enjoy watching segment as i did. honor of memorial day. thanks for joining us. >> we again with fox news alert, american prisoner held in venezuela since 2016 on his way back to america. joshua holt from utah calling his release a miracle and thanking those who pressed for his freedom. hello, everyone, welcome to america's news headquarters, i'm ed henry. >> i'm laura ingle. looking forward to seeing joshua holt in the white house, the great people of utah are celebrating. ellison barber live from the white house on this one. all right, ellison, was this expected? we are having technical

difficulties there. go ahead, ellison. >> fist indication of anything happening that we received from the white house. went to venezuela two years ago to get marry and stay until the venezuelan wife and two children had the proper visas to come to the u.s., the pair hadn't been married for long when they were arrested on weapon's charges, the u.s. said that the arrest was politically, president trump says that holt will be in dc at the white house with his family around 7:00 o'clock tonight. he made the announcement on twitter writing in part, good news about the release of american hostages from venezuela, great people of utah will be very happy. holt is a mormon missionary from utah, has sent the last two years pushing for holt's release. in a statement this morning, both holt and his wife are on plane heading home. tennessee senator bob corker, top official on the senate

foreign relations committee met with the venezuelan president nicolás maduro, pivotal to bring it is holts back home, laura. >> any changes that we can talk about? >> two white house officials told fox news that there was a plan to send top administration aides to singapore to work out logistics in regards to the summit, obviously when president trump canceled the summit, that became a big question mark and white house press secretary sarah sanders confirmed that the planning trip will still happen saying in statement that the white house preadvanced team for singapore will leave as scheduled in order to prepare should the summit take place. the president canceled this summit thursday morning after senior north korean official made statements threatening nuclear showdown and calling vice president mike pence
11:03 am
stupid, but then north korea's vice foreign minister said they were still open to talks. president trump called the statement productive and said this. >> we are talking to them now. they very much want to do, we'd like to do it, we are going to see what happens. >> president trump tweeted that if this summit takes place, it will likely still take place in singapore and on the previously planned date which is of course june 129, laura. >> fast-moving story, ellison, good to see you. meanwhile in surprising move kim jong un and south korean moon jae-in meeting for a second time, former white house press secretary sean spicer says kim has few options. >> kim knows that this meeting is the only shot he has as being seen on the world stage and that you're going to see kim do whatever he can to make concessions if they want to get that meeting on track on
11:04 am
june 12th. >> greg palcock live in seoul, south carolina, great. >> this story does not take any breaks over the weekend, we witnessed what could be another development to bring peace to the region, as you noted kim jong un and moon jae-in meeting on saturday, they did it along dmz as they did last time, this time on north korean side, we understand the session lasted two hours in addition to interkorean matters, we were told there was a frank and candid exchange of views about how to achieve a successful summit involving president trump and north korean kim, that summit as was noted basically canceled by the white house on thursday and revived on friday, saturday's meeting is seen by experts on the ground as the clearer signal yet that that june 12th singapore session could be back on amid reports to
11:05 am
teams ahead of planning. president trump was with moon this week, he was carrying a message from trump to kim, also perhaps that moon would become a go-between the matter, pushing kim to further commit to the key issue to all of this, that is denuclearization, remember also, we saw this week the claimed detonation and destruction that north korea's one-known nuclear test site in northern part of the country, there were no experts, no analysts on the ground there to confirm the claims to have north. laura, we can confirm again that the leaders of north and south were smiles, handshakes and even a hug and maybe a push towards and even more important summit. back to you. >> greg palcock, no breaks on the weekend. >> thanks, laura, for more gordon chang, asia policy, author of nuclear showdown,
11:06 am
north korea takes on the world, good see you. a month ago i had gone to you, the leaders of north korea and south korea are going to meet, they are going to shake hands and might have hugged, you might have said you're crazy, ed, now they have done it twice. >> this is amazing, three interkorean summits up and years between each other and now we've had two in short succession. moon jae-in is pronorth korean, he surrounded himself with people who actually want north korea to take over the south so i get a bit nervous when i see both kim and moon in the same place because there you have a north korean and -- much too cozy. >> what does president trump do to make sure we are not too cozy and the united states gets a good deal? democrats like nancy pelosi, the president sent this letter, it was all -- tickly with kim jong un, all of the overdone rhetoric
11:07 am
and they said he's blown the summit and here we are, actually kim jong un seemed to be on bended knee, he desperately wants to meet with president trump and maybe president trump played it just right? >> fascinating, thursday in the morning, president trump withdrawsdraws from the summit, almost immediately within an hour or so, you have the north koreans issue a string of messages, saying that they would be willing to go for the trump factor quote, unquote. this is an important thing. we have now found the key to dealing with the north koreans and -- >> that's basically the threat of force and also the sanctions to cut the money to north korea and we have a president that's as good as his words. look, i'm willing to walk away. >> he did that with the letter and, you know, you had the at the time, you go back to what the people are saying, this is will be the end to have peace process, this is going to be
11:08 am
thermal nuclear war, well, no it wasn't. kim caved immediately. that took me by surprise. >> last hour we had a democrat bill richardson on our air, you reacted sharply, i want to play some of it. >> i wish it not happened june 12th, because we need to do preparation, we need to find ways to have our message by one person. i think that's secretary pompeo, objective, a strategy, i think we are still not comfortable with the strategy we have on denuclearization. >> a veteran diplomat, did a lot of good, ambassador to un and what not, as you and i were talking, he and others both democrats and republicans, administration after administration did the same thing over and over again and yet this president is trying something different and appears to be working. >> certainly. richardson talks about preparation, i can sort of understand that but on the other hand we've had little preparation and we've the north koreans make important
11:09 am
concessions, they released three americans and made public commitments to denuclearizing and we heard in summit when moon said kim was willing to get rid of nukes, kim is being cynical. the other thing that richardson said in the interview i think is critical, he said, look, the united states as it prepares needs to weave in china and south korea, well, china has been a malign factor, busting sanctions openly. it's encouraging kim to back away from the u.s., so the last thing in the world, ed, we need to get the north koreans and the chinese away from each other. we need the chinese off to the side. >> "the new york times" story, the president basically tweeted it was fake news, don't believe it, the jest of it, there's a split on the administration they claim where hard-liners like john bolton, there has to be denuclearization before you come to the table where there are others like secretary mattis in
11:10 am
pentagon, june 129, whatever day it is, should be the beginning of talks and denuclearization could happen in months or years? >> we should do it as quickly as possible. in the past we had the fazed attempt and didn't work for a number of reasons. right now president trump can look at the table, kim, you're giving them up because if you don't i will start sanctioning you, north korea, i'm going to start sanctioning china for money laundering and i will get the russians out of the picture and isolate and that's a very important now. >> the sooner the better. >> we have richardson saying, look, completely denuclearization is not possible, that's not your opening bargaining position and that's not something you're striving for and the president said clearly, these guys are giving up all nukes, that's got to be our position. not only what we say in public but we really mean. >> i'm supposed to be in
11:11 am
singapore do i get a nonrefundable ticket? >> nonrefundable ticket. >> you think it's happening? >> look, even if it wasn't happen on june 129, it'll happen soon, the north koreans need too much from the united states right now and we should strike while the iron is hot. >> we have come a long way, not there yet, gordon chang, appreciate your insight. laura. >> hurricane season has not begun but already a subtropical storm is heading towards the gulf of mexico. the rain the southeast can see as we look at your holiday weekend forecast. plus, gas prices on the rise, how the trump administration standoff with iran is expected to affect your wallet and will it play a role in the midterms? and president trump making a deal with china over sanctions of one of its tech companies, why lawmakers on both sides of the aisle not happen about this one there's flonase sensimist.

>> we've got new developments on u.s. sanctions against zte, president announcing he struck a deal with china's president allowing the corporation to stay in business. gillian turner has more from washington. >> president trump has struck a deal with chinese president
11:16 am
trump xi that eases sanctions on telecom giant zte. xi reached out to president trump directly pleading on behalf of the chinese company, zte had been penalized for doing business with both iran and north korea, major violation of sanctions, the president indicating days ago he believes china's bad behavior is the united states' fault. >> we had massive theft of intellectual property. i don't blame china, i blame the united states for allowing this to happen. >> now lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are slamming the move. a letter signed by 14gop senators calls zte, quote, serial and premeditated violaters of u.s. law and cautions the president that fidelity to the rule of law is a key part of what distinguishes the u.s. from a country like china that's ruled by communist dictatorship. a statement from democratic leader pelosi, reason part the president zte deal is staggering
11:17 am
betrayal of the american people although trump pledged to fight for hard-working americans, he's now using u.s. government resources to enrich a foreign company. but the president standing firm insisting he'll forced zte to change management. pay $1.3 billion fine and commit to buying american parts, he also says it'll help get a better trade deal with china in the future. all this as the u.s.-china relationship also faces major obstacles in security front. yesterday military landed long-range bombers in artificial island in south china sea, the two are grappling with the north korean issue. this adds yet another degree uncertainty to bilateral relationship that's strained in every possible direction. ed. >> gillian turner reporting from washington, thank you. laura. >> and for more on this, let's bring in john, associate editor for wall street journal and fox news contributor. thank you for being here
11:18 am
memorial weekend. we are talking about the deal that we are learning the details of because they are now public. let's talk about security first, trade war or not, people are wondering about the security concerns, are they legitimate, some of the phones, talking about zte manufacturers, american parts, the security safe, are we safe as americans? >> well, the republican senators and the democratic senators who disagreed with the president's move say we are not and not only are we not safe but they violated the sanctions' deal. and they covered it up after ward. the commerce department has rules for that and the president should not step over those rules. he should abide by them and the congress department had -- said, look, zte is not a player and we will penalize them. >> there's been pretty significant negotiating going on between president trump and president xi, how does it all
11:19 am
play out in the world statement, we are all watching in interest but possibly north korea, all of it, right? >> that's right, i think that -- i suspect that when xi did contact president trump he was not pleading for relief for zte, he was probably in a very subtle way threatening, look, we can hold up your qualcomm deal to net-- netherlands company or renege of resolution in north korea, a lot of tit for tat trades doing on, are they going to buy u.s. agriculture goods, are they not going to buy them. threat to withhold other purchases if u.s. gets tough with zte, those are the tit for trat trade deals. if you step further back, the big issue with china is it operates in an entirely different way than all of our
11:20 am
global trading partners. it subsidizes its companies, hugely. making them essentially impossible competitor on the world stage, how is the u.s. going to change the model, i don't think the tit for tat, back and forth is going to make much difference. >> i'm glad that you brought that up. there's a report of economic threat of the world, two decades ago china's growth exports were on par with the netherlands, only north korea we lied on the world's most popular company and now china exports far more than any other country on earth and is the top supplier of countries in every corner of the world. i want to mention that wilbur ross is to visit china to smooth things over. what do you think about axios put out there and what do you
11:21 am
think will happen with the meeting? june? >> wilbur ross had a major trade delegation go, secretary of treasury mnuchin, lighthizer, trade representative went, not a lot happen as a result of that. so i'm not sure what's going to come of wilbur ross' meetings, it would be incremental chapter. on the first question, china is a major supplier to all corners of the world, not necessary lu top supplier, we are still a huge player in global gdp and trading system. but china does trade and operate in a different model and you're seeing kind of hawkishness grow in washington very interesting loi not just among republicans, not just among the trump administration, on the other side as well. among members that had been in previous administration all asking what can be done to change the china-trade model, is
11:22 am
wto, world trade organization, sufficient? should it be rethought? a lot of major thinking nature steps are probably being put into play and i have to say that maybe president trump is in part responsible for that, that he's kind of energized this discussion by throwing down the hammer with china. >> all right, we know that it's going to be interesting, we will be watching, thank you so much for your perspective. >> president trump reportedly not happy about the job the secretary of homeland is doing. the president blaming kristin nileson for surge of in illegal crossings, there were fewer when john kerry was secretary. >> no secret the president is frustrated with this issue, legal immigration was focal point in campaign and supporters are expecting him to keep. the problem the president is running into, there's only so much he can do on his own to fully address this and to do that he needs congress to really step in to address border and
11:23 am
immigration. this morning he tweeted, put pressure on the democrats to end the horrible law that separates children from their parents once they cross the border and u.s., catch and release, lottery and chain must also go with it and we must continue building the wall. democrats are protecting ms-13 thugs. so far congress has not acted and we have seen reportedly previously, homeland security, secretary nielson is taking the brunt of the president's frustrations, he has signed bills to give dhs more fund to go secure and deplore national guards to help. the acting deputy commissioner of customs and border protection said those steps have helped but on their own won't likely meet the president's goals in securing the border. >> we need to continue to build capabilities, we want control of the border. the president brought that mandate back to us, we are happy to give him action plans, we've got on funding for 18 and we are
11:24 am
putting that into full use so we can add capability and do more in the border. >> as for congress, there is currently an effort underway by a group of house republicans to force gop leadership to bring several daca and immigration-related bills to the floor for debate next month several which the president have said to support. none of the bills are expected to have votes to have. mcconnell agrees and this week he does not plan to spend time on immigration this year. >> thank you, garrett. laura. >> a teacher held as hero for taking down a student who opened fire inside a classroom and in hawaii, lava continues to cause destruction on the big island, look at that, can you believe this is still happening? the toll it's taking on local and tourism. >> it's like shock, like, oh, my god, that's really happening right there, like it is not that far from where our house is.

11:29 am
>> gas prices are up, you probably noticed that before i did and it's not because we are moving into the summer. regular gallon of gas is up 6 cents from this time last year. the increase cost of fuel is
11:30 am
already wiping out a big chunk of the benefit americans received from gop tax cut and things could get worse as summer approaches following administration's standoff with iran oil-producing nations to tight supplies, what's going on here, political consultant, he worked on three presidential campaigns and michael star hopkins-democratic strategists and huffington post contributor. >> thanks for having me. >> for republicans, does this put them on defense in midterms, we heard so much about the tax cuts are going to be a great boom to republican candidates in november, now all of a sudden, if americans spend summer going to beach or picnic and gas prices are high, that seems like a political prop? >> not only the summer, but think about the upcoming fall and winter, i am concerned about this. every economist for the most part across the board does -- all the studies indicate that consumer spending is up and with that means is that the tax break
11:31 am
is working and more money in their accounts, 401(k), investments a lot better than what they did years ago, when you think about the increase in gas prices, if you're a family of 4 and want to take a vacation, you think about how this impact individuals across the board and i do think republicans do have to consider how much of an impact in midterms if our soul government is giving something and articulate the message when you look at the rising prices of gas. >> so, michael, there's some honest talk there, some straight talk there from your republican colleague about how there could be challenges for them, on the other hand, i'm looking at new york times headline today that says among other things democrats will avoid disaster in california house, 3 or 4 house seat it is democrats thought
11:32 am
were going to be slam dunks for them and maybe republicans will hold onto seats and maybe blue wave is not what a lot of people thought it would be. >> i think democrats have a good chance to recapture the house but i think democrats do have a problem with messaging. the tax bill has been popular but also we have seen lower middle-class people not receive some of the benefits they expected, it's produced a mixed message for democrats, on one end, there's critiques that need to be made on the tax bill but on the other part, when you look at speaker pelosi and comments about crumbs, they have been hurtful for democrats, a measured approach is needed. >> real quick. i was going to say really quickly, the democrats don't have a message, for most part their entire message has been replace donald trump. we have to, you know, get rid of him, he's doing a horrible job. look, americans may disagree with aspects of president trump, i disagree with certain aspects but if you you look at policy,
11:33 am
we are seeing success, policy, whether that's domestically, you start talking about welfare issues that the president has mentioned, we will do welfare reform, you talk about infrastructure, the president has talked about certainly things as well, there's success that you can clearly point to. >> you the possibility, the democrats were laughing at president and now maybe peace talks after all. you have unemployment, historic lows not just across the board for hispanics and african americans, what part of peace and prosperity does not like? >> it's not the issue about not liking peace and prosperity, what we want is equality for all i think if democrats can continue to push a message that brings together democrats, republicans and independents, then it's going to be a great
11:34 am
2018. >> michael, i agree with economic success for all. i think if you look at certain -- let's look at this locally, if you look at congressional district as cross the country particular those heavily minority, you look at the lack of economic mobility, you look at techs and opportunity, look at the entrepreneurial opportunities, when you talk about democrats being as part and want success in mobility and people, i have to push back because all indicators don't show that's the case. >> michael, i will let you make the last point. wall street journal has the thing today that basically talks about tax revenue soaring in some democratic states like new york, connecticut, california. unexpectedly blue states because of what the president did, there were some taxes going up in those states and revenues going up but also because corporate profits are soaring right now and we've heard democrats say, they are going to put it in pocket, they are helping jerry brown in california. he's helping deal with budget
11:35 am
deficits because corporations are paying more in taxes in some of the states because the economy is so good. >> well, i agree with you on that point. i'd say if you in a position where you can invest in the stock market, you can buy real estate, then you are in a good position, that's not a lot of americans, and what we are seeing is basically a corporate bail-out if you're big pharma, if you're big oil, if you're in banking, those industries have seen -- [inaudible] >> we can argue about bonuses really help, a lot of average workers have gotten bonuses. >> they have seen costs go up, health care, gas go up. >> that's because of democrats. that's not a fair argument. >> you have every chamber right now. >> thanks for coming in. >> democracy. >> laura. >> tourism on hawaii's big island you can only imagine
11:36 am
taking a big hit. lava has now destroyed a total of 82 homes and other buildings on the island. >> to give you an idea of how vast the flows are right now, we've got approximately 223 acres covered by lava. >> jeff paul live from the island, all right, jeff, what's the concern right now. >> lowa, the most powerful earthquake just erupted during summit of kilauea and they are expecting more tremors and don't have any idea when the volcano can stop. if you look at the timeline, you can see how massive and uncontrollable the lava is in several neighborhoods and fires only expect today get higher. scientists say the volcano can
11:37 am
remain more active in several months and weeks, no one really knows and the locals we talked say, they are prepared. >> it's been going on hundreds of millions of thousands of years and it's going to keep going. even geologists know that we stay on top of the hot spot and they will keep on pumping. >> now, since this volcano started getting active a little more than 3 weeks ago, a total of 2,000 people have been evacuated, laura. >> jeff, i keep checking my social media feeds and i keep seeing people posting pictures on different areas on the island there so people are still going there but how is it really impacting tourism, a lot of people have to be bailing at this point? >> yeah, we've received a lot of questions from people if it's safe to come to the island and the tourism board are saying, yes, we are hope for business, in fact, this volcano hasn't impacted commercial air travel
11:38 am
yet, possibility but so far that habit been impact just yet. tourism experts that we spoke with estimate the bookings for hotels and other activities of the island, this particular island are down by about 50% from the month of way to july, they've also said that they lost millions of dollars to park closure. the folks out here telling people, still come to the island, unless you are downwind near volcano or near active fishers, it's not impacting. >> thank you so much, stay safe. >> wow, pretty remarkable, those pictures. 13-year-old girl in critical condition after classmate open fire in indiana teacher. a science teacher was also shot as he knocked the weapon from gunman's hands. this is what the classroom looked like after the incident. you can see the barricade. shooter has been arrested. president trump tweeting, thanks to very brave teacher and hero
11:39 am
of indiana. saving so many precious lives. his quick and automatic action is being talked about all over the world, yes, indeed. >> president trump pois today fulfill another campaign promise as a multibillion dollar bill to overhaul the va heads to his desk. the changes that it could bring when it comes to medicare options, plus he received the military's highest honor for a daring assault in afghanistan. former navy seal is speaking exclusively with fox news about what happened that day. >> we are free because like you we have warriors that are willing to give sweat and blood and if they have to lives for our great nation.
