collusion. they have made significant progress for regressing some of the west conflicts, so when i met with president putin for about two and a half hours, we talked about numerous things. among those things are the problems that you see in the we're very much involved. i entered the negotiations with president putin from a position of tremendous strength. our economy is booming and our military is being funded $700 billion this year. $716 billion next year. it will be more powerful as a military as we've ever had before. president putin and i addressed the range of issues starting with the civil war in syria and need for humanitarian aid and help for people in syria. we also spoke of iran and the
12:01 pm
need to halt the nuclear ambitions and destabilizing ambitions taking place in iran. as most of you know, we ended the iran deal, which was one of the worst deals anyone could imagine. that's had a major impact on iran and substantially weakened iran. we hope that at some point iran will call us and we'll make a new deal, maybe we won't. iran is not the same country it was five months ago. that i can tell you. they're no longer looking so much to the mediterranean and the entire middle east. they have big problems that they can solve probably much easier if they deal with us. so we'll see what happens. we did discuss iran. we discussed israel and the security of israel. president putin is very much involved now with in the discussion with netanyahu and working something out with
12:02 pm
surrounding syria and syria, specifically with regards to the security and long-term security of israel. a major topic of discussion was north korea and the need for its to remove its nuclear weapons. russia has assured of us their support. president putin agrees with me 100%. they'll do whatever they can do to make it happen. discussions are ongoing and going very well. we have no rush for speed. the sanctions are remaining. the hostages are back. there's been no tests, no rockets going up for a period of nine months. and i think the relationships are very good. i'll see how that goes. we have no time limit, we have no speed limit. we're just going through the process. the relationships are very good. president putin is going to be involved in the sense that he's with us. he would like to see that

happen. perhaps the most important issue we discussed at our meeting prior to the press conference was the reduction of nuclear weapons throughout the world. the united states and russia, 90%, as i said and we can have a big impact. nuclear weapons is the greatest threat of our world today. they're a great nuclear power. we're a great nuclear power. we have to do something about nuclear. so that was a matter that we discussed in great detail. president putin agrees with me. the matters we discussed are profound in their importance and have the potential to save millions of lives. i understand many disagreements between our countries, but i also understand that dialogue and when you think about it, dialogue with russia or other countries, but dialogue with russia in this case where we've had poor relationships for many
12:04 pm
years, dialogue is a important thing and a good thing. so if we get along with them, great. if we don't, we won't get along with them. but i think we have a very good chance of having very positive things. i thought that the meeting that i had with president putin was really strong. i think that they were willing to do things that frankly i wasn't sure whether or not they would be willing to do. we'll be having future meetings and we'll see whether or not that comes to fruition. we had a very, very good meeting. i wanted to clear up -- i have the strongest respect for our intelligence agencies headed by my people. we have great people, whether it's gina and dan coats or any of them. we have tremendous people, tremendous talent within the agencies. i think they're being guided properly. we all want the same thing.
12:05 pm
we want success for our country. so with that, we're going to start a meeting now on tax reductions. we're going to be putting in a bill, kevin brady is with us. i might ask kevin to say a couple words about that and then we'll get back on to a private meeting. kevin, could you give a brief discussion about what we'll be talking about? >> yes, sir, mr. president. thank you for having members of the ways and means committee here today. peace through strength is foreign policy that works. it works best when america has a strong economy. a strong military. under your leadership, house and senate republicans are delivering or them, this is how we can strengthen america's economy even more. the best place we can start with america's middle class families and small businesses. so today we're here to talk to you about making permanent this tax relief. one, so they can continue to grow.

12:07 pm
helsinki. there he gave the former spy a pass on meddling in our election and questioned the findings of america's intelligence agencies. that caused a lot of fall-out on capitol hill where a wave of republican lawmakers and the president's closest allies slammed his remarks in finland. paul ryan setting the record straight on russia earlier today. >> let's be very clear so everybody knows, russia did meddle with our elections. they're doing it around the world. they did it to france, they did it to maldova and the baltics. russia is trying to delegitimize democracy. >> we have team fox coverage. catherine herridge is in washington. first, kristin fisher live at the white house. kristin? >> rick, there was really two big questions heading into this press availability with president trump. the first, does he believe, does he accept his intelligence
12:08 pm
community's findings that russia did meddle in the 2016 election and does he believe putin or does he believe the intelligence community? as he said, president trump just said that he misspoke during that press conference with russia president vladimir putin. he said that after he saw all the criticism come out from the media and from the republican members of congress, president trump says he got out a transcript, read it over and it was then that he realized that he simply misspoke. i want to make sure i get this straight. he said i said the word "would" unstead of wouldn't. that's what he said and that's what got so many people up in arms. he said what he meant to say, i don't see why it wouldn't be russia. so that was president trump. that's about as close to as an apology that you'll get from a president like president trump coming out saying that he
12:09 pm
misspoke. the other big headline that was just made by president trump is the fact that he came out and said that he fully supports the findings of his intelligence community. he says that he does accept that they believe that russia did med until the 2016 elections and he has the full faith and full support of our intelligence community. the former house speaker, newt gingrich saying that this was the biggest mistake of mr. trump's presidency. he said he needed to come out and fix it and he needed to do it fast. president trump has come out and attempted to fix it within a day of this press conference taking place. rick, we'll now have to wait and see if this is enough to quell some of his critics. >> kristin, just so our viewers know, it's pouring rain there at
12:10 pm
the white house. the lights went out when he said he had full faith in our intelligence agency. he said while there was meddling in the election, it didn't affect the outcome is what he had to say. president trump talked about the nato summit and building relationships and getting our nato partners to pay more. tell us about that. >> yeah, he said that he had an even better meeting with russia. he said he had a good meeting with our nato allies. he went so far to thank the nato secretary general. he's been taking a lot of criticism for being nice to putin and too tough on our nato allies. so he went out of our way to thank the nato secretary general and made sure that -- to talk about what he was able to accomplish from that meeting with nato. he says that he helped strengthen the nato alliance by getting them to pay more. some $45 billion more and helped them to pay their bills on time. in terms of the other things that -- some of the other
12:11 pm
accomplishments that he got out of that meeting with russian president vladimir putin, president trump pointed to north korea, israel and syria and iran. but there were no hard deliverables from the one-on-one meeting with vladimir putin, rick. >> much more on all of this ahead. kristin fisher live at the white house. thanks very much. we're monitoring reaction from u.s. intelligence officials. team fox coverage continues with catherine herridge who is also live in washington. catherine? >> the former top spy in the obama administration, james clapper, who faced his own calls for resignation about statements he made to congress, said he believes the current national director of intelligence dan coats should be considering his options. >> what you have to balance is, am i doing more good by leaving and, you know, reinforcing a
12:12 pm
principle or do i do more harm if i leave. so i'm sure that dan coats, i'd be very surprised if he's not going through that calculus himself right now. >> i don't know brennan, a frequent critic of the president is now joined by cia director who said i was willing to comment on the press conference. he said it could have been worse and until he got to the end, he couldn't have been a lot worse. coat issued a forceful statement that the u.s. intelligence agencies have always been "clear in our assessment" of russian meddling. there's no former state from coats today. it's important to note later this week he's scheduled to speak in the as espn security forum. >> thanks, catherine. we'll have more on the

12:16 pm
links bring in zeke miller from the associated press. zeke, my first thought is why did he wait this long to correct the record. what is your reaction? >> same reaction. it was 27 hours from the press conference yesterday with vladimir putin. we've seen multiple tweets by the president and a number of interviews by the president. if he knew he misspoke or had seen the initial coverage and read a newspaper, turned on tv, we know he did because he responded to the tv interviews, we didn't he clear this up beforehand. he let the american people and the world think is what he meant to say, if this is indeed a true walk back. we've seen the -- a rare admission by the president of a mistake. in the past, we thought this time last year after the charlottesville incident, he made a highly publicized walk back and a couple days after that walked back the walk back. are we see that to play out
12:17 pm
here? the president was reading closely from a script. so how authentic is this walk back by the president and will it last. >> rick: the criticism was fast and furious. came very quickly. momentarily after he spoke at that news conference. is it fair to call this damage control? was this an orchestrated way of trying to save face? >> that's certainly what it looks like. when you put that time frame to it. the criticism, condemnation by members of his own party has been pretty much universal with the exception of rand paul. moments before the president spoke and made this walk back, we heard from mitch mcconnell issues a very public re-assurance to american allies overseas that we value nato and european partners are friends and russia as a foe. something the president hasn't been willing to say. so it was coming from all corners and the president
12:18 pm
bending to that reality. >> rick: and yet in the past, the president has said that he agrees with the intelligence agencies conclusions. he has said that he understands that russia may have meddled in the election. he doesn't think it affected the outcome and there was no collusion. i want to play that moment when he said he misspoke during yesterday's news conference. here it is. >> i thought i made myself very clear but having reviewed the transcript. i have to say i came back and i said what is going on? what is the big deal? so i got a transcript. i reviewed it. i went out and reviewed a clip of an answer that i gave. i realized there's a need for some clarification. it should have been obvious, i thought it would be obvious. i'd like to clarify in case it wasn't, a key sentence in my remarks, i said the word "would"
12:19 pm
instead of "wouldn't." >> rick: so the question now is this enough for his republican critics? >> yeah, it takes the pressure off right now. you know, this is only one part of a controversy surrounding the president's trip. you know, the president -- even if you take this correction at face value, the president didn't challenge vladimir putin directly publicly about russia meddling in 2016 or ongoing effortses for 2018. he didn't publicly challenge him on things like crimea. his efforts to back the assad regime in syria and also going back earlier in the trip, his comments about american allies overseas and the united kingdom. that's what as drawn this criticism from the president. the president addressing the big shiny object. if you take the entire trip at face value, there's a lot there for the president's critics and his friends to find fault in.
12:20 pm
>> zeke, i'm told the reporters shouted would he condemn putin. the president didn't respond. he did say during the statement that it's important as he said for quite some time now, it's important to have a good relationship with russia. it's better to be friend than enemies with russia. is that enough? what is the feeling with his comments now? >> it's probably not enough for the president's critics. maybe nobody will ever be enough for the critics when it comes to this issue in particular. but it does fit in the broader pattern. the president needs a certain amount of leeway to have negotiations with actors, friend or foe, on a range of subjects. the president doesn't have a lot of good will there that he's earned. >> thanks, zeke miller. the president said clearly today, russians attempted to

12:39 pm
defense along with the united states. not count on u.s. military to solve the problem. that's a compelling argument. it's the manner in which it was done. also in concert with a lot of other criticism of european allies that they felt alienated. then they watched this relationship with putin. putin, his folks innovated ukraine, have supported violence there, took back crimea. these are all things that nato has a sharp stand on and the europeans wanted to see that affirmed by the u.s. president and they didn't get that. >> rick: john, the president said he misspoke yesterday during the news conference with russian president vladimir putin. in fact, he does believe the russians meddled in the 2016 election but didn't affect the outcome. your reaction and his attempts to walk it back. >> i think it's probably -- you know, using the language that

12:41 pm
>> the other question is, did the president go far enough today. did he condemn putin as much as he should have? should he be condemning putin more than he is? >> yeah, i don't think that you heard that, did you, in though remarks. you heard an affirmation of the intelligence community as he puts it, my people. the intelligence community as it exists now is in the context of criticizing previous leaders of the intelligence community and the military intelligence, which has found the same thing. they're all in concert on this, that russia has meddled. it's all of these other things. it's holding russia to account on crimea, ukraine, holding russia to account on their behavior in syria and north korea. that we just didn't hear it today, we didn't hear it yesterday either. >> john bussey with the "wall street journal." thank you. >> pleasure. >> rick: former president obama obama criticized president
