this evening. set your dvr, we are always fair and balanced. let not your heart be troubled. that was a great interview with rudy last night. i'm glad you asked all those questions. i had the new news with rudy. >> laura: that acosta, they were practically swooning in that question. how great are you, president oba obama? i think you're great. but your legacy. oh, my god, erecting a statue to him. >> sean: why not just admit he is a leftist who hates donald trump. let stop the pretense. >> laura: move on dot org is looking for a copy righter. "the new york times" buries a
11:01 pm
bombshell in a story that some say confirms that the obama administration spied on the trump campaign. and roger stone is going to explain why mueller is now focusing on him after spending a year trying to find dirt on the president. plus as we were telling you about earlier this week, a gop split over daca is hurting the momentum for the mid-term elections. the senate confirms gina haspel as cia director. mitch mcconnell has been able to secure confirmation for 21 federal appellate court judges all nominated by trump. that is one eighth of the curt federal appellate bench. and raymond arroyo will explain why rebooted tv shows are
11:02 pm
everywhere and why "murphy brown" is taking on fox news. but first the anatomy of a smear. that's the subject of tonight's angle. the left leaning media complex fancy themselves as the only truly reliable check on the president. democrats can give speeches and file minority reports on capitol hill and bob mueller may be getting a little warmer. but the press believes it has a superior moral responsibility, not necessarily to report the truth but to report a version of the truth in a way that is skewed against trump and his allies. hence, they take a comment by him about ms-13 members -- >> ms-13 gang members i know about, i cannot tell i.c.e. about them.
11:03 pm
>> we have people trying to come into the country and we're stopping a lot of them. and we're take people out of the country, you wouldn't believe how bad these people are. these aren't people. they are animals. >> laura: and they turn that comment into this. >> trump rants on unauthorized migrants. these aren't people but the animals. not to be outdone, here's how the "new york daily news" played it. trump hurling pure hate against immigrants. and trump refers to immigrants as animals. again. now, this is an obscene and ridiculous and frankly nefarious slant that then is picked up by liberal politicians like chuck schumer who wrote the following, when all our great-great grant parents came to america, they
11:04 pm
weren't animals and these people aren't either. and on tv they bounce condemnations around the echo chamber. >> what does the president mean when he said some of the immigrants are not people but an malice. >> it's a slippery slope when you dehumanize people this way. it's what nazis did and what slave owners did. >> the tone has shifted about what it means about you if you are an illegal immigrant. >> she went to nazis. yes, she went to nazis. do any of these people bother trying to look like they are in any way impartial at any time of day calling balls and strikes? you know, learn the facts or understand what the context of what the president said was or, frankly, get out of the
11:05 pm
business. journalists have an obligation to report the truth regardless of where it leads. even analysts and commentators bother to read the comments and be fair. jake tapper and cnn did note that the president was taken out of context earlier today. and the ap acknowledged that it had made an honest mistake writing, ap deleted a tweet from wednesday on the animals comment about immigrants because it wasn't made clear he was speaking after a comment about gang members. good for them. but even after those clarifications, msnbc could not help itself. >> president trump lashing out during an immigration round table at the white house. during the discussion with state and local leaders on california
11:06 pm
sanctuary laws that the white house says he was referring to the criminal immigrant gang ms-13, not to all immigrants. he didn't say so. he didn't make that clear. >> make it clear? he was responding to a point about ms-13. andrea knows better. this, my friends, is this anatomy of a smear. take a comment out of context, isolate it, blast out the worst characterization of its purpose and meaning and writes, so-called reporters and politicians spit it back on panels where the number of furrowed brows seem to outnumber the number of brain cells. and as for ms-13 as whom trump was speak. this is some of what they have been up to lately. a horrific crime in the outskirts of washington, d.c. last year. they stabbed a man more than 100
11:07 pm
times. they decapitated him and tore the heart out of his chest. or this case in loudoun county, virginia where a reported ms-13 gang member beat a muslim girl to death with a baseball bat. the suspect charged with murdering a 17-year-old muslim girl during ramadan was accused of sexually assaulting another woman a week before the teen slaying in virginia and is reportedly an ms-13 gang member. then there is this heart breaking account from the parents of teenaged girls killed by ms-13 in suffolk county, new york. >> there's not a day, a second, that i don't think about my daughter. and they just don't understand the pain. of a parent losing their child to this gang violence.
11:08 pm
our kids should be burying us, not the parents burying their kids. their lives are ahead of them. >> laura: that is one of the toughest interviews i have ever done in the history of this show, by the way. the pain on a mother's face. and the suspect in that case were seen laughing in court during a pre-trial hearing. unbelievable. no wonder sarah sanders responded this way to the animal fr fracas at the briefing. >> i think that the president should continue to use his platform in everything he can do under the law to stop these types of horrible, horrible, disgusting people. >> laura: good for her. but i would say we are insulting animals because they don't behave this way or kill for fun, thank you very much. but the last word on this goes to the president. who cleared up any confusion for
11:09 pm
all those commentators on msnbc about his comments today. >> and you know i'm referring to the ms-13 gangs that are coming in. so when the ms-13 comes in i refer to them as animals. and guess what, i always will. >> laura: this is why trump got elected. by speaking bluntly and honestly. not a lot of concern for political correctness, frankly, a lot of people are done with that anyway. but he's talking about the challenges facing america. law and order, safety on the streets. law and order at the border. he changed the political landscape and he frustrated liberal neighb liberal narratives by speaking to the people like they speak among themselves. and if he keeps speaking truth to power, he will get elected
11:10 pm
again. and perhaps that's why the left is acting like themselves, a pack of wild animals over a side comment by donald trump. and that's the angle. now shifting gears, we're now a year into the special counsel's probe and bob mueller has another target. route reuters reporting he subpoenaed jason sullivan to appear before a grand jury tomorrow. he is interested in whether the trump campaign was involved in the wikileaks release of the e-mails during the 2016 campaign. stone is the author of a new book "stone's rules: how to win at politics, business and style." now he joins us exclusively, great to see you.
11:11 pm
how you doing, roger? congrats on the book. we have some rules we pulled out. we're now into year two of this investigation today. and they're bringing in a guy who worked for you on twitter and social media trending. what's going on there? >> at this point i don't know if i'm a person of interest or just an interesting person. it's very clear that not only has mr. mueller subpoenaed a part-time consultant who worked for me for three months he dropped subpoenas on a number of other young people who worked for me. i think this is driven by a fake news narrative that insists that i must have known in advance about the hacking of the dnc which i dispute happened by the russian. i don't think it happened at all never mind by the russians and i must have had advanced notice about the content, the source and the disclosure time of the
11:12 pm
wikileaks dnc disclosures. that is false. but it's not pleasant having a special prosecutor in your phone calls and e-mails. and it's a violation of my fourth amendment rights and there's no probable cause here. julian assange has said roger stone never said anything on twit her didn't glean by simply following what i was saying in interviews and on my twitter feed. >> laura: they are hanging this on a tweet you had, where you said, trust me, it will be podesta's time in the barrel. >> i said, it will be the to december that's time in the barrel, people refer to donald trump the donald. i'm referring to john and tony because in april of 2016 their
11:13 pm
shady russian business deals were exposed in the panama papers. as a student of opposition research i was well aware of. that i never predicted the hacking or theft of john podesta's e-mails. but that is omitted from the reports and from the final report. my lawyers had to write a letter asking for a correction. the podestas refers to john and tony. >> laura: adam schiff, he says and complains that you deny everything so you need subpoenas for your tweets and direct twitter messages. he said this. >> what we ought to do is subpoena twitter for direct messages that went to these particular handles or came from roger stone so that we don't have to accept and rely upon the word of roger stone which i think is a hazardous thing to
11:14 pm
do. one thing that roger stone and the president have in common is a philosophy that you deny everything. that only suckers and losers admit to anything. if you deny it, it didn't happen. >> first of all i testified fully and truthfully to the house intelligence committee and i turned over to them the wikileaks and guccifer direct message exchanges. >> how do you get in touch with guccifer 2.0? >> by going to direct messages. based on the content and the context of that exchanges it's six weeks after the wikileaks exposures. so collusion is impossible. they are expost fashion toe. they are benign and i turned them over to the committee. >> laura: the house committee has it. >> the senate committee will
11:15 pm
have it. >> laura: you wanted to testify in public. they brought you behind closed doors. why is that? >> and now the house democrats complain that my testimony is not in public when they wanted it in private. i agree to agree with the house and senate committees. i would like my testimony to be in public. i am going to turn over these documents and they are complete. >> laura: george stephanopoulos had george caputo on. >> he just met with mueller's team this week and came out saying they asked a lot of questions about collusion and he came away concerned about paul manafort, roger stone, gates and others. >> laura: they are very concerned about manafort, stone, gates and others. >> cnbc and msnbc and that partisan hack ari melbern insist
11:16 pm
that he is focusing on my relationship with rick gates. i have never been alone with him. they are focused on dinners. there is one dinner. an manafort is supposed to join us. but at the last minute, gates shows up in his stead, showing up late and leaving early. there is no discussion of wikileaks or julian assangem and we did not work together 30 years ago. that is a falsehood. >> what about this stan nunberg comment? this is in march going back to what you said about julian assange. >> the minute he told me he met with assange i assumed he was lying.
11:17 pm
it's one of the stone rules. it's a trump tactic too. take credit and insinuate himself. >> you mean roger stone lies to people like you, his mentee. >> i call it bluffing and posturing. sometimes sam would call you 20, 30, 40 times a day. >> laura: it's called stalking, roger. 30 times a day, what? >> one friday when i wanted to get him off the phone. sam kept saying one more thing, and he said do you have plans for weekend? i said i'm going to fly to london and have dinner with julian assange. it's a joke. >> laura: things taek taken out of context and isolated and blasted out. and then they are used to smear people. that's the art of a smear. >> when i figured out he believed it, i milked it in a
11:18 pm
joke. i produced credit card records and a receipt from santa monica that proves i was in l.a. and my passport, customs records. >> laura: you've never been to russia. >> i was not in london and i have never met or spoken with julian assange. >> laura: and by the way, stone's rules from your book. hit from every angle. open multiple fronts on your enemy. the enemy must be confused and feel besieged on every side. it seem like that's what they're doing to donald trump. >> they're trying to. everything the president needs to do so survive is in this book. i would direct him to this rule. attack, attack, attack, don't defend. i love it when he calls out the fake news media.
11:19 pm
i love it when he exposes what the is greatest political scandal in american history, the use of a phony dossier using the power and authority of the state to spy on the republican candidate for president. >> laura: it's a crossover sven diagram there.
