major disaster area and hawaii. after the volcano on the big island released a dangerous level and toxic gas. scientists now sing can be a massive explosion at the summit crater. the erection was destroyed about two dozen homes so far. and around 2000 people forced to evacuate. >> for those of us who have problems with heart conditions, that gas coming up is harmful. >> we are a little nervous and talking to friends. they were a little nervous too. >> will live in los angeles with the very latest on the story. >> it is a scary time for residents on the big island. as they prepare for more from the kilauea volcano. just this morning a discovery and confirmation of a brand-new event in the ground. not far from residential naked. no significant lava flow yet from that. just what they're calling a spattering.
1:15 pm
for the past nine days now they have been earthquakes, lava and toxic gas. no, yet another concern. officials are warning of more intense explosions that could send huge six foot wide folders the size of refrigerators shooting into the air after half a mile away. as well as ash plumes that could go as high as 20,000 feet in the air. >> an extraordinary time for the kilauea volcano. when it came here 27 or 28 years ago i never thought, i knew it was capable of producing ash eruptions but never thought i would see the day and here we are. >> the latest activity from the volcano began on april 30 when a crater floor began to collapse. triggering a series of earthquakes. that pushed lava into underground chambers which have emerged from 16 now new events in the ground. llama now covers more than 117 acres of land. it has destroyed at least 26
1:16 pm
homes and hundreds of people are still without power. the state park where the volcano sits have been closed down to the public and evacuation orders are in place for about 2000 people that live nearby. other parts of the only remain very much open to tourists the hotels just to the north are open for the time being. and all of the popular resort in the kona district are too far away to be effective. that is really people near kilauea have been told that the volcanic activity could go on for months. the island is scrambling now to find the evacuees more permanent housing. back to you. >> that is great concern for those folks living there. meanwhile, it is not just the lava that is a concern. officials arrange about the toxic gas. i was just at the volcano visiting in september, i believe it was. and just the fumes, of gas that are in the air, it is very strong! now you have this, how does that affect the residence?
1:17 pm
>> i am sure that you experienced that. and you heard one woman at the top of the segment was very concerned about health issues. we have seen pictures of the smoke, the plume coming of the volcano. that is sulfur dioxide. that affects people in this way. it can irritate your eyes. it can irritate the tissues in the membrane in your nose and your throat and ears. people who are already sensitive to those issues and have health problems, they are very concerned. they are part of the evacuees for now, the only is looking for more permanent housing. a lot of people are in red cross shelters. >> thank you anita. we want to let you know that coming up in the next hour will talk about this disaster in hawaii and why what's happening there is raising some concerns of eruptions along the west

coast. >> meanwhile back to semi-standup in north korea. lots of anticipation as you know for the upcoming summit between donald trump and kim jong-un. north korea nothing near closing the nuclear test site where they tested 610 tests. is this for real or just a symbolic gesture? major general austin joins us, a former commander of the us intercontinental listed missile force in denver this afternoon. general, do you think is shutting the site down when they've had the nuclear explosion in the past, do think it is meaningful? real concrete step or a dog and pony show? there are reports that much of this has collapsed. >> i think that if i were him i would put a bow on it right now and i would do big ceremony to symbolically shut it down. i think that it is principally just a gesture. and an important gesture i cannot much diminish that. but at the same time even if we are able to send nuclear experts over there and take a
1:19 pm
closer look, i think that having baseline knowledge or just with the capacity is in what it would take to reconstitute that site. this would have to be something that would actually follow with a serious protocol as the process moves towards denuclearization. i think this is another gesture but again, i don't think it should be diminished too much because he is doing the things that he needs to do to keep this on track. after all, this meeting with the president of the no state is going to be about the most important day in his life publicly. and he's not going to do anything to screw that up i don't think. >> is it possible that as a test site they've already achieved and have the know-how and sophistication to have a nuclear bomb. all they need to do is put it on a ballistic missile to get in here. he says he is not the type of person to do that but is it possible they don't even need this anymore because they have achieved that goal? >> well, in terms of their weapons development and into the point that they think they
1:20 pm
have a repeatable, a device that can with their degree of confidence, producing nuclear yield have achieved what they needed to achieve at the site. they have done 100 percent of nuclear testing at that site. all six of their detonations occurred at that site. and of course as you mentioned, he had a very aggressive missile development program and has a very credible delivery system. what we do not have a lot of intelligence on is how well he can integrate the two. it is not an uncomplicated thing to put a nuclear weapon on top of that missile and then ensure that it is going to work as a weapon system. the threat is real, the capability is sufficient that we need to press with the urgency and maximum pressure the president has approached the problem with in order to begin to denuclearize north korea. >> the present talks about denuclearization. what would you like to see from this meeting and we like to see when it comes to your area,
1:21 pm
with ballistic missiles, dismantling, is that even in the realm of possibility? >> well, i think that the fact that he has put a moratorium on testing of both weapons and missiles was an important step. and of course, without even having to say it, it would be a prerequisite. this meeting will not take place if he were still doing that testing. as far as the meeting, i think the president is not going to walk away without having a very tangible credible program for us to have fire viable construct in order for us to see that he will take concrete steps. i think you have to show real concrete steps as an outgrowth of this meeting and he will have to show them pretty soon. i think that the president has indicated he is not going to tolerate being strung along as previous administrations have. he's going to have to come to the table with something very serious. very tangible and it is the
1:22 pm
timeline for him taking these steps will have to be something that we are satisfied with. this cannot be a long drawn out process. i do not need to be overly optimistic. i'm not overly optimistic at all. but i do think it will have to be a credible but relatively confined timeline in order to preserve this negotiation to go on the way it is. >> finally, what if kim jong-un does not provide that? he knows all talk and little action. what if he says we'll talk about that later and does not have anything concrete in response to the presidents proposals? >> this guy has crossed the nuclear threshold and so, we certainly made it a point and it is not just a salon. the region and the world has identified this development as something that is a danger to the region and the world. it is going to be very important that he approaches this differently than the way he has approached in the past.
1:23 pm
the challenge we have got is that how do you build trust with someone who has proven to be not trustworthy at this point? so he has some challenges for him to prove he is committed to this process and i think that if there's any evidence that he is trying to slow weakness or otherwise, just not walk as deliberately to an end state that the world expects them to start walking towards, i think that we are going to reset this and i'm not sure just how the maximum pressure will continue to get ratcheted up in order for the region with the support of china and the others in the region continue to try to get his behaviors to be consistent with what the world needs. which is principal down the road deliberately towards denuclearization. >> maybe maximum pressure is a set put his back against the wall and kim jong-un is seeing the light. certainly, we hope so. general, thank you for this

democrats who have pretty tough elections. they think that they are doing this for political purposes and how could this help? >> in the midterm election here that politics plays a role here. i think the calculation for red state there is really balancing this how much do they want to put a mark on their backs for president to attack them in the midterm. we know that is the role of the president will play here until november. do they want to risk putting that mark on their backs for the purpose of relitigating this overpass interrogation techniques? does is what i don't think they're going to make. now we look at other red state democrats to see if they feel the same pressure. and how far can they go, connate out trump, trump?

>> executives is balancing one of holding onto the president in one hand and then reaching with the other not to isolate test. so as we saw in indiana this week the president is really good at going to send his home state, rallying up a crown and has no problem attacking it by name, climbing off any little thing and it is not helpful for democrats running in those states. >> he does mention him being in the end of the day before yesterday. here is the president at that rally where he took aim directly at democrat donnelly. >> this november, indiana will face an important choice. you can send a really incredible swamp person back to the senate, like joe donnelly. or you can send up republicans like, mike braun to drain the swamp.
1:32 pm
>> he called donnelly a soft person he is really from south bend. how does that message resonate? nesters with the base but at the rally and potentially democrats in indiana? >> i think this is all the more important. especially for this confirmation in particular. given that some republicans are defecting from this confirmation. the president in that message is saying, we have a very solid majority in the senate. if you support this agenda we need more republicans. i think this nomination really accentuates that slim majority that republicans have in the senate right now. >> so you mentioned the other candidates, how does this play out? >> that is katy perry will be looking to heidi heitkamp and others. they're not made up their mind up in the coming days we will hear from them. i would not be surprised if they follow similar roles as joe manchin iii and donnelly have. because it is about relitigating the past. about this enhanced

interrogation technique and and is not convinced they want to do that. >> at the same time someone like heitkamp, young others, liberal perhaps request with this in particular, gina haspel is otherwise very qualified candidate, right? i did that will weigh heavily on the mind of heitkamp in this way because she does not want, there's no good reason to hold up this nominee. it would be hard to explain relitigating the past. there is justification to hold up the nominee to her voters in her own state. as a really hard argument. >> finally, will happen with gina haspel? >> i think gina haspel will end up getting confirmed. we will still wait to see how much impact john mccain will have on his fellow republicans but at the end of the day, i think she will be confirmed as a cia director. >> wonderful.jordan thank you

1:44 pm
further discovery could have changed the fbi assessment of the statement or is it possible that once facing robert mueller, michael flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the fbi as part of a plea bargain? >> i think both of those have a possibility but i think what grassley is looking for is the documentation of what happened but before the house and before the senate committees. one is based on contemporary and the other is based on transcription of what james comey had to say. the other thing is looking for is the actual 302, documentation of the interview and the agents of general flynn and we had to say regarding his contact or noncontact with the russian ambassador. those two things are what chuck is looking for. and james comey had said that he leads us to believe that he
1:45 pm
didn't say either one of those things. i'm not sure he is totally accurate on that. >> explained to us why does this matter? >> it matters from the standpoint of james comey credibility over this. numerous interviews in his book marathon that he is out on right now. and he said he probably misinterpreted what he had to say. for he did not say at all. again we go back to credibility. if in fact there is a document that says something opposite than what he is contending now, it turns into a debate, what he has to say in his own credibility. he said that he was going to withhold or uphold the ability to run the fbi and he would do it in an outstanding manner. but here we have an individual who actually did not uphold

that ability. he acted as a prosecutor in the case of hillary clinton server. when he should have been just the investigative agency and not given a prosecutor opinion. he did not follow peter strzok, page and others in a bid headquarters and they have done what they were alleged to have done. that is not very good stewardship of the fbi. he went and gave notes from his own personal notes to a college professor to have the made public in hopes of getting a special -- all these things just boggled my mind for the director. the way a director should be acting in the fbi. >> can you assure the american people the scenario were talking what is free of politics? >> i can never assure anybody to anybody that anything is free of politics.
