approach to this gun violence issue and guns aren't the only problem. we do have to invest more in mental health. we have to strengthen the background check system so those who do have mental health disorders are accurately reported to the nix system and can't gain access to these types of weapons. i hope republican leadership and the president get behind some simple solutions that can help make all americans safer. >> john roberts is live with this story. >> good morning to you. the president on friday night saw first responders in broward county when he went to florida for the weekend. now that the president is back in washington after the long weekend he will be focused on the school shootings and got a couple of listening sessions that are in the works here at the white house tomorrow he plans on having students and teachers in to talk about what can be done about school shootings. the white house hopes to have some students from marjory stoneman douglas here at the white house but trying to put

together the logistics of that. don't know if they can do that. the president hosting a listening session on thursday with state and local officials to see what else can be done to prevent these school shootings. the president was critical of the f.b.i. over the weekend in a tweet saying very sad that the f.b.i. missed all of the many signals sent out by the florida school shooter. it is not acceptable. they're spending too much time trying to prove russian collusion with the trump campaign. no collusion, get back to the basics and make us all proud. the president took heat about that. white house officials say the president wants to know if more could have been done to stop it. >> you had a scenario in which you have a troubled individual who has been widely identified by local law enforcement, other students in the school had identified him and flagged him, his own aunt had called the f.b.i. about his conduct. and the dangers that he posed. yet nothing was done. so we want to understand what was the breakdown in our

systems. >> another development this morning in the russia investigation. special counsel robert mueller has charged alex van der zwaan with making false statements related to the probe into paul manafort and rick gates. he is probably someone you have never heard of. he was an attorney in london and has connection to russian oligarchs. he made false statements about the last time he spoke with rick gates about work his firm was doing with the ukraine ministry of justice and after a weekend tweet storm the president took aim at everyone from the f.b.i. to h.r. mcmaster to adam schiff to oprah. the president now zeroing in on president quoting obama as down playing russian meddling in the 2016 election. the tweet reads, quote, there is no serious person out there who would suggest somehow you could rig america's elections. there is no evidence that has

happened in the past or that it will happen this time. i would invite mr. trump to stop whining and make his case to get votes. president obama just before the election because he thought crooked hillary was going to win and he didn't want to rock the boat. when i easily won the electoral college the game changed and the russian excuse became the narrative of the democrats. the president also defending his approach to russia since taking office tweeting, quote, i have been much tougher on russia than obama. just look at the facts. total fake news. molly. >> john roberts covering a lot of ground for us as always. thank you. >> jon: let's dial more deeply into some of these issues with deputy white house press secretary hogan gidley. the president has indicated he is open to stricter gun laws. what specifically is he advocating? >> a conversation right now about how we can get things

accomplished to prevent these type of horrific acts. look, one of the things we always hear is see something, say something. in this particular instance and those in the past people saw something, people said something but nobody did anything. we have to have a better system of communicating red flags across law enforcement and across the background check system so these types of people with mental illnesses, with evil in their heart cannot get weapons. >> jon: the accused gunman in this case had been in touch with or seen by mental health officials in florida. yet he was able to buy seven rifles. how does that happen? >> no question there was a systematic failure at the f.b.i. they were alerted about this individual. people knew of this individual. something like 30 visits from local law enforcement to this shooter's home. nobody did anything. that's the issue here. time for talk is over. we have to get things in place to protect the american people and this president wants to do just that.
8:06 am
>> jon: you just heard chris -- criticism when he sent out the tweet that the f.b.i. was too busy investigating russia collusion rather than nikolas cruz. does he believe the f.b.i. would have gotten this guy were it not for the russian case? >> it's obvious the f.b.i. messed up. director wray took responsibility for that. it's unacceptable when you look at all the information they had on this particular shooter. this is a horrific act of violence and grotesque and this person is pure evil. the f.b.i. at some levels knew it but for whatever reason it didn't make it up the chain of command for somebody to do something. the president wants a change to figure out how we can get these measures in place to prevent these types of actions from occurring in the future. >> jon: on the russia investigation the president is

8:08 am
what we try to accomplish here in free and fair elections. russia tried to play a massive role in that. this president has been clear in making sure that russia paid the price for past actions and for this action. it started in 2014 under president barack obama. clearly they knew about it. i'm not exactly sure what was done. for this president, he has seen quite a few things here in washington, d.c. that haven't been addressed or touched for the better part of 10, 20, 30 years and coming in and trying to make changes. this president armed ukraine with offensive weapons to go against what russia wanted. we opened up drilling to try to bring down oil prices against what russia wanted and we attacked syria against what russia wanted. this president has been clear about his stance on russia. but what we will not say and we will not get ahead of this president refuses to telegraph what he will do on the national stage. he wants this type of action from russia to be stopped. he made it clear in his statement last week.

federal background check system. how far is he willing to go on gun control? joining us now is a white house correspondent for the daily caller. thank you for joining us. to kick things off, it is not exactly clear. we know that the statement has come forward from the white house from sarah sanders that he is willing to be supportive of efforts to improve the federal background check system. beyond that we have very little insight into what the president might be willing to do. as a businessman some years ago he expressed a little more support for gun control laws even writing in 2000 that he supports a ban on assault weapons and also supports a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun. that was prior to the expiration in 2000 4. he was avidly in support of the second amendment. some insight here. what might the president be planning? could he be the one willing to reach across the aisle? >> i think that the president
8:17 am
has heard these calls and that the farthest he is willing to go is a realistic solution and the white house expressioned interest in. the fix nix act. it's important to understand with many of these mass shootings if the laws on the books had been implemented many of them simply would not have happened in the first place. the fix nix act has the support of the nra, a bipartisan bill. it sounds like the white house is going to be making a push behind it. what it does is offers incentives to the different federal government agencies in order to properly implement the laws on the books in order to put criminal information into that database. in terms of gun control itself, that is not something that it sounds like this white house is going to support. it is not realistically something that is going to pass through both houses of congress. school safety is going to be a top priority for this administration in the coming
8:18 am
months and they will focus on realistic and implementable solutions. >> molly: finding common ground that can be so difficult. democrats said they would like to see things go farther than just revamping the federal background system or a fix as you might say. meanwhile some of these students have come forward in recent days. students lying in front of the white house calling for presidential action. i guess the big question is where is the common ground? not only fighting it in congress but something the president is willing to sign onto? >> the president i think will be hearing those calls very, very loud and clear when he holds a listening session on wednesday with teachers and students. and the thing is here they're looking to the common ground that has already been found. this bill has bipartisan support. whether we see the president push for some sort of gun restriction is probably very unlikely. apparently and reports indicate he was discussing some of this while he was down in mar-a-lago
8:19 am
this weekend and quizzing guests on what type of gun control could realistically be accepted by some of his voters? as you said, this president is unpredictable. if there was anybody who could forge a bipartisan solution on gun control it's probably him but extremely unlikely from what i'm hearing from this white house. >> molly: when you talk about listening sessions, a number of the survivors from the recent shooting in florida spoke on fox news sunday. one said they're organizing a march ultimately so students can beg for our lives and they've asked the adults to rise above politics regardless of party. is this the turning point? are these teenagers that have come forward to eloquently do they mark the turningpoint? >> it is possible. i think the fact that white house is even making this push at this time is really because of these students and because of this shooting. now, you know, in terms of what they want and what it really means to save lives, i think they will look at this and say
8:20 am
the texas, sutherland springs shooting could have been stopped if the air force had properly input its information into the background check system. this particular shooting probably could have been stopped if the f.b.i. had followed up on its tips. so they are going to look at this and say we care about your lives and we are going to do everything that is possible to enforce the laws on the books which could have stopped these shootings and try and save children's lives. >> molly: we appreciate it. so fraught and so emotional but such an important issue. thank you for offering your insight. >> thanks for having me. >> jon: the f.b.i. joins a sweeping search for a missing 5-year-old. what we're learning as the investigation enters its third day. president trump is throwing his support behind mitt romney who is now running for the senate in utah. karl rove weighs in on this surprise next. i don't know why i didn't get screened a long time ago.

>> molly: right now the f.b.i. is on the case as the search for a missing 5-year-old kansas boy enters its third day. lucas hernandez was last seen in his home on saturday. his stepmother telling police she saw him in his room before going to take a nap. when she woke up the child was gone. officers are combing the area. police don't believe the boy was abducted. >> jon: a surprising endorsement by president trump who is now supporting mitt romney in his senate bid in utah. the former massachusetts governor has been a frequent and harsh critic of mr. trump. you wouldn't know it from the president's tweet saying mitt romney has announced he is running for the senate from the wonderful state of utah. he will make a great senator
8:25 am
and worthy successor to orrin hatch. he has my full endorsement. romney replied: will this last? let's bring in karl rove. you know, karl, politics can make strange bed fellows. what is it about mitt romney and president trump? is it all brotherly love between them now? >> well, i wouldn't go that far. both of the men got something out of this exchange. president trump looked big and presidential. i suspect he also did something that orrin hatch wanted him to do, to endorse mitt romney. and mitt romney got a chance to say thank you, mr. president and then immediately you'll notice in his tweet immediately
8:26 am
turned the focus back to utah. he said i hope to earn the support of the people of utah. mitt romney in his initial stage of the campaign completely focused on now i'll be a senator and do big things. i'm going to go to washington and represent the people of utah. he went to school there, he has had longstanding ties there, family members are there. he has lived there the last several years. he was deeply involved in rescuing the winter olympics in utah in 2002 but he is very careful to make certain that people in utah recognize that he knows he got to earn their respect and support in shoe leather door-to-door, person to person, meeting to meeting and not be a big dog, the former governor of massachusetts and former presidential candidate. >> jon: mitt romney was calling donald trump a phony and fraud in 2016. in return president trump said
8:27 am
romney had no guts and choked as a candidate. that's quite a turnaround from two years ago, karl. >> they probably believe some of those things in their heart of hearts but in politics, you know, you are on a team and you try to be a team member and both of them are trying to be good team members by letting the past be the past and let bygones be bygones and move forward. mitt romney doesn't want to go to washington and become sort of the anti-trump or the foil trump in the senate. he wants to get constructive things done. where he agrees with the president they'll work together. when he disagrees i'm sure it will be done in a respectful manner. >> jon: his opponent is accusing him of being a carpet bagger, moving into utah to run to try to win the seat. can he win there? >> the polls show him winning 3-1. i went to high school in utah
8:28 am
and a couple of years of college. i was there a short time ago. if my high school friends with whom i had dinner are any indication, mitt romney is on his way to the u.s. senate. they like him and admire him. he is obviously lds and a lot of people in utah are mormons. he went to byu. i went to the university of utah. there is a little conflict there red versus blue but he is beloved in utah and thought of quite fondly. ran in the republican primary in 2016 and won and is still very much liked today. the democrats are going to have no chance of beating mitt romney in utah. if i have to forecast one thing for this fall and be judged on it mitt romney will be the new junior senator from the state of utah come election day this fall by a healthy margin. >> jon: it doesn't hurt he is the guy who turned around the salt lake city olympics.
8:29 am
>> look, he did so by involving the community. this wasn't the guy coming in from outside saying you guys have all messed it up, let me tell you what to do. we're all in this together and we'll fix this together and he mobilized the community and leadership of utah, turned it around and people understand that those olympics helped take utah from one level not just to the next level but to the level beyond that and so they appreciate what he has done to help the state grow in that way. >> jon: we'll be watching in november and watch to see if the love fest between mitt romney and president trump continues all the way until then. karl rove joining us from austin today. thank you. >> molly: new details about the accused florida shooter's obsession with firearms and what students at the school are now doing to get congress to act. right now washington is in the middle of a back and forth debate about immigration. will they get a deal by the president's deadline? what speaker paul ryan is pushing for. >> the president took a stand

8:37 am
tim kessler, a co-founder of third way. thank you, gentlemen, for joining us today. so often things don't get done in washington because it's unclear what a path forward would be. in this case at least there are terms on the table. there is the wall, chain migration, ending the visa lottery system as a trade from the white house for daca, potentially for dreamers and yet the compromise seems to just not be found. they seem on the cusp of it. it seems like the white house became the final obstacle sweeping through and close to getting the wall. the wall the supporters were chanting about on the campaign trail. what gives here, jim, what's next? >> i'm not sure the president really wants a deal. that's the problem here. that's his right as president. but, you know, he came very close to a deal with schumer and nancy and schumer and graham and schumer and mccain and then durbin and graham and

he backed away kind of like a runaway bride and put up his own principles which were -- they're principles that are nice but now how you get a deal. then he torpedoed the only bipartisan bill out there. we're in a cul de sac. there are paths forward but the president has to be part of that path. he can't be a resisting force is any view. >> molly: dan, there have been accusations the president has been greedy on this front. is he just a fabulous negotiator. will we get somewhere and not by the beginning of march as he had hoped but potentially by the end? >> i think the president needs to turn up the heat. maybe turn up the tweets. maybe even address from the oval office and remind the public the problem is not daca as the democrats have framed it. the problem is a broken immigration system and an open border that has dire and significant consequences to american citizens. we have a culture of selective
8:39 am
law enforcement. we have sanctuary cities, we have a wave of crime associated with a group of people who have migrated on their own initiative rather than selected by the united states government for inclusion in our society. that's the problem. when he takes it back to the american people they'll respond as they did in the election. i think the gop establishment and democrats would be wise to heed the message. >> molly: dan brings up a good point. potentially the white house was talking about offering further protections to american citizens and making it part of the compromise. where is the compromise? >> jeff flake offered something, three years of daca relief for three years of wall funding. that should be enough. you know, if you want to go larger and deal with diversity visas and other things you have to go larger on the other side what you'll do with the remaining 11 million that are here. there is this myth being perpetrated that we have open borders. we do not.
8:40 am
there are guards and fencing at the borders and this myth also that immigrants are the cause of our crime problem in this country. they're a cause of a small amount. >> how do you explain the sanctuary cities? >> if you ask me a question i'm happy to answer it. sanctuary cities are basically cities that are following the law, due process for civil procedure saying we'll hold people here. if the federal government after we hold them wants to take them they should take them but we open ourselves up to lawsuits by keeping people after their sentence is done. that's the fourth amendment has said it's not constitutional. they're acting like constitutional actors here and, you know, conservatives have said that they are breaking the law. they are not breaking the law. these cities are abiding by the law and by the constitution. if you want to do something and try to make some changes to what cities can do with illegal immigrants after their sentence is served for a civil
8:41 am

8:42 am
another small bite towards, you know, nothing. they really need to deal with border security. we need to deal with the society based on a rule of law, not selective enforcement. sanctuary cities create a present danger to american citizens. we saw that with the kate steinle catastrophe and other instances. this has to stop. i think the democrats need to get the message of the 2016 election and trump needs to give it to them. >> molly: dan and jim. thank you for joining us here today on this debate that goes on. we appreciate it. >> jon: a key battleground state just got a new congressional district map. what does it mean for the mid-term elections? we're live with more on the pennsylvania situation. plus a missing lift driver just found. where he was and why his friends are still concerned. >> we are keeping our prayers up and, you know, hoping for the best.
