thank you to our panel here and all of you, and henry, thank you for watching at home and join us next sunday when the next revolution will be off the air. rick leventhal is next with "fox report." >> see you next weekend. rick: the daca showdown ramps up, president trump doubling down on attacks on democrats and expressing doubt. an agreement will be reached by friday deadline. a bipartisan group of lawmakers pushes for legislation to protect so-called dreamers. i'm rick leventhal. you're watching the "fox report." the president and congress seem further apart than ever as a part of a spending deal that needs to be passed by the end of this week. it may be a pipe dream after an earlier tweet. the president said he plans to end the dreamers program in march of this one. one advocate for continued negotiation says hoping to reach an agreement. >> we must take care of the young people.

we must take care of these young people who know america as their country. as the only country they know. it's not fair, it's not right and not just. we must not give up or give in, continue to press on and get a deal. rick: fox team coverage, molly hen i thinkberg and phil keating near the president's mar-a-lago estate. phil, all quiet at the winter white house tonight? >> reporter: everything is quiet for the moment, rick, no public events planned for the rest of the evening as was the case all day. president has been back at mar-a-lago since early this afternoon after spending about five hours nearby. at trump international golf club, presumably taking in 18 holes like he did yesterday, but as for today, the white house not officially confirming that. as for daca and immigration reform, well, earlier this

morning before we left, the president tweeting this out from mar-a-lago, daca is dead because the democrats don't really want it. they want to talk and take debt relief needed money away from the military. still optimistic on "fox news sunday." >> i do not believe daca is dead, but what i would say is from my perspective, of course, is the secretary of homeland security, it's not a daca deal, it's a security deal. what my role is to make sure we don't end up here again, close the loopholes to ensure the temporary populations not only take the dangerous journey to get here but when they get here we are able to promptly move them so we don't end up with the category of daca again. >> reporter: regarding getting a daca deal with democrats is number one. he wants congress to fully fund his request to pay for the new border wall.

you may recall as a candidate, president trump, then candidate trump promised the public mexico would pay for that. other conditions include reforming the visa lottery as well as chain migration when some member of the family is here on a green card, and because of, that family members overseas get fast track. rick: phil week heard from republicans saying negotiations stalled with the nastiness on thursday. what do you hear about that? >> reporter: thursday is the day, of course, that began all the nastiness. that's the day the president inside the oval office meeting is accused of referring to haiti, el salvador and african nations as, quote, s-hole countries. that's an incorrect quote. i'm paraphrasing, not using the cuss word alleged to be involved, and for much of the day all of the beltway dialogue especially this morning on the sunday morning talk shows is

whether the president used that term which some say derogatory, others called outright racist or whether the president did not say that at all which is what he tweeted out friday. dick durbin was in the meeting and friday in front of the cameras, he did say the president did use that phrase. secretaries nielsen and tom cotton of arkansas and david perdue of georgia can't or don't recall hearing trump say that. some of them have accused durbin of making it up leading to this defense this morning by senate minority leader chuck schumer -- onto more happier times this afternoon at mar-a-lago, president trump greeting well wishers he saw along southern boulevard in west palm beach, the route connect the country club, golf course with

mar-a-lago and this afternoon while heading home, the president invited a dozen or so to take pictures and personally meet with the president and for the supporters, certainly an unforgettable afternoon. as for tomorrow, nothing planned for the president. it is the official martin luther king, jr. holiday, and some point tomorrow afternoon, we're expecting president trump, first lady melania as well as son barron to reboard air force one and return to washington. rick: phil keating, outside the president's winter white house. while the republican senator david perdue blaming democrats for letting political games get in the way of real immigration reform. >> the democrats have tried for years, and the dreamer act in 2013, schumer and durbin both talked about ending parts of chain migration. so we're doing things that democrats have voted for and have supported in the past.

the problem now is you got the politics involved in washington. that's what's so frustrating to all of us in the real world. rick: molly joins us from the nation's capitol. what are the options right now. >> reporter: it's a program not a law, and the president plans to shut it down in march unless legislators send him a bill making it a law. if they let daca end in march or create a stand-alone piece of legislation affirming daca or wrap daca and immigration reform into a spending bill that funds the government. democrats say daca first. >> i, for one, will not vote for government funding until we get a deal on daca. >> reporter: a federal judge ordered that the government continued taking daca renewal applications from young illegal immigrants while a court challenge against daca makes its way through the legal system, rick? rick: molly, we're hearing

republicans want border security and a change how the u.s. looks at immigration? >> yes, not just daca alone. republicans want more comprehensive immigration reform. that may include a new process for young illegal immigrants, but also border security and according to what arkansas republican senator tom cotton says, a merit-based immigration system. >> what i'm trying to do and what senator perdue wants to do is treat people for who we are. if you're a doctor or scientist or computer programmer, it shouldn't matter whether you come from nigeria or norway or any other country on this earth. >> reporter: senator cotton says the current system that sets country quota is, quote, arbitrary and based where people are from and not who they are, rick? rick: molly, live in washington, thank you. with the clock ticking toward a government shutdown can the president and congressional republicans and democrats find common ground on a daca deal or has the political gotten too

toxic? we'll go in depth later on the "fox report." lawmakers calling for accountability over yesterday's fault ballistic missile alert in hawaii. the warning reached a million people sparking widespread panic. frightened hawaiians abandoning cars on the highway and taking shelter on the ground. there were nearly 40 minutes went by before a correction was sent out. state officials blame human error vowing to make sure it doesn't happen again. will carr is reporting live from honolulu tonight. will? >> reporter: rick, a short time before we came on, a the governor of hawaii profusely apologizing to residents here in hawaii. after the text alert came out after 8:00 a.m. saturday. it read ballistic missile threat inbound to hawaii. seek immediate shelter, this is not a deal. text alert sparked panic, residents believing north korea

fired a missile from end to end. it would only take 30 minutes to hit the state of hawaii. we spoke to a congresswoman who says this type of alert should not be in the hands of the local government. >> you know the panic, the fear that hit our residents as well as all of our visitors that were here? it's inexcusable. because it's a mistake. >> reporter: part of the problem is people had no idea what to do or where to go. one family trying to put their daughter into the sewer. others want to spend as much time as they could with their loved ones. >> come on, come on, come on. this one is open. a little bit bigger. >> we have absolutely no idea what we're supposed to do. we were already in our house, but didn't know what the procedures were. i guess just sit there. >> i was afraid, actually.

they sent a warning seek shelter, where do we go? >> reporter: what ended up happening was an employee at the emergency management agency hit a wrong button, that sent a text alert out and the way the system is set up, it took 38 minutes, 38 long minutes for the residents here in hawaii to get a correction text. and as a result, we've learned now, rick, that there are going to be state and federal hearings looking into what happened and how they can make sure this never happens again. rick: horrific mistake, we'll have more later this hour as well. thank you from honolulu. the number of people confirmed dead in the california mudslides is now 20 after authorities recovered yet another victim. list of people missing has shrunk to four. crews are working around the clock nearly a week after flash floods tore through the community of montecito. officials have made it a top priority to clear out basins

members were on board the jet. everyone made it off safely. it was raining and the plane had trouble slowing down but looking into exactly what caused it to overshoot the runway and almost wind up in the sea. palestinian president mahmoud abbas lashing out at the trump administration vowing to, quote, slap back. abbas making remarks during a meeting of the center council. >> reporter: rick, as the trump administration threatens to cut financial aid to the palestinians, palestinian president mahmoud abbas is speaking out tonight in a fiery speech, calling president trump middle east peace plan a slap in the face, adding that the palestinians will, quote, slap back. this, just the latest in growing tensions between palestinians and the white house, following president trump's unilateral decision to recognize jerusalem as israel's

capital. the move upending decades of international efforts to solve the israeli-palestinian conflict through a negotiated settlement. president trump recently tweeted his frustrations with the lack of progress to restart talks, and his administration appears to dramatically cut u.s. aid to the organization who help palestinian refugees. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has publicly lobbied for washington to cut funds to the palestinians. but other officials, particularly in the israeli security services, fear eliminated or sharply reducing u.s. financial assistance might put pressure on neighboring jordan, a key u.s. ally or even worse, a cut in aid could initiate the collapse of the palestinian government, with whom israeli security services cooperate with and rely on to combat palestinian militants.

under arrest for allegedly threatening other riders on the greyhound rolling from chicago to milwaukee. the incident sparked a police pursuit that ended in northern illinois. officers throwing down spike strips to blow out the bus' tires. thankfully no one was hurt. authorities said the suspect was an illegal immigrant. >> mr. vargas rosas, the 33-year-old, has been in our country illegally and, in fact, was deported some time ago back to mexico and you see he's back and threatening to kill americans. rick: bryan llenas has more from our new york city newsroom. >> reporter: rick, the suspect, margarito vargas rosas appeared in illinois court where a county judge denied him bond. vargas rosas was arrested and charged with making terroristic threats, a felony and disorderly conduct traveling from milwaukee to chicago with nearly 40 people on board. the sheriff says vargas rosas

is in the united states illegally from mexico. u.s. customs and border patrol tells fox news the 33-year-old suspect has been deported five times before. five. he previously has been arrested for a dui. at around 9:40 p.m., passengers on the greyhound bus began calling police saying the suspect was pacing back and forth in the aisle threatening to kill people and appeared to draw what passengers thought was a gun. >> he was just acting, acting crazy. i don't know if he was intoxicated or what he was, but he started making threats to everybody. >> almost felt like a terrorist situation, you're on a bus and the guy is saying he's got a gun. >> reporter: police chased the bus before forcefully stopping it on highway 94 in illinois using spike strips to flatten the tires because the bus driver would not pull over. passengers could not understand why the driver refused to stop. >> he thought our deputies were trying to stop someone else.

i know it sounds hard to wrap your head around how do you not know you are being pulled over? he felt we were serious when we spiked the tires, he rolled into the state of illinois where he came to a rest. he had no idea what was happening in the very far back of the bus. >> reporter: unbelievable. police say vargas rosas implied he had a gun, no gun was found. none of the nearly 40 passengers were injured. rick? rick: that is a strange story. bryan llenas reporting in new york city. dramatic video out of southern california. a car smashing into the second story of a dentist office. and there it. is it happened early this morning, the car was carrying two people when it swerved across several lanes of traffic, hit a divider and went airborne. crews had to rescue one person from the flaming car while the other managed to get out unassisted. no word yet if drugs or alcohol

. rick: i'm rick leventhal, this is "fox report". it's the bottom of the hour. if you're just joining us, the president made comments moments ago on daca to north korea. this as the blame game intensifies. president trump doubling down on attacks against democrats. the president and congress attempting to reach agreement on immigration reform as part of spending bill that must pass friday to avoid a government shutdown. the president doesn't appear optimistic he'll get this done. he tweeted earlier daca is probably dead because the democrats don't really want it, they want to talk and take desperately needed money away from the military. i as president want people coming into our country who are going to help us become strong and great again. coming in on a system based on

merit. one democrat remains hopeful they'll strike a deal. >> i'm encouraged. first of all, we have a bipartisan recommendation. a bipartisan legislation that's been worked out after they sat down last week with the president, and it seems to do everything that was asked of them. i would be very, very encouraged that hopefully all my colleagues are going to look at this in a very positive way. if the president said what he said as far as you give me something in a bipartisan way, something you work out and i'll sign it. we hope to work that out and get done. this, all the hypergoing around it is discouraging to me. rick: morgan, before we get to your reaction on all of this. we want to play back the president's comments moment ago at the international golf club in palm beach. here's president trump and then we'll get your reaction. >> there are a lot of things to talk about. we'll be talking about daca

also. reporter: [ inaudible ] i don't think the democrats want to make a deal. i think they'll talk about daca but don't want to help the daca deal. we used to say the daca children. i think you have a lot of sticking points, they're all democrat sticking points. we are ready to make a deal. they don't want it. they don't want security at the border, there are people pouring in. they don't want to stop drugs and want to take money away from the military which we cannot do. >> reporter: do you think your comments the other day made it harder? >> did you see what various senators in the room said about my comments? they were amazed. i'm not a racist. i am the least racist person you will interview. that i can tell you. >> reporter: are you going to make a deal mr. president? >> i don't know if they'll be

shut down, if there is, our military gets hurt badly. we cannot let our military get hurt. >> reporter: what happened with hawaii? >> that was a state thing, we are going to get involved with that. i love they took total responsibility. we're going to get involved. their attitude, they took responsibility. they made a mistake. >> reporter: [inaudible] >> say it? >> reporter: [inaudible] >> we hope it won't happen again. people are on edge, maybe it will solve the problem so they aren't on edge. >> reporter: [inaudible] >> we'll see what happens week have a couple of additional meetings scheduled. hopefully it's all going to work out. we will see. >> reporter: have you seen the "wall street journal"? >> the "wall street journal" quoted totally wrong, we'll see what happens with north korea. we have great talks going on.

the olympics, you know about. lot of things can happen. >> reporter: do you have the responsibility on daca? >> we're ready, able and willing to make a deal on daca, i don't think the democrats want to make a deal. the folks from daca should know the democrats are the ones that aren't going to make a deal, okay? thank you, everybody. enjoy yourself. thank you. rick: i know there's a lot there, morgan. back to daca. looked like they might be close to a deal earlier this week and now seem pretty far apart. >> reporter: right, rick, that was the president doubling down on the tweets that he sent out this morning, saying democrats don't want to make a deal. certainly seems those comments show the bipartisan deal on daca are all the more unlikely ahead of this crucial government shutdown deadline. the president emphasizing that

democratstor blame if a deal isn't reached. if the government is shut down, pin the blame on democrats there. certainly doesn't seem like they are anywhere closer to a bipartisan deal despite progress made last week. rick: part of the progress by the bipartisan group of senators to include money for the border wall. then what happened? >> well, it was thrown into disarray last friday when the reports came out about alleged comments that trump made during the meeting on daca with bipartisan lawmakers. obviously, that is really roiled the debate and dominated it over this and seems trump is taking a hard line on democrats now especially because many of them have come out highly criticizing them for these comments that he is said to have made disparaging haiti and other african countries. that's thrown a wrench in things and influenced the

debate at this point. rick: is a government shutdown likely? what's the sense in d.c.? >> well, there's always that threat. i think that republicans and democrats both have reasons not to want to shut the government down. that's certainly not -- certainly a political liability for either party, i think at this point. president also, though he seeks to blame democrats, blame pinned on himself as well because he's been so, you know, drawing such a hard line on the things he wants out of this daca deal. so i think it's possible, but at this point, you know, there are several days left until the government shuts down and we see congress scram ling to get the issues resolved. rick: one of the things he's firm on wanting is curtailing chain migration, seems the democrats are holding out on this? >> multiple things he's demanding, the funds for the border watch. democrats are not really giving him too much and doesn't seem to be willing to give them much

either. at this point, it seems to be stalled and, of course, as i mentioned, the controversy surrounding that meeting on friday really hasn't helped things. it's furthered the partisan divides and republicans have been critical of the president as well. so that certainly hasn't been helpful for him. rick: we heard from the deputy white house press secretary on "fox news sunday" suggesting the leaks from the meeting that you referred to, about the comments that the president allegedly made could have spiked hope for resolution. seems like the two sides are now seriously butting heads and further apart than they could have been? >> it's roiled the debate, as i mentioned. we've got republicans coming out and criticizing the president, representative mia love, and then have you others defending him. it's not exactly clear what happened in that meeting but what is clear it's thrown the

debate over daca in quite a tizzy and i think it's going to continue to influence it and dominate the conversation going forward the next few days. rick: one other question on the topic, morgan. immigration officials are encouraging some 800,000 dreamers to apply for renewals now before it's too late. you can explain why that's happening? >> because the trump administration plans to shut this down in march. and, of course, if congress doesn't agree on a deal to actually make this program law, it's going to expire. rick: yeah, we're going to ask you to stay there for a minute if you don't mind. want to get your thoughts on another major story making waves in our nation's capitol. lawmakers demanding answers after the false ballistic missile alert that sent hawaii into a panic saturday morning. trump administration said it had nothing to do with the mistake but committed to a repeat of that mistake. ellison barber is joining us.

ellison, the fcc is looking into this? >> reporter: the investigation is going on. chairman ajit pai said based on what they've seen so far, quote, it appears the government of hawaii did not have reasonable safeguards or process controls in place to prevent the transmission of a false alert. moving forward, the investigation will focus on what steps need to be taken to ensure something like this doesn't happen again. the secretary of the department of homeland security said this on "fox news sunday." >> we're working with state and locals to ensure not only that the messaging is clear but what to do next is clear as well. how we can best support them and they're the first lines and the first responders. unfortunate situation but we're all working together to make sure it doesn't happen again. >> reporter: the fcc and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle say what happened in hawaii. the false alarm, the time it took to correct it is unacceptable, not only because

of the panic it caused for so many people living there but the potential harm it caused in the trust in the emergency alert system. rick: lawmakers none too pleased on this. >> reporter: they're saying across the board this cannot happen again. hawaiian representative is saying it needs to go beyond sirens. >> what makes me angry is yes that this false alarm went out and we have to fix that in hawaii, but really we've got to get to the underlying issue here of why are the people in the country of hawaii facing a nuclear threat from north korea today and what is the president doing urgently to eliminate that threat? >> reporter: you heard just a minute ago the president saying they were talking with north korea. sources tell fox news the house was already planning actually to hold a hearing in early february to address emergency alert systems. now sources say what happened in hawaii will be part of the discussion. when asked if it's true that

the trump administration has not conducted a full-scale exercise for this type of event, dhs secretary kiersten nielsen said they operate under the national response framework and had an exercise with deputy secretaries of the department, specifically related to this type of threat. she said there were plans for a cabinet level exercise in february. rick? rick: ellison bash or this remarkable story. thank you. let's bring back morgan, reporter from the hill. senator cotton said what happened in hawaii could be a game-changer on missile defense? >> absolutely. i think that this is a very, you know, illuminating issue, particularly because it does shine the light on the threat from north korea and what we need to do to respond and to prepare, i think, it's not only about these state alert systems, it's about missile defense. it's about broader issues with regards to tampering down

. rick: breaking now, passengers evacuated from a plane at jfk airport in new york city. port authority police say delta flight 2164 was cleared of passengers because of a smoke condition on the plane. there are no reported injuries at this time and a source tells fox the smoke dissipated by the time firefighters arrived on-scene. we'll bring you updates if necessary. also breaking, a casino boat erupts in flames off of florida's gulf coast. local police north of tampa say this vessel caught fire offshore with 50 people on board. as you can see the boat appears to have been completely engulfed in flames. police say everyone made it safely ashore without any life-threatening injuries. no word on what caused the fire or how all the people got back to shore, and we'll give you upgates as we get them. and this fox weather alert, as millions of people are

bracing for another far-reaching storm expected to bring more ice and snow and frigid temperatures. the latest blast of winter days after another storm sent cars and trucks spinning off of highways and closed interstates. so many accidents in tennessee, the national guard was called out with humvees and a recker to clear a 12-mile stretch of highway. now preparing for round two. let's go to meteorologist adam klotz in the fox extreme weather center to find out how bad this is going to be. >> hi there, rick, we're seeing the weather, temperatures in place, cold numbers across the eastern half of the country and settling far south. 30 degrees in memphis. we've got moisture heading that way, that is causing slippery conditions already. you see the snowstorm falling, we've seen watches and warnings stretching to the south but running through memphis in a larger area moving into chicago. moving into indiana, all areas that are beginning to battle

some of these snowy conditions. with all of this, a large area with winter storm advisory from texas where you are likely to see ice but running up to the north where widespread snow is going to run from the ohio river valley stretching back towards kansas city. that's what we're seeing currently and coming with another round of very cold air along this frontal boundary, pay attention to where the snow is and look back behind tucker the numbers drop quickly. this is a true arctic blast, falling into the negatives with windchills negative 10 to 12 degrees. as you head towards tomorrow. this is going to be a real arctic blast that's going to shoot into the midwest making high temperatures into single digits, so forecasted highs for teenagers you see where it begins to settle. in plenty of cold spots in the northern plains. take interview tuesday, rick, you see this, it is widespread once again. it has been very cold. it's going to continue to be very cold for the next couple of days.
