safety. that's ahead in this hour. two of the world's largest economies firing the first shots in what china is saying is the biggest trade war in economic history. the trump administration slap add 25% import tax on 25 billion of chinese goods. china didn't want long to respond. china retaliating on an equal amount of american products like soy beans, pork and electric cars. president trump said this might just be the beginning. he warned that the white house may eventually target more than $500 billion worth of chinese goods. analysts say this trade war could impact global markets and raise the cost of every day goods for consumers and businesses. john roberts is live for us at

the white house. john? >> so far the stock market at least is giving this tit for tat battle between the united states and china a big yawn. the stock markets, the major indices up across the board today. clearly this is baked in or nobody is worried about it. a lot of countries around the world waiting to see how this turned out. the president has threatened to level tariffs against our european allies if they don't come up with a new trading relationship. the president believes the united states has the upper hand in this dispute. that china needs the u.s. more than the u.s. needs china. at a rally last night in montana, the president said we have all the cards. he also said if china doesn't cave and you alluded to this at the top, he has another $16 billion in goods to target for tariffs and $200 billion after that and $300 billion after that. last night the president saying the u.s. has to stop being the world's piggy bank. listen here. >> i respect china and i respect

his pick nor the supreme court monday night. >> yeah, we don't know what the president decided. but we know he narrowed down his chases. white house staff has been working the last few days based on his frontrunners to put on four roll-out packages depending who the president picks. here's the packages. brett kavanaugh from the u.s. court of appeals. amy barrett and judge thomas hardiman. he's in addition to the last. vice president mike pence met with kavanaugh wednesday. of the interviews that the president did, the one with kethledge went to best.

we're told the president connected with kethledge. and hardiman was a finalist to fill the scalia vacancy last year. so the president is familiar with him. liked him enough and thought he should be a finalist. he's back in the mix now and actively being by some groups on the outside. i'm told that kethledge, his stock is rising at the white house but kavanaugh may be the frontrunner here. the president would like to appoint amy barrett, too. trace at the moment, we're just guessing and only the president knows what the president is going to do. some outside group are saying please, mr. president, make the decision now because we have a lot of work to do to try to get this nominee, whoever it is, through confirmation before congress takes off for the election campaign in october. trace? >> it was during this show yesterday, john, that we learned the head of the epa scott pruitt

stepped down what is the latest on that? >> surprised the timing of it because he was at the fourth of july picnic showing no signs that he was about to step down. certainly not unexpected given all that pruitt had been facing. pruitt remains the epa administrator through midnight tonight. andrew wheeler will take over monday. wheeler doesn't have the same type of record that pruitt has in terms of the things that he's done in terms of first class travel and security and all of that. but certainly he's got a background that will be a ripe target for opponents of the president's environmental policies. he was a former lobbyist for the coal, oil and gas industry. you can bet the opponents of president's environmental policies will be doing everything they can to ferret out any conflicts of interest

there and try to take down wheeler who begins his job monday. trace? >> trace: i have no doubt. john roberts live on the north lawn. meantime, the u.s. committed aed a solid number of jobs last month even though the trade war was brewing. unemployment rose slightly in june as more people started looking for work and wages stayed flat. the fox business network's hillary vaughn is here with more on that. hi, hillary. >> there's more good news and bad news out of this job report. the economy is on its longest job creating streak ever. the economy continued to make history, adding more jobs for the 93rd month in a row. the economy isn't just looking good, it's looking better than it ever has. for june, the u.s. added 213,000 jobs beating what everyone expected for june by 13,000 positions. they added an extra 37,000 jobs to the job tallies for april and

may. the economy is stronger in those months than what originally reported. here's where they're going. a big one, education and health getting 54,000 more jobs last month. manufacturing is up 36,000 jobs, adding something the president has had on his agenda. leisure and hospitality, hotels, bars added 25,000. i talked with the ceo of ladderstock.com. the site for jobs that pay over $100,000 jobs a year. he said they saw a surge in higher paying jobs. >> the highest economy we've seen in a couple decades. there's employers hiring for markets, operations, sales. all across the board. it's an extraordinary market to be somebody looking for a new or better position. >> trace, wages for the month of june did stay flat. >> yeah, i didn't want to jump on mark's site bite there.

in silicon valley, there's 20 jobs available for every person. the high-paying jobs are up and wages are flat. >> there's two things to consider. first, the majority of job fillers are college grads or young people without a degree. so you have a surge of younger people being added to the payroll. they're entry level positions. zip recruiter, their chief economist saying young people and those without college education have been seeing the biggest employment gains recently. they tend to earn lower wages and adding jobs at the lower end of the spectrum would lower the average wage. you have unemployment slightly up. typically a number that you don't want to go up. ..2%. more people are engaged. over 500,000 people started looking for a job in june. not everyone has found a job yet and something a lot of job creators and businesses have talked about is the frustration and challenge of finding skilled

workers that are needed to fill those positions. >> trace: thanks, hillary. let's bring in jean cummings. hillary talked about the jobs there. we look at the markets. wall street is strong. shrugging off the trade war thing. everybody is wondering. we can talk about politics until we're blue in the face. they want to know with the trade war with china, how does it affect them? what is it going to cost me just now but down the road? >> absolutely. the trade ward is going to impact people in a very uneven way. the first round of the tariffs from china are focused on agriculture and to some degree automobiles. they're aimed directly at the midwest. the chinese did that for political reasons. they were aiming for trump's base. we did an analysis. if you look at the counties that

are hardest hit, the vast majority of them are trump districts. only in single percentages were areas that hillary clinton won, would they be impacted in a negative way. so it's very strategic. you have the case of, say, steel where the president has put a tariff on imports, in that case you have a steel plant that is hiring and then we had a story about a company that makes chains out of that steel and they're laying people off. so very uneven. >> it's uneven. but you know there are stories out there where some of these people are saying the manufacturers saying we're going to try in the short term not to pass the costs along to the customers. how long can that last, right? >> it's very true. we hear from the agriculture community that the farmers for a while are willing to take a hit because they think the president

sees a longer gain here. they are prepared to give him some time to let it play out. again, the soy bean farmers as of today are not earning the -- the price has gone down enough that they're not breaking even. they're in the red right now. >> trace: what is your take on this, geanne? do you believe this escalates into a full blown trade war back and forth, back and forth or stays at a trade battle, a trade tiff, if you will? >> i think it's going to get bigger before it's done. i think the president is prepared to act again. we haven't gotten started with the europeans and making plenty of threats towards them. we have several stages that we'll go through before it resolves itself in whatever way it does. >> trace: a lot of people have pointed out, china is not behaving properly.

>> trace: secretary of state mike pompeo back in north korea today. he says he's there to fill in details about kim jong-un's commitment to work towards denuclearization. that pledge made last month in singapore with president trump. since then, u.s. intelligence parentally shows north korea isn't being honest with washington about the current state of its nuclear weapons program. rich edson is live in tokyo. critics say they're concerned the u.s. is easing up on north korea. >> secretary of state mike

pompeo is trying to engage the sincerity of kim jong-un. that's something that there's a lot of skepticism about. many wonder how sincere kim jong-un is and for reducing or getting rid of his nuclear program. the secretary of state is in pyongyang to figure that out. trying to get intelligence on what north korea has of their nuclear program and perhaps agree to a time line to when north korea would surrender it and what it would receive from the united states in return. the secretary spent three hours in negotiations. for reports that the united states is easing pressure, that's something that the state department is denying. heather nauert said in a statement, nothing could be further from the truth. our policy towards north korea has not changed. we're committed to a denuclearized north korea. the trump administration maintains that its still applying pressure, still has those sanctions on north korea,

though it does acknowledge it's not adding additional sanctions on while these discussions are on going. also, reports out of the region that north korean state media is criticizing the united states for the government's condemnation of north korea's abysmal human rights record. according to the state media report, they consider that a provocation from the united states to bring up or discuss the issues of human rights. kim jong-un is also continuing his conversations with the chinese president, xi jinping on this. after the meetings with the secretary of state with the north koreans in pyongyang, pompeo travels to tokyo to consult with u.s. allieses and south korean officials here in tokyo. there's also a report out of the region that the secretary of state had brought a couple of gifts for kim jong-un with him. one of them is a letter from

president trump according to this report. the second is a cd of the elton john song "rocketman." the president brought up the song or the -- whether or not kim jong-un had ever heard of the song at the summit a month ago. the report says that kim jong-un said he never heard the song. if you remember, it was last year when the president was calling kim jong-un "little rocketman" as he was launching ballistic missiles over japan and other provocations. that apparently is a little joke from the administration to kim jong-un. reporters that were traveling with the secretary asked him if that was true. the secretary would only laugh that one off. it also goes to show how far the personal relationship between the president, what he's been saying about kim jong-un has changed dramatically in the past year. the president continually is bringing up how north korea and kim jong-un have not for months

>> trace: time and oxygen are both starting to run low for the 12 boys and their soccer coach trapped in a cave in thailand. rescuers tell reporters the pressure to act is increasing. a thai diver died after running out of air. the overall oxygen levels inside have dropped because of all the emergency workers there. our senior affairs correspondent greg palkot is monitoring that situation. he's live in the london bureau. greg? >> the latest word that we're getting about the boys and their coach trapped in the cave is that they're in good health but they're not coming out yet. an official leading the rescue effort spoke a short time ago at the scene. he said yeah, the boys are fine but they still don't know how to

dive. the plan to swim them out can't be acted on yet. he has said that if the situation gets worse, if the rains come, then they will consider pressing forward with that plan and in fact rains are forecast starting for this weekend. he did say that he's concerned about oxygen. the oxygen levels in the space where the boys are. that's why they're trying to lay an oxygen line in there to provide a little more breathing space for the boys also coupled with a communications line to coordinate any incoming rescue effort, also to help the boys speak with their families nervous up on top, trace. >> trace: what else do we know about the diver that died? >> yeah, this is an amazing thing. shows the dangers of this rescue effort and the heroism that everybody is involved in there. he's a 38-year-old former thai

navy seal. he said he was going to go down there as a volunteer and he did. he brought oxygen canisters to the boys. as he was coming out, he ran out of oxygen. couldn't be resuscitated. officials are saying if the experts can't get out, how are they going to get the boys out? so they continue to look at those other options we've talked about all week. one is just waiting out the rain and the flooding. that could take months. or drilling in to the side of a mountain to provide and escape tunnel. difficult but even businessman elon musk is volunteering some staffers from his boring company to help with that. in the past two hours, we have heard from the officials leading the rescue efforts that seems like they're going to stick with the plan a, the swim-out strategy. it's risky but probably the best

way to do it but maybe not right now. back to you, trace. >> trace: thanks, greg. thank you. let's bring in melanie burkeholder, the former secret service agent and trained in water rescues as an ocean diver. she said a rescue attempt carries a lot of risk. it's great to have you here. but you look at this, where this navy seal died and it really just highlights what we've said all week long. when you get in these caverns, the underground caves, it's risky for the best of differs to get out of there. >> absolutely. thanks for having me today. i want to say that as a mom foremost, my heart is breaking for the other moms and parents involved with having their children separated with them in a cave. a very dangerous situation. so i have just been praying for them. and hoping that they're going to

the right direction with the evacuation of these kids. it's a situation that everybody is established. as a diver, you look at this cave and you think, oh, my gosh, not only do we have murky raging waters, but we also have to consider our spatial limitations. we have a tank and our regulator and we have all of our gear. some of that is innavigatable at this point. those are big concerns. some of the kids don't know how to dive. they're children. >> trace: or swim. some of the kids don't know how to swim. the other big thing here, when you talk about these channels and the caverns, they can fit one body at a time. even if they're guided by experts, there's portions of this trip that they have to be alone at least for certain amounts of time and brings in

your emotional stability and panic can be lethal, correct? >> absolutely. especially in a diving situation. as a therapist, am i concerned about their emotional mental health. when you get into a situation where you use a regulator and oxygen, you have to be calm. the more you breathe, the more oxygen you're using. that's what happened to the diver that lost his life. he ran out. when you're nervous or anxious, you don't know what you're doing or it's dark and the waters are murky and raging, there's a number of factors that just go negatively in my opinion for a water rescue. the engineering rescue interests me a lot more. >> trace: you take so much time. they're talking about the waters rising and the monsoon rains this weekend and the oxygen levels dropping. nobody wants to force them out but this might be their last best hope. >> and it's unfortunate that

man for weeks because he's facing robbery charges and other crimes. they say when they found him, he opened fire hitting an officer who is expected to be okay. meantime, chris brown walking off stage and right into a police car. officers in west palm beach florida say they arrested him after his show on a felony battery charge. a photographer claims he was attacked in a nightclub in tampa. brown pleaded guilty to beating up his then girlfriend, rihanna and avoided prison. folks in spain kicking off the running of the bulls festival. dozens of people get injured at the event each year. the festival runs for nine days. about a million people are expected to attend. the news continues right after this.

correspondent, mike emanuel is live in washington. we're seeing e-mails of one of the accusers sent to congressman jordan. >> yes. one former ohio state wrestler said that he e-mailed the congressman and said that he needed to step forward and lead to cut through the b.s. at ohio state. fox has reviewed some of his e-mails, including one from june 15 to congressman jordan and oliver luck which reads, reverend james, wants to be speaker of the house despite his lack of knowledge of the systemic abuse. and it was concluded a may 6 e-mail with #rapecoverup. a way of life. >> something needs to be done to protect students, not just athletes. students across campuses at ohio state and across the country.

house democrat only behind nancy pelosi. hoyer represented a part of maryland south of d.c. he's held that seat since 1981. a huge wild fire rages across the west. one turning deadly near the california-oregon border. alicia acunya is here with more. >> one person has died and we're awaiting details on how that happened. last update, approximately 8,000 acres have burned and the fire is burning near the oregon-california state line. for a while, it shut down parts of i-5. there's red flag warnings right now and they're expected to remain the rest of the day. all of this prompting jerry brown to call a state of emergency, this is one of 60 significant fires burning in the western part of the country.

in utah, it's the dollar ridge fire east of provo. it's taken 90 homes and threatening 1,000 more. also at risk, oil, natural gas and infrastructure. this is something -- this is a fire moving at a good clip, which is always a danger for fire crews. >> it's amazing here. you look at the pictures like wow. it's only july. we don't get them until later in the season. it's like 158 degrees out there. colorado is battling one of the biggest wild fires ever. >> 105,000 acres have burned so far. this is about 200 miles south and west of denver. you talk about a fast-moving fire. when this started, it was burning 16 acres a minute. the third largest in colorado state history. it's burned up to 250 homes. they did get some rain which helped with containment but also prompted a flash flood watch.

the colorado governor is touring the area. authorities believe it was ignited by some people at a shooting range using tracer bullets. colorado is using the most resources in history. >> you get this many fires at one time, you stretch your resources. what we saw here in the last couple days is prioritizing those places where we have the greatest risk. >> a growing problem with the folks, folks flying drones over them. cory gardner addressed that today. >> if some moron wants to take a drone above a firefighting operation, they're crazy. they should knock it off and let firefighters do their job. >> and trace, it's so dangerous because these drones force these planes to land and drop their retardant. slows things down. >> thanks. >> trace: we're tracking the

>> trace: a fox extreme weather alert. a heat wave hitting the southwest united states. fox here in los angeles facing excessive heat warnings. last time we checked, temperature was above 100 degrees. tomorrow could be 110 in burbank and 12 in palm springs. rick reichmuth has more. >> after the heat we had across the east, take a look at this. i want to show you this quickly. we had all of these incredibly high temperatures across the east the last week. take a look at this now.

things are cooling down. the humidity is dropping a lot. so things are improving quite a bit. the heat goes somewhere and this time it's going out across the west. as you said, trace, this is current temperatures here. pick your city or your area. 107 in phoenix. that's not incredibly hot for phoenix just yet but it's 103 in downtown l.a., 112 in van nuys. forecast in burbank around 113. that would be the highest temperature ever on any date for that area, for burbank. you get the idea. the heat is building in here. a little closer in across the southern california area. 110 in riverside. 116 in palm springs. let's say. 12:50 in this afternoon. you have plenty of sunlight to see the temperatures go up. these is where we have the heat advisories in effect, excessive heat warnings across the area. this is tomorrow, we might drop a couple degrees here across southern california. 98 in l.a. we come up a little bit here,

death valley, 119. phoenix going towards 112. sunday, same story. it's an improving trend. with all the fires burning a cross the west, unfortunately it's windy with some of this. fire conditions certainly not improving in the short term here across southern california. colorado, arizona, anywhere across the west. >> yeah, hot, hot, rick. and a hurricane in the atlantic heading for some ideas, right? >> yeah. we have hurricane burrell out there. you probably can't pick out where it is. this is it right here, a really small hurricane. when it's so small, all of the atmospheric conditions that could hinder it. it's a small hurricane coming here across the lesser antilles. keep in mind after last year, everything that comes here is getting problematic.

>> trace: well, the u.s. postal service couldn't tell the difference between the statue of liberty in new york and a replica outside a las vegas casino. the mistake is costing the agency $3.5 million. seems like back in 2010, the postal service released its statue of liberty forever stamp here on the right. but realized months later that the image was not the real lady liberty that you see on the left. the sculptor behind the vegas statue sued. his lawyers claimed it was easy to tell the difference and that the vegas version was more fresh faced. and sexier than the original. it is vegas, baby. federal judge sided with the artist and today said the postal service has to pay up $3.5 large to the artist.
