♪ >> tucker: good evening and welcome to "tucker carlson tonight." i'm mark stein in for tucker who is picking up his oscar for best expression. academy awards hit all time low. not only in the ratings but award show into a political diatribe. the oscars viewership plunged 20%. movie fans who did watch the almost four hour broadcast was subjected to an endless torrent of political nonsense from haute jimmy kimmel. >> the stun -- she was born in

5:03 pm
why did they think it would be otherwise? >> we hear year after year this is the lowest rating x event ever. it's been happening as a trend. people sort of point a chor chod cutting. that's usually the excuse. these numbers are devastating. think about it. when one out of five people that watched last year, say i'm not going to watch this year. when you have a 20% drop. think about how many people, 5 million is. still in madison square garden, 277 times. that's how many people didn't tune in. i think in the past, maybe some who identify as republican, conservatives, would give the show a chance and watch before they turned off. now we're at a point, you talked to so many people who say, voted for president trump, they would sayer i wasn't going to give this a chance because i knew what to expect virtue signaling.

5:06 pm
this is the kind of movie. in other words, why do they not do what acting is supposed to be about. great characters, great stories instead of just doing this kind of identity politics? >> identity politics sums it up nicely. we saw lot of diversity last night. everybody celebrates diversity. it's great. only diversity that isn't accepted is diversity of thought. another kind of political opinion. if that happens, you get blacklisted. honestly from political perspective, let's say you're president trump during the 2016 election, you didn't have almost any hollywood support. you had scott -- it was him and maybe clint eastwood. that's it. >> i love that the way the republican book of hollywood celebrities is a single sheet of

5:21 pm
the russians. he's not interested in looking at that. >> you put it this way. you say here's mueller and the fire department, they broken down the front door. they're looking for candle in the trump house. next door the democrat house is a flame with russia. >> just a couple of examples, the russian reset that's a collusion of sort. hillary clinton had the uranium one deal which she approved in exchange for 20% of u.s. uranium supply to the kremlin. >> why don't any of hillary's aides have it turn over all their e-mails. >> it strikes me as amazing. not only are there no indictments, mueller is not asking the question. you have a boeing deal where hillary got involved. boeing gives $900,000 to the

5:31 pm
even so, even if he had a 10 bullet ammunition magazine, he was able so slaughter 17 kids. >> don't you think what's been clear since this happened, is this gun control issue is actually going nowhere. people understand that in fact it was a failure of government. you had a sheriff's deputy stationed at school who did nothing. who decided to stay outside until the gunman finished killing everybody. you have a federal government that incentivizes ignoring problem teenagers according to which preferred identity group they belong to. what appears to your group to be a control issue is a story of lavish government failure from federal to local.
5:32 pm
>> you have a better idea. almost everybody in this country including congress. >> just wait a minute on this, the issue here is not whether there's a better idea. it's the fact that the failure of government. this is absurd. you got a sheriff's deputy in a schoolhouse which would be seen nuts back when you or i were at school. he does nothing. why should people -- when you paying for a guy an armed sheriff's deputy to be at a schoolhouse all day long and he does nothing. why would any prudent person want to mortgage their safety for the government? >> sure. i agree that guy should have been fired yesterday. i'm sorry he hasn't. that's not usually the case. whether there is security or isn't security, whether they do their jobs or not. mass shootings going to schools and public places, because they

5:35 pm
which is the idea government programs that incentivize, ignoring problem teenagers according whether they happen to be hispanic or african-american or whatever fashionable identity group. >> if there was such a program, i'm not aware of it. if there was, there shouldn't be. there should be more government spending. there should be more private spending to track down kids who have legitimate emotional and mental disturbances and get them rooted in the treatment. >> where do you stand on this boycotting the nra? >> i think it's a great thing. >> there's 5 million members of the nra. how many members of it your group? >> there's some debate about how many members the nra has. it's probably a million. the nra says often, i happen to agree that politics is from
