yu mp,oney. in fact, drivers who switched from geico to esurance saved hundreds. that's auto and home insurance for the modern world. esurance. an allstate company. click or call. neil: all right. welcome back, the president in florida today at this hour he's looking at a pretty busy schedule not withstanding the very latest with many multiple storms we have been keeping track of including the political variety over trade, over investigations, over everything. what do we have going on there today? >> right, a whole lot of different things. the president is only in florida for a fairly quick trip. he's leaving a little later this afternoon. he's only been here for about 24 hours last night. last night he had dinner with rnc donors. after that he will head to press-type dinner that he will
8:01 am
attend later on. twitter, president trump is doubling down on those tariff proposals that you mentioned which are, of course, controversial and not by a lot of world leaders, trade wars, president trump did, he tweeted that trade wars are easy to win and will sign something next week and will likely raise aluminum tariffs to 10% and steel to 25%. president trump advocated for something like this, leaders in european union are threat tong retaliating against american goods. members are criticizing the president's idea. >> he's had very bad advice by somebody down there. i hope the president doesn't really do this, because if he does it's going to be a huge tax on american citizens and --
8:02 am
>> former trump adviser carl icahn subject, sold steel before president trump announced plans for steel and aluminum tariffs, icahn had not actively traded the stocks since january of 2015, weave reached out to the white house about that report, so far, neil, we haven't heard back. neil: ellison, thank you very much, devin nunes is asking the justice department to investigate fisa court application that ultimately approved wiretapping to carter page, you know that by now, with that house committee chairman representative devin nunes, congressman, thank you for taking the time. where does this stand right now, the back and forth over who knew what and when as you know the president has serious concerns about the idea of being fair
8:03 am
arbitrator, what do you think about that? >> we continue to plot along and do our job under unsurmountable pressure from all sides, we have a a media that refuses to cover the issue at all. we have serious abuses that occurred in the fisa court against trump campaign. we will bring those back forward as we see them and what i sent out a couple of days ago was a letter to attorney general jeff sessions and harowitz, the ig, where we are on the investigation and what they should be looking at as far as fisa abuse. i was taxpayer to see attorney general jeff sessions appoint harowitz because we welcome more people investigating the serious issues. neil: you don't agree with the president that he's not happy that he appointed mr. harowitz. that's the inspector general? >> look, i welcome anybody to come help investigation because
8:04 am
so far it's only the house intelligence committee republicans who are actually doing anything to get to the bottom of who was colluding with russia. the more we peel this back, we have clear evidence of collusion it's not between trump campaign, it's between the democratic party, hillary clinton campaign and russians. neil: now they turned the thing on you, congressman, saying that you're quite a leaker, this campaign for accountability saying that you should be looked at for leaking information without consequence time and again representative nunes leaked information, what will it take for the house to stop abuse and reported text that dr. warner's office and that you were the culprit, what do you say? >> this is what they tried about eight or nine months ago. they continue today file the phoney ethics charges, these are all left-wing groups. what's happening is every
8:05 am
left-wing group in america know that is we have caught the democratic party in the hillary clinton red handed and it appears that they weponized the intelligence agencies if you really look at what's happened here. there's been a character assassination of anyone who gets up and tries to get to the truth, so i don't pay attention to what the left-wing groups do. i've been looked at and looked at and looked at by the mainstream media, they refuse to actually even cover this -- this issue. neil: you're saying that you never leaked anything? >> it's laughable, neil, there are daily leaks that are occurring where we know the democrats have done it. neil: i know that, i just want to be clear, when you say it's laughable, laughable that you would leak anything, righting? >> right, it's laughable that we leaked anything when there's daily leaks that come out. neil: all right. >> and so this is ridiculous.
8:06 am
neil: okay. the jeff sessions moves appointing the inspector general to look into all of the fisa application controversy, it was the latest thing that prompted the president to tweet his concerns and opportunity to criticize his attorney general yet again and i'm wondering whether you believe that jeff sessions is up to the task, the president clearly seems to be -- he's not to you? >> it's not my job to ascertain what the attorney general should or should not be doing. we are running our own investigation in the house, i'm happy that attorney general jeff sessions appointed harowitz to look at fisa abuissments this is the first step we have, so we welcome everybody to the party to try to get to the truth, i'm pleased, though, that we are moving forward with the ig and we will work with the ig and we will work with whoever else
8:07 am
wants to help us get to the bottom of this. neil: you mentioned that you don't believe that the media presents a fair case of this, maybe an indication of that was the fact that you recently late-night comment jokes particularly stephen colbert making you the bud of some jokes, let's take a listen to this and see your reaction. >> can you read what's on the memo, investigation update, devin nunes is a -- redacted. >> we don't know, we are not allowed to release that information. >> that's classified. >> cbs won't let me say this on air, i think this should be released. >> devin nunes is a -- >> could be anything. we don't know. do you have any guesses what it might say underneath there? >> californian, public servant. >> former dairy farmer. >> former dairy farmer. >> yeah. >> because he seems to be milking it right now.
8:08 am
neil: what did you think of that? did colbert make any effort to you to talk to you? >> yeah, well, i think this is the danger that we have in this country, this is an example of it. the last -- left controls not only the university in the country but also control hollywood in this country and e mainstream media, so it is conservatives in this country are under attack and, i think, this is a great example of it, so i hope that they can't to do it because on one hand you'll see these -- you'll see the left and the media running out there saying, oh, my gosh, it's the end of the war, the russians attacked our democracy and we have evidence of collusion between the trump campaign and the russians, however, they can't show it, they have no proof, when we present them and the american people with clear proof that not only the democratic party collude and get information from the russians and investigation was opened in trump campaign to spy on the
8:09 am
trump campaign is cricket and they resort to going to friends in hollywood to make fun of people and attack people who are trying to get to the truth, so i enjoy the attacks, if they want to continue to attack me, that's fine. neil: you enjoy what colbert is doing? staff tried out to reach you to have you on? >> i have no idea. not that i know of but i wouldn't -- i don't know. neil: so when you get -- >> possible. neil: back and forth with the president, you're doing the president's bidding, is that fair, is that right, what do you think? >> i don't know. we are not -- we don't get any orders from the white house. we don't get any orders from anybody else. we do our job and follow the facts where they lead and every step that we take, we uncover more and more information, if it wasn't for what we have done, no one would know that that dossier that was used by the fbi and bragged about by multiple intelligence agencies and leaked
8:10 am
to the press and talked about by all of the fleses the country including even fox, nobody would know if it wasn't for the work that we've done on our committee that the republicans did with opposition from the democrats that fusion gps was being paid by the hillary clinton campaign and the democratic party to dig up this dirt which was phoney dirt to use against the president of the united states. so we continue to uncover facts while the rest of the people continue to -- which is totally fine and we continue work. neil: chairman, thank you very much. >> thank you, neil. neil: we did reach out to congressman jeff's office and they have not gotten back. employee at dick sporting goods quit after raising age to buy gun at 21. he wrote a letter, still going viral, he's here.
8:11 am

8:14 am
neil: all right, we are finding out new details of florida shooting almost every day. new accusations police were told that very day to form a perimeter outside of the parkland school building. broward county sheriff wants to know a little bit more about this as transparency that's being investigated into in response to this shooting in broward county, sheriff joins us right now. >> good morning. neil: thank you for taking the time, do we know how many deputies or local law enforcement personnel opted to wait outside, were told to wait outside. i know about the one deputy assigned in the school who was outside anyway for whatever reason. what about the additional law enforcement personnel? were they told to stay outside? >> well, neil, we don't have that information right now for the total number of deputies who tid or did not respond into the school and that's why we are
8:15 am
demanding transparency from this administration and the sheriff himself, we are taking a beating out in the public right now and the more rand more time that goes by with us not being transparent, we are losing the trust of public and citizens that we are trying to protect. we need to be forth coming with the public, if we did something wrong, fine, let's learn from it and move forward. we have to get the trust back from the citizens so we can do our job and successfully get back to protecting the citizens. neil: sheriff, we did reach out to scott israel on this, we have not heard back, many people saying that he should step down, the controversy alone and what he knew and didn't know indicates lacks of, you know, overseeing, what do you think? >> i think right now from the union standpoint it's premature for us to make a decision or comment onto that because we are ourselves, we don't know the facts so i'm not going to make a decision to either support or not support that the citizens or
8:16 am
governor take. neil: whatever comes of this investigation, you have a school shooting, then brought to the scene, women as well and your eyes are brought to the scene, what's the first thing you do? >> our policy is that you may enter a building on a blanket policy, may, there could be some circumstances that would prevent you from going in, however, we are trained in our active shooter classes to go, go, go neutralize the threat as soon as possible. if your backup is six or seven minutes away and you're by yourself, you have to make the choice to go in by yourself. neil: sheriff, we are hearing from deputy scott peterson, his lawyer, the deputy assigned to the school, the armed deputy signed to the school that he was outside because he thought the shots were coming from outside, did that make sense to you, is
8:17 am
that possible? >> well, in the beginning the first couple of gunshot that is you will hear, you will have to adjust and figure out where they're coming from, the first two or three rounds, after 90, 110 rounds, you have to know where they're coming from. neil: part of the plan to have armed deputy or someone similar for every one thousand students at schools across the state, do you support that? >> i do support that, some of our schools are more violent than others but we have to get the proper training to support the deputies that are behind it and i said it over and over again with the transparency of the department here that we are auditing books because we don't believe the budget that they show us, 887 million-dollar revised budget last year in county and we don't have our own gun range to properly train deputies. it's not acceptable. it's not just this sheriff's
8:18 am
county but previous. we have land that we can do that with but they don't want to turn it over to us. neil: arming teachers, the president thinks it's a good idea, what do you think? >> with the proper amount of training and identifying specifics, teachers that are responsible enough and willing to take on that cause, i fully support him on that but there has to be an informed debate about this to come up with best plan, we need can a knee-jerk reaction and put the guns in school next week. we have to think of all possibilities, in urban school setting where we have kids breaking into school at nighttime and in rural school we don't have that problem, we have to have plan in action and not just one size school fits all. neil: what do you think of raising the age to purchase a gun, 18 to 21? >> it's not going to solve the problem because until we address the real issue which is mental health status of an individual being linked with the criminal background check, it doesn't
8:19 am
matter if your raise the age 18 to 21 to 30. somebody who has that determination to carry out a threat like this, they are going to find a way whether they have to do a criminal action and steal somebody's gun or go to a store and purchase one, so i think the knee-jerk reaction and that's one of the many things here, the political posturing and pointing that this is has become a gun debate and it's not about a gun debate down here, it's about the individual behind the gun that we have to address and the programs that we've enacted down in broward county, the promise program where we allow kids to commit criminal and we are not allowed to make arrest. all discretion has been made to officer on scene based on totality of circumstances, the attitude of the individual and the familiarity of the person at the dwelling. we have to get that put back in place to make that promise
8:20 am
program to be somewhat successful. neil: sheriff, thank you for making the time. deputy for broward county. thank you. someone who works at dick sporting goods which raises the age, that's exactly what employee at sporting goods thought, he thought it was bad idea and quit oooooohhh! you stopped! you're gonna leave me back here at year 9? how did this happen? it turned out, a lot of people fell short, of even the average length of retirement. we have to think about not when we expect to live to, but when we could live to. let's plan for income that lasts all our years in retirement. prudential. bring your challenges.

you know what's not awesome? gig-speed internet. when only certain people can get it. let's fix that. let's give this guy gig- really? and these kids, and these guys, him, ah. oh hello. that lady, these houses! yes, yes and yes. and don't forget about them. uh huh, sure. still yes! xfinity delivers gig speed to more homes than anyone. now you can get it, too. welcome to the party. neil: who needs washington if private companies are going to take matters into their own hands with regards to gun control, molly with the latest on what corporate america is doing to address some of the controversies, hey, molly. >> some companies are changing the way they do business and employees are having a say too,
8:24 am
dick's sporting goods announced this week that they will stop selling ar-15 rifles and will raise age to buy gun to 21. some employees are not pleased that dick's and field and stream are getting into the politics business when it comes to second amendment, one of them a 20-year-old hunter says he can no longer buy a gun at counter where he's a salesman and posted letter of resignation, i cannot be the face of these new gun policies in effect, i find them morally and constitutionally wrong. i refuse to be part of a corporation with these liberal policies. wal-mart and kroger also have said they will require customers to be 21 before they can buy a gun, neil. neil: another one of those workers who had serious concerns about this was alexander working or was working at dick's sporting goods, i'm 20-year-old and therefore barred from
8:25 am
purchasing a firearm dick's sporting goods, my coworkers and managers were always highest standing and quality, i have no complaints of ethical moral standing, it's unfortunate the ceo edward decided to alienate and for that i will resign. alexander is here, welcome. >> hi, thank you for having me on. neil: what reaction did you get? >> the reaction in the store was positive. the management and everybody there was very understanding and i was standing up for my rights. neil: did they know -- you were doing specifically on the age thing, everything else with the company was fine, what they teach, their values, ethics, all of that was fine? >> yeah, i have no issues with the company or with my store specific until edward came out with the absolutely arbitrary and insane rules, i had no issue
8:26 am
before that. neil: now, we have crazy gun laws across the country in different areas, of course, you have to be 21 to get a gun n others -- in others 18. the stores that are doing this, dick's sporting goods, wal-mart and others we are going to adhere to a policy that keeps consistent at 21. you say that's wrong, why? >> well, federally, you know, i can purchase a long gun, a rifle or shotgun at the age of 18 and i believe that by dick's sporting goods and other stores changings the age to 21 they are discriminating against certain class of individuals. they are just discriminating by our age, no other reason. neil: they seem to be saying the younger you are the gun purchaser the more dangerous you are, what do you think of that? >> i don't believe that whatsoever. it doesn't matter if you're 18
8:27 am
or, you know, 35, you know, like responsibility is the main thing. we really need to get back to teaching individual's gun ownership and taking responsibility for own actions. neil: and that in your mind has nothing to do with your stage in. >> not at all. neil: nicholas cruz that got gun, what do you think of that? >> what do i think of purchasing at 19? neil niel he got a number of guns and a lot of the guns -- he got multiple guns and mental health issues didn't come to light until after the fact, what do you think of that? >> yeah, i think the real issue here is that we need to get back to talking about mental health and reducing the stigmatism that's around it. we need to look out for one
8:28 am
another and not pass more regulations, we need to get back to being people and get to know one another. neil: so when you hear, i don't know if you caught any of the white house meet thción week where they are trying to come up with acceptable middle ground and it covers raising the age or making it harder to get a gun or tightening background checks, what have you heard that you welcomed and liked versus those things like this raising the age to get a gun that you did not? >> i strongly believe that any regulation against the second amend is wrong and infringes upon the rights of individuals. like i said before, if we put more money into health, education and health, i think that's down the right path, though. neil: so when you hear that many, for example, nra are concerned about -- the stricter background checks that go too
8:29 am
far are intrusive, what do you feel about that? >> right now with current background check, we need to fix the loopholes in it. we need to make sure that states and counties are reporting what they need to report. we don't need to change the system, we need to audit what we currently have. neil: what do you think of gun-free zones, alex. the president said that they put the good guys at disadvantage and the bad guys know it? >> i agree. gun-free zones are ridiculous because criminals don't abide by laws. neil: we have statement from dick's sporting goods of our letter, we support and respect the second amendment and we recognize an appreciate that the vast majority of gun owners in this country are responsible law abiding citizens but we have to help solve problem that's in front of us. what did you think of that? >> what they are doing is not solving the problem, it's not
8:30 am
creating, you know, any ve solution. we need to talk about what the real root of this is and start teaching personal responsibility and taking responsibility for your actions. neil: i misspoke, that was dick's sporting goods explaining its decision to raise the age not just exclusively in response to your letter, had you heard from many -- any higher-ups right now? >> i have not heard from anyone right now. i really like to thank them for all of the support, without the support of the second amendment institute, i don't think i would be able to do what i'm doing right now. neil: alexander, i wish you well, i think you're wise for your years, whether people agree or disre w
