clouds of acid. new dangers from a volcano. we'll go live to the big island. also, china's plan to make it to the dark side of the moon. that's ahead in this hour of "shepard smith reporting." i'm rick leventhal. a live look at the white house where president trump is supposed to make with christopher wray after the president ordered the justice department to see if agented supplied on his campaign for political reasons. that's what sources are telling fox news who say officials scheduled this sit-down last week. the president tweeted yesterday, i hereby demand and will do so tomorrow that the department of justice look into whether or not the fbi, doj infiltrated or surveyed the trump campaign for

any such purposes and if the demands were made by the obama administration. this comes by "the new york times" and others reported that the fbi had an informant that met several times with trump campaign officials several times during the 2016 presidential election. democratic lawmakers are criticizing the president saying he has no business trying to intervene in the doj. dianne feinstein tweeted the justice department is not an arm of the white house. the justice department is independent and serves the american people. its job is to follow the facts and the law. law enforcement investigations number be initiated and carried out free from political interference. the president's lawyer says robert mueller could wrap up much of the russia investigation by september. more on those comments in a moment. first, chief intelligence correspondent catherine herridge on fox's top story live in washington. catherine? >> thanks. good afternoon. a white house official confirmed to fox news the meeting was scheduled last weak to go over

specialist in social media manipulation. according to the times, the meeting was convened to help the trump campaign win the election. if true and fox can't confirm it, it would be the first indication that countries other than russia may have offered help to the trump campaign. president trump responded to that article in a series of seven tweets yesterday. one he says now that the special counsel's or the witch hunt as he called it has given up on russia and looking at the rest of the world, they should easily take to it the mid-terms where they can put some hurt on the republican party. don't worry about dems fisa abuse and the dossier. now we're seeing him apply pressure to get this wrapped up well before november, rick. >> rick: the president's lawyer, rudy guliani has said the mueller team has set a deadline. what do you know about that? >> rudy guliani is claiming that

mueller's team told him the obstruction of justice investigation could be wrapped up by september 1, if, a big if, if president trump agrees to be interviewed by the special counsel by mid july. so guliani is dangling the interview saying if you give us an end date, we'll give you an interview. don't forget it's entirely possible that the special counsel could subpoena president trump and force him to sit down regardless. rick? >> rick: kristin fisher live at the white house. thank you. let's bring in jordan fabian for the hill. there's another meeting going on at the white house this hour. we're hearing now from senior white house official telling one of our producers that the tweet topic and the potus concerns will absolutely be brought up during this meeting between the president and the fbi director and the deputy attorney general. >> that's right, rick. the million dollar question coming out of this meeting is whether or not this internal

watch dog investigation is going to be enough for the president or if he's going to demand to go further and open up a criminal investigation into the claims that his campaign was illegally surveilled. that would create a huge standoff with the justice department. they've been reluctant to acquiesce to those requests. we'll see what happens at 3:00. >> rick: jordan, you say the president calling for an investigation is treacherous territory. why? >> it's rare for presidents to go to the justice department and ask for investigations. there's this fire wall between the president and law enforcements to prevent politically motivated investigations. the president has crossed that line and going from attacking the russia investigation to demanding actions. we'll see again if this creates a more political legal problems for the president. >> rick: as you know, the president has long called the mueller probe a witch hunt.

some would argue the presence of an fbi mole during his campaign, that that might support his argument. >> yeah, there's reports out there that members of the trump campaign had spoken to a professor when has been an intelligence as set for various government agencies. that shows the depth of the investigation that was going on in 2016. not enough was known at this point to know whether that was done appropriately or inappropriately. that's what members of congress are acting here. this situation coming to a head at this meeting with deputy general rosenstein. >> rick: you think a probe of the doj/fbi would in any way undermine or affected the russia investigation? >> whether it would affect the actual investigation remains to be scene. the battle playing out now is the battle for public opinion. influencing people whether they think this mueller investigation

is appropriate or not. a second investigation into the mueller investigation might influence more people to think maybe it's inappropriate. so again, yeah, we'll see what happens. >> rick: the other big headline over the weekends, rudy guliani suggesting the president will sit down face-to-face with bob mueller sometime over the summer likely in july. >> that would be an incredible event. i would caution that rudy guliani added the qualifier that he wants the interview to be tied to a september 1 end date for the mueller problem. i don't think that that is something that robert mueller would be interested in. so that might be a significant road block. he's advised the president against sitting down for that interview. >> rick: we've heard that from a lot of lawyers that said don't sit down because these investigations swerve off topic. >> that's right. if the president makes any kind of false statements or

skeptical this will work. >> yes, especially those part of the iran nuclear deal. they wanted the united states to stay in the agreement and build on it. boris johnson is the u.k.'s foreign secretary and he spoke before the secretary of state did it and said that ballistic missile, iran's behavior, their disruntsive activity, nuclear activity. if you try to pull those in a giant negotiation, a jumbo iran negotiation a new treaty, that seems to be what they envision. i don't see that being very easy to achieve in anything like a reasonable time scale. the british and other countries are trying to stay in the iran deal, salvage it, trying to work with iran on this. iran's foreign minister said that this is a sham to regress old habits. policies dictated by special corrupt interests and repeats the same wrong choices and will have the same ill rewards. iran is looking for partners in

negotiate. he said president trump reserves the right to slap those tariffs back on if talks with china break down. analysts say there's a sense of relief in the markets today. let's take a look at the dow, which just dipped below 25,000 but up 265 points at this minute. edward lawrence from the fox business network is live. good to see you. the markets love this. >> yeah, rick, this put a calm in the markets. markets hate uneasiness. this is a major driving force for the games today. if we get an agreement with china, that means china would agree to reduce the deficit with the u.s. they're not going to cut. they said they're going to buy more u.s. products, more jobs, more money with companies and business. also, putting a halt on the trade war has also taken out the uneasiness in the market with -- there could be a tit for tat sort of tariff on either side, which could hurt both markets.

however, commerce secretary wilbur ross said it would hurt china more than a trade war would with the u.s. >> rick: the two sides saying they made progress? >> yeah. a big leap forward with the negotiatio negotiations. they moved over to a frame work for the deal. under the frame work, china agrees to buy more u.s. products and reducing the deficit. they're going to make meaningful increases in agriculture and exports in energy. the chinese will add amendments to laws to protect intellectual property of companies. the frame work encourages a two-way investment that strives to create a fair and level field. the talks will continue next week in china. the representative will be the commerce secretary wilbur ross. now, the attention to detail is very important for the negotiations going forward. the chinese love the fine print.

weapons as part of any deal and pyongyang officials say they plan to destroy the country's nuclear testing facility this week. analysts warn we've heard that from north korea many times before. let's bring in tara maller and a former military analyst at the cia. thanks for being here. >> thanks for having me. >> rick: kim threatened to pull out last week. back maybe? >> the president has says if it doesn't look like it's going in the direction of the united states, he will pull out. the summit could be in jeopardy. you're seeing posturing by both sides here. hopefully things will go smoothly and hopefully the united states will go it in prepared. what we don't want is for something to sort of go the wrong direction before we etch get to the table and we don't

want the meeting to go poorly or we're really in a worse off place than where we are right now. >> rick: one thing that has remained consistent, everybody is preaching skepticism. >> absolutely. there's reasons to be cautious. you want parties to be talking and diplomacy to have a chance. with the north koreans, we've seen this before. we've seen them make claims about compromises they might be willing to make and we've seen them back off from those claims. we've seen that the united states and the north koreans have very different perceptions and definitions about what denuclearization entails. i think the united states needs to make sure that when it goes into this summit, that president trump knows the ins and outs of the north korean nuclear program and know what's the united states is and is not willing to budge on in any sorts of compromise. we don't want an agreement reached that can be backed up by either party or with the support of our allies. >> we've seen good will

gestures. releasing three captive americans and then apparently going to allow journalists into that test site. of course, journalists are not inspectors. so will they know what to look for when they get in there? >> you raise two good points there. we've seen the conciliatory measures before, which really important in the lead up to the summit to show good faith from both sides. having said that, the north koreans could flip this on the united states and say what has the united states given us. we made these two gestures. on the second gesture, which is coming this week, the destroying of the nuclear facility, the underground facility, you're right. they're letting journalists in but they're not letting in the experts. the people to really know if everything we think is being destroyed is actually being destroyed. north koreans are known to cheat in the past and be deceptive when it comes to their nuclear

to say. there might very well be some destroyed capacity this week, but they have other sites and this is not really a significant portion of their nuclear program at large. >> rick: as you said, denuclearization is the goal. is there any other possible outcome that might satisfy if the -- the u.s.? >> sure. i don't think you're going to see a scenario where they agree to give up everything in an exchange that would be satisfactory. you could see a timetable with a phased denuclearization. so denuclearization would be the final result. in the shorter term, there might be more specific and verifying confidence building measures like the destruction of certain missiles that could reach the united states or the shutting down of certain facilities. this would be towards the ultimate goal of denuclearization. frankly what the united states

is aiming for. just a matter of a timetable and what we're willing to give up. and what we're willing to give up -- >> rick: this is a historic sit down. the first between a sitting president and a leader of north korea. many are crediting president trump's personality and unpredictability to forcing kim to the meeting. now you have the two strong personalities in the room and i wonder if that helps or hurts with an agreement. >> i think it can cut both ways. high risk, high reward potential but high risk and very low reward if not extremely high cost potential in this case. you have two volatile unpredictable personalities that have never met before in an extremely high stakes summit. everything could go smoothly in the photo open sense but that begs the question what happens when the summit is over and details get worked out.

all might be fine in front of the camera and hand shakes and things might seem rosy. in four or five or six months we don't seep this coming together in terms of the instrumental frame work on paper being carried out by officials in north korea and here with verification measures, then the meeting is just a meeting. so i want to be optimistic. i want to believe we can reach a positive conclusion if not a positive development here. i mean, the worst case scenario here is for something to go wrong in the meeting or in the lead up to the meeting. then you might see them resume missile testing like they were five, six, seven months ago. anything can happen. >> rick: anything can happen. thanks, tara. >> thank you. >> former kohl's president don blankenship says he's still running. a spokesman said he will run as

down, chisel it away or pave over it. the main concern moving forward would have to be how unpredictable this volcano is. you'll have a fissure open up, there's lava and then another explosion. >> we hope the flows keeps as a release point to allow the lava to enter the ocean without damaging any further residences. we know it's unpredictable. a lot of pressure in the rift zone. we know it could change at any point in time. >> one other point that i want to make is, there's been some questions to us about whether or not it's safe to travel for -- to hawaii for vacations. the county's mayor tells us that hawaii is open for business. this volcano is impacting a small fraction of the island. they're telling people to come out, it's not impacting air travel either.
