thousands securing for shelter on saturday morning. heather: the emergency alert that went out to people that said that there is no missile threat or danger to the state of hawaii, repeat, false alarm and then we have this comment that came from sarah sanders who called out that article in politico, she went further saying, general kelly, general mattis, general mcmaster, general kellogg, some of the greatest military leaders of generation are fresh faces, doubt isis would agree. in fact, you had a lengthy conversation just recently with the president's national security strategy last month with general mcmaster, right? >> i did, heavier. before president trump announced national security strategy i was engaged with hr macmaster in a private conversation before the strategy came out and i can tell you, i've known general mcmaster for a while, he is exceptional and he oversees the national

security apparatus overseeing the cries cities management having situation involving the national security issue exceptional and also what's exceptional, the professionals overseas the white house and situation room and so forth, so you mentioned those five senior leaders who are retired, active duty or retired lieutenant officers at the top of the conversation, that's a very deep bench. let me add one more that's our new secretary of homeland security kirstjen nielsen we have a very deep bench and the american people should be confidence, cabinet level but also these extraordinary professionals overseas, they are very good and like i said, it's a very deep bench. heather: as we continue to talk about that let's bring up for people at home so they can specifically see what we are talking about in terms of their

background, let's start with general john kelly specifically, he's a retired four-star general, more than 40 years of the marines, three tours in iraq and then you general mattis, four-star marine corps general, served 44 years in the military, led the central command from 2013 to 2014 rand then you were speaking about general mcmaster, his background, west point graduate, three-star general, ph.d military history, considered one of the army's top intellectuals and then finally we can go onto general kellogg, three-star general, 36 years in the military, two tours during the vietnam war, number of medals including the silver star and major general, deputy commander, served as engineer officer in the army, so my question to you is, why in the world would politico put out this type of thought that they're not prepared and that they are fresh faces? >> i don't know and if there's some political agenda, that's

their perspective but it really doesn't serve our national security interest well in my opinion, let me leave you with this, i believe that first off, they'll be a number of lessons learned and take away that is we can garner from this exercise that occurred on saturday and blunder, if you will, secondly, i can assure you that chief of staff john kelly will rally cabinet officials, if you will, the principals and deputies and will put them through their paces, if you will, through a number of exercises for the rest of the calendar year and, third, and secretary nielsen said we need to do what the american people, pay attention to alerts, again, not likely to happen but, again, if there is an alert of this nature, the american people need to respond and -- and pay taxi to what's happening around us. >> well, lieutenant general newton, thank you so much for joining us this morning and we will listen to your assurances, we appreciate it this morning. thank you.

caucus, keith ellison made it clear, there's no free thoughts, no free will, you better fall in line with party bosses or they will cut off fundraising to you and not support you, that's the message he sends, what's so ironic, heather, back when democrats controlled u.s. senate with 54 votes five years ago they fully supported a merit-based system, they passed a bill, all 54 democrats of whom 39 are still in the senate today, they passed a merit-base bill that ended visa lottery system that supported more border security, this is -- pure politics, they don't want a daca deal, they refuse -- we can clearly see what they are up to. heather: let me get kathy toness that, that's true, why vote for it under the obama administration but not vote for it under the trump administration? >> well, i mean, right now it is bipartisan, the republicans and the democrats do want the dreamers, they do want the daca deal. heather: in terms of chain migration and visa lottery

nielsen at dhs tell us what she does want us to do if anything like this occurs and have fema review that for all 50 states. i would like to see the pentagon give us a rundown on what we do and don't have for missile defense because hawaii is well defended, we do have missile defenses and it's trump who put us on the right course to containing north korea's nuclear capabilities. heather: we have south korea and north korea actually in discussions at this point. we reported earlier they were talking about having a joint hockey team, so it really is remarkable if you think about what's happening between those two countries specifically right now. let's talk a little bit more about the war on terror and the successes with isis and i want your comments on this, saw isis lose almost all territory under administration so far, announced new afghanistan strategy, pushing nato to push for war in afghanistan, what about successes in terms of the war on

terror? >> president trump has a series of important wins really showing persistence in foreign policy by delegating authority down to commanders at the pentagon, he led our troops assist our allies more closely, that accelerated and pushed forward the rolling up of isis out of territory and iraq and syria, now trump has taken this tactic into his new strategy for afghanistan, they increased air strikes in afghanistan by 300% last year and he's trying the same tactic that is worked in mosul, in raqqah to put pressure on the taliban and carry out attacks that target taliban and other fighters revenue as well as healthy afghan forces take control over the country. wig bin in afghanistan against terrorism. heather: but we don't hear about it. some other things we don't hear about, foreign policy wins specifically he's worked to increase defense spending, he's

empowered military leader, reduced the need on white house to sign off on every single mission. he ordered new sanctions on venezuela and approved the new iran strategy and also ordered missile strikes against syrian air base, your thoughts on all of that in. >> let's talk about the syrian air base, appropriate and measured and conservative, it tells how trump knows how the wheel u.s. military power appropriately. on top of that, he did improve increase in defense budget focusing on readiness and on some of the service top priorities, i like that he urged congress $4 billion of missile defense that would stock up interceptors, new improvements and allow them to do testing as well. he's got the military on course to be a stronger military going forward. heather: all right, dr. grant, thank you so much for joining us, we appreciate your insight
