quickly and that can become a very dangerous situation. >> the storm the way it was coming up the coast. good sized. janice was telling us about it yesterday. >> i hope you feel better. "happening now" starts right now. >> jon: more on this, a dangerous winter storm classified as a bomb cyclone is now slamming the northeast dumping up to a foot and a half of snow with fierce 55 mile-per-hour winds. has forced 3,000 flight cancellations already after knocking out power to tens of thousands of people across the southeast. we'll be monitoring the situation throughout the hour. the bombshell new book on donald trump's white house making waves beyond washington as the white house now moves to block publication of michael wolff's explosive book. i'm jon scott. >> i'm melissa francis. good to be back with you.

>> jon: glad we both made it in. >> fire and fury inside the trump white house paints a picture of a president who never expected to win the election in its former white house chief of strategist, steve bannon. the white house statement when he was fired he not only lost his job, he lost his mind. steve had very little to do with our historic victory which was delivered by the forgotten men and women of this country. steve doesn't represent my base. he is only in it for himself. kevin corke is following the story from the white house and kevin within 24 hours steve bannon has commented on the president. >> we will share a bit of those comments in just a bit but clearly the white house is hoping to stop the publication of this book "fire and fury". but let's be honest, a smoke

pretends to have had influence to fool a few people with no access and no clue. whom he helped write phony books. an obvious shot at his former chief strategist. bannon says he is still committed to the trump agenda. >> don't worry, there will be no daylight between the agenda, donald trump and the folks at breitbart and this show and the website. >> the president of the united states is a great man and i support him day in and day out going through the country given the trump miracle speech or on the show or website. you don't have to worry about that. >> as for some of his more explosive comments like describing the infamous meeting at trump tower before he joined the campaign as treasonous and unpatriotic. >> people say whatever they say.

let's go verify it. at the end of the day some of it may be true, some of it may not be true. but i have to say this, if he did say it, he should get out there and walk it back. >> all this, of course, melissa as there are even more excerpts out there again the more they talk about it, the more it makes the cycle in washington and the more we have to talk about it as well. it will be that kind of day. i'll be here for you nonetheless in the snow. >> michael wolff is a hired gun. when they saw him they have to know what he writes is never flattering. >> any time you have a writer around you expect something to come out. sometimes you don't get exactly what you bargained for. >> with him never. it is always like this. interesting stuff. good fodder, thank you. >> jon: and now the president's lawyers are sending author michael wolff and his publisher a letter demanding they stop

publication of "fire and fury". they sent a letter to steve bannon claiming he violated a non-disclosure agreement by speaking to wolff. for more on this let's check in with the hill's editor in chief. we've really got three primary players here. you've got the president, you've got steve bannon but also michael wolff whose stories have been -- the accuracy of them have been challenged in the past. >> i think that will be continually some questions about this reporting and then it's a question of okay, what do you have on audio tape? certainly we haven't seen bannon dispute that he said these things. this -- jon, this is a shakespearean soap opera. the biggest intraparty fight you've seen since obama versus hillary clinton in 2008 and somewhere mitch mcconnell is smiling because remember, bannon will go after republican incumbents. this is more likely that trump is going to side with mitch
8:06 am
mcconnell on protecting republican incumbents instead of rogue primarily challengers. that's a big deal. the ramifications of this fight are enormous. bannon says he will play nice now. what about a month from now if the president continues to go after him? >> jon: interesting, too, that bannon says there were -- michael wolff says there were no ground rules for his time in the white house. that's where he supposedly picked up these stories. >> yeah. and the question of who he talked to, how often. we don't have the visitor log. we don't know that. and that's why i think the president is, as far as this legal threat, i do think and agree this is more of a p.r. move of going after it, the first amendment gives a lot of rights on books whether they are right or wrong. they will need to get off that book. they have to respond but then they have to move to their agenda. a big month for the trump white house. >> jon: but if you want to sell
8:07 am
a lot more books than you otherwise might have, isn't one method to try to shut down publication and go after the publisher with a cease and desist letter? >> exactly. everyone wants to read it. it seems like the most salacious stuff is out there. we don't know for a fact. i haven't read the whole book other than the excerpts. time will tell on this. trump having a great december. the tax cut bill was his biggest victory. he wants to move the momentum into this year. fighting with bannon, intraparty fights is what democrats love, honestly. >> jon: bannon was in that, you know, radio thing that he did on breitbart last night and he didn't sound particularly bitter toward the president. he sounded like a different guy than the one portrayed in the book. >> interesting to see people on the right will pick sides. do you side with the president? do you side with bannon? the drudge report, yesterday
8:08 am
tweeted that bannon is a schizophrenic. this will be who is on who's side. bannon said breitbart is his weapon. will he use it against the president? last night he indicated absolutely not. that remains to be seen. could bannon try to portray the president as becoming part of the establishment. bannon thought about running for president himself and he may try to grab that mantel of the air to the trump of 2016. >> jon: when bannon says as we heard him saying there is no daylight between the president's policies and what he will be advocating at breitbart, versus your point that mitch mcconnell's slate of mainstream republicans are going to be less challenged now by breitbart, it seems like this might have the net effect of sort of opening the arms of mainstream republicans to the
8:09 am
president. >> yes. i think that's a good point, jon. i do think that could happen because a lot of mainstream republicans are not fans of breitbart. remember -- of bannon. but bannon also reportedly in the book has gone after members of the president's family and why the president issued that unusual statement. so is there daylight? jon, what if there is a deal on the dreamers? do you think that bannon is not going to go after that deal later this month? i think he will. >> jon: i don't think he will be invited for thanksgiving at the white house any time soon. certainly not michael wolff. bob, we appreciate it. thank you. >> now to a fox news weather alert. a dangerous winter storm called a bomb cyclone certainly looks like that in that picture there, now bearing down on the northeast. the forecast calling for white-out conditions and winds as strong as 55 miles per hour. janice dean is in the fox

a tremendous storm. tons of snow with this. in some cases 1 to 3 inches of snow an hour especially on eastern long island up towards cape cod and the islands. this is really the peak of the system. we'll see upwards of a foot or more especially eastern long island and eastern portions of new england. you can see it's really tough to see out there and that's why we have blizzard warnings in effect. people are urged to stay off the roadways. kids are off of school and non-essential folks need to be at home so we can get those essentials on the roadways to help if we need be. the wind gusts in excess of 30, 40, 50 miles per hour. visibility is poor, blizzard warnings. we have a quarter mile or less in visibility and winds of 35 miles plus for extended period of time plus three hours. that's the criteria for a blizzard warning. we have that. there is a blizzard in effect. nantucket the winds are gusting
