president vladimir putin. anderson cooper, john mccain, mitt romney they all describe the president's remarks about russia as disgraceful. former cia director john brennan called them treasonous. if nancy pelosi and chuck schumer announced that he was being blackmailed by a foreign power, or a spy, one member of congress called for a military coup against the presidency. as the rigid storm's world of the president bowed to the inevitable, genuflecting before u.s. intelligence agencies whose judgment must never be questioned and recited the oath of loyalty to the spy bureaucrats in charge of the country. >> president trump: in the key sentence in my remarks i said the word "wood" instead of "wouldn't" the sentence should have been i don't see any reason why it wouldn't. why it wouldn't be russia.

the sentence should have been and i thought it might be unclear on the transcripts or the actual video, the sentence should have been i don't see any reason why it wouldn't be russi russia. sort of a double negative. you can put that in and i think that probably clarifies things pretty good. >> tucker: that's the hostage tape. the president buckled to criticism. that happens, this is politics after all. what is amazing, unusual, and ominous is who made him buckle. the people yelling the loudest about how the russians are our greatest enemy and trump is our puppet happen to be the very same people who have been mismanaging our foreign policy for the past few decades. the people who invaded iraq and wouldn't admit it was a mistake, the people who killed and prolonged the horrible syrian civil war.

the one still defending the pointless afghan conflict and even now planning brand-new disasters around the world in lebanon, iran, and yes in russia. these are people who made america weaker, poor, satyr. the group whose failures got trump elected in the first place. you think they would be completely unemployable, picking up trash by the side of the turnpike somewhere but they're not. they are hosting cable news shows and holding high positions of influence at the state department. they run virtually every nonprofit public policy institution in washington. they are still in charge of our national conversation and naturally, they hate the idea of rethinking or correcting any of the countless blunders they've made over the years and that's one of the reasons they hate trump because he calls them on those blunders. being trump, he can't always explain precisely what he means to say, sometimes he gets details wrong or he gets sidetracked with some personal

vendetta, on the big questions trump is indisputably right. the cold war is over, the world has changed. it is time to rethink america's alliances and act in our own interest for once. russia is not a close friend of the united states. the question is why should we consider them a mortal enemy? of course russia spies on us, so do a lot of countries. russia's attempt to meddle in our election was amateurish, badly targeted facebook ads almost nobody saw. compare that effort to the deep penetration of the american industry and defense sector by the communist country of china or the sway that the gulf states have over the political process or that latin american countries are changing elections by forcing demographic change at a rate of americans consistently say they don't want. those are all major challenges to our american democracy, they

are real. but nobody on cable news seems upset by any of it. why is that? here is one reason, many in washington are getting rich from the chinese and the saudis. latin americans clean their homes and watch their kids. those countries can't be there enemies in their view. nobody is getting rich from russia, but so trump must be our mortal foe. does anyone actually believe it? no sober person who's read a newspaper could recite that talking point without laughing because it's stupid. the only option if you want to force the population to accept something ridiculous is to make sure they don't think too much about it, that they are quite -- that they do what they're told. if you don't believe it, watch what happens to trump right now. it's likely that the russian government broke into the dnc servers before the last election, it sounds like something they might do. before we act like we know for a fact that's what happened and go to war with russia over that, shouldn't we see some actual evidence that it happened?

may be a server or at least a clear explanation of what happened. we haven't seen that, that's what he asked for -- how dare h he, that's a treasonous thought. that's what they're saying, not just a few of them, all of them are saying it in unison. think for a second about what they are demanding. if you don't automatically accept the imprecise nonspecific never explained it findings of shadow and intelligence agencies of long documented track records of making serious mistakes you've somehow betrayed your country. the very people who assured you that iraq had weapons of mass destruction, the ones who said the shaw would never fall in iran, those people must be believed without question or else. on television this group is called the intelligence community, that's an orwellian name if there ever was one. what is this community we peered so much about? how long before congress starts

mending unthinking obedience to the lawmaker community. dissent is unpatriotic and if you don't agree you're working for vladimir putin. that's where we are heading and fast. in some ways this whole story is about donald trump at what he said and what he does. on a deeper level it has nothing to do with donald trump. this is about democracy, whether or not voters rule their country. it turns out the very people telling you they are saving our democracy are working overtime to try to destroy it and a scolding you as they do. yesterday we asked the president about this, tonight we are running fewer commercials and showing an extended interview with the president, here is part one of that conversation. thanks for doing this. the reaction to your press conference in washington was swift and intense, former cia director john brennan described as treasonous and an unimpeachable defense. why the push toward conflict with russia in washington on

both sides? >> president trump: i think john brennan is a very bad guy, a lot of things happened under his watch. i think is a very bad person. i think if you watch peter strzok and lisa page, comey, take a look at that and mccabe who has big problems i assume -- you look at the deception, the lies and what's gone on in the last fairly long period of time. before i won. i guess probably during the republican when i was fighting against 17 other republicans -- this has been going on for a long time. these are people who in my opinion are bad people. they are being exposed for what they are and it's a shame that it has to happen but it's really hurt our country. >> tucker: their view is that the united states is forever in conflict with russia which is our chief global adversary and anyone who doesn't believe that

is betraying the united states. why do you think there is this bipartisan consensus on that? >> president trump: it's incredible you look at world war i and world war ii, there was germany. and in world war ii, russia lost 50 million people and helped us win the war. i was saying to myself, russia really helped us. i'm not pro-russia, pro-anybody, i just want to have this country be safe, i don't want nuclear weapons -- even people thinking about it. russia and the united states control 90% of the nuclear weapons in the world. getting along with russia and not only for that reason, it's a good thing. >> tucker: are they our chief adversary? >> president trump: strong military but there economy is smaller than china. i don't want to use the word adversary, we can work together, everybody can do well and we can live in peace. i think it's very important and

i've watched your show a lot and i see how you're talking about the magnificent size of china, you look at what they've done in a fairly short period of time, that's because of a lot of bad leadership on behalf of the united states, we allowed it to happen we allowed them to make hundreds of billions of dollars. right now as you see and you've probably noticed things are happening -- we have to level the playing field between the united states and china. we've increased our net worth, we've increased our worth by more than $7 trillion since the election. were about twice the size of china -- our economy. china has the massive economy, they have the second biggest by far. >> tucker: nato was created to prevent the russians from invading western europe. you don't believe there at risk, so what is the purpose of nato?

>> president trump: it's okay, it's fine, they have to pay. they weren't paying, other presidents went, they made a speech and they leave and nothing would happen. the fact that they didn't pay is not a new fact, this is something that people have known for a long time. other countries were delinquent, we say in business they use the word delinquent, they didn't pay. i went there three or four days ago and i said you've got to pay because were not going to pay it from-90 -- were not going to pay 90% of the costs to defend europe and on top of that, the european union kills us on trade. we lost $151 billion on trade, they don't take our product our farmers beautiful goods, they don't take our cars and if they do the rate of taxes many times what we would charge them, we only charge them 2.5%.

their tariff is substantially higher. with china they charge to add a half percent, when we send a card to china they charge us 25%. people say we don't want tariffs but how is that fair when one country gets 25% and another country gets to it a half percent? the one getting 25 doesn't even want the cars. they want them to build those factories built in china. they want those factories built in europe. now were doing things that have never been done before in this country and you see what's going on. >> tucker: membership in nato obligates the members to defend any other member who has been attacked. let's say montenegro is attacked. why should my son go to montenegro to defend it from attack? >> president trump: i've asked the same question. montenegro is a tiny country with very strong people. they are very strong people. very aggressive people, they

make it aggressive, congratulations, you are in world war iii. i understand that's the way it was set up. i just got here a little more than a year and a half ago but i took over the conversation and said you have to pay. and the secretary general said that because of president trump last year we had an additional $44 billion raised for nato. this year it's going to be much more than that it was very unfair, they weren't paying. not only were we not paying for most of it, at that to your equation about montenegro. >> tucker: can you think of a place that has been improved by mass immigration or movements of large numbers of red refugees? >> president trump: no one.

i said the immigration policies in europe are a disaster, you're destroying europe, you're destroying the culture of europe, the crime is up in those areas and you'd better to do something. it's not me, it's not anything, you look at the numbers and the numbers speak. the culture is changing rapidly and the crime rate is changing more than rapidly. you'd better do something, i told them that. >> tucker: what are the lessons for us? >> president trump: we have to be strong in the border, were much stronger than we ever were and our numbers are much lower. where getting the wall, were putting in about $5 billion we've already started the wall and a 1.6 billion started in san diego. it's almost completed in that area. the people who are really asking for it, they probably go down as we don't want the wall but when it came to their backyard they wanted that wall and they wanted of the fast. we've started the wall, were going to continue with the wall,

we have strong immigration policies -- our laws are so bad, somebody comes in and we end up with a court case that takes seven years and people never show up to court. it's so bad and we have to do something about it. if they come into our land we have to say i'm sorry you have to leave. not i'm sorry please come to court, were going to put you in court you can come back in three years and they never show up. that's what's happening now. it's crazy. >> tucker: why do you think so many political and cultural leaders in the united states disagree with you and are making the case that borders are immoral? >> president trump: the democrats are for open borders which means crime. it's not a question of what do you think it means -- open borders means crime. you look at ms-13 and we stop them out of than anybody else could it but when they get through -- and then we send ice because ice is tougher than they are, i understand there's a big move to try to get rid of ice. ms-13, these are tough, vicious

people, they like using knives better because it's more painfu painful. these are vicious people, you know the story you cover it plenty. ice goes in and they get them out. if they put them in jail or they throw them out of the country and they don't even think about it. there's a movement to get rid of ice. if you don't have tough people doing that job you're going to have crime like you've never seen it. it is incredible, the democrats want open borders which is basically saying we want open borders, we want crime. >> tucker: why do you think we want that? >> president trump: may be it's a political philosophy they grew up with, maybe they learned in school, maybe they are fools, i don't know. >> tucker: part two of our inclusive extended interview but first professor stephen: is one of the preeminent russia experts in america, he's a contributing editor at the nation magazine

and he joins us tonight for soms conversation. you have followed this country for 50 years and know many of the leaders personally. give us a sense of what is at stake in this conversation about russia for the united states. >> for 75 years the president of the united states has met the leader of the kremlin, beginning with eisenhower in the atomic age the main purpose was to avoid war with russia. right now, we are in a new cold war and a hot war from ukraine to the baltic region to syria. president trump did not have a choice, he had to go as his predecessors did to meet with the leader of the kremlin, putin. and he did. we don't know exactly what they decided, we will learn. never, not only in my lifetime or history, has a president

coming back from doing his duty to avoid war with russia been greeted with this pornography passing as news analysis and commentary. he is being called traitorous, treasonous and i don't know what we are going to do because if we can't discuss the issue, how can we think about our policy? there is a good piece of news and i will state it quickly. ever since the soviet union ended, relations with russia have gotten worse and worse and now we are where we are. we ask ourselves why did that happen, communism is gone. the answer here is always that it's an orthodoxy, it's biblica biblical. you can't be accused of being pro-kremlin. the answer is russia is to blame, putin is to blame, the united states has done nothing wrong. now the president of the united states has said something absolutely heretical. he said at first in a tweet and

it was very simple but he was profoundly true. he said we have bad relations today because both sides are to blame. and i think that's what underlies their fury at him. he has become a heretic in the american policy system. he has challenged the fundamental axiom of american foreign policy for 25 years. >> tucker: what's true in foreign relations is true in marriage, it's always a joint effort to screw something up. >> and i'm not going there no matter what you say. >> tucker: give us a sense of the consequences of what's at stake here, for a lot of americans it's a political story, it's a country with a lot of weapons that sees the world differently from us, what are we playing with here? >> leave this russia game aside because i can't find a fax to support it.

what president trump has done -- i say three cheers for president trump. he has said we are in a dangerous situation with russia and it's not just russia to blame, we are to blame. we did wrongheaded things back in the 90s. and since. what we need to do, this is me speaking now, having acknowledged that, is have a discussion of where our policy toward russia went wrong first under clinton, then dr. bush, then under obama. it is bipartisan but if the media or to allow him, it's an opportunity to rethink and if you don't rethink, how do you get policy right? if you don't get policy right, we are talking about war. >> tucker: it's like seinfeld, refuses to learn anything. thank you very much, it's great to see you. cap next a democratic lawmaker

i would say that his performance today will live in infamy as much as the pearl harbor attack or kristallnacht. >> tucker: imagine hosting that show and somebody says this is like pearl harbor, wouldn't you say what was next but they didn't. nothing is being held back in this conversation about russia, this mass hysteria, but some literally in the congress are rooting for a military government or a world war or both. congressman adam smith represents washington he released the statement describing trump's remarks in helsinki as a treason. thanks a lot for coming on. you don't agree with the president's view on how the united states ought to approach russia, it's a policy disagreement. >> as i understand the law now as i look at it, the remedy for a crime by the president is impeachment.

>> tucker: how is it a crime to disagree with you, who was the fascist here? >> let me tell you with a crime is. the fbi just yesterday -- a couple days ago indicted 12 high-ranking russian officials were hacking into and influencing the u.s. election. i know there's a lot of dispute over here. >> tucker: i'm not disputing it it happened. >> it absolutely happened. the president of the united states has systematically tried to undermine the investigation in front of the international community basically siding with a hostile foreign power. >> tucker: doubting the conclusions of the intel community is now treason. >> they side with a hostile foreign power. >> tucker: to have opinions you don't like and to ask questions about the imprecise, the never fully explained conclusions of a powerful american -- >> they have been fully explained. i've been following very

carefully and i have a lot of questions. i'm going to need more than ten seconds to explain this so i will try. the crime is that they hacked into our -- the dnc servers and it did a whole bunch of other disinformation campaign and to try to influence the election, a foreign power tried to do that. that is the crime. also in this indictment and shows that 12 russian operatives had regular contact with high ranking trump officials. >> tucker: what is the crime the president committed in doubting the indictment? these are indictments, this isn't a product of a jury trial. by definition they aren't prove proven. but you're saying if you doubt charges brought by the government against somebody you're a criminal. >> i'm saying if you attempt to obstruct the investigation. >> tucker: how is he attempting to obstruct it by doubting on stage yesterday?

>> he's siding with a foreign power. >> tucker: having the same opinion as vladimir putin is a crime? >> it undermines the ability to do the investigation. >> tucker: i was there in helsinki, i didn't agree with everything he said, but i agree with this, where's the server? why didn't they examine the server? i don't know the answer to that question. does that make me a criminal for asking? >> he's not a criminal for asking that question, he's not a criminal period. he potentially has committed impeachable crimes. >> tucker: you said treason. >> that was an overstatement and i didn't understand the term of art. >> tucker: you get impeached for a crime. >> high crime and misdemeanors. >> tucker: what scares me about you is as a lawmaker, you

would even think that disagreement is a crime. >> i did not. >> tucker: you said it was. >> you said i said it was. what trump did in firing comey, what he has done consistently calling this investigation a witch hunt and fake news. >> tucker: you're not allowed to criticize the investigation? on my allowed to criticize the fbi? what if i think the fbi is -- >> you can absolutely do that. but if you are the president of the united states and you take steps to undermine the investigation. >> tucker: why is it expressing your undermining at? >> you skipped over a very important thing. >> tucker: the president spoke on camera to the world and something about what he said yesterday that you believe you believe constitutes a crime. that's a threat to all of us if we have lawmakers saying that public remarks are a criminal act and i want to get really

precise about what he did yesterday that you believe qualifies him for an impeachment trial? >> he's undermining the investigation by citing -- it's unlike you or me or anybody else. he's the head of the investigation technically, he is the president. he's in charge of all of it. >> tucker: we have an independent counsel as you know. >> him who he has the right to fire. >> tucker: if he fired him, you would impeach him? why do you come on the show and play silly games with me? >> he has at step after step after step attempting to undermine -- >> tucker: you make me want to criticize my government even more but i worry you're going to draw me up on a crime. >> i didn't accuse him of a crime for disagreeing with me, i accused him of a crime for

timing of those indictments? >> president trump: i don't think of the timing is much as i think of other timing. i wasn't a president when this happened. barack obama was the president of the united states when all of this -- when i was getting elected. i was being elected, i assume all of this stuff took place in that area or before. he was president and they informed him of it and he did nothing. after i won, it seemed like hillary was going to win, after i won he said it's a big deal -- it wasn't a big deal as long as she won. it's a disgrace and it's a disgrace what's happening to our country. >> tucker: would it be possible for you to direct the department of justice, fbi to take possession of the server and have -- assuming no government investigators looked at it and get to the bottom of it? >> president trump: as i've told you, the answer is

absolutely it is possible and may be at some point it will be done. my department of justice is the one branch, the one group i'm very little involved in and same with the fbi and am i disappointed that they're not looking at all of the cricket things taking place on the other side like the pakistani man who left with the three servers? who knew everything about shulz? debbie wasserman schultz. i believe they even had him and they don't want to use him. for the dnc, the server was never taken by the fbi. they went in there and john podesta threw him out of the office they said get out of here. they go after other people like there's no tomorrow. you understand that, i spoke to you about it before as they sai

a superstar until she allowed millions of people to come into germany. she was unbeatable in the election. she allowed millions of people to come in and when they came into germany they passed everywhere else and they want to other countries, hungry wouldn't take any. it was a great migration. obviously it's hurt angela, i don't want to say who is better but i will say this, she's been very badly hurt by immigration. >> tucker: china is a very rich country as you often say, how many refugees and immigrants do they allow? >> president trump: i would say probably none. >> tucker: why is that? >> president trump: how about asking me about japan, south korea, a lot of other countries who are very successful? >> tucker: is there pressure to allow refugees and immigrants to come in? >> president trump: i don't think people making the decision would want to waste the phone call, there's no chance. check out japan, ask them, how

about it because we need their votes as you know. i hope we get enough republicans so we don't need them come november. the democrats we need their votes, as you know we have 51 and even 51 is not really there for obvious reasons in the senate. and in the house it's fairly close, we need democratic votes in order to get it done and they really just want to resist. their whole thing is resist, that's the big theme. what do you get resistance? it's resist and obstruct, that's what they are all about. they aren't good politicians, they have horrible policy but they are very good at sticking together and resisting and obstructing. but it's hurting our country. but will get the immigration laws changed. >> tucker: thank you for the conversation. >> president trump: thank you very much. >> tucker: your betters on cable news have moved on just from moaning about attacking the
