1:01 pm
yet. lindsey graham on sunday telling maria bro he sees no traces the president is different from past administrations. >> north korea is sitting down with trump, they believe for the first time they have got somebody in the white house they don't know how to deal with and trump goal is to eliminate their program not contain it. i think he is north korea and china's attention. >> greg is live in seoul, south korea. from the region most affected by the summit. hi greg. >> hi arthel. probably few places in the world are watching this singapore summit involving the president and kim jong-un closer than the folks in south korea. here in seoul we our about 30 minutes from the dmz.
1:02 pm
the president is already in singapore getting one day before the summit activity. they are trying and hoping he will make some kind of a deal. some kind of deal regarding the nuclear weapons of kim jong-un own. not quite clear what he will do. they have watched for years, they watched north korea make threats. last year they went to the absolute brink and have been listening to the rhetoric coming from both sides. very tense.also hoping that some kind of movement might be made to end the korean war. fighting stopped 65 years ago but only with a truth that there are some signs they could move on at the summit. everyone i have been speaking to in the past day, south koreans have been down this road before. i think the best way to describe their mood is hopeful but cautious. >> and greg, by the way, and reaction about north korea? >> yes. from north korea here this is
1:03 pm
the most interesting part of the story. they do not even really know that it is going on. at least the citizens of north korea. yes, they know their leader is meeting with president trump but apparently, the state media, the propaganda apparatus has not let them know exactly when this is happening or where this is happening. they are holding off on crucial details apparently just in case it does not exactly go to plan. still, no real matter according to the analysts. again, that we been speaking to in the past day or so. the summit is not really about the common folks in north korea. it is about securing kim's position. it is about security reassurances to the regime and the overall improvement of the economy. as for how much kim jong-un own will give up halfway at least two of the president trump and united states everyone is watching and waiting.
1:04 pm
back to you. >> thank you. >> the president of course will be the first sitting u.s. president to ever sit down with the north korean leader. as he tries to strike a deal with a long time hostile u.s. adversary. what can we realistically expect? christian is a former state department senior advisor for president donald trump and george w. bush. joining us now. kim rules the state and execute his people, puts them in gulags. an estimated one many people starved during the famine. has repeatedly threatened us. this is perhaps signal that that perhaps can start to change? >> that is the hope. but it is not really the top of the agenda. the top of the agenda has to be our own security of the united states. the security of the american

people. there has been a long-standing view of the presidents of both parties. a country that does not trust a citizen does not respect the rights of its own citizens will not respect the rights of his neighbors. clearly, north korea is really the worst human rights abuser to his own people and americans who have been unfortunate enough to travel there and be taken hostage. japanese who have been held hostage there for decades. in the back of your mind is important to remember this is still a very evil regime. >> how does the president of the united states deal with this regime? >> you basically cannot trust their word. they have to judge them based on their actions. the secretary of state has said it has not done a lot of press but is very telling. talked with kim more than any american. kim may be contemplating a very different path. if they choose the path it will not just be this will be a broader liberalization, a broader engagement with the world on economics. it could then lead to some breakdown in the prison state that they run. >> today because it is a different generation with kim then his grandfather and father, he sees the rest of the world, he watches media.he knows how the rest of the world

lives. even though his people may not. you think you really now wants to reach out? that he is sincere in claiming that he will denuclearize his country? yet, the denuclearization could mean two different things to us and to pyongyang. >> i think it could. i think it will be a big issue coming out of the summit. obviously we have a denuclearization, that means removal essentially of nuclear materials and processes and capabilities for north korea. they might try to pull a fast one and they say just means taking warheads off missiles. taking packages out of warheads, something like that. >> is that something we should expect? >> no, i think the president has been clear complete verifiable disarmament. if you look at other countries that have dents like libya the programs were much smaller. if you look at the nuclear facility that produces nuclear fuel from which you can derive, we will need all that nuclear waste out of the country. for example.
1:07 pm
and just the logistics of that loan will be big. you do not need to solve all that in singapore. you need a meeting of the minds. the two people capable of making those choices. >> and you think we'll get that and that they will achieve that? >> i would not bet the farm but i'm cautiously optimistic. i think that we see something very different from kim and that he may also be calculating. he did replace his top three military people recently. so he may be repositioning his vision with the view that the best way for his regime is to survive to take the step and not another try like his father did tries to pull a fast one on the united states. >> had you see this playing out? some say should be immediate and others say this should be a phased denuclearization. there is the concern that raising this out or phasing it through a time. is only giving them a chance to perfect their delivery capability and the ballistic missiles. >> based on a hunch they have
1:08 pm
not perfected the delivery system. we've seen multistage intercontinental missiles. we've seen test of reported hydrogen bomb. it could be just another but is a big deal. the only thing we do not know for certain is that they have a survivable and well targeted reentry but it is not the hardest part of the program. again, it is very complex program. even a complete agreement for full disarmament will take time. the president said repeatedly there may have to be future meetings at that level or certainly a lower level. i do not want to know if you call it a phase but it will not be victory by wednesday. >> at first, the administration was saying that they want something immediately. the last appearance here john bolton, a contributor now security advisor, in march, telling me that if there is a meeting, should be quick, issued and quickly but kim does not agree to denuclearize.
1:09 pm
here he is. >> will show you where they end up in oak ridge tennessee right next to the libyan nuclear weapons program. that is talking about denuclearization. >> what if they say just a waste of time? >> a short meeting? >> a short meeting. >> what changed? >> again, this signal has been verified repeatedly by secretary pompeo that kim may pursuing a different path. just then that it got scheduled and then canceled by trump. it probably took kim if not hat in hand it was on him to get back on. and he did. you also have the president come off of what i think experts disagree on this but i think it's a very strong performance at the g7 summit in qucbec where again, the president show he will not be browbeaten into something that
1:10 pm
is not into the interest of the united states. their willingness to walk away. but john is fundamentally right. the north shows up it could be more of give us money in exchange for promises before we do anything. i think and i hope that does not happen and i don't think it will. >> some kind of plan at least to begin the next process in terms of denuclearization. >> yes. i think that is a fundamental hurdle. this is a framework for what goes next the actual steps. with the soviets it was trust. with north korea think it is distressed and verified, we want to see actions and hopefully no energy assistance that can be easily monetized by the regime. either from us or south korea. whose government is much more inclined toward appeasement than the united states and japan. instead, the goodies frankly for north korea on this should be a chance to join a reduction in sanctions once they've done real things. >> do you think that is exactly
1:11 pm
what kim wants and hope to achieve himself? >> again, it will be interesting to see. if they want to jerk us around and pull a fast one, and pocket as much aid as they can. because that is what they repeatedly done and in particular the bush administration which i saw in the clinton administration. hopefully not. there will be sort of the telltale. if you see the president come out of this quickly and if you say talk about restoring maximum pressure, then things will have gone badly. presumably because of what we fear they may do. >> we will see what happens tuesday. all the eyes of the world on it. thank you so much, as always. >> thank you eric. >> very sad news to report today about a fallen hero. the pentagon identifying the u.s. special operations soldier who was killed in somalia. his 26-year-old staff sergeant, alexander conrad of chandler, arizona. sergeant conrad served two
