howie: the justice department secretly obtains the phone and email records of a "new york times" reporter in a leak investigation that involves a former aide that is her ex-boyfriend. that may be why ali watkins was able to break the story about carter page. >> this is the question moving ford. what did the trump administration know and when did they know it. president trump: you cannot leak classified information. we need freedom of the press, but you cannot leak. howie: was the reporter

compromised? the president being hit with very negative coverage of his confrontational approach at the g-7 meeting as he just arrived in singapore for the summit. >> donald trump thinks he can blow it off like he does haven't to study for the test. he can come in and ace it without doing his homework. if you don't know the back story and the history and don't know what the north korea yabs want out of it, they can take you for a ride. >> kim jong-un is backed into a corner right now. howie: will the criticism effect the outcome of the meeting? the president disinvites the philadelphia eagles from the white house. rudy giuliani becomes a press

pinata with his loose talk of stormy daniels and his view of women. >> i don't respect a porn star the way i respect a career woman or a woman of substance. howie: i'm howard kurtz and this is "mediabuzz." james wolfe, a former top staffer on the senate intel committee. the "new york times" reporter work for "buzzfeed" broke this story about carter page. a former trump advisor met with a russian spy. watkins and wolfe exchanged over 100 text messages that day.

>> why did carter page confirm this to you and what was his affect towards this information becoming public? >> he was very forthcoming with it. i had been doing a lot of reporting on it and knew it was him in the document. president trump: i'm a big believer in freedom of the press, but i'm also a believer in classified information. it has to remain classified. and that includes comey and his band of thieves who leaked classified information all over the place. howie: joining us, mollie hemingway, susan ferrechio, chief congressional correspondent for the washington examiner. and juan williams, co-host of "the five." will the media uproar over the surveillance of a reporter doing her job prompt a reexamination

of the fbi tactics. russia, mueller, trump investigation? mollie: it's understandable the public is concerned when the government investigates a reporter. we do have freedom of the press. but a lot of the way journalists can work is made possible by the department of justice choosing not to go after journalists. there aren't as many rights there when you are involved in the commission of a crime such as leaking classified information. they don't seem to provide that same understanding when they are look at how donald trump does not appreciate being surveilled in his campaign and other work. howie: the press is outraged. and jeff sessions says he's ramping up these investigations. it was eric holder's, obama's a.g. who approved the investigation of james rosen and

others. susan: "the washington post" had a story out yesterday talking about how they went too far it's buried in the story. he said we went too far surveilling fox news employees. but we put safeguards in place. so for trump to be doing this is inappropriate. it many the ultimate hypocrisy. there have been so many leaks coming out of the trump administration compared to the obama administration. howie: the press turned on obama. not just at fox. our journalists rely on confidential sources to do their work. they are legitimately concerned that sources won't want to talk to them. juan: it sounds like a cliche',

but it's chilling. i go back to covering ronald reagan. without leaks, you don't have an operational dynamic between government officials and reporters. you have official statements and dog and pony show type events and speeches. but you require a certain level of intimacy with the reporter trusting the source and the source trusting the reporter. a lot of times it's official policy coming from an administration in terms of trial balloons they are putting out to reporters. in terms of the trade craft of reporting, there is a legitimate relationship. that's why the obama administration. howie: let me come back to ali watkins. she had a romantic relationship with the top guy at the senate

intel committee. page did confirm to her on the record that he was male number one in the court filing. does this warrant the court going after her records? mollie: 20 a.p. reporters had their information taken. that's very aggressive. it seems they just took meta data. it's important to have journalists try to encrypt everything and have conversations that can't be surveilled by the government. what is interesting here, this relationship is somewhat scandalous. i am surprised so many editors aloud her to continue to cover someone she had a personal relationship with. it's important to not have too close a relationship.

howie: ali watkins denied getting confidential information from her source. but there are thousands of texts and calls. does this romance muddy the waters and make her less than an ideal poster child for journalists investigated by the government? juan: no. how many times have -- i have been out drinking with sources and you level relationships. and sometimes it becomes friendships. and that's all part of it. howie: isn't there a distinction between going to a bar with somebody and sleeping with somebody? juan: i'm not going to get into that. from my perspective the justice department has to make an exhaustive effort to obtain the necessary information before they start grabbing reporters files, information and even devices. mollie: it's important that

journalists be forthright about their sources. one of the things that was interesting about ali watkins is she stated it was trump attorneys leaking the information when it appears this man who has been indicted was sharing information with reporters. howie: she tweeted about the committee's view. juan: can i make one last point? he was not indicted for leaking classified information. howie: but the feds told ali watkins back in february her records had been seized and she did not tell the "new york times." she makes the point she is writing the stories for "buzzfeed." susan: i think the media landscape has transformed. years ago this would have been a fireable offense. now they are trying to survive

with clicks and pay views. i think she was producing scoops and that was more important. howie: the white house press pounced on sarah huckabee sanders after president trump's attorneys admitted he quote dictated a statement. this was after the news broke his son held a trump tower meeting with the russians. >> how can we believe what you say from the podium. it's my understanding it's entirely inaccurate. >> i can't comment on a letter from the president's outside counsel. i think my credibility is higher than the media's because in large part you spend more of your time attacking the president rather than reporting the news. howie: she may have been given bad information last year. but she refused to even engage or acknowledge the question.

she just kept saying ask the lawyers. mollie: last year she said trump didn't dictate this letter. the attorney's letter says he did. no one begrudges her for having had false information. and it's not a big deal whether the president dictated this letter or not. but something needs to be done to restore credibility when you say something that's not true. howie: it minimizes what happened at that trump meeting. she said the reporters were trying to tear her down and her credibility is higher than the media's. is thiser way of deflecting the question? juan require's combative and i think it's reflective of her boss who is a big leaker according to the media. she is protecting her boss who

gave her the bad information. she is being a good soldier for the administration. but in the context of the american president and the trump administration it takes on a different hue. just like president trump says i'm a good counter puncher, that was sarah herself. howie: she says i try very hard every day to do my job and provide you with the right information. she just was seen as refusing to account for her previous false statement. susan: i don't think there was any credible way for her to get out of this? can you imagine if she said i was given bad information. the press treats his administration with far more scrutiny and criticism and gotcha, gotcha, gotcha than we have seen forever. it created a very defensive

posture for sarah and the rest of the crew. mollie: when the letter came out from trump's attorneys, there was have much in there that was interesting that made it seem trump had a strong case against mueller. the only thing the media picked up on was this point. juan: obstruction of justice. if the president is dictating that letter in order to push the investigators off that course, that could contribute to mueller's probe. howie: let me throw out this "time" magazine cover pr -- portraying donald trump as a king saying "king me." the g-7 meeting ended in acrimony. the president versus the

the media seem to be covering it as a matter of personality. one thing to upset the status quo is something that is complicated and interesting. they have been portraying donald trump as someone who wants to increase tariffs willy-nilly, not seeing it as a leveraging point. he said i have a proposal. how about we get rid of all subjects does, all barriers. they didn't seem to be so keen on that. they like the irregular system where they can impose large tariffs and the americans don't. howie: the headline today, typhoon trump blows allies off course. but the tone is about like a bull in a china shop. others say the president is fighting for america. juan: everybody says it's america first. but the counter point doesn't

come from the press it comes from the french president macron who says the united states under donald trump is increasingly pursuing isolationist policies. howie: it's not just a question of the press quoting other nato or kn leaders or mexican leaders. this is the news analysis. let me go to susan on this. in trump some fear the end of the world order. pretty dramatic. susan: the problem with the personality-based coverage of trump is missing better stories here. one thing that's been wholly ignored because we are focusing on his tweets. this is a huge issue. hillary clinton and barack obama both floarnlgd renegotiate nafta. it was a big part of their campaigns.

he is actually trying to do this. howie: how do you not at least do in part personality-based coverage when the president treats that the prime minister of canada is very weak. >> where is other story i just mentioned. you don't see that. juan: the united states is disrupting the established world order in terms of trade. i think to say -- the president and the white house own economic advisors are saying this disruption could increase the number of jobs lost and hurts us. susan: they have been talking for years about fixing it. howie: the president was asked by a reporter about his relationships with the other western leaders. take a look. president trump: who do you work for. >> cnn.

president trump: i figured, fake news cnn. the relationship i have had is great. so you can tell that to your fake friends at cnn. howie: the relationship has not been so great. mollie: the question was a cartoonish question. understanding our relationship with our allies and how we are treating them and moving to north korea. but the way it was phrased was so over the top it's and reminder you should do a better job posing questions if you want to get a good answer. howie: what about his comment i am prepared but i don't have to be that prepared because it's all about attitude. susan: that was their classic move where they truncate the whole paragraph. if you listen to wholly what he said there, he said i have been preparing for a long time for this. if you listen to it in context,

the center for politics at the university of virginia. do you think the justice department went too far in seizing these rec? larry lahr larry * i think theyo to poor just like the bald administration did. we look look at with ther the government should be taking actions like this against reporters. howie: the obama justice department did a lot of this in terms of seizing records from journalists doing their jobs. but isn't the government justified in trying to stop the leaking of classified information? it isn't a crime for a reporter to receive it but there is a charge against the former senate intel committee official for transmitting this information to reporters. larry: it's easy to say yes.

but you know the government will classify the telephone directory if they have half a chance. they will stamp that classified. the fact that something has a stamp of class youified on it does not necessarily mean it relates to national security. fit is a serious national security concern the government would be justified in limited cases. but often this is a way of chilling the press and most of importantly chilling sources. howie: i think it does have a chilling impact. every reporter who goes to a source and says i'll protect your identity. the fact that encrypted apps were discovered. also is troubling. but the fact is as we mentioned in the earlier segment. ali watkins former of the of the "time," now of "buzzfeed," was

dating the aide. declining trust in the media. will that limit the impact of the public care being this stuff? larry: it isn't a pleasant part of the story. it adds an element that causes tall of us to back up a little bit. i still go to the heart of the matter. do you want government deciding what we the people see if it's not directly related to national security. we the people pay for all this stuff. again i just learned over the years that government will keep as much information as they possibly can to themselves whether it's justified or not. they want the knowledge, they want the information, they want the power that comes from it and they don't want us to have it. howie: i think you make the salient point that this did not start with president trump. great to see you, larry, thanks for joining us.

personal lawyer is jarring. i can understand why there was an immediate reflex. but it was a crowded news cycle. mika bra zin ski was trying to get clare mccass scel to react to it. howie: i covered him as mayor and u.s. attorney. and he seems to be creating brushfires he has to stamp out. philippe: giuliani is the president's legal spokesperson. vaf nattie is stormy daniels -- avenatti is stormy danielss legal spokesperson. but rudy, he's look for it.

and he's getting it. the coverage isn't just what he is saying. you had the secretary of state saying rudy doesn't speak for foreign policy. howie: that's when he said kim jong-un was on his hand and knees begging for a summit. howie: some are saying look at melania, she did some recent photo shoots as a model. avenatti said he's asking for people on twitter to provide proof that rudy giuliani watches porn. seriously? emily: when you peel back the layers on this, you have to think what is the relevance of this. ways this telling us that michael avenatti whose

credibility is waning. when we peel back the layers, i'm not sure there was a lot of relevance for viewers. it's seen as two compelling players in the circus. howie: here rudy giuliani brings in the president's wife. >> she believes in her husband. she knows it's not true. beautiful women, classy women, great substance. stormy daniels? howie: that prompted the first lady spokesperson to say rudy giuliani never discussed anything with melania. kind of a wrist slap. philippe: more like across the face sucker punch. the reason we are talking about porn stars is because donald

trump had an affair with one while he was married to melania. there is a reason why it's object television. it's not just because avenatti and giuliani are colorful people. pompeo had to strike him down. the president said rudy is rudy. it's not a media fixation as much as rudy is lashing out and being criticized from all sides including from his boss. howie: melania trump re-emerged in the public eye. the president put up a tweet saying the media has been so unfair and vicious to my wife and our great first lady. she is doing really well. doesn't the president have a point here.

a political headline about conspiracy theories. it became kind of an obsessi emily: it was a huge thing. he shouldn't have used the word report. i didn't see anybody reporting she had a facelift or is in virginia. but what some people in the press did this week is disgusting it's one thing for conspiracy theorists to fling this into the media. but to speculate about spousal abuse is stunning. it shows you how trump drives people to the point of acting unreasonable and treating the president in a way they never would anybody else. howie: the president tweeting how melania was spotted by four reporters but didn't report that baits would hurt the sick

narrative. it's like the press saying she needs to do what we want and appear before the cameras. philippe: she had a health issue. there was legitimate concern about her health. conspirator-in-chief cannot wake up one day and say i am concerned about conspiracy theories about my family. howie: both things may be true. philippe: the person who came in friday said she is doing great. she just can't travel for a month. he said the very thing that had they said weeks earlier would have avoid this entire segment. howie: the press pounds the president for disinviting the super bowl champs. kim kardashian actually got something done at the white

so i also think what you are saying is what you just said, there is a lot of eagles players that seem to have backed out of the agreement. it was a low gels i cal and p.r. play. howie: what fueled the media criticism, philippe. no eagles player took a knee during the anthem in this past season. the president does like this culture war. philippe: it was to tremendous political effect. the president is looking for every opportunity he can to fight that culture war. first it was during the season, now it's every time someone comes. no a single eagles player took a knee during the season except to pray. but it's unfortunate.

sports should be the last vestige where people can disagree. emily and i should be able to watch a game and not kill each other. howie: the press goes crazy over this because they like the culture war. emily: how we were talking about, i don't think this was a big culture war strategy on the white house's part. i think they would be embarrassed with only one eagles player showed up. they needed to slap a band-aid on it and make it look like it was somehow different than what it was. yet what we heard was different than that. howie: most of pundits said the president was being divisive.

but couldn't they have showed up out of respect and tradition of sports teams going there? philippe: terry bradshaw said he thinks the eagles did the right thing. if i know someone is sexist and misogynistic, i'm not going to go to their party. it happened with the warriors and the washington capitals. just stop with the events. let's stop making them. they become political. let's stop with the, you know -- howie: someone suggested the president should invite the horse justify. before the championship ended between le bron james' cleveland cavaliers and the golden state warriors. le bron and steph said we won't

be going to the white house if we win. isn't it a shame because sports does get i effected by politics. quick reaction, emily. emily: there is sympathy among the press for one side of this debate and it shows upper time. what we don't talk about is what effect this will have on the post-trump presidency. is the white house going to be damaged because these sports traditions were overlooked in the trump presidency. howie: emily jashinsky, philippe reines, thank you very much. fox news at night did show some unrelated footage that left the wrong impression. reporter: during our report about the president canceling the philadelphia eagles trip to the white house we showed
