we will see you live from sacramento tomorrow with big news. good night from washington. i am shannon bream. ♪ >> mark: good evening and welcome to "tucker carlson tonight." t i'm mark steyn in for tucker who is picking up his oscar for best quizzical expression. the academy awards hit an all-time low not only in thesi ratings but in turning an award show into a political diatribe. the oscars viewership plunged 20%. movie fans who did watch the almost four-hour broadcast was subjected to an endless torrento of political nonsense from host jimmy kimmel. >> the stunning lupita nyong'o she was born in mexico and raised in kenya.
9:01 pm
let the tweet storm from the president's toilet begin. >> none other than president trump called "get out" the best three quarters of the movie this year. we make movies to upset mike pence. if the last two years that taught us anything, it's thatt reality can be depressing. tonight's nominated documentaries show us where there is darkness, there's hope. except at the white house. hope quit on wednesday. >> mark: the stars joined in. >> if you do win and oscar tonight, speak from the heart. if you want to encourage others to join the amazing students at parkland on the march on the 24th, do that. >> a land where dreamers live and we'den freedom dwells.

immigrants get the benefits. we put up monuments for the feminist. tell they in god's way. > like everyone watching, we are dreamers. dreams are the foundation of hollywood, and dreams are the foundation of america. >> to all the dreamers out there, we stand with you. >> mark: the dreamer stand with them. don't make the mistake of standing too close. otherwise they'll have to call security. on "the view," ana navarro complained. there weren't enough left wing screens. >> we wanted more of that stuff. more trump jokes, more nra messages. i can't stand trump. i was actually disappointed. it let me down. >> mark: more trump jokes, more nra jokes. all those movie awards getting the way. joe concha writes about media. he joins us.s. joe, this was a rating disaster.
9:03 pm
why did they think it would be otherwise? >> we hear year after year this is the lowest rating x event ever. it's been happening as a trend. people sort of point to cord cutting. that's usually the excuse. these numbers are devastating. think about it. when one out of five people that watched last year say i'm not going to watch this year. when you have a 20% drop. think about how many people, 5 million is. you could fill madison square garden 277 times. that's how many people didn't tune in.id i think in the past, maybe some who identify as republican, conservatives, would give the show a chance and watch before they turned off. now we're at a point, you talkeh to so many people who say, voted for president trump, they would say i wasn't going to give this a chance because i knew what to expect: virtue signaling.
9:04 pm
>> mark: it's actually even more ridiculous this year. with harvey weinstein, we know however bad the world may be, they're own industry is in the toilet. they were walking kind of difficult tight rope between basically saying, we've cleaned up our act. and we're here to tell you howle cleaned up it is. >> it seems they lost the soap box at this point. i hollywood, we got a problem. we saw everything what happened with weinstein or kevin spacey. i don't know if i heard the name weinstein. down the list. we heard references to the me too movement. they were walking a very fine line last night. you can't put humpty dumpty back togetherne. in this case, i think many folks just knew what to expect when it came to a show like this. said, i'm not going to deal with it.
9:05 pm
i'd rather watch something else. that's a problem for hollywood. box office this year, receipts were down to their lowest level in 25 years. i think honestly they're running out of ideas. how many prequels and sequels and remakes can we see? let's start to see couple more original types of movies. i loved "darkest hour." let's see some originality and stop the preaching. >> mark: we didn't hear a lot about the movies.. what was so weird about it, african-american actors would come out talking about being african americans and transgender actresses will talk about being transgender. billy wilder 1959. i can't imagine he would come out and say as a hungarian american, i know what it's like to be an immigrant.
9:06 pm
in other words, why do they not do what acting is supposed to by about. great characters, great stories instead of just doing this kind of lame-o identity politics? >> identity politics sums it up nicely. we saw lot of diversity last night. everybody celebrates s diversity. and it's great. the only diversity that isn't accepted is diversity of thought. another kind of political opinion. if that happens, you get blacklisted. honestly from a political perspective, let's say you're president trump during the 2016 election, you didn't have almost any hollywood support. you had scott baio. chachi was great in happy days. it was him and maybe clint eastwood. >> mark: i love that the way the republican book of hollywood celebrities is a single sheet of paper, double spaced.

we have f heard the pervasive narrative of mexican immigrants. we see that mexican immigrants are not rapists and criminals.. they're oscar winners. >> mark: come on, wendy. the great director, he said to me, great movies stars are what he called sports. they're fabulous freaks. you can have a great mexican director and you can have a great french composer. you can have a great canadian editor and have a great chilean transgender actress. that doesn't tell you why you have transgender immigration to the united states. all those things, if you're in the movie business, you're exceptional.ex that doesn't tell you anything about anything. >> it does tell us that america is a beautiful melting pot. we are not monolithic.
9:09 pm
we come from diverse backgrounds. we are diversese people. that's what the oscar shows us. just to speak about the trends, we cannot put forth this commentary that says the trends are low. trends tie with box office hits. when you have a movie that is nominated that is not necessarily a hit in the theaters, we see a downward trend in those people watch the oscars. t we saw same thing in 2008. >> mark: that's not true. >> it is true. >> mark: this fish movie where the chick dates the fish. that actually was a hit. it was a hit movie. don't ask me why. >> that's not true. it only made $57.4 million. when we put that comparison to "black panther," it made $900 million. no, it's not a, blockbuster. people want to go to wakanda.

9:11 pm

"the titanic" was nominated. that was a blockbuster. hopefully next year we will see blockbusters. >> mark: you sound like that "this is spinal tap" movie.

the city has managed to set aside more than $7 million to give lawyers for illegal immigrants facing deportation. they plan to spend millions more. meanwhile today marks the expiration date that president trump set for daca. but the program remains in force thanks to activist judges who claim it's illegal to end the program that's illegal in the first place. you know it makes sense. ali noorani is executive director at the national immigration forum. he joins us. ali, why is this a priority for the government of san francisco? >> we do a lot of work with law enforcement across the country. whether it's san francisco, st. louis or spartanburg. the local cop wants to do their job and serve and protect. they don't want to be policing a sanctuary city. they would be policing a safe city. at the end of the day, that requires documented community must trust local police.
9:51 pm
the tension between local police and i.c.e. is undermining what the local police like to do. >> mark: that's a familiar argument from immigration activist. if you enforce the law, it discourages illegal immigrants from cooperating with police departments. for example, in this hall in california, they rounded up 230 undocumented immigrants of which exactly half have beenp convicted of serious crimes including child sex crimes, assault, and weapons charges. why would anyone wish to keep these people illegally in the united states? >> you just talked about, there's the right way to spend valuable law enforcement resources: to go after themehe public safety threats. you said that was half the 232. i'm not a math major.

that means half the people they detained were not public safety threats. >> mark: they are illegal immigrants. >> it's a waste of public resources and pushes immigrants who are victims of crimes, witnesses to crimes, away from local law enforcement. >> mark: no, ali it pushes illegal immigrants. as a legal immigrant, i get concerned. >> there's another interesting fact with all this. the majority of immigrant families are mixed status. that means somebody in thee household is documented and somebody is undocumented. if that person who is documented does not trust local law enforcement. they're worried that the cop will ask their wife for immigration status. they're not going to report that crime. this is more complicated than just a pure black and white issue. that's why we need local law enforcement to do their job and serve and protect.
9:53 pm
>> mark: you know as well as i do what that means is that democrat cities will become playgrounds for illegal immigrants. when immigration is -- we canhe argue about whether certain areas of government are the province of the federal or state or local government. one thing that's indisputable.ha the nation's borders and who is admitted to live among american citizens is the sole responsibility of the federal government. >> you have done a great jobe of reading and memorizing the constitution. you're correct. what's missing here, mark, is cooperation and collaboration between federal immigration enforcement and local law enforcement. i.c.e. comes in and knocks on the door and says police. that immigrant community thinks the local police is profiling the entire community. that's why we want immigration enforcement to prioritize their resources.

>> mark: you say cooperation. we now have subversion.. where mayors are tipping off criminal elements to the fact that federal authorities will be staging raids. do you have proof of that? >> what we need to be doing in a state like california which is the fifth largest economy in the world, we need to make sure that the state is safe and secure. >> mark: wait a minute. these are all great sounding words. safe and secure. >> do you have a problem with safe and security? >> mark: i do when there's euphemism for industrial scale law breaking. i do have a problem with the nice sounding words for criminality, which is what this is. >> i disagree. we should be prioritizing public safety threats such as child predators.
