see it. thanks for joining us. busy news day. more to come the rest of the week. now you're going to have a treat. trace gallagher is in for shep. >> a live look at the white house. the briefing set to start any minute now. president trump raising questions whether the meeting with kim jong-un will happen. the president meeting with south korean's leader after the north korean dictator threatened to call off the summit. the white house getting ready to host a highly classified briefing on russian investigation. democrats demanding to be there. some republicans calling for a second special counsel to investigate misconduct by the fbi and doj. plus, the father of the suspect in the texas high school massacre says his son is also a victim. that's all ahead in this hour.
12:01 pm
good afternoon. i'm trace gallagher. sarah sanders is expected to take the podium any moment now. we're hoping to here more about the meeting with president trump and kim jong-un. >> we'll see what happens, whether or not it happens. if it does, it will be a great thing for north korea. if it doesn't, that's okay, too. whatever it is, it is. >> trace: the president made those comments with south korean president moon last week. north korea cancelled the talks with the south and threatened to call off the meeting with the president. first the joint military exercises were blamed. and then kim said he didn't want one-sided talks about giving up
12:02 pm
nukes. and then he said the remarks from john bolton would use the libya model with north korea. moammar qaddafi gave up his nuclear program and then rebels ousted him and killed him. vice president pence told fox news that kim will only end up like qaddafi if he doesn't make a deal. president trump would be the first sitting president to meet with a north korean leader. president trump was asked if he has confidence in rod rosenstein. he said the south korean president doesn't want to hear these answers. first, to the chief white house correspondent john roberts. he's live at the white house. john? >> trace, good afternoon to you. when we were in the oval office, president trump said what do you think about north korea? i said you know better than i
12:03 pm
would. he said he thought it was a coin toss. i asked him again whether he thought it was a coin toss. he thought it was 50/50 whether or not it would happen. the president has said in the past that maybe it will happen, maybe it won't. he seemed to go further down the road today of saying this thing may not happen, at least not on june 12. maybe some time later. it's still in the presidentest interest to keep kim moving toward the table, which is why he again today reiterated that he plans on giving kim security guarantees, personally guaranteeing that he will stay in power. south korea and china are prepared to inject massive amounts of money to north korea to turn the money around. the bottom line is, sounds like the president is guaranteeing the style of regime that the kims have pursued for decades could remain in place if there's economic reforms. there's korean reunification. the south and the north have talked about it. the south wanting to reunify the
12:04 pm
peninsula as a capitalist society. north korea wanting to reunify it under its own vision. i asked the president. >> you'll start off with two koreas and then it will be up to them whether or not they get together. i see two koreas and ultimately in the future, not now, but some day they get together and you'll get back to one korea. >> president trump said after that that he would like to see korea reunify. he said only if they want to do it. saying the united states certainly wouldn't try to impose its will or its vision on the two koreas. president trump was rather sharp in his displeasure with the meeting that kim jong-un had with president xi may 8. the president said he saw a notable change in kim's posture towards a summit after that meeting saying i didn't like what i saw there. so that was a direct message to
12:05 pm
both xi jinping and kim jong-un to say no more meetings like that before june. the president saying xi jinping is a world class poker player and if given the reverse role, he probably would have done the same thing. trace? >> yeah, and separately, john, president trump commenting on a report that an fbi informant talked to some members of his campaign. >> yeah, yesterday he called a snap meeting with rod rosen stein and chris wray, the fbi director to tell them point blank, you're going to provide congressional investigators with the documents they want in terms of what led up to the fisa request to start surveilling members of the president's campaign. he instructed john kelly to get together with the doj, the fbi,the director of national intelligence and congressional investigators like trey gowdy and devin nunes and give them everything that they want. the president also very strong today about the idea that there was an fbi informant that is
12:06 pm
trying to infiltrate his campaign. listen here. >> if they had spies in my campaign, that would be a disgrace to this country. that would be one of the biggest insults that anyone has ever seen and very illegal aside from everything else. it would maybe probably every political event ever look like small potatoes. hopefully -- i think the department of justice wants to get down to it. congress does, too. >> sources that i talked to this morning don't have high hopes for a meeting with the doj, the fbi in terms of getting access to the documents. they hope john kelly will have the sway to get those documents out. they say this just might be another way for the doj to stonewall them. trace? >> trace: john roberts live. we'll go back when the briefing begins. thank you. north korea said they're shutting down a nuclear test site and bringing in foreign journalists to watch. this could be for show.
12:07 pm
scientists say the site collapsed on its own and may already be useless. this is a view of the facility simple space provided by digital globe. we're expecting the north koreans to blow up the side of a mountain and seal some tunnels. there's word we could see video of the demolition tomorrow morning that depends on the weather. greg palkot is live in seoul, south korea with more. greg? >> trace, probably the best sign about whether there are any serious bumps in u.s.-north korea diplomacy could be found right here, right now. it's all about dismemberment, the destruction of that north korean nuclear test site in the northeastern corner of the country. this had been planned a couple weeks ago, before the recent diplomatic turbulence. north korea flew a small group
12:08 pm
of hand-picked international journalists to an east coast city in the country. they were supposed to be on a train right now. so far they haven't left. so far the reason given is weather. it's been damp here. whether the regime is now having second thoughts about going through with this, that is the question. as you noted, trace, this is an easy give for north korea. many scientists said that basically this site was out of order. that you couldn't use it again. it didn't merely matter whether it was destroyed. but trace, huge symbolic value. will north korea squander this if the date of the summit is now in play. back to nuclear site? >> yeah, south korea, of course, trace, is watching this very closely. watching everything very closely. they have a humongous amount invested in this whole diplomatic process.
12:09 pm
if you remember back to april 27, that's when kim jong-un and south korean president moon met along the dmz. just last week, as you noted, talks between north and south were cancelled. ostensively because of ongoing but they knew about them exercises between u.s. and south korean troops around this peninsula. also, there's more strong winds coming from the white house about denuclearization. here we've been listening to more strong winds coming from the north. an old line from kim jong-un. that is why according to local media here, president moon went to the d.c. to speak with president trump to do a little bit of damage control. it all goes down, trace, to one man. again, it seems according to a couple of analysts we've talked to here, kim jong-un. he's about 120 miles north of here in pyongyang and wants again, again, according to some of the experts, he's calling the shots for better or for worse for this country, for this peninsula. a lot of people think for the
12:10 pm
worst. back to you. >> trace: greg palkot live in seoul. what is now early morning. thank you. let's bring in gordon chang, author of "nuclear show down, north korea takes on the world." gordon, great to see you. you watch this news conference with president trump and president moon. you have two difference takes. you have trump saying, i don't know about this. i'm not sure. if it happens at all. it seems to me like south korea really wants to push this thing across the finish line. >> certainly does. you've seen from south korean official that's met with president trump on march 8 and you've heard from the south korean president, president moon, relaying his conversations with kim jong-un. the south koreans want a good atmosphere so there will be peace on the peninsula. many people say they have been exaggerating what kim jong-un has actually said to them.
12:11 pm
from my perspective, the most important thing is not what kim wants but what is president trump willing to do to get north koreans to do what they want to do. >> trace: yeah, that's the important thing. greg palkot said all eyes 120 miles to the north and what is kim jong-un going to do. you say no, no, it's not what about kim jong-un will do. it's about what president trump will do. you think at this point in time, president trump holds all the cards. >> he holds the cards. the north koreans need sanction relief. u.s. sanctions and u.n. sanctions are crimping the money flow. kim does not want the united states to strike his nuke and missile facilities. so a lot of things that we can do to crimp even more, the flow of money to north korea and we still have started -- have not started putting pressure on his big power sponsors, russian and china. we do that, there's no money going into north korea at all. this is a question of trump. it's not a question of what kim
12:12 pm
wants. >> nobody knows history of this peninsula better than you do, gordon. i want you take. when president trump says the june 12 date might not happen, it might slide, you look at the history and the naysayers. it seems to me like if june 12 doesn't happen, there's no do-overs. it's not just going to be pushed to the fall or winter. this is done. if it's not going to happen june 12, it might not happen at all. is that fair? >> no, if it doesn't happen on june 1,2 it could be july 12, august 12. there's a lot of preparations. a lot of it has not been agreements on the logistical issue, this could be later. got to remember, march 8, president trump told the south koreans that he expected the meeting with kim to be held in the month of may. clearly that's passed. so just because it's not going to be june doesn't mean it's never going to happen. >> trace: i'll take your word.
12:13 pm
is it going to happen? is it going to happen june 12 or some time in the near future? >> yeah, i think so. kim wants to meet a sitting american president. he wants to do it. >> trace: thanks, gordon. great insight. >> thanks, trace. >> trace: meantime, coming up, the plan to keep foreign governments from meddling in the mid-term elections. moscow may not be the only trouble maker. ahead, the homeland security secretary on who we should be watching. we're waiting for the white house briefing to begin at any moment. we haven't had one since thursday. haven't heard anything from sarah sanders since this dust-up with north korea happened. we will have that right here on fox news channel and we're following breaking news out of florida. we'll get you up to speed on that coming up. a very minor fender bender tonight in an unreasonably narrow fast food drive thru lane.
12:14 pm
but what a powerful life lesson. and don't worry i have everything handled. i already spoke to our allstate agent, and i know that we have accident forgiveness. which is so smart on your guy's part. like fact that they'll just... forgive you... four weeks without the car. okay, yup. good night. with accident forgiveness your rates won't go up just because of an accident. switching to allstate is worth it.
12:16 pm
>> trace: we're following breaking news out of panama city. police have surrounded a bank and apartment building after witnesses reported hearing 50 gun shots in the area. nearby schools and a grocery store are evacuated. it's unclear if the suspect is inside this apartment complex or what his intent is. according to sheriff of a nearby county, the situation is somehow related to a suspicious death in santa rosa beach, which is about 30 miles away from panama city. we're keeping an eye on this and
12:17 pm
we'll bring you any new details as we get them. and we've been waiting for the white house briefing. here's sarah sanders. >> including scheduled u.s.-north korea summit. both leaders are committed to working together to accomplish the common goal of complete denuclearization of the peninsula. as you know, it's commencement season and the president and first lady would like to extend congratulations to bob barger. bob graduated from the university of toledo. this month after a review of his transcripts from the 1940s showed he completed enough courses to qualify for an associates degree. as the president said in his letter to bob, his hard work, diligence and passion to learn exemplified the greater generations commitment to excellence and the american spirit. the president took a number of questions earlier. we'll keep this short. i'll get started.
12:18 pm
>> do you agree with the south korean official that said there's a 99% chance that this summit will go on? >> the president addressed this earlier directly to you and said that we'll see what happens. we continue to prepare for the summit. if they want to meet, we'll be ready. the president i think rightly stated that north korea commits to denuclearize, it will be a bright feature for them. we continue to prepare and see what happens. >> what conditions does he have? what does he see that the north koreans have to do to make the trip? i'm asking, the challenge -- was it premature to make the points commemorating the summit? >> the first part, the president
12:19 pm
laid out what he wants to see as a commitment to denuclearization. that's not changed. in terms of the coins, the white house doesn't have anything to do with it, the designs, the manufacturer, the process in any capacity. this is a standard procedure by the white house communications agency that is made up of career military officials and the coins are designed and done by that organization. >> why does the u.s. guarantee the safety of a dictator and after his responsibility for the death of a college student? >> the goal and purpose of the conversations is to have complete and total denuclearization of the peninsula. the president has been up front about that. we're going to continue to move forward. >> really quickly -- >> we're going to be short
12:20 pm
today. major? >> you talked about preparations for the summit. can you describe how the president himself is personally preparing, what does he work with, how many time does he give to preparing for this summit? >> as you know, he spends a significant amount of time meeting in person and having regular phone conversations with other world leaders like you saw today, south korean president moon as well as meetings with his national security team, this is something they talk about daily and will continue to in preparation. jordan? >> thanks. i want to ask about this meeting with lawmakers about documents about the russian investigation. can you say what specific documents the lawmakers will see? the chairman has requested all documents.
12:21 pm
will he see them? >> that's something that you have to ask the department of justice. the president asked chief of staff kelly to set up the meeting. it's scheduled to take place on thursday of this week. the individuals that are expected to attend are chairman nunes, chairman gowdy, fbi director wray, director coats and ed o'callahan. blake? >> the north koreans are bringing in journalists to view what they say is the dismantling of a nuclear test side. isn't that site damaged already and does the administration have a comment? >> i don't have a comment at this point. >> can you tell us what was the outcome of the discussions between the south korean president and president trump today about the size and cost of u.s. troops in south korea?
12:22 pm
>> the focus at least in the meeting that was in did not come up. certainly conversations centered around preparations towards the scheduled summit. >> you said that no one from the white house staff will attend the meeting thursday. does that mean that the chief of staff kelly would not attend -- >> he's charged with coordinating and making sure it takes place. he's not expected to attend. >> can you respond to why no democrats would be at that meeting if the white house is putting it together? the democrats say it's inappropriate to have a meeting set up with just republicans and the justice department. the white -- would the white house welcome democrats to be there? >> we'll keep you posted. my understanding isn't they haven't been the one requesting the information. >> i think they -- they say to the extent the white house is brokering a deal between the justice department and the --
12:23 pm
>> i hardly call broker a deal to help coordinate a meeting and help congress receive information that they have requested. to my knowledge, the democrats have not requested that information. so i would refer you back to them on why they would consider themselves randomly invited to see something they have never asked to. jeff? >> the president spoke at length about his vision for a solution to dealing with chinese company zte. republicans and democrats are criticizing that. i understand he's bowing to pressure from beijing. what is your response? >> the u.s. and chinese relationship has a number of issues that we're having conversations, national security trade, zte is among one of them, this is something that the president has asked commerce to look into. he's outlined possible actions against zte by commerce. at this point, they're still in
12:24 pm
discussion and there's nothing else to add. beyond what the president already said. >> can you respond to what he said? >> like i said before, senator schumer is not somebody that this white house will ever take advice from on how to negotiate or get a good deal on anything based on his track record and his weakness when it comes to china. we finally have a president that is actually calling out china on their unfair trade practices and not just calling them out but actually doing something about it. and aggressively pushing forward in negotiations. something we haven't seen in decades. senator schumer is probably the last one we would call on to make a deal. anita? >> i wanted to change topics. i want your comment on this incident that happened at the epa earlier today. they were having a national summit on water contaminants. at least two reporters were barred from going into the event and one was forcibly removed.
12:25 pm
i wonder if you had a comment and do you approve of how that was handled? >> we'll look into the matter. i know epa has put out a statement. at this point i'd refer you to them. i don't have a lot of visibility since certainly we weren't there and we're in other meetings here. something we're certainly going to look into. at this point, i'd refer you to the statement of the epa. i can't speak to it. i would refer you to their statement. >> back to north korea. the president said that he was disappointed that after his second meeting with xi jinping, kim jong-un had a different attitude. is a chinaer a spoiler and why? >> the president spoke to this directly. nothing else to add. mike? >> can you add anything more about the president's comments
12:26 pm
in he said south korea and china and japan were willing to invest large sums of money in north korea is. the u.s. planning to add to that very large sum? can you describe what kind of money he's talking about there? >> i don't have anything to add beyond the president's comments. >> can you talk at all about what president moon said about the new tenor coming out of pyongyang? what president trump learned in the meeting with president moon? >> we felt like the conversations today were productive and again we're going to continue in preparation and see what happens. >> to follow up on anita and a question to you. is there any situation barring a security incident in which you feel, the white house feels it's appropriately able to touch -- >> i'm not going to way in to random hypotheticals that may or may not exist. i don't know any information about this specific incident. you're asking me to speak to a blanket possibility, which i'm not going to do or ask for you
12:27 pm
to do. john? sorry. one question at a time today. we are short on time. john? sorry. john, go ahead. >> thank you, sarah. there's been considerable discussion back and forth about the tenure of speaker ryan, whether he will relinquish his gavel early and have a new speaker before the elections. conservative lawmakers made it clear that they want ryan to stay. congressman warren davidson said that is unfair to the new members coming in. and he also said that there should be a discharge position so members can have an up and down vote on repeal of the affordable care act and immigration. does the president agree? >> i haven't spoken with him about that statement.
12:28 pm
so i wouldn't want to wage into that right now. john? >> thanks. the president earlier today in that press conference talked about the protections that he's prepared to offer to kim jong-un, not only personally but also for his country. in preparing for these meetings and when the summit takes place, does human rights play any consideration in the meeting that the president will have with kim jong-un? >> i'm not going to get ahead of the discussion that the president and kim jong-un would have. certainly we expect that to come up and be addressed. >> following up on john's earlier questions. does the president back speaker ryan's decision to stay in office until after the election or is he concerned that there's a period of time when he's not getting as much done as he could? serving as a lame duck speaker? >> at this point, that's something for speaker ryan and members of congress to make that determination, not something that the white house has weighed
12:29 pm
into. franchesca? >> we heard from president trump before that meeting with president moon. after sitting down with him, doesn't trump feel more like the summit is worth having and that it will happen? what is the white house's drop dead date before deciding whether or not to do to the summit? >> again, we're going to continue to prepare and see what happens. there's nothing beyond that. one last question. ben? >> thank you. i wanted to ask about gaza. the violence continued today. does the white house have any plans to meet with the palestinian authorities? >> there's no scheduled meetings. if something changes, we'll let you know. thanks so much. have a great day. >> sarah sanders said at the outside it would be quick and it was. i didn't have a stop watch but maybe in the vicinity of 12, 13 minutes. that was fairly fast. talked about north korea and is there a drop dead and will there
12:30 pm
be dangling from china, japan, south korean and the united states to get this june 12 thing to go forward. they mentioned the meeting thursday now. apparently the schedule is set for thursday on what documents republicans want and will get from concerning this whole spying allegation coming out of the white house. we want to bring in john roberts. when sarah sanders was asked, john, whether they were brokering a deal. she said we're trying to get documents that republicans have requested and now we're getting a better idea thanks to you on the schedule of what will happen on thursday. >> yeah, it's going to happen thursday. couldn't get an answer on when it will happen. but i'll let you in on something funny. i said sarah -- and i get an answer from siri. i got an answer from my iphone.
12:31 pm
we do know it will happen thursday. probably at the doj and devin nunes, the chairman of the house intelligence committee, trey gowdy as well as ed o'callahan, rod rosenstein's deputy, christopher wray and dan coats, the director of national intelligence. i was talking with sources this morning, trace, and they are concerned that the doj is just going to use this as a method to stonewall the release of any of these documents. i was told there was enthusiasm that john kelly will be there. now we learned that kelly won't be at these meetings. he's merely facilitating the meeting between the doj and the congressional investigators. he won't actually be in the room to say no, listen, the president said do this so you need to do it. i don't think there's a lot of hope from congressional investigators that this is really going to be very satisfying to them. trace? >> trace: when you heard that that john kelly would be there and no democrats, surprising to
12:32 pm
you or is that standard operating procedure? >> not a surprise that the democrats wouldn't be there. it was a surprise john kelly won't be there. congressional investigators were enthusiastic about the idea of john kelly in the room with the power of the president behind him and his well known ability to twist arms to say to the doj, to the fbi look, the president said they need to look at them, they have a right to look at them. make it happen. so with kelly not there, now it's just an argument between gowdy, nunes and the representatives of the doj and the fbi. so they would probably be more pessimistic about this meeting than a few hours ago. >> trace: yeah, i want to touch on north korea with you again. there were some questions on that. seems to be the intimation from a lot of the white house news corps that there needs to be
12:33 pm
some dangling that needs to happen here, whether it comes from south korea, japan, china, the united states. more to sweeten the pot for kim jong-un to really make it happen. is that your assessment of what is going on there? >> i think what the president sees as a problem is there was that may 8 meeting between president xi jinping. the president said after that meeting he noticed something different. he probably said you might need more guarantees. that's why the president is saying, look, we'll guarantee the safety of your regime, the safety of your country, guarantee your economic development, we will put money into it, maybe not the united states, but other countries and that you have a very promising future if you give up your nuclear program. the president saying he does have a set of conditions before
12:34 pm
the sit-down. this really seemed aimed at kim jong-un to say, there's a lot waiting for you on the table. all you have to do is come to the table. >> trace: john roberts live for us. thank you. i want to bring in ken thomas, a white house reporter for the associated press. i'm not sure if you followed that back and forth with john roberts there. so the meeting is now set for thursday. we don't have a time. siri was giving john roberts a time on the phone. we don't have a time yet. we know that general john kelly will not be there, which is somewhat of a surprise. >> yeah, i thought that was interesting, too. the white house seems to be distancing itself a little bit from this meeting. they're saying that john kelly will take the role in a ranging the meeting thursday but won't participate. there won't be white house officials there. they identified some of the members of congress, trey gowdy, devin nunes and other officials that will be there. the white house is not
12:35 pm
specifically going to be in that one. >> so not brokering a deal. sarah sanders was very adamant about that. this is not about brokering a deal on what documents we get, this is about facilitating the documents that the republicans have asked for. the question is, what are they getting? john roberts was intimating this would be a stonewalling on behalf of the doj. >> yes. we saw house members calling for an investigation into the investigation. they have a lot of questions about the process. this can be viewed though as the white house, you know, trying to create some questions about this investigation. we've had mike pence recently say that, you know, this is an investigation that should wrap up. rudy guliani said if the president were to sit down with an interview, perhaps this could wrap up by september 1. so this is all about maybe
12:36 pm
creating political doubts out there among the public on, you know, how this investigation was conducted and what it might lead to in the end. >> yep. the flip side you have democrats saying when you talk about this informant in the trump campaign saying look, the trump campaign does not have any right to learn anything about that. the fbi has every right to use that. you have a couple of different strong arguments. ken thomas with the associated press. thanks very much. >> thanks, trace. >> trace: well, the trump administration doing everything they can to prevents another country from meddling in the 2018 mid-terms. that's what the homeland security secretary said after briefing lawmakers on election security. some democrats have questioned whether the administration is doing enough after u.s. intelligence agencies determined that russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election. the kremlin continues to deny it. kirstjen nielsen says russia is
12:37 pm
not the only country to watch. >> we think about china, iran, russia. we continue the watch. any nation that has the capability, we would be naive if we made an assumption. we need to be prepared. >> trace: secretary nielsen says she doesn't think president calling the russian investigation a witch hunt is hurting the message that election security needs to be taken seriously. peter doocy is life with more. peter? >> trace, every member of the house of representatives was invited to this classified briefing about a serve that everybody talks about. election interference. but only about one in ten lawmakers actually showed up. >> 40 or so members that attended. >> that doesn't suggest that your colleagues are taking it that seriously. >> no. first of all, there's been different committees that have had briefings on this topic. >> one lawmaker that did not
12:38 pm
attend told me it was because the briefing was at 8:00 a.m. too early. the briefers were the law enforcement and intelligence chief in terms of helping states secure their elections. the states control their own elections. the chairman of the homeland security committee says they hope they do. >> our concern is that not on russia but possibly the other foreign adversaries are now going to start looking at how they can meddle in the mid-terms. we need to be prepared. we were caught off guard last time. >> secretary nielsen sid that the trump administration is taking this issue very seriously, trace. >> trace: peter, what did she say about the threats to the mid-terms? >> i asked her in the kind of interference if they're worried about in 2018 is similar to 2016? there's a lot of social media manipulation but no ballots being changed that we know of. this is what she said. >> i think we remain concerned,
12:39 pm
certainly on the influence side. we've seen that continually as you know, whether it's after events in syria or after events in england recently. we see that continuing. so the fbi will continue to hunker down on that. >> nielson dismissed the intel community's conclusion that the kremlin was interfering in 2016 to help trump beat clinton because she says the evidence shows the russians were playing both sides. trace? >> trace: peter doocy live for us. some house republicans pushing for a second special counsel to investigate the fbi and justice department. we're live on capitol hill with details on their demands and reaction from a top democrat. come here, babe.
12:40 pm
12:41 pm
12:42 pm
12:43 pm
forward today. a group of conservative lawmakers introduced a resolution to do that. they say americans deserve an independent investigation into how the feds handled three big issues. surveillance warrants, the clinton e-mail problem and the origins of the trump russia investigation. >> if justice department cannot be expected to investigate itself. as the resolution station, the concerns of the american people are serious and the issues require an unbiassed and thorough investigation are broad. >> trace: critics say a special counsel will interfere with robert mueller's investigation. remember, he's looking into whether the trump campaign colluded with russian and whether the trump administration conspired with firing james comey. mike emanuel is live on the us on capitol hill. do we know if house members will vote on this? >> trace, it's not entirely clear this will come up for a vote. it's not clear that it would pass.
12:44 pm
there are some lawmakers that are uneasy of turning another special counsel loose. the draft resolution as written says "there's an urgent need for the appointment of a second special counsel in light of evidence that raises critical concerns about decision, activities and inherent bias displayed at the fbi and the highest levels of the department of justice." today key republicans issued this call. >> we're supposed to believe the department of justice can handle this? don't worry, we can handle this. truth us. we'll be fine. really? >> what has been said is dynamite. this is scandal of our time. perhaps a scandal of our lifetime. >> in this election year, this is an issue that fires up the base. if there's any concern about an enthusiasm gap, this fires up the president's supporters. trace? >> trace: yeah, they're fired up. any reaction from democrats or
12:45 pm
the doj? >> no official comment from the doj. a senior doj official notes that a second special counsel would still be reporting to deputy a.g. rod rosenstein. so in effect, this would still be the department of justice investigating itself. other democrats are expressing the concern that these attacks on doj are damaging. >> trace: mike emanuel live for us on capitol hill. we have mike pompeo speaking right now. let's listen. >> there's still remains a great deal of work to do. you should know i am committed to that and we will get there. we lifted the hiring freeze. we can here the most talented person, including family members here. things that weren't possible when i arrived. we made substantial progress in some of or senior level processes so that we can get our ambassadors here work in the building. nothing to report just yet.
12:46 pm
as i committed when i gave testify in my confirmation hearing, we're going to flood the zone, work on this diligently. one of my highest priorities to make sure that we have the right people in the right places every place in the world so we can accomplish our diplomatic mission. i hope in the coming week or two to have several announcements about who some of the new senior leaders will be. second, i left the white house. i was in bilateral meetings with the south koreans. they were constructive. i think sanders has given a press conference. i'm happy to take questions. suffice it to say, we're continuing to prepare our team and the white house so that in the event that the summit takes place june 12, we're fully prepared. with the mission statement that it didn't change at all. we're committed to achieving
12:47 pm
denuclearization and creating conditions such that the north korean regime no longer threatens the world. final thought. i gave some remarks yesterday on the president's strategy with respect to the islamic republic of iran. and i think it's important that i reemphasize that the tasks that iran needs to undertake aren't that difficult. i've seen reports that these are a fantasy and they can't happen. but we ask for things that are really very simple. most nations in the world engage in them. we ask them to stop firing missiles into riyadh. this is not a fantasy to imagine the iranians making a decision not to fire missiles into another nation and threatening american lives. the travel through that airport. it's not a fantasy to ask them to cease engaging in terror.
12:48 pm
these were all demands. the demands we put on the rest of the world. if it was the case that some other country in the middle east desired to build a nuclear weapon, we would work to stop them, too. these are a set of simple requirements that the iranian regime could quite easily supply with and it would benefit the iranian people to an enormous extent. so frankly what we laid out seemed like a pretty straightforward set of requirements that we would put on any country in the world. to stop malign behavior that threatens other of its neighbors and other parts of the world. with that, i'm happy to take a couple questions. matt? >> good to see you. just on north korea and the
12:49 pm
meetings today. we don't -- we have just met, so i don't know if you're a betting man. if you were a betting man, what would you say the odds are for this meeting actually coming off at the date and venue that's been set and if it -- are you prepared to go back or meet again wherever with kim jong-un if that is decided -- if that is necessary to actually fully prepare for a summit? >> i will take your second question first. we will do -- we will do what it takes to make sure this is a successful meeting, whether that is meeting in some other country or whatever. we're prepared. the president will ask us to ensure that we've done all we can to ensure that we have the real opportunity to have this historic successful outcome. i'm not a betting man. i wouldn't care to predict whether it was happens.
12:50 pm
only to predict that we'll be ready in the event it does. >> mr. secretary, thanks very much. there's reports that when you met with kim jong-un, you were looking at a sunset and he allegedly said wouldn't it be great if there were american hotels lining the scene. do you believe that he's open to the idea of american investment in north korea and can you also give us your thoughts on what would explain the change in tone from north korea? the president said he thought china had something to do with this. >> you mean the tone this past week? no, i -- i'm not going to talk about that, speculate about that. we're preparing, continuing to do our work and lay the foundation for a successful meeting. i'm confident we'll get there. with respect to chairman kim, i haven't spoken publicly about the conversations we've had.
12:51 pm
they were between he and i. do have a real sense that he would find american investment, american technology of real value to his people and something that he and i had a chance to speak about generally. i do think it's something that if we get this right and we get denuclearization right that america would be quite capable of delivering them with lots of things that would make life better for the north korean people. >> the south korean government today put the chances at -- we're not talking specific numbers. they put it at 99%. >> i heard that. 99. >> is there something that gave president trump pause in direct conversations that this government has had with the north koreans and how would you describe since you've left pyongyang what kind of
12:52 pm
communication the united states has had with the government of north korea? >> yeah, i won't character size that. chairman kim asked for this meaning. we worked to get the date and location set. since then, we're driving on. it's clear we're working to make sure there's a common understanding of what the contents of what will be discussed. i'm optimistic. again, this could be something that comes to the end and doesn't happen. as the president said we'll see. that's the place we find ourselves. >> the president said that the summit might be delayed. are you discussing now the possible new date or it being delayed with the north koreans? what are the issues that prevent it to be on june 12? are there logistical or things you want to discuss with them? >> we're still working towards
12:53 pm
june 12. >> but you're discussing this with them? >> we're working towards june 12. if i could turn to i ran. you talked about this unprecedented financial pressure you want to bear on iran. your critics when they bring up the idea of a fantasy, they say it's because the europeans won't go along with you on these sanctions and you can't recreate this tremendous financial pressure. what do you say to those critics? how do you get the europeans to go along and others like china or russia that continues to abite by the agreement? >> it's straightforward, this is a global challenge. i mentioned in my remarks yesterday, could force assassinations in european country, this is a shared threat across the world. i'm confident that we can collectively develop a diplomatic response achieve the
12:54 pm
simple outcomes we put forward. we wouldn't tolerate iceland doing what the iranians are doing. we won't tolerate chad doing what the -- pick a number. i'm tripping through the alphabet. we wouldn't tolerate another neighbors behaving with terrorist activity in proxy forces that threaten americans in iraq. the list is long. we wouldn't tolerate that, right? if somebody else created an equivalent of hezbollah, we would sit by? neither would the europeans. russian and china don't see that as a positive impact around the world either. i'm confident there's a set of overlapping values and interests here that will drive us to the same conclusion about the need to respond to iran's threats of the world. >> if we could go back to the president's comments today
12:55 pm
discussing china. he caused some alarm when he spoke about xi's second meeting with kim jong-un. do you know any more about that meeting and why the chinese were helpful in that meeting? >> i don't have anything to add to what the president said there. >> are the chinese helping push forward with the summit? >> the chinese have historic assistance in the pressure campaign. literally historic assistance. president trump has made clear and i've made clear, too, that it's incredibly central that that pressure remain in place and china continue in that pressure campaign. we have every reason to expect they will do so. >> president rouhani said yes that he questioned who are you
12:56 pm
to tell another nation what to do with foreign policy. so who are you to tell them what to do, what response dow to him? >> yeah, i didn't see those remarks. the iranian people get to choose. the iranian people get to choose for themselves the kind of leadership they want, the government they want. they get to choose the individuals that lead their country and then they get to live with the choices that those leaders make. i wasn't describing what mr. rouhani should do or what mr. zarif should do. i was only articulating what america intends to do. >> thank you, mr. secretary. my questions that iranian hostages. the government is working hard to bring the hostages home. can you tell us what efforts are
12:57 pm
underway given the frosty relations? >> one might have two months ago described the united states and north korea frosty. we returned three americans. we almost always have our citizens detained to us that are not friendly to us. we work to find mechanisms that deliver these important outcomes. i talked to many. i know how central that is. the entire united states government works diligently to bring each -- i mentioned a handful of names yesterday. there are more around the world. i didn't identify them yesterday. you should know we're working diligently along every avenue that we can develop to get these folks returned back home. back to their families. one more. >> thanks. i'm trying to make this worth our time. >> that would be useful.
12:58 pm
>> the demands or whatever you want to call them that you laid out for iran yesterday, seems like they're partially because you laid them out and partially because of what they are, there's not much room for negotiation if any on any of them. would you agree with that? because of the way that was put out there, what makes you think that iran is going to be willing to work with the u.s. on that? if it's sanctions, wouldn't that take a very long time at this point? >> i don't know which of those demands. should we allow them to be terrorists? is that one we should compromise on? how many missiles are they allowed to fire? >> right. >> the answer is -- the benchmark i set forward is a very low standard. it's the standard we expect from countries around the world. there's not a special set of rules for iran. we ask them to behave the way normal nonbelligerent nations behave. that's it. it's simple. there's not a special category
12:59 pm
of people that are permitted to fire missiles in to riyadh. we ask them to behave normal. i want the iranian people want that for their country as well. this is a rich country were a deep civilization and a wonderful history. i'm convinced that the people of iran, when they can see a path forward, which will lead their country to stop behaving in this way will choose that path. thank you all. i look forward to seeing you down here. have a good day. >> neil: listening to the secretary of state, mike pompeo making it clear, we're still working towards june 12. the understanding being that they seem to think that that event with the president of the united states, the leader of north korea, is still on even though the president of the united states today indicated it is not such a slam dunk and he raised serious doubts as to
1:00 pm
whether it would be worth his while to go there. the president meeting with the leader of south korea that is saying much of this is much ado about nothing. this will be ironed out. the differences and different reads and vibes on this meeting will all end up being settles and meeting will go on june 12. has this confused main street and wall street. welcome. i'm neil cavuto. you're watching "your world." i want to show you something. how this has the markets on hopes as well. just the thought this meeting might not come to bear send stocks careening. is that right? the is president just low balling expectations or is he concerned that this might not be worth his while or the north korean's while? let's get the read from blake burman at the white house. hi, blake. >> hi, neil. what is clear
