aim at the accuser. that is all ahead in the hour of "shepard smith reporting." >> trace: i'm trace gallagher in for shepard smith. u.s. and north korea are talking again and president trump says the meeting with kim jong un could still happen. >> we'll see what happens. it could be the 12th. we are talking to them. they want to do it. we like to do it. looking to see what happens. >> this is a major turn-around from yesterday when president trump announced he was pulling out of the june 12 summit in singapore. the president accused north korea of tremendous anger and open hostility after it warned of a possible nuclear-to-nuclear showdown. the north koreans responded saying they nuclear-to-nuclear show down. the north koreans say they were surprised that president trump cancelled. they're still willing to sit at any time in any forum. president trump tweeted good news to see the warm and
12:02 pm
productive statement from north korea. only time and talent will tell. this morning james mattis told reporters the summit could happen if our diplomats can pull it off. john roberts is live for us at the white house. i remember yesterday you saying when the letter was sent, sounded like a negotiation than a cancellation. that's a fair assess mmenassess. >> yes. the president read out the letter and said not coming to the table could lead to grave consequences. it was page four out of art of the deal book. the president looking to shake things up. mentioned how this perceived will depend on what north korea's reaction was. if they acted typically, everything was off the table. there was an opening here for
12:03 pm
north korea to be more diplomatic, which is what looked like happened. you have a number of people speaking for kim jong-un. the other day, the deputy foreign minister that was strident in her remarks. then somebody else last night suggesting, you know, it's not in the best interest of the world for the summit not to go forward. maybe we should consider putting things back on track again. at this moment, things are not back on track, but they're looking like they could be. listen to what sarah huckabee sanders said a short time ago. >> certainly we'd like to have a meeting. the president is not just looking to have a meeting or a cheap political stunt. he wants something that is a long-lasting and real solution. we'll always be prepared. we're going to do whatever to prepare for it. >> a real indication that something was afoot here. last weekend, the deputy chief of staff for operations, joe
12:04 pm
hagan, went to singapore after an agreement with north korea that they would meet there last weekend to hammer out the details. the american team, the team from the white house sat on the ground in singapore for three days. the north koreans never showed. stood them up. now there's talk about sending the team back to singapore for preliminary meetings to set things up. the problem here, trace, you're running out of time. less than 2 1/2 weeks until june 12. if this is going to happen as planned, they have to get on the stick. >> shepard: what about the democrats? what are we hearing from them? >> yesterday we heard from nancy pelosi that the president doesn't no what he's doing. we haven't heard from her today. we did hear from brad sherman, democrat from california who was on fox news overtime.
12:05 pm
>> he should have announced we're delaying the summit and say the reason for it is because they didn't show up to the planning meeting. by cancelling it, it makes them look like they're more interested in peace than we are. that's a mistake. >> according to the white house, they didn't cancel because the north koreans didn't show up in singapore. the reason they cancelled is because the deputy foreign minister basically threatened a nuclear confrontation with the united states if this diplomacy didn't work out. the president thought that that was intemperate language when you're crying to craft the peace deal. that's why he sent the letter to kim jong-un to counsel it. the president tweeting today, democrats are so obviously rooting against this in our negotiations with north korea just like they're coming to the defense of ms-13 thugs or ending
12:06 pm
your tax cut and raise your taxes. democrats have lost touch. trace? >> yeah, i get the rough language. when you're ghosted in singapore, has to be a big part of it. when the president reaching the deal on zte? >> back to that point of being ghosted in singapore. clearly you don't like that. joe hagan is a deputy chief of staff. he's not the vice president who they called a political dummy and said what he said was stupid. it's not threatening nuclear war. i do tend to buy the white house's argument is because of what they said for calling off the summit. to zte, the president said yesterday he has a deal in place with xi jinping on resurrecting zte. the fourth largest company of the world. they sell a lot of android phones here in the u.s. they were found guilty of cheating on sanctions of north
12:07 pm
korea and iran. the commerce department suspended the expert of u.s. goods, this is part for smart phones and tablets to zte, which shuttered the doors. the president told me that xi jinping and said listen, this is a lot of chinese jobs. is there something that we can do to open them back up. president trump said what are you willing to do? he said how about a fine of $500 million and we'll change out the management and the board and $1.5 million and you promise you'll buy your majority of the parts from the united states? xi said can we make it a billion? they settled on $1.3 billion and the other concessions. so the president battling back against some complaints from the democrats and members of his own party as well. listen to what chuck schumer
12:08 pm
said here in a statement. he said if the administration goes through with this deal, president trump would be helping make china great again. simply a fine and changing board members won't help america's security. could be a huge victory for president chi. both parties and congress should come together to stop this deal in its tracks. the president will likely get push back from democrats in congress. may get push back from members of his own part because marco rubio says they have a great deal for zte and china. china crushes company with no mercy and uses these company to spy and steal from us. many hope this will be different and congress should act. the president told me that the obama administration was trying to do things on zte. they had sanctions in place. the president said the obama administration didn't do anything. i shut down zte.
12:09 pm
clearly he thinks it's in the interest of letter relations to keep it open. trace? >> the timing is fascinating. let's bring in gordon chang, an author of "nuclear show down." and you talk about this back and forth. it's an on again and off again. what is your original take on the fact that we cancelled and looks like it could be a go? >> the north koreans realize they need to speak to the united states. they need sanctions relief. they don't want the united states to strike their nuke hand missile facilities. the chinese have threatened north korea. so basically the north koreans want a counter weight and the united states can provide that. when kim meets. trump and shakes hands, that's legitimatization of the north korean ruler. they would be conciliatory as they were yesterday afternoon, this is good news for president
12:10 pm
trump. it shows that he bent the north korean well. very few world leaders have been able to do that. >> we talked about the fact that they didn't show up in singapore and now the negative comments about the vice president. so haven't shown in the past week or so that they're really on board with this whole thing. all of a sudden you get the cancellation threat and north korea has history has said, they're like oh, no, no, no. we didn't mean that stuff. >> and i think the north koreans realized they overplayed their hand when they heard that president trump had withdrawn from the summit, this is important that the united states push north korea in a better direction. i think that we have the power to be able to disarm north korea without the use of force. we've seen the power of the president of the united states to do something no one in the world thought we could do, is really to get the north koreans to back down. >> it's fascinating to me, this whole zte deal with china.
12:11 pm
we know he got into kim jong-un's head and now you have these things clicking in place, gordon. do you find any kind of symmetry with this? >> there's no coincidence. the trump administration has changed its posture on china. not only do we see a tougher position on trade, on north korea and calling china out for sanctions busting, but we've seen a chill in military to military relations. the united states disinvited china from rim pack, which are the important naval exercises. there is really a change in washington looking at china as an adversary. this is important. ten years from now, we'll look back at this month and say this is the hinge where the united states abandoned four decades of policy that wasn't working and went to something else. >> the generals have said a long time, militarizing these ideas in the south pacific is a big
