may on her own soil. are you giving russian president vladimir putin the upper hand heading into your talks given you are challenging the alliances he seeks to destroy. president trump: that's such dishonest reporting of course it's nbc which is worse than cnn. >> what we are learning is the media is more outraged when trump is scolding our allies, more so than when american politicians are encouraging mob action against our own leader. howie: the press chooses sides after a marathon house grilling of fbi agent peter strzok turns into a full-blown circus. >> i didn't say anything inaccurate. >> the witness need to be able

which was done which was generally fine. but it didn't put in what i said about the prime minister. and i said tremendous things. fortunately we tend to record stories so we have it for your enjoyment. we record when we deal with reporters. it's called fake news. howie: joining me, mollie hemingway. gillian turner, a fox news correspondent and former national security official in the bush and obama administrations and juan williams, co-host of "the five." the president was quoted as saying some positive things about prime minister theresa may. mollie: he's more effective calling out particularly bad reporting. they also had audio of what he

be negative implications for the u.s. is an obama administration throwback message. that's something prime minister david cameron asked president obama to .deliver. howie: the president did say he also said some goo things about you. she said it's only the press. it's rare to have any admission of apology from this president. juan: i think he created the media firestorm, then he tries to manage it. he also went after the mayor of london. he says i don't feel welcome here. why did you let the crying balloon up for two hours. mentioning terrorism in london, in fact he has problems. brexit, terrorism.

that resonates at home. howie: the president got into a dust-up with cnn's jim acosta. president trump: john roberts go ahead. cnn is fake news. i don't take questions from cnn. john roberts of fox. let's go to a real network. >> we are a real network too, sir. howie: he called on john roberts. john acosta was interrupting, trying to hijack the question it's not a scrum where they are walking to the helicopter and everybody is shouting out. other said he should have stood up for cnn. john roberts said there are good journalists at cnn and the president's criticism was unfair.
8:08 am
later the president posted of a take-down of jim acosta. and then the white house pulled john bolton this morning on cnn's state of the union saying they didn't want to reward acosta's bad behavior. we heard them dismiss welker for his dishonest reporting. did it strike you as dishonnist? gillian: no. it was delivered in a critical manner. it was a provocative question. that was fair. i can understand why maybe a president with a good relationship with mainstream media would feel taken aback by a hard question like that. but it does not make it
8:09 am
dishonest reporting or fake news. john roberts did issue a statement saying he didn't find kristen welker's question dishonest. mollie: when president trump says the allied countries need to provide more for their common defense. that's something that has been said by the previous 7 administrations. he said it more harshly because they didn't get the result they were hoping for. the underlying assumption that it helps russia to have a strong nato is wrong. it helps the nato countries. howie: there has been a media explosion since friday afternoon after the mueller indictment of 12 russian officers. the white house has a different
8:10 am
view, and the president has repeated his witch hunt rhetoric. mollie: there is a lot of conflation in the media coverage. what happened friday with the russians is important. it goes to the heart of the putin regime. the witch hunt refers to the collusion theory, the conspiracy theory that russians worked with donald trump. there remains no evidence to support that. howie: rod rosenstein told the president before this european trip that these indictments were coming. a lot of journalists are saying why didn't he react substantively that these are members of the russian government under putin's control who thanked his elaborate campaign to interfere with the election. juan: we live in such politically polarized times.

what is conservative media saying about this? what are conservatives on capitol hill, the president's political allies think. lindsey graham says the president needs to confront vladimir putin directly on this. we have seen the recent tweets released by the house committee and they indicate there is an ongoing effort by the russians to interfere in the 2018 elections. the president said there won't be any perry mason moment with vladimir putin. howie: he said i will ask about the meddling, that's your favorite subject. is it the role of anchors and correspondents to say we think the president should speak out about the cyber hack, but anything more contentiously we

more attention. howie: i took a little pleasure -- kavanaugh was the frontrunner in the beginning and fake drama the media fell for. a media producer reported that the white house cut a deal with anthony kennedy. in exchange for the president picking one of his former law clerks, he would retire. it sounds terrible and it's not true. gillian: the most of valuable currency for a journalist is a negative story about the administration. if it involves the president directly even more so. a lot of journalists are sacrificing the reporting standards to move the needle forward. this is a cut and dried example of that. howie: this is a story retracted

8:44 am
had about president trump. howie: hostile attitude or not, wasn't this a self-inflicted wound? didn't he create this controversy by granting this interview before landing in the u.k.? steve: yes, he did. but i would say in a helpful way because he pointed out theresa may's brexit plan. she continued to speak about her brexit plan in terms that were false. she said things about her brexit plan that weren't true. what the president said about the plan is it stops britain from doing a trade deal with the u.s., it stops britain having control of its borders and laws. all those things are true. what theresa may said is false.
8:45 am
the final point i would make is what the president was talking about in relation to fake news was not necessarily what he said about brexit. what he was getting at is what he said about theresa may personally. it's clear they have a strong personal relationship. howie: you wrote a column, you criticized him on fox. but you say most of people in the u.k. get a negative view of the president because of the snobbery and bias of the british media. that's a pretty tough indictment. steve: i'm pleased you picked that. that's my favorite point from the whole article. it go to the heart of how president trump is treated by the media. not just in the u.k., but here
