-government rallies. analysts say many are government workers. iran's supreme leader tuesday blamed the original protest on meddling by iran's enemy. joining me to talk about that and more, lanhee chen. a hoover fellow and policy director. >> good to be with you. i want to read a little bit oval we are getting. he says: where do we go with that statement?
8:24 pm
social media was shut down. it's tough to know accurately about numbers and people and what continues. >> it's difficult, to know exactly. one thing that we always knew was that the iranian regime is going to strike back hard. this should be no surprise that they are taking this action and they are advertising this action. i think one of the challenges with the current uprising is that it doesn't really have a singular leader in the same way that the uprising in 2009 had come of the so-called green revolution. of course the original islamic revolution back in the late 1970s. this particular set of protest to the little bit more diffuse. it lacks a central leader. it originally started as an anticorruption, sort of antieconomic policy sort of protest. it now has morphed into a general antigovernment protest. we'll have to see what happens. there's no question the iranian regime has the power to set down whatever revolution, whatever
8:25 pm
sort of protester might be. they are exercising that power. >> shannon: jonathan, ambassador haley has sent people are crying out for freedom and it's up to us to stand with him. how does that translate logistically, practically? >> even saying that is a departure from what we witnessed in 2009 when the obama administration pretty much ignored the green movement and left those poor protesters to the crack forces, the revolutionary guards who just demolished them. slaughtered so many. it's a vicious cycle. even coming out and speaking out against this and letting the iranian regime know that they are on watch, knowing that the united states is paying attention this time, if such an important thing. now the other thing that ambassador haley has announced is that she is pushing for security council meeting. that's going to be a little bit difficult given the that russid
8:26 pm
china are members of the security council and then they are not known for being liberal democracies and have a track record of crushing dissent in their own countries. i wouldn't anticipate too much traction within the security council but even bringing it to the attention of the security council, trying to get a meeting in place, it remains to be seen when that meeting might take place. it remains to be seen in what format that meeting would happe happen. it's difficult to gauge at this point. the other things that can happen here is that you can push very hard to try to get some sort of sanctions on the books to pay attention to what's happening on the ground, to pay attention to who the crack forces are, who the interior ministry people are who are breaking people's heads and crushing the rebellion in iran. so that you can actually go after these people come up with

them on notice, blacklist them, try to get something done so that they answer for their crimes. >> shannon: i believe it was the head of the human rights council who said he expects iran to take notice of what happened and actually investigate deaths or serious injuries. we will see but it's clear the world is watching. i want to ask you quickly about north korea. we are just about out of time. we are hearing about open conversations. hotline that have been not used between the two countries is now functioning again. they are talking nicely about the olympics and other things. >> the danger here is that what kim jong un is trying to do is drive a wage between south korea and the united states. obviously south korea, our ally, our partner, their goal here is that maybe kim jong un is trying to say we will work with the south koreans and try to run counter to what u.s. policy may be. that's why it's important for the u.s. to keep pressure up

comic to continue to try to keep trying involved and engaged in this situation which they have been more so since president trump took office. >> shannon: we are out of time. we have to leave it there. great to see both of you tonight. thank you both. coming up, the face of iran's antigovernment protest. this young lady is being dumped iran's rosa parks. there's more to her story. are the women behind iran's protest getting their due credit? where is there a legal war on fake news? we will tell you. the immigration shut on capitol hill continues. drop administration doubling down on calls for a border wall or they say no deal on daca. later, get prepared for the bomb cyclone. extreme weather could be headed your way. adam klotz is in the extreme weather center. >> it's called a bomb cyclone because we are looking at a low pressure system and the pressure continues to drop as it moves up the coast, and it's going to explode. i will tell you what that means coming up after the break.

i had tried to quit before, i had tried the patch. i tried to go cold turkey; it didn't work for me. i didn't think i could quit until i used chantix. along with support, chantix (varenicline) is proven to help people quit smoking. chantix reduced my urge to smoke. when you try to quit smoking, with or without chantix, you may have nicotine withdrawal symptoms. some people had changes in behavior or thinking, aggression, hostility, agitation, depressed mood, or suicidal thoughts or actions with chantix. serious side effects may include seizures, new or worse heart or blood vessel problems, sleepwalking or allergic and skin reactions which can be life-threatening. stop chantix and get help right away if you have any of these. tell your healthcare provider if you've had depression or other mental health problems. decrease alcohol use while taking chantix. use caution when driving or operating machinery. the most common side effect is nausea. after 25 years, i walked away from cigarettes. ask your doctor if chantix is right for you. many insurance plans cover chantix for a low or $0 copay.

>> shannon: a mixture of snow and freezing rain hitting parts of the south tonight. a monster winter storm moving up the east coast. some are calling it a bomb cyclone. fox news meteorologist adam klotz joins us live to explain. sounds terrible. >> there were folks in northern florida over the earlier hours today seeing some snowfall, down
8:33 pm
in southern georgia. that same system is running up the coast who we are beginning to see some of that snow across the carolinas, stretching into areas of virginia and d.c. several hours away before new york city gets it but it will be happening in the overnight hours as the system continues to lift its way up the coast. the temperatures are close enough that this is coming a snowfall at this point. let's put into motion for you. pay attention the time-stamp as we track it. it looks as though through the overnight hours would begin to see new york city but pay attention to the track. it gets closer to the coastline as it travels to the north. that means more snow the farther north and east to go. boston, likely to see 6 to 12 inches. maine, more than that. as you had that direction, expect conditions to get worse. otherwise there's plenty of other issues. we've gotten winter watches and warning stretches from the mid atlantic come out running up into maine, an area that's going to exceed the absolute worst of it. it's not just about the snow.
8:34 pm
it's also about the wind. you start to see some of these deeper colors and we are talking about 52 max 60-mile-an-hour winds. it's going to be an issue. very cold tomorrow. we have a lot of folks on the west coast watching. numbers in the 70s. i would love to be out there right now. >> shannon: i would too. that's only what my parents have in florida. if you don't get it all the time, it's pretty exciting. >> not for me. zero i hear you. thank you. new year, new laws. like the self-serve gas line 36 oregon counties. oregon and new jersey have long been the only two states that prohibit motors from pumping their own gas. some of the reaction has been pretty funny. a62-year-old admitted he didn't know how to pump gas. a lot of people saying they don't want to smell like it. the internet was merciless in its response. one wisconsin resident writing "it's not that hard, people."

no secret california governor jerry brown and state lawmakers are no fans of the president. the new tax law the president's push to cut down on illegal immigration and chain migration. trace gallagher reports with golden state lawmakers are fighting back. >> in california which has by far the nation's largest illegal immigration population, it is now against the law for police to ask people about their immigration status or participate in federal immigration enforcement actions. california lawmakers have openly said the law in response to president trump's immigration agenda. there was no mention of president obama deporting more illegal immigrants in each of his eight years then president trump did during his first year. in sponsoring the sanctuary statesville, california democratic state senator kevin deleon cited this texas dashcam video of a mother pleading with a state trooper not to deport the father of her child.
8:36 pm
kevin deleon called the video heartbreaking but he failed to mention the heartbreak endured by the family of kate steinle, who was killed by illegal immigrants with numerous families who lost loved ones to illegal immigrants driving drunk. immigrations and customs environment has blasted california lawmakers for putting politics over safety. quoting "disturbingly, the legislation serves to codify a dangerous policy that deliberately obstructs our country's immigration laws and shelters serious alien criminal offenders. california is working to circumvent the administration it comes to taxes. under the new federal tax law, residents are only allowed to write off $10,000 in state and local taxes. california lawmakers believe that unfairly targets a high tax states.

they are now proposing that residents be allowed to pay the first 10,000 of their tax bill and make a charitable contribution to the state for the rest. california gets its money but taxpayers would get to write off the entire amount. new york governor andrew cuomo also believed the new tax laws unfair to his state. instead of looking for a loophole, cuomo is looking to sue the feds, accusing them of double taxation. >> shannon: where in the world, and about 90 seconds. irish police investigating a staffing for possible terrorism. a japanese man was stabbed to death. two injured in separate attacks. an 18-year-old egyptian has been arrested. he had been seeking asylum in ireland. prominent lawmaker becoming one of the first hit by new hate speech laws in germany. she leads germany's anti-immigrant alternative and got in trouble for slamming the

8:43 pm
steve cortez. what do you make of this? you know what the democrats position has been. you are not getting your funding if we don't get daca. the president says you don't get daca if i don't get my wall. getting rid of the visa lottery and chain migration. is there anywhere they are going to meet? >> i think eventually they will. elections have constant lenses and the republicans in particular donald trump were very clear on this issue in 2016. i was part of the campaign and i will tell you out of the guinea single issue resonated with voters quite as starkly as this one did. building the wall and securing the seven border. this was a promise made in it's going to be a promise kept. regarding daca i think that president has shown great compassion. what president obama did was try to act like a king and by executive edict he tried to wave his scepter and make law on his own. that's not the way it works in the united states. now we are doing at the right way with congress. i want the daca young adults protected. with the president showed compassion extending the deadline. something has to come back in

return. that's the art of the deal. that's politics. i think it's restriction zone chain migration and its resources for the border. both of those are foundational principles of the trump movement. >> shannon: interesting that dhs secretary nielsen was asked about whether or not the president foresees a path to citizenship for the dreamers. she said "i think his hearing to hearing about the different possibilities. there hasn't been any decision from the white house." that wasn't a "no" ." you know that upsets a lot of people. if they hear there is even a hint that the president would agree to a path to citizenship in this scenario, you know the base isn't going to be happy. >> i think that's true. i would also say the president's defense if he does make that decision and i don't know where he's in a land on a but if he does, the daca people are in a different category of illegal immigrant. they didn't choose to break the laws. they were brought here as children.
8:45 pm
they should be treated differently from other illegal immigrants who do not deserve a path to amnesty. my advice to the president is they should be allowed to stay, these daca folks, but not a path to citizenship. one of the reasons democrats insist on it isn't because they have great compassion. it's because they want their votes. the democratic party has been crass on this year. they want as much at ministry -- amnesty for as many people as possible. they believe they will vote for them in return. stand on principle. protecting legal immigrants, people like my father who went the difficult, expensive, time-consuming process to become a legal american. it's disrespectful to them saying that others who do it illegally can hop the line and become citizens. >> shannon: i think a lot of people assume wrongly that these are people fleeing violence in south and central america. these daca people are from all over the world.
8:46 pm
