>> president trump once again saying the united states should never have signed that agreement. and issuing a stern warning to tehran about its nuclear program. >> won't be so easy for them to restart. >> mr. president. >> they are not going to be restarting anything. they restart it, they will have big problems, bigger than they ever had before. you can mark it down. they restart their nuclear program, they will have bigger problems than they have ever had before. >> shepard: iran heard that and fired back almost immediately. its president saying there will be grave cons sequences if the united states backs out of that agreement. president trump also attacked the former secretary of state john kerry for not discussing other issues involving iran while making the deal. secretary kerry wrote in the "the washington post" op-ed last fall that the agreement was, as everyone should have known, a result of a negotiation, not a wish list. secretary kerry writing the world was united on one issue alone. iran's nuclear capability. we could not have achieved

unity or held the sanctions regime together if we added other issues. but we believed it would be easier to deal with other differences with tehran if we weren't simultaneously confronting a nuclear regime. iran is abiding by that agreement. the trump administration has certified exactly that. today the president tee teased that only president trump knows what the do next month. if macron gets his way the agreement will hold. john roberts on fox top story live for us this afternoon. hi, john. >> good afternoon, shep. the president facing another iran deadline. may 12th either waive sanctions against iran or pull out of the comprehensive plan of action. you showed what iran's reaction was to what the president said earlier about how if iran, if the united states were to pull out of that deal, restarted its nuclear programs that we would have big, big problems on its hands.

there appears to be emerging out of this bilateral series of meetings with president macron a possible third way and that would be to leave the jcpoa in place and then craft another deal that would deal with iran's long-term nuclear goals, its ballistic missile program, and its destabilizing behavior across the middle east. but, lest macron have any doubt the president reiterated again today just how much he disliked the deal that we have now. listen here. >> it should have never been made. and we're going to see what happens on the 12th. but i will say if iran threatens us in any way, they will pay a price like few countries have ever paid. >> emmanuel macron acknowledged that there are differences a split of opinion and approach between the president and himself over what to do about iran but he thinks that through talking, shep, they may be able to work through their differences. i don't know if the

president would accept this idea of a side deal if you will to the jcpoa. it's been talked about before or if he wants to rip up the current deal and craft something that covers everything. we will see going forward. shep. >> shepard: how far apart, john, are the two on syria and specifically keeping u.s. troops there for a while. >> they do differ a little bit. remember, there was a little bit of a back and forth between the white house and the president after the syria strike when president macron said he had convinced the president to keep troops in syria. that prompted reaction from the press secretary the plan is still to get american troops out of syria as quickly as possible. over the weekend, on "fox news sunday," assad warning of dire consequences if the u.s. were to suddenly pull up stakes and leave syria, that it would leave a power vacuum there that would undoubtedly be filled by bashar al-assad. they would fund terror groups and the whole thing would be sent back into chaos again. the question is if american troops do stay in syria, how long do they stay?

until isis is defeated or stay all the way through a stabilization process? i put that question to the french president today. >> how long, president macron, do you believe u.s. troops need to stay in syria? >> we will acces assess during e weeks and months what we have to do. when you are at the end of the war have to adapt to the relates. we are not here to say this day we will leave the floor. that's impossible because it will depend on the reality on the ground. but for sure what we want to do now is to finish this work with our troops and we want to fix in the long run the situation to have peace in this region. >> the president has floated before and floated again today the idea that some of america's allies in the region notably saudi arabia and jordan should contribute financially to military operations and stabilization

operations in syria. today he went even further saying they should commit forces on the ground to help do that, shep? >> shepard: john, lots of drama on another front inside the white house today. the president is apparently now leaving the door open for nominee for veterans affair secretary to step down senate veteran affairs committee has put dr. ronny jackson's hearing on indefinite hold. lawmakers say they are looking into accusations about the behavior in the workplace, calling them serious allegations. they reportedly include creating a hostile work environment. improperly prescribing drugs and drinking on the job. so far no word on any specific examples. and fox news has not confirmed the accusations. dr. jackson has worked as a white house physician since 2006 how he got to this point, up for the job as head of the v.a. and its 360,000 employees is technically unclear reports indicate he wasn't really vetted and they had been given the nod because of all those nice things he said

about president trump after his physical. remember? >> all clinical data indicates that the president is currently very healthy and that he will remain so for the duration of his presidency. absolutely he is fit for duty. i think he will remain fit for duty for the remainder of this term and for the remainder of another term if he is elected. being with the president on the day-to-day basis it's been impressive to me has a lot of energy. a lot of energy and a lot of stamina. it's called genetics. i don't know. some people have, you know, just great genes, i told the president that if he had a healthier diet over the last 20 years he might live to be 200 years old. >> shepard: 200 except that dr. jackson also said when pressed that the president needed to lose weight, eat better and get some exercise. but president trump liked the sound of what he was hearing. and reportedly told his press secretary at the time to let the doctor talk as long as he wanted the question now is will he face a congressional q and a or is his nomination doa.

i saw him talking to msnbc in the hall over there and it didn't sound like he was about to back out. >> no. the president is really leaving the ball in ronnie jackson's court. the white house in a statement earlier today stood behind him pointing out he has been the personal physician to presidents before. president trump and never had a complaint and that he has shown the sort of leadership here at the white house that you would want to have running the veterans affairs. he pointed out with 13 million patients the v.a. is probably the biggest medical system in the world that anybody would be hard-pressed to have management credentials to run something like that. he is talking about the fact that ronny jackson doesn't have a lot of management experience, basically saying who would. the president really left the door open for jackson to withdraw if he wanted to. >> some serious allegations being leveled at him. i'm wondering what you know of those allegations and do you intend to stand by him. >> i would definitely stand behind him. he is a fine man. i will always stand behind

him. if i were him, actually, in many ways i would love to be him, but the fact is i wouldn't do it. i wouldn't do it. what does he need it for? to be abused by a bunch of politicians? >> you know, you mentioned this earlier, shep, just a second ago. and the president really does trust jackson. in fact, when he was giving the read-out on the president's physical back in early january, the president said go answer every question no matter what they ask. investigations are never far away. jonathan karl asked the president about pardoning fixer or personal attorney. >> sometimes he likes the questions he is asked and sometimes he doesn't. when hasked the question about michael cohen listen here. >> what about michael cohen are you considering pardoning michael cohen? >> on your way out. >> stupid question.

will come germany and push for the framework new foundation. what this is, shep, nonbinding amendment that they would slap over the existing deal and enemies the russians and the chinese most significantly the iranian regime signed on to this, it means nothing. the idea, also, when you just look at whether or not what are the chances of the iranians would sign on to it, it seems really next to nothing. so, at that point, if it's not enforceable, and it's nonbinding, what does it really mean this is a semantics game to make it looked like president trump could declare a new victory on a new deal. the next days and weeks will be really telling. >> shepard: what's happening with admiral ronnie jackson did they put him out and there not check anything? what happened? >> i think it's been made very clear republican senators and lawmakers were really stunned by this nomination. people were -- you know, characterizing it as the harriet miers moment. it's been very clear in trump circles for a while and out of the west wing of

the president likes to pick people that he thoroughly trusts and likes. that is the number one criteria. it was for mike pompeo. it's his new decision-making. he will not be talked into picking anybody that he doesn't have good chemistry with and the qualifications will follow. whether or not a sprawling bureaucracy is something that dr. jackson was up for, these new allegations have very disturbing, shep, senators of both sides of the aisle do not think he could make it through a confirmation process. if they prove to be true and people come forward and validate the story. so, they are not getting into big specifics on, this but there has been a mention of misuse of prescription -- misprescribing drugs. prescriptions and then also drinking on the job. and i think that you can just tell on capitol hill today that republicans and democratic senators, because there is such goodwill. is he widely liked by obama administration alumni. many people in the trump administration. there might be a process indicated by president

>> shepard: breaking news on fox news channel. if-16 fighter jet has crash landed in arizona. airport about 150 miles north and west of phoenix. fox news can confirm the pilot ejected and is in good condition but is off to the hospital. our jennifer griffin is at the pentagon with the rest of the story. jen? >> shep, that's right, an air force f-16 from luke air force base crash landed in arizona about two hours ago. we're told the pilot is in good condition after ejecting near the california border about three hours away from phoenix. the f-16 was assigned to the 56 fighter wing. it diverted and attempted to land at lake havasu city municipal airport at 10:35 a.m. today. routine training flight. according to a statement during landing the aircraft

stretch of young street that has been closed down since the incident yesterday afternoon. you can see the crime scene tape stretching block after block. we do have street sweepers out here. we are told they may reopen this busy thoroughfare later today. we saw members of the police public safety unity doing evidence search with officers line to line curb to curb checking the pavement for any missing pieces of that ryder rental van or personal effects from the two dozen victims. as you mentioned the suspect out of court this morning showed no emotion according to our producer in the courtroom. never said a word except his name and to speak quietly with his lawyer. he is being held as you mentioned on 10 counts of first degree murder and 13 counts of attempted murder, shep? >> shepard: rick, a lot of people are going to go what do you mean it isn't terror? it certainly terrorized those people. there is a definition for that national security alerts. what do you know about motive? >> well, authorities haven't discussed it publicly except as you mentioned to make reference to that cryptic

facebook message. i have a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation who says in fact, when authorities scrubbed this guy's social media, they found facebook and twitter posts paying homage to a california masked killer named elliott roger who stand, shot, and ran over 20 people back in 2014 before taking his own life. six of those people died. roger left behind a manifesto saying he wanted to punish women for rejecting him and men for being sexually active. minute nasaian apparently empathized. his posts had similar issues revolving around inyou have inyy celibacy. >> rick leventhal in toronto. thank you. the former h.w. bush, bush the 41st is in the hospital this hour just days after the funeral for his wife of 73 years. that's according to his spokesman who says the former president has an

infection that has spread to his blood. but the new word is he is responding to treatment and appears to the doctors to be recovering. this spokesman also said, and i quote: the 41st president wants to go to maine this summer. he's the most goal-oriented person on the planet. and i would not bet against him. the bushes, of course, have a home in kennebunkport. we heard stories about it at barbara bush's funeral on saturday. our correspondent jonathan hunt is outside that hospital in houston. what more do we know about the former president's condition, jonathan? >> well, shep, a short time ago the president's spokesman jim mcgraph said on twitter that he had nothing new to tell us about the president's condition but that he would, quote: happily reaffirm what he said before, that president george h.w. bush is, quote, responding and recovering. it is now, of course, more than 48 hours since the former president was brought here to methodist hospital.

>> i'm lea gabrielle with a fox report and more of today's headlines. a funeral today for two florida sheriff's deputies gunned down while sitting inside a chinese restaurant. the shooting happened last week in trenton, west of gainsville. investigators say the suspect then went to his car and killed himself: and in los angeles, police responding to a shooting at the scene of a house fire. cops say the gunman opened fire while crews were knocking down the flames, killing his mother just outside the home. according to investigators, there was a standoff with the suspect before he surrendered. they say it appears the suspect shot himself. he is in critical condition. and video of a young giraffe on the loose at a zoo in fort wayne, indiana, north

>> shepard: more now on the uncertainty at very minimum surrounding president trump's pick to lead the department of veterans affairs dr. ronny jackson. president trump has said that he stands by his physician but he also says the decision moving ahead on the process is jackson's and that he doesn't want him to go through an ugly process. our chief congressional correspondent mike emanuel is live on capitol hill. they are asking a lot of questions up there. >> shep, no question about it and we have actually caught up with dr. ronny jackson this afternoon when he was being peppered with questions. >> rescheduling the hearing. getting the process moving. >> is there any truth to these allegations? >> thanks, guys.

>> any response to the questions. >> what makes you qualified for this job? >> can i answer the questions, absolutely. i'm looking forward to rescheduling the hearing and answering everyone's questions. >> the republican senator dr. jackson was meeting with, gave him a thumbs up after the meeting. >> i had a solid conversation with admiral jackson. he is impressive in the way he presents his case. he knows of nothing that would prohibit him from being qualified, capable and right person to be the secretary of the department of veterans affairs. >> senate majority leader mitch mcconnell just told reporters is he waiting to hear from the president and the relevant committee about how they want to proceed. shep. >> shepard: the president talked openly about this being an effort to stop his appointments or recommendations from happening. it isn't democrats here -- i mean it is but it is also very much republicans. they all have questions, right? >> there are a lot of questions.

a lot of folks saying perhaps there should have been better vetting before this nomination was sent up here in terms of democrats, some of them are taking this as an opportunity to go after the white house. senate democratic leader chuck schumer says he doesn't think there was proper vetting of dr. jackson's nomination so schumer says lawmakers will do the vetting themselves. the top democrat on the relevant committee also talked about the nomination earlier today. >> headline is we have postponed the hearing. there are more questions to fully vet out admirable jackson. i don't have any facts. i can't tell you this is happening, this is happening. all i can tell you is we are asking a lot of questions and we are following up on a lot of claims that have been made. >> john thune was asked a short time ago if the president remain a nominee and thune told reporters it's not exactly a real high vote of confidence so we wait to see if dr. jackson

wants to go forward or if he, perhaps, has had enough. shep? >> shepard: lack of vet something recurring theme. new court documents that show the fbi interviewed president trump's former campaign manager chairman or i should say chairman paul manafort not once but twice before he joined the 2016 campaign. those court filings came out late yesterday in a sort of document dump. the new information raises questions about the trump campaign's vetting of lots of staff members. and whether paul manafort, specifically, ever told anybody about talking with the fbi dments show special mueller raids on condo and storage locker. manafort's team argues the searches were illegal. paul manafort faces charges, including conspiracy against the united states, money laundering and failing to register as an agent of a foreign country. chief intelligence correspondent catherine herridge is live in d.c. catherine? >> shep, fox news independently reviewed the court filing that runs 23

pages in length. and there are a number of new revelations about the search warrant executed last summer. among them that investigators wanted any and all records connected to the participants of the june 2016 trump tower meeting involving the president's son,son, jared kushner, manafort, the russian lawyer and others. president trump son took the meeting promised dirt on hillary clinton when the real discuss sanctions against those close to vladimir putin. communication record documents and other files involving any of the attendees of the june 29, 2016 meeting. the aguliaras are important to the story because they are long-time contacts to president trump and russians and businessmen and entertainers. it's worth noting in january the russian lawyer nets sky a told fox news she had yet to be contacted by robert

mueller and a claim she peteerepeatedagain: manafort'ss focused on two issues. they claim the severance and charges related to his work in the ukraine are outside the mandated, the scope if you will of the special counsel russia investigation. that tasked robert mueller to look at trump campaign and russian officials as well as those issues that arise from the investigation. and that really is the key phrase because that can be done with the al-approval of the deputy attorney general. in his legal team is focused on the legality of the warrant and specifically whether evidence gathered from his storage locker was used to justify the search warrant that was later executed on his virginia condo. special counsel team said they had enough to justify the warrant of man -- because, pardon me. because it's very complicated story, shep. they had enough to justify the search of the home because they got access to the storage locker from one of the manafort's assistants who was a person who signed to get possession of the

storage locker in the first place. the bottom line is that the judge here in washington, d.c. has taken these filings under advisement and wait for an answer from the court on both of these critical issues in the case, shep? >> shepard: very good. catherine, thanks. >> you're welcome. >> shepard: headline lack of vetting. let's turn to deputy news director for axios. good to see you. >> good to see you. >> shepard: on manafort, the suggestion is did the white house or the future white house even have any idea that paul manafort had been interviewed not once but twice by the fbi before he even came on board? >> right. well, so as this story is developing, one thing is clear that manafort, perhaps, did not publicly disclose these fbi interviews that happened before he joined the trump campaign who is to say the trump campaign would have hired him anyway had they known but it seems they are not aware of this. >> shepard: question about dr. jackson who has been put up v.a. and similar series of questions. accusations now of a hostile

work environment. of drinking on the job. of misprescribing prescriptions and now an indefinite postponement of a hearing. did they vet him at all? >> they didn't. and sources close to the situation told my colleague at axios, jonathan swan that chief of staff john kelly was really upset that trump and his team didn't properly vet ronny jackson and didn't vet him at all as you mentioned before he was announced to be the replacement for david shulkin. you know, after the rob porter situation happened where it was clear that either he wasn't vetted properly or his allegations of domestic violence and his past with his wives wasn't properly vetted throughout his tenure, that situation cannot happen again. especially with someone who is leading such a critical agency such as the v.a. that has 300,000 employees and is something that trump has advocated for reforming since he was running for president. it looks sloppy. it is sloppy. and now out v.a. is still without a new leader. >> shepard: the president stood by rob porter up until and including the time when he was tossed. and now the president made

shipship the dow has been dropping all day, down 620 at one point. analysts are blaming tech and industrial stocks. here is a live look at the big board. it's been a lot worse than this during the day. all three of the big indices are down. deidre bolton is here fox business network. >> big sell off. >> shepard: why is that. >> you showed the dow and industrials. that's a huge sentiment. you had two of the big companies super stars normally for the dow. both say either they met or exceeded earnings expectations for the numbers they just gave us this morning but, get what, no one cares about the past. everyone cares about the future.
