talk about china and the tariffs? >> maria: sure, i will talk about china and the tariffs. what's interesting is these tariffs with mexico and the eu have the real potential to hurt real voters across the country whether it's so soybean farmers in indiana who are starting to feel the consequences of this. my question for the president is when he starts to hear from these states from senators in the republican heart who are up for re-election or other members of congress that the tariffs are hurting the voters back at home, will they that change the caucus because the president -- if he puts these really tough tariffs on these other countries will come and negotiate and make better trade deals. we haven't seen any evidence they are willing to do. so the president is playing hard ball. we have no new trade deals in place and meanwhile there is great economic news as you mentioned that has the potential to be undercut in people's paychecks and wallets if the tariffs continue for some time. it's a political question at some point. not just an economic one for the president. >> kimberly: okay. the president, dana, has been pretty steadfast on his

talking points about the economy. about the tariffs that he feels it was unequal bargaining between the united states and china has been in place pretty much for 40 years where they have had these discrepancies where he feels like we have had sort of a disadvantage that we have been operating on. and so he is trying to correct that what do you think about the timing and the impact on the economy? >> well, i keep thinking that every morning we will wake up and find out oh, everything is solved and there was a big agreement overnight and everything is fine. looks like that's not going to happen. the other thing is there is a piece in the "new york times" today that reiterated the president floating that idea at the g-7 why don't we just take all the tariffs off? and ed faulkner of the heritage foundation said we would be for that actually, go with that why don't we try that with our allies. going to see most of them next week anyway when he goes to the nato meeting. i do think it has the potential to hurt people. it takes a long time to build market share especially if you are a soybean farmer or cattle rancher. it takes a while it can be undone pretty quickly. that's why i hope it gets

done. one of the reasons that we have a trade deficit is that we are a pretty wealthy country and we like to buy cheap things and china makes a lot of cheap things we like to buy. a lot of this has turned on its head. the president is about to embark on 11-day foreign trip. he has a lot of great opportunities but it's also fraught with a lot of challenges because my role is every time a president goes on a foreign trip, something major happens at home. so on monday night he will announce the supreme court pick and then he will be off and he will go and he will let the white house and the senate try to work on that nomination. and he will be out of the country. i think that's actually a pretty smart strategy. but then always something else happens at home. nobody knows what it's going to be. >> kimberly: we'll look for and this hear about it first on the daily briefing. >> dana: monday at 2:00 p.m. >> kimberly: hello, tyrus. tirtie.

building up their navy big time. all we are saying is, listen, we need to contain china. and we have got to have our allies in order to contain china and protect u.s. workers. ever since china got into the wto, the american blue collar men and women that worked a lot of long hours in this country have gotten hammered. the wages have gone down and jobs have left. trump came in to protect those people. and one of the ways to do that is to contain the rise of china. they are a big global threat. there is going to be a big clash of the great powers eventually. i would disagree with maria. you said that our allies and the people that we have been, you know, doing these little tariff wars with haven't really done anything. south korea caved on autos and steel. >> maria: we already had a deal with them though. there is no new deal. >> jesse: allowing new imports. >> maria: matt is new trade deal, jesse? >> jesse: they are negotiating new trade deeltsdz right now. france has agreed to pay more for the nato cost. germany, angela merkel said the other day it didn't get

picked up she is willing to drop auto tariffs the eu and japan have come in and encircled china within the wto along our side. so i think he is moving the needle on that. >> maria: but there are no trade deals we have seen put into place. he pulled out of tpp. he is threatening to blow up nafta and none of these other countries have stepped up bilaterally and said we want to do a trade deal with you instead. >> jesse: going to take a long time. >> maria: average men and women you are talking about, blue collar americans are the ones hurt by tariffs. people in places like indiana and missouri. >> jesse: i'm concerned about too there might be short-term page. i agree with that. >> maria: is this short-term pain going to get under the circumstances to a better trade policy in the end? >> jesse: i think that's the strategy and we will see what happens. >> maria: strategy most economists across the political spectrum think will work. >> jesse: strategists said a lot of great things were going to happen with the other trade deals and a lot of jobs left the country. >> kimberly: 200 billion in tariffs ready to go as well. dayna, do you have a

comment? >> dana: not really. a lot of these numbers get thrown around with the wto united states wins 99% of the cases. can we get to 100 percent? maybe. china is not innocent. especially when it comes to theft and technology. allies with nato. each that still is like, you know, giving nato a bloody nose on the way to a better trade deal? i don't know. maybe it will all work out. i'm hopeful. >> kimberly: okay. so dana is optimistic with her sunny side up. what do you say? >> i'm patient. i play poker. i have like two or three apps on my phone. i have no problem with signature and waiting. it's a poker game. >> kimberly: like baseball. i do the patience at the plate. i wait for the full count. i wait for my pitch. i love when it's 3-2 and the pitcher is sweating me. you should sweat me. >> sweating. >> kimberly: desperate mission to save a soccer team trapped in a flooded

coach flooded in a cave in thailand as tragedy strikes. trace gallagher is standing by with the latest. trace? >> maria for the past four days the rescue teams in and around those caves in thailand have had very high hopes for getting 12 boys and their coach out safely. now that optimism has diminished a bit following the death of a thai navy seal. the 38-year-old expert diver was coming out of the cave around 1:00 in the morning when he ran out of oxygen and passed out. at the time, he was trying to establish an oxygen line into the chamber where the boys are trapped because the oxygen level in there has dropped from 21% to 15%. that's significant they are using canister to fill with more oxygen. highlights emphasizing for days even for experts getting in and out of the cave sex extremely dangerous. and most of these boys don't even know how to swim let

alone utilize dive gear through muddy water and narrow passageways. earlier on shepard smith reporting, i spoke with a former street service agent and rescue diver about the emotional toll of trying to swim out. watch. when you are nervous or anxious and don't know what you are doing and dark and murky and raging. a number of factors really negatively in my opinion for a water rescue. >> it's worth noting passageways are so narrow the help of rescue divers portions of the trip out like a mile, mile and a half where the boys would have to navigate the channels alone. for now, the rescue teams are waiting. but if the oxygen levels continue to drop inside the cave or the water levels rise because of these monsoon rains that are forecast this weekend, swimming out sooner than later may be the only option. maria? >> maria: thanks, trace. well, kimberly, this is a

horrific story it was initially happy when they were found because we didn't know for many days if they were alive. one case diver has called this rescue the underground i didn'equivalent of climbing mt everest. a five hour trip to reach them. what do we make of this and how can people follow the story with anything but extreme sadness right now. >> kimberly: it's heart wrenching and heart breaking when you think about somebody who is an expert in their field. thai navy seal god bless him such a hero trying to go this to increase the oxygen levels in there so these children would be able to survive and then he lost and gave his own life. that just goes to show you how dangerous and how serious and fraught the situation is. and you have to think that some of the best and brightest minds, you know, not just in this country but in the world are trying to put their heads together to work, cooperatively, and everybody comes together to try to save the life of

their children who are just really relying on us and poor things are so desperate in there to be able to survive. and you see these images if you look at some of the graphics that you have seen on the internet, on the web, in terms of the whole layout, the structure of it, you see how complicated it is, in fact, to be able to effectuate a rescue. and i just say to myself this is really a situation where, you know, they need like a miracle. and they need our prayers and they need everybody to really think in a creative, unique way to keep them alive so they can get them out. >> maria: that's a good point, jesse. they are now looking at alternatives ways to bring the group out. one option is possibly boring a hole down in the cave sort of like they did with the which i lane miners. one option was for them to stay in the cave, bring in supplies and they could stay there until the monsoon season ended and get out more safely now as trace

mentioned there is an oxygen problem. there is 140 cave divers around the world that are helping and people are trying to come up with solutions here which is a good thing there is a loft innovation in the world that maybe can help. >> jesse: they have the best and brightest out there, like kimberly said it's going to take a miracle. sometimes miracle does happen in a way it's a sad story but also very uplifting story because you see how much the world values life. and everybody comes together all these experts are volunteering time and money to go. in other countries are going. in bore ago hole seems dangerous because that could collapse it feeding them oxygen could only last so long because the monsoon season ends in october. that's three months from now. and there is just limited resources. if the analogy of being an underground mount everest. just think about it there is no guide. like these people are going in solo. it's dark, and then you have to train young starving, you

know, terrified young boys thousand swim and scuba dive on a level experts cannot handle. i'm praying for them as kimberly said. >> maria: dana, there are people from around the world from britain, from china, from the u.s. trying to help. these are boys aged 11 to 16. and they are 25-year-old coach. >> dana: i agree in terms of the only thing that we can do is pray for them. and to send positive thoughts because the rains are coming and mother nature has a way of reminding you we are not all powerful. that's why prayers are in order. i have a mixed feeling about following this so closely. i'm glad that we can. and we can know they are there. but i worry a little bit about the social media part of it for some reason it gets under my skin. >> maria: tyrus, what do you think about that. >> tyrus: as a parent it's difficult to imagine. the frustration and fear they are going through. and i'm hoping that they are able to communicate with

their children. because swimming as a guy who scuba dives swimming for a mile under water in the dark i wouldn't do it. to ask ask a small child to do that air deprived and afraid is just tragic. the whole scene is bad. i hope they are able to be with their parents at least communicate with them or something. >> maria: we will all keep praying for them and keep their families in our thoughts here. president ripping democrats over calls for abolishing ice. ♪ (burke) at farmers, we've seen almost everything

implement as tyrus just said. if you want to change the policies you have to change the politician, right? >> dana: right. >> maria: i don't think ice the men and women should be target. we have a dozen ice members signing a record calling for ice to be reconstituted to take away from some of the things they have been asked to do under president trump which was not their original mandate. they were originally set up after 9/11 to help do things like fight terrorism. illegal immigration numbers have been steadily declining for a decade. we do not have a crisis at the border but we need better immigration policies and we need border security. the problem is the president runs way far to the right he runs way far to one extreme and democrats way far to the other extreme is bad politics and bad policy. >> dana: interesting. >> maria: no one in congress to help solve it. >> dana: independents are saying they agree immigration should be dealt with you about they just want washington to do something. do you think they will ever get anything done?
