tv Fox Report Saturday FOX News March 3, 2018 4:00pm-5:00pm PST
4:00 pm
that doesn't press. will be back with you tomorrow at 12 and 4:00 p.m. easter. have a great evening. >> present trump facing blowback with those so-called train war. the president said there's nothing to fear. this is the fox report. >> julie: partners are now warning that they could retaliate after trump announced plans to oppose sweeping tariffs on aluminum and steel. he vowed to pass the latter at 25%. trump tweeted earlier, if the e.u. wants to further increase their already massive tariffs and barriers on u.s. companies doing business, we will apply
4:01 pm
attacks on your cars which come into the u.s. they make it impossible for cars and more to sell their. big trade imbalance! republicans are voicing concerns that this could be a major blow to the u.s. economy. >> many republicans on capitol hill who have championed free trade are not in favor of these tariffs. john cornyn has said that trade wars may be necessary sometimes but they're hard to end and could have unintended consequences. he said quote, i am sympathetic to the concerns of the president has been america has entered into trading relationships that have been disadvantageous to our country and our country's workers. he says that we start by raising tariffs on aluminum and steel it would be easy for trading partners to retaliate against our agricultural sector.
4:02 pm
details will be released next week. it's possible that certain countries could be exempted. another president wanted 25% tariff on steel and 10% on aluminum. he contends that the u.s. needs to do this to counter china and other countries overproducing metals and dumping cheaper steel and aluminum on the u.s. if other nations retaliate and slap tariffs the president trump says, trade wars are good and easy to win. the president tweeted that the united states has an 800 billion-dollar trade deficit because of our very stupid trade deals and policies. our jobs and wealth are being given to other countries and have been taken advantage as advantage us for years. they laugh at us. labor unions are putting his announcement. they say steel and aluminum

tariffs are good steps toward fixing predatory practices that hurt workers and sheet companies that produce in the u.s. >> thank you. >> julie: president trump arrived to back in washington. the president and first lady are set to attend the grid iron dinner and annual white tie even for d.c. journalists. the white house looks to move forward after a tumultuous week. they clarified the presidents position on gun law. there are reports that hr mcmaster and gary cohen's might not be far behind. >> president trump only spent about 24 hours in florida. he got here yesterday evening i went to an rnc donor dinner and then today he played golf in the morning spoke to the donors were more time before getting on and force one and heading home.
4:04 pm
this week the white house have been capturing headlines at times overs time overshadowing policy. hope hicks plans on leaving her job in the coming weeks. he was one of the closest advisers. she resigned the day after testifying before the house intelligence committee. she had been considering leaving before this week. white house denies rumors of two other potential exits. they're pushing back on reports that gary collins could be leaving soon. he's unhappy with the presidents terror proposal. sarah sanders is pushing back and nsa advisor, is about to be forced out. >> general mcmaster is not going anywhere. as the president said yesterday, he thinks is doing a great job and is glad he is here. i was making a joke before we
4:05 pm
started that the chaos i see most this morning i left three preschoolers and a bunch of flashlights with the power out at my house. that was chaotic and far more chaotic this morning the when i got to the office. >> the president is set to attend the grid iron dinner tonight. it's one of the oldest journalism clubs in the city. in the past he did not attend. he sent vice president mike pence last year. tonight he will be attending. he skipped out on other press president dinners like this. this is a smaller version. tonight he says he will be there. >> julie: thank you. has intelligent chairman is breaking from president trump on chef sessions. to investigate alleged pfizer abuses by the fbi. >> i was happy to see jeff sessions appoint -- because we
4:06 pm
welcome our people investigating this. i welcome anybody to help investigate. so far it's only the house intelligence committee republicans who are doing anything to get to the bottom of who is colluding with russia. >> julie: the president was less than drilled and said why is jeff sessions what asking the inspector general to investigate massive fisa abuses. >> isn't the idea is to use justice department lawyers, disgraceful. >> susan, thank you for being here. you disagree with the comments that nunez is truly on with the president. >> i don't see them at opposite sides. nunez was one of the first people to discredit the idea that there is collusion between the president and russia.
4:07 pm
he was among the first people to make the claim that perhaps the obama administration had misused surveillance tools to spy on the trump campaign. he's been adamant about making sure the investigation into hillary clinton's e-mail service was also thorough and properly done. i don't see them on opposite sides of the fence when it comes to the idea of how the investigation is being conducted. the main issue is over the inspector general. they take a while to produce these reports. it has been a while people are participating the report on how they investigate hillary clinton's private e-mail server. i think you can hear that a part of the president. nunez the same we're the ones crying foul about this probe about this trump and also the
4:08 pm
origins of it. and so at least you could get someone else to look for it. he was not appointed by president trump that remains to be seen. it's not clear how critical that may be but they do take a while. that's a case with almost all the investigations. they seem to take an eternity. you can hear the impatience on part of the president. he wants answers. i don't think there at odds over the general idea of having a look dad. >> the ig has no prosecutorial power. one would say shouldn't whoever is overseeing it have the ability to prosecute.
4:09 pm
bob doesn't have a problem with what sessions did but he also doesn't think the ig will be enough. >> i am comfortable that as long as that new request by jeff sessions does not delay the release of the report regarding what he was already conducting i'm fine with that. the judiciary committee, trey gaudi and i will continue to investigate this matter until there is an appropriate outside investigation with prosecutorial power. >> what's your take on that? >> i don't know if that will happen. i think there are factions of people who want a special investigation but i don't know if there is an appetite for that.
4:10 pm
it's rolling slowly through the ig process. we been waiting a long time so now could be slowed down by adding more on then even more when you get the report. at one have any teeth. congress has to decide how far they want to take it. it will depend on what's on in the report. >> nunez clearly has more faith in the inspector general than the president does. but the question is i'm the president raises a good point whether or not it poses a conflict of interest by having the doj in being appointed by obama opposes a conflict of interest which are basically used to obtain warrants further and advis advisory.
4:11 pm
>> it's a relevant question. no one knows what is in the report yet. but as part of the issue like they're not jumping all over. the energies tend to be a separate and very neutral and apolitical. there hasn't been history of trouble in that department. that's why you don't have newness and we should have a special pro. but other people think it should happen what's the report went to save the going to take a hard look at what happens. then you might start to hear criticism or praise. there's no separating politics. the idea that it would be a straight probe. when you get to congress politics are part of it. you have to keep that in mind. >> julie: thank you.
4:12 pm

nra. this came one day after the president surprise republicans during a bipartisan meeting. he push for tighter but background checks and restrictions of people under 21. he suggested authorities should get take firearms for people without due process people deemed as dangerous. >> i like the were comprehensive. people say it's a bad word because to me and i like it. i'd rather have a comprehensive bill. >> the most important thing you've said is that we act. we don't go home empty-handed. >> it be nice to create something that is beautiful, that works. >> for you to bring back the chief correspondent. the president has gone this week from backing a broad overhaul of gun-control to calling for the process a meeting with the nra and the backing away from serious reforms.
4:33 pm
does the white house need to pick a series of reforms and stick to them so we can get a consensus. >> that was the populous president versus the reality of congress clashing right there. what he really needs to do is understand what is possible in congress with his own party. you can do a big broad thing but using mostly democrats to do it. if you're going to pass something with republicans because republicans run both chambers looking at a gun-control measure that could be more narrow. the president said he wants a big comprehensive bill. when it comes to gun-control legislation that will be tough to do. they were pretty close on a narrow bill that could have bolstered the way that we report to the national instant background check system. it would ensure that up and make sure they're not gaps that
4:34 pm
currently exist. it had a rare backing from the nra. then we heard the president calling for these more dramatic measures that you just pointed out. what i hear from capitol hill is lawmakers saying why is that the president put in writing what his proposal is. specifically what he wants to get done. lindsay graham said that's what he wants to see. and it doesn't even mean it gets for consideration. what can congress do and what does the president want. were still not sure. >> i think he wants a bipartisan resolution. when he held the meeting and had diane feinstein sitting right next to thousand image where people thought wow, she was
4:35 pm
almost an agreement with him. then he met with the nra. people are concerned that he was going to back down and i support the second amendment by agreeing to the fact that background checks need to be more stern and take guns from people who are dangerous. here sarah sanders talking about how he still supports certain gun legislation such as raising the age to 21. >> the president wants to talk to all of the big stakeholders. his book was students, parents, teachers, local law enforcement, state and federal authorities and members of the nra. he will continue those conversations and work with congress to create legislation that could help improve the system to make sure were doing everything we can to protect kids in schools. >> julie: the problem is the action on gun legislation has come to. mitch mcconnell has said that
4:36 pm
he's not doing the gun debate. paul ryan has disappeared from the gun debate, so it is a go from here? >> if the president continues to meet with stakeholders a write out a plan if he can get the nra on board with him and the republicans i bought he has been able to do that with other issues. you never know. he is this populous president. he could change the dynamic. the traditionally the kind of broad bill he was originally talking about, you will get that through. the democrats heard what the president said then late last week they came forward with their own belt that had universal background checks and call for an amendment on the diane feinstein proposal. that's why things have come to a halt. that's not likely come up in the house or senate.
4:37 pm
it doesn't mean it's the end of the story whether president can play a big role. >> julie: thank you for sticking around. new questions of whether the accused killer in parkland, florida could have claimed more victims. new images revealing that nicholas potentially tried to mimic the las vegas shooter. he may have tried to shoot out a window on a higher for the school in an attempt to fire down on the people below. but he was unsuccessful. matt has details tonight. >> these hurricane resistant windows designed to take people from wind and brie may have saved a lot of lives. protecting people from bullets. these images appear to show at least one high floor window riddled with bullets. one officer said the bullets
4:38 pm
appeared to be coming from inside. it appears his efforts to establish that higher vantage point was thwarted by their use of hurricane resistant windows. they also said he was trying to shoot out the windows on the third floor teachers lounge. if he had succeeded who knows, more people would have died. he would've had site to a wide open courtyard. another shows boxes of evidence with biohazard pictures which could contain evidence with blood on it. this evidence is being investigated. of timeline of the day will be confirmed. the school tells us they would like to tear down and replace that building pending approval and funding from lawmakers. today this shooters behind bars and charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder.

>> julie: the florida senate gather for saturday session were shot down a proposed ban on assault weapons. what happened? >> it during the days after the shooting the house voted down a proposed ban and then today in an emotional session the senate shut down a proposed ban on ar 15's statewide. >> one of the biggest sporting good retailers in the u.s. is ending sales of all assault style guns. dick's sporting goods will no longer sell the kind of gun used to kill 17 people at the high school. the 19-year-old shooter bought a shotgun at a dick store. that the same weapon used by the company ceo says it could have been. a former dicks employee quit of their new policy. he called it and called in to us earlier.
4:40 pm
>> i believe dick's sporting goods and these other stores changing the age to 21 are discriminating against a certain class of individuals. there discriminating buyer age, no other reason. >> dicks is joining walmart and kroger's from 18 - 21. how to take a timeout for a common sense second. of course owning the gun is the right of every u.s. citizen. it is the responsibility of lawmakers to prevent those who cannot use one. it's not an infringement on the second amendment to stop the mentally ill. but how do you go be on that. background checks should include criminal records and any history of violence and drug abuse.
4:41 pm
why not require training? in israel for example you need a doctors note proving no mental illness or history of drug abuse. you must demonstrate that you can use a gun and a firing range before taking it home with a limited supply bullets. a quick lambeau it does what it needs to do. there doesn't need to be 30. does america need an assault weapon to protect itself, target shooter provide food for the family? you're not applying for a driver's license here. just like the law-enforcement military get proper training, so should civilians. owning a gun is is a right but it's our responsibility as americans to carry one responsibly. free to join me on this conversation, controversy alone but one that needs to be had, on twitter at julie banderas. the tsa and amtrak are testing new technology meant to detect would be attackers wearing suicide vests. these are taking place at u.s. penn station.
